Abstract:I argue that scientific determinism is not supported by facts, but results from the elegance of the mathematical language physicists use, in particular from the so-called real numbers and their infinite series of digits. Classical physics can thus be interpreted in a deterministic or indeterministic way. However, using quantum physics, some experiments prove that nature is able to continually produce new information, hence support indeterminism in physics.

Abstract:The complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry aspect of a superspace(-time) $\widehat{X}$ in Sec.\,1 of D(14.1) (arXiv:1808.05011 [math.DG]) together with the Spin-Statistics Theorem in Quantum Field Theory, which requires fermionic components of a superfield be anticommuting, lead us to the notion of towered superspace(-time) $\widehat{X}^{\widehat{\boxplus}}$ and the built-in purely even physics sector $X^{\mbox{physics}}$ from $\widehat{X}^{\widehat{\boxplus}}$. We use this to reproduce the $d=3+1$, $N=1$ Wess-Zumino model and the $d=3+1$, $N=1$ supersymmetric $U(1)$ gauge theory with matter --- as in, e.g., Chap.\,V and Chap.\,VI \& part of Chap.\,VII of the classical Supersymmetry \& Supergravity textbook by Julius Wess and Jonathan Bagger --- and, hence, recast physicists' two most basic supersymmetric quantum field theories solidly into the realm of (complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded) $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry. Some traditional differential geometers' ways of understanding supersymmetric quantum field theories are incorporated into the notion of a purge-evaluation/index-contracting map ${\cal P}:C^\infty(X^{\mbox{physics}})\rightarrow C^\infty(\widehat{X})$ in the setting. This completes for the current case a $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry language we sought for in D(14.1), footnote 2, that can directly link to the study of supersymmetry in particle physics. Once generalized to the nonabelian case in all dimensions and extended $N\ge 2$, this prepares us for a fundamental (as opposed to solitonic) description of super D-branes parallel to Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz fundamental superstrings

Abstract:We comment on the fact that certain mathematical models that have been proposed in the quantum gravity literature, may not be subject to experimental checks, even if they turn out to be mathematically well defined. This means that they would be indistinguishable from other models, with a smaller number of quantum states. These considerations follow from very general properties of quantum measurement theory and classical gravity.

Abstract:We address a subject that could have been analyzed century ago: how does the universe of general relativity look like when it would have been filled with solid matter? Solids break spontaneously the translations and rotations of space itself. Only rather recently it was realized in various context that the order parameter of the solid has a relation to Einsteins dynamical space time which is similar to the role of a Higgs field in a Yang-Mills gauge theory. Such a "crystal gravity" is therefore like the Higgs phase of gravity. The usual Higgs phases are characterized by a special phenomenology. A case in point is superconductivity exhibiting phenomena like the Type II phase, characterized by the emergence of an Abrikosov lattice of quantized magnetic fluxes absorbing the external magnetic field. What to expect in the gravitational setting? The theory of elasticity is the universal effective field theory associated with the breaking of space translations and rotations having a similar status as the phase action describing a neutral superfluid. A geometrical formulation appeared in its long history, similar in structure to general relativity, which greatly facilitates the marriage of both theories. With as main limitation that we focus entirely on stationary circumstances -- the dynamical theory is greatly complicated by the lack of Lorentz invariance -- we will present a first exploration of a remarkably rich and often simple physics of "Higgsed gravity".

Abstract:I give my perspective on promising directions for high energy physics in coming years. 1 The Standard Model: Glory and Discontents 1. Our standard model, or core theory, understood to consist of the SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) gauge theory of strong and electroweak interactions, together with minimally coupled Einstein gravity – the gauge theory of local Lorentz invariance – is a glorious achievement. It provides a firm foundation for chemistry, astrophysics, and all practical forms of engineering. It justifies and fulfills the great reductionist program of understanding the physical world based on precise mathematical understanding of the interactions among a few basic building-blocks. Consider, for example, the direct numerical solution of QCD. Here there are no uncontrolled approximations, no perturbation theory, no cutoff, and no room for fudge-factors. A handful of parameters, inserted into a highly constrained theory of extraordinary symmetry, either will or won’t account for the incredible wealth of measured phenomena in the strong interaction. And it certainly appears that they do. Abstract:Theoretical physicists describe nature by i) building a theory model and ii) determining the model parameters. The latter step involves the dual aspect of both fitting to the existing experimental data and satisfying abstract criteria like beauty, naturalness, etc. We use the Yukawa quark sector as a toy example to demonstrate how both of those tasks can be accomplished with machine learning techniques. We propose loss functions whose minimization results in true models that are also beautiful as measured by three different criteria - uniformity, sparsity, or symmetry.

Abstract:The Platonic solids is the name traditionally given to the five regular convex polyhedra, namely the tetradron, the octahedron, the cube, the icosahedron and the dodecahedron. Perhaps strongly boosted by the towering historical influence of their namesake, these beautiful solids have, in well over two millenia, transcended traditional boundaries and entered the stage in a range of disciplines. Examples include natural philosophy and mathematics from classical antiquity, scientific modeling during the days of the european scientific revolution and visual arts ranging from the renaissance to modernity. Motivated by mathematical beauty and a rich history, we consider the Platonic solids in the context of modern quantum mechanics. Specifically, we construct Bell inequalities whose maximal violations are achieved with measurements pointing to the vertices of the Platonic solids. These Platonic Bell inequalities are constructed only by inspecting the visible symmetries of the Platonic solids. We also construct Bell inequalities for more general polyhedra and find a Bell inequality that is more robust to noise than the celebrated Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality. Finally, we elaborate on the tension between mathematical beauty, which was our initial motivation, and experimental friendliness, which is necessary in all empirical sciences.

Abstract:This text is a short but comprehensive introduction to the basics of supergeometry and includes some of the recent advances in colored supergeometry. We do not aim for a standard text that states results and proves them more or less rigorously, but all too often offers little insight to the uninformed reader. Instead we opted for a smooth exposition of the successive themes, choosing an order and an approach which are close to the way these pieces of mathematics could have been or were discovered, thereby highlighting the reasons for the various choices and facilitating deeper understanding. We hope that the text will be useful for PhD students and researchers who wish to acquire knowledge in the geometry of supersymmetry.

Abstract:In recent years, criticism of the methodology of particle physics beyond the Standard Model has increased, diagnosing too much reliance on aesthetic criteria for theory development and evaluation. Faced with several decades of experimental confirmation of all theories lacking, we subject four aesthetic criteria - simplicity, symmetry, elegance, and inevitability -, regularly mentioned in theory evaluation, to critical examination. We find that these criteria, all of which can be reduced to a desire for simplicity, have repeatedly misled modern particle physics. This is largely due to the lack of metatheoretical permanence of a uniform conception of simplicity. The reductionist claim of particle physics - the search for simple fundamental principles in a complex world - will be worked out as the reason why this discipline is particularly susceptible to the aesthetic appeal of simplicity. Thus, compared to disciplines dealing with complex phenomena, aesthetic criteria are much more frequently applied, exposing particle physics to the risk of missteps and dead ends.

On Geometry and Symmetries in Classical and Quantum Theories of Gauge Gravity

Abstract:Spin Foam and Loop approaches to Quantum Gravity reformulate Einstein's theory of relativity in terms of connection variables. The metric properties are encoded in face bivectors/conjugate fluxes that are required to satisfy certain conditions, in order to allow for their geometric interpretation. We show that the (sub-)set of the so-called `volume simplicity constraints' is not implemented properly in the current EPRL-FK spinfoam vertex amplitude, if extended to arbitrary polyhedra. We then propose that a certain knot-invariant of the bivector geometry, induced on the boundary graph, encodes the missing conditions, allowing for reconstruction of a polytope from its two-dimensional faces. Implemented in the quantum amplitude, this leads to corrected semi-classical asymptotics for a hypercuboid, and is conjectured to be non-trivial in more general situations. The analysis of linear version of `volume simplicity' suggests to switch from hypersurface normals to edge lengths, that is from 3-forms directly to tetrads -- in the extended configuration space of the Plebanski constrained formulation. We then give the corresponding dual version of linear simplicity constraints, which prescribe 3d volume for the polyhedral faces in the boundary of a 4d polytope. We also analyse the status of metric/vielbein degrees of freedom and the role of local translations in the classical Einstein-Cartan gravity, viewed as a Poincare gauge theory. The relation with the diffeomorphism symmetry is established through the key concept of development, which generalizes parallel transport of vectors in the geometric theory of Cartan connections. We advocate the latter to be the natural gauge-theoretic framework for the theory of relativity.

Abstract:We formulate a geometric measurement theory of dynamical classical systems possessing both continuous and discrete degrees of freedom. The approach is covariant with respect to choices of clocks and canonically incorporates laboratories. The latter are embedded symplectic submanifolds of an odd-dimensional symplectic structure. When suitably defined, symplectic geometry in odd dimensions is exactly the structure needed for covariance. A fundamentally probabilistic viewpoint allows classical supergeometries to describe discrete dynamics. We solve the problem of how to construct probabilistic measures on supermanifolds given a (possibly odd dimensional) supersymplectic structure. This relies on a superanalog of the Hodge star for differential forms and a description of probabilities by convex cones. We also show how stochastic processes such as Markov chains can be described by supergeometry.

Abstract:This lecture consists of two parts. The first is a (totally unsystematic) survey of some of the high points in the evolution of gravity and its successors, primarily in the course of the past century. The second summarizes some new work on surprising properties of higher $(> 1)$ spin fields in cosmological backgrounds: the presence of $Ł$ gives rise to discrete sets of massive models endowed with gauge invariances, that divide the ($m^2, Ł$) plane into unitary and non-unitary phases. The unitary region common to fermions and bosons shrinks to flat space ($ Ł\to 0 $) as their spins increase.
