Abstract:We build presentations for automata groups generated by Cayley machines of finite groups of nilpotency class two and prove that these automata groups are all cross-wired lamplighter groups.

Abstract:We consider the two generalizations of lamplighter groups: automata groups generated by Cayley machine and cross-wired lamplighter groups. For a finite step two nilpotent group with central squares, we study its associated Cayley machine and give a presentation of the corresponding automata group. We show the automata group is a cross-wired lamplighter group and does not embed in the wreath product of a finite group with a torsion free group. For a subfamily of such finite step two nilpotent groups, we prove that their associated automata groups are linear.

Abstract:Let G be a finite nonabelian simple group and let Gamma be a connected undirected Cayley graph for G. The possible structures for the full automorphism group AutGamma are specified. Then, for certain finite simple groups G, a sufficient condition is given under which G is a normal subgroup of AutGamma. Finally, as an application of these results, several new half-transitive graphs are constructed. Some of these involve the sporadic simple groups G J(1), J(4), Ly and BM, while others fall into two infinite families and involve the Ree simple groups and alternating groups. The two infinite families contain examples of half-transitive graphs of arbitrarily large valency.

Abstract:For any nontrivial abelian group $\mathbb{X}$ we construct a reversible (bireversible in case the order of $\mathbb{X}$ is odd) automaton such that its set of states and alphabet are identified with $\mathbb{X}$, transition and output functions are defined via the left and the right regular actions correspondingly and its group splits into the restricted wreath product $\mathbb{X} \wr \mathbb{Z}$, i.e. is a lamplighter group.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the full automorphism groups of six-valent symmetric Cayley graphs Γ = Cay (G,S) for finite non-abelian simple groups G. We prove that for most finite non-abelian simple groups G, if Γ contains no cycle of length 4, then Aut Γ = G · Aut (G,S), where Aut (G,S) ≤ S 6.

Abstract:Generalizing the idea of self-similar groups defined by Mealy automata, we itroduce the notion of a self-similar automaton and a self-similar group over a changing alphabet. We show that every finitely generated residually-finite group is self-similar over an arbitrary unbounded changing alphabet. We construct some naturally defined self-similar automaton representations over an unbounded changing alphabet for any lamplighter group $K\wr \mathbb{Z}$ with an arbitrary finitely generated (finite or infinite) abelian group $K$.

Abstract:We propose a new generalisation of Cayley automatic groups, varying the time complexity of computing multiplication, and language complexity of the normal form representatives. We first consider groups which have normal form language in the class $\mathcal C$ and multiplication by generators computable in linear time on a certain restricted Turing machine model (position-faithful one-tape). We show that many of the algorithmic properties of automatic groups are preserved (quadratic time word problem), prove various closure properties, and show that the class is quite large; for example it includes all virtually polycyclic groups. We then generalise to groups which have normal form language in the class $\mathcal C$ and multiplication by generators computable in polynomial time on a (standard) Turing machine. Of particular interest is when $\mathcal C= \mathrm{REG}$ (the class of regular languages). We prove that $\mathrm{REG}$-Cayley polynomial-time computable groups includes all finitely generated nilpotent groups, the wreath product $\mathbb Z_2 \wr \mathbb Z^2$, and Thompson's group $F$.

Abstract:We extend work of the first author and Khoussainov to show that being Cayley automatic is closed under taking the restricted wreath product with a virtually infinite cyclic group. This adds to the list of known examples of Cayley automatic groups.

Abstract:We study some families of finite groups having inner class-preserving automorphisms. In particular, let G be a finite group and S be a semidihedral Sylow 2-subgroup. Then, in both cases when either Sym(4) is not a homomorphic image of G and or G is nilpotent-by-nilpotent, we have that all the Coleman automorphisms of G are inner. As a consequence, these groups satisfy the normalizer problem .

Abstract:We consider the Macdonald group $\langle x,y\,|\, x^{[x,y]}=x^{1+2^m\ell},\, y^{[y,x]}=y^{1+2^m\ell}\rangle$ and its Sylow 2-subgroup $J=\langle x,y\,|\, x^{[x,y]}=x^{1+2^m\ell},\, y^{[y,x]}=y^{1+2^m\ell}, x^{2^{3m-1}}=y^{2^{3m-1}}=1\rangle$, where $m\geq 1$ and $\ell$ is odd. Then $J$ has order $2^{7m-3}$, and nilpotency class 5 if $m>1$ and 3 if $m=1$. We determine the automorphism group of the 2-groups $J$, $H=J/Z(J)$ and $K=H/Z(H)$, where $|H|=2^{6m-3}$ and $|K|=2^{5m-3}$. Explicit multiplication, power, and commutator formulas for $J$, $H$, and $K$ are given, and used in the calculation of $\mathrm{Aut}(J)$, $\mathrm{Aut}(H)$, and $\mathrm{Aut}(K)$.

Abstract:We give a geometric proof based on recent work of Eskin, Fisher and Whyte that the lamplighter group $L_n$ has infinitely many twisted conjugacy classes for any automorphism $\vp$ only when $n$ is divisible by 2 or 3, originally proved by Gon\c{c}alves and Wong. We determine when the wreath product $G \wr \Z$ has this same property for several classes of finite groups $G$, including symmetric groups and some nilpotent groups.

Abstract Group Automorphisms of Two-Step Nilpotent Lie Groups and Partial Automatic Continuity

Abstract:Any abstract (not necessarily continuous) group automorphism of a simple, compact Lie group must be continuous due to Cartan (1930) and van der Waerden (1933). The purpose of this paper is to study a similar question in nilpotent Lie groups. For many simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups, we show any abstract group automorphism is continuous "up to discontinuity due to the center and field automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$." Such groups include (1) a generic simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie group of type $(p,q)$ with $p$ large, (2) all twelve simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups of dimensions 6 or less except for one example, and (3) Iwasawa N-groups of simple Lie groups of rank 1, i.e., "Heisenberg groups". To our knowledge, the exception in (2) is the first nilpotent Lie group whose automorphism group is not of the type described above. In the proof for (3), we use tools from Riemannian geometry, even though the result is purely algebraic. All of the three cases are derived from one key result that gives a sufficient condition for the automorphism group to be of the type described above.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the automorphism groups of the Cayley graph with respect to the Coxeter generators and the Davis complex of an arbitrary Coxeter group. We determine for which Coxeter groups these automorphism groups are discrete. In the case where they are discrete, we express them as semidirect products of two obvious families of automorphisms. This extends a result of Haglund and Paulin.
