Abstract:The mechanical properties of Mg-Al alloys are greatly influenced by the complex intermetallic phase Mg$_{17}$Al$_{12}$, which is the most dominant precipitate found in this alloy system. The interaction of basal edge and 30$^\text{o}$ dislocations with Mg$_{17}$Al$_{12}$ precipitates is studied by molecular dynamics and statics simulations, varying the inter-precipitate spacing ($L$), and size ($D$), shape and orientation of the precipitates. The critical resolved shear stress $\tau_c$ to pass an array of precipitates follows the usual $\ln((1/D + 1/L)^{-1})$ proportionality. In all cases but the smallest precipitate, the dislocations pass the obstacles by depositing dislocation segments in the disordered interphase boundary rather than shearing the precipitate or leaving Orowan loops in the matrix around the precipitate. An absorbed dislocation increases the stress necessary for a second dislocation to pass the precipitate also by absorbing dislocation segments into the boundary. Replacing the precipitate with a void of identical size and shape decreases the critical passing stress and work hardening contribution while an artificially impenetrable Mg$_{17}$Al$_{12}$ precipitate increases both. These insights will help improve mesoscale models of hardening by incoherent particles.

Abstract:The interaction between Mg edge basal dislocations and rod-shaped $\beta_1'$-MgZn$_2$ precipitates was studied by atomistic simulations using a new interatomic potential. The atomistic model was carefully built taking into account the experimental information about the orientation relationship between the matrix and the precipitate to ensure minimum energy interfaces. It was found that the dislocations initially overcame the precipitate by the formation of an Orowan loop that penetrated in the precipitate. The precipitate was finally sheared after several Orowan loops were piled-up. The number of loops necessary to shear the precipitate decreased as precipitate cross-section decreased and the temperature increased but was independent of the precipitate spacing. Precipitate shearing did not take place along well-defined crystallographic planes but it was triggered by the accumulation of the elastic energy in the precipitate which finally led to formation of an amorphous layer below and above the slip plane of the basal dislocations. The kink induced in the precipitate by this mechanism was in good agreement with transmission electron microscopy observations.

Abstract:The mechanisms of dislocation/precipitate interactions were analyzed in an Al-Cu alloy containing a homogeneous dispersion of $\theta'$ precipitates by means of discrete dislocation dynamics simulations. The simulations were carried out within the framework of the discrete-continuous method and the precipitates were assumed to be impenetrable by dislocations. The main parameters that determine the dislocation/precipitate interactions (elastic mismatch, stress-free transformation strains, dislocation mobility and cross-slip rate) were obtained from atomistic simulations, while the size, shape, spatial distribution and volume fraction of the precipitates were obtained from transmission electron microscopy. The predictions of the critical resolved shear stress (including the contribution of solid solution) were in agreement with the experimental results obtained by means of compression tests in micropillars of the Al-Cu alloy oriented for single slip. The simulations revealed that the most important contribution to the precipitation hardening of the alloy was provided by the stress-free transformation strains followed by the solution hardening and the Orowan mechanism due to the bow-out of the dislocations around the precipitates.

Abstract:In certain naturally aged aluminum alloys, significant strengthening can be obtained due to the decomposition of a super-saturated solid solution into clusters. The origins of such strengthening remain unclear due to the challenge of differentiating solute cluster strengthening from solid solution or precipitate strengthening. To shed light on the origin of cluster strengthening in aluminum alloys, the interaction between the smallest possible type of clusters (i.e. dimers) and moving dislocations in a model Al–Mg alloy is studied using atomistic simulations. Additionally, theoretical models for both the parelastic and dielastic interactions between clusters and dislocations is used to identify which factor among order strengthening, elastic interaction, and change of stacking fault energy controls cluster strengthening. The comparison of the results from these models to that of the atomistic simulations show that in the case of Mg dimers, the strength of the strongest ones are dominated by the dielastic contribution through the change of stacking fault energy.

Abstract:Nanoscale-sized precipitates are directly tied to the strength and ductility of heat-treatable Al−Mg−Si alloys, thus understanding the precipitation is crucial in adjusting and optimizing their mechanical properties. In this work, precipitation behaviors of the primary strengthening phases in Al−Mg−Si alloys are investigated in light of the crystallographic, thermodynamic and kinetic analysis. The structural stability and atomic clusters of the precipitated phases are analyzed by energetic computation and central force field cluster model. The precipitation microstructures and interfacial configurations are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. These results are then used as essential inputs for the atomistic calculations at both ground state and finite temperatures to understand the morphological formation. Accordingly, the size evolution of the primary strengthening phase is obtained within a modelling framework and compared with the microstructure data measured from experiments. Furthermore, an underlying thermo-kinetic correlation behind the precipitation is analyzed in combination with tensile properties. Our investigation offers an insight into understanding the connection among thermo-kinetics, microstructures, and mechanical properties of Al−Mg−Si alloys, and thus will provide a theoretical guidance for developing alloys with desirable strength-ductility combination.

Interactions between basal dislocations and $β_1'$ precipitates in Mg-4Zn alloy: mechanisms and strengthening

Abstract:The mechanisms of dislocation/precipitate interaction as well as the critical resolved shear stress were determined as a function of temperature in a Mg-4 wt. % Zn alloy by means of micropillar compression tests. It was found that the mechanical properties were independent of the micropillar size when the cross-section was $>$ 3 x 3 $\mu$m$^2$. Transmission electron microscopy showed that deformation involved a mixture of dislocation bowing around the precipitates and precipitate shearing. The initial yield strength was compatible with the predictions of the Orowan model for dislocation bowing around the precipitates. Nevertheless, precipitate shearing was dominant afterwards, leading to the formation of slip bands in which the rod precipitates were transformed into globular particles, limiting the strain hardening. The importance of precipitate shearing increased with temperature and was responsible for the reduction in the mechanical properties of the alloy from 23C to 100C.

Abstract:Precipitation hardening is the most effective strategy to enhance the mechanical properties of metals. Dislocation mechanisms to control strengthening during precipitation have been demonstrated extensively. However, owing to the complexity of different precipitates in alloys, variations in ductility caused by precipitation are complex and have not been clarified so far. In this study, the effects of precipitation on ductility in precipitation hardening aluminium alloys are investigated based on a modified dislocation-based approach and experimental characterisation. The AlMgScZr alloy with spherical Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates is used as a model alloy system to understand the effects of precipitation on ductility. Via heat treatment, shearable and nonshearable Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates are introduced in the AlMg matrix. The results show that the ductility of AlMgScZr alloy decreases when shearable precipitates occur, while it increases with shearable precipitates being replaced by nonshearable precipitates. The variation in ductility of AlMgScZr alloy is mainly controlled by the dynamic recovery rate of the dislocations. Finally, by analysing the different precipitate–dislocation interactions and evaluating the dislocation density evolution during deformation, the dislocation mechanisms of ductility during precipitation for AlMgScZr alloy are demonstrated. This study reveals the dislocation mechanism for controlling ductility during precipitation for AlMgScZr alloy which can provide a theoretical foundation for the design of high-performance structural materials.

Abstract:The distribution and partitioning of solute atoms in age-hardenable aluminum (Al) alloys markedly impact strength, ductility and failure of alloy materials, thus rendering the understanding of dislocation-obstacle (solute-rich features) interactions crucial in the development of a new class of heat-treatable Al alloys. Here, we investigate the slip mechanisms, strain localization and strain hardening of a high Mg-content (≥ 6 wt.%) lightweight AlMgZn-based crossover alloy aged to different conditions with the focus on the dislocation-obstacle interactions. It is found that due to different elemental partitioning between matrix and solute-rich features the interaction of dislocations with obstacles can be drastically different for samples with varying precipitates. The dislocations in the under-aged and near peak-aged samples show predominantly planar slip, which produces strain localization. Whereas in the over-aged sample, gliding dislocations initially bend between adjacent precipitates lying in the slip planes, and subsequently surmount them by local cross slip processes, giving rise to homogeneous slip. Through analyzing the intrinsically different strain hardening ability and characterizing deformation-induced specific dislocation configurations in the solution-treated and aged samples, it is discovered that strain localization in the form of coarse slip bands induces strain hardening in the under-aged material. To understand the enhanced strain hardening observed in the under-aged sample, four key influencing factors are proposed. In addition, the predicted yield strengths for the solution-treated and artificially aged materials match well with those experimentally measured values. The experimental results demonstrated in the current study not only apply for the microstructure design of high-performance age-hardenable Al-based alloys, they also provide new insights into understanding of general precipitation-hardened metallic alloys.

Abstract:As potential cast and wrought Mg alloys, Mg-X (X=Al, Zn, Sn) based alloys have attracted great interest. This work is to develop a dataset of atomic mobilities that is valid over a wide composition range. With the obtained mobilities, and a compatible thermodynamic description, as well as thermophysical parameters, simulations are performed to predict the characteristics of precipitation evolution. Examples are presented for the isothermal aging processes in Mg-x wt.%Al (x = 5.9, 6, 8.8, 9), Mg-x wt.%Zn (x = 6, 6.2, 8, 8.65), Mg-x wt.%Sn (x = 6.04, 6.92, 8.64) alloys. The simulated size distribution, number density and volume fraction of precipitates reasonably account for the experimental results and provide additional information for further alloy composition design and heat treatment optimization.

In the present study, we investigated the extent to which the deformation of Al2Ca is driven by dislocations in the Mg matrix by simulating the interactions between the basal edge dislocations and Al2Ca particles. In particular, the effects of the interparticle spacing, particle orientation, and particle size were considered. Shearing of small particles and dislocation cross-slips near large particles were observed. Both events contribute to strengthening, and accommodate to plasticity. The shear resistance of the dislocation to bypass the particles increased as the particle size increased. The critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for activating dislocations and stacking faults was easier to reach for small Al2Ca particles owing to the higher local shear stress, which is consistent with the experimental observations. Overall, this work elucidates the driving force for Al2Ca particles in Mg–Al–Ca alloys to undergo plastic deformation.

Abstract:Currently, there is a significant interest in magnesium (Mg) alloys for structural and functional applications. Mg alloys are lightweight materials (1.7–2.0 g/cm 3 ), whose density is significantly lesser than that of titanium alloys and stainless steels. Furthermore, from the perspective of biomedical devices, they are biodegradable, bioresorbable and biocompatible. The objective of this work is to investigate the transition from grain boundary precipitation behaviour in the as-cast alloy to nanoscale precipitation during triaxial forging, with particular emphasis on exploring the application of small-angle X-ray scattering technique to investigate nanoscale precipitation and complement with the conventional approach of X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy.

Abstract:Strengthening in age-hardenable alloys is mainly achieved through nano-scale precipitates whose formation paths from the atomic-scale, solute-enriched entities are rarely analyzed and understood in a directly-verifiable way. Here, we discover a pathway for the earliest-stage precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys: solute clustering leading to three successive variants of FCC clusters, followed by the formation of non-FCC $GP$-$zones$. The clusters, which originally assume a spherical morphology ($C1$), evolve into elongated clusters and orient themselves on $\{111\}_{Al}$ ($C2$) and subsequently on $\{100\}_{Al}$ planes and $<$$100$$>_{Al}$ directions ($C3$). We also analyze the association of quenched-in dislocations with clustering phenomena. The results of this work can open a new frontier in advancing alloy-process-property design for commercially-important age-hardenable Al alloys.

Crystal Structure, Energetics, and Phase Stability of Strengthening Precipitates in Mg Alloys: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:Magnesium alloys have attracted increasing interest due to their potential use as light-weight structural materials but their application is limited by their low strength compared to conventional alloys. Age hardening is commonly employed to form strengthening precipitates in such alloys, which impedes the motion of dislocations, and leads to improved strength. However, the exact composition, crystal structure, and energetics of many of these strengthening precipitates are either unknown or not clearly resolved, making the precise engineering and design of such alloys difficult. Toward this end, we use first-principles density functional theory calculations to elucidate the crystal structures and energetics of a very large set of precipitates in magnesium alloys. For cases where the precipitate crystal structure is not known, we comprehensively search over decorations of many prototype structures, including hcp superstructures, and in addition, perform global structural optimization using the Minima Hopping Method to predict suitable crystal structures. For all the strengthening precipitates, we calculate the formation energies, construct the respective zero temperature convex hulls, and analyze their stabilities. We show that the bulk formation energies per solute atom (essentially, the solute chemical potentials) decrease along the observed sequences of precipitation, validating our calculations in Mg-{Nd, Gd, Y, Y-Nd, Nd-Zn, Gd-Zn, Y-Zn, Al, Zn, Sn, Al-Ca, Ca-Zn} alloy systems. In addition, we construct a monolayer model for the Guinier-Preston zones (GP zones) observed in the Mg-Nd-Zn system during early stages of age hardening, and thereby explain the formation of the γ'' (Mg5(Nd,Zn)) phase from the GP zones, as observed in experiments.

Abstract:The influence of minor solute additions of Mg, Ag and Zn and their combinations on the precipitation kinetics and strengthening of an Al-Cu-Li alloy has been systematically investigated. Combining differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) provides information on how alloy chemistry changes the precipitation sequence, the precipitation kinetics in non – isothermal and in isothermal conditions, and the related strengthening. When adding Mg, the precipitation kinetics are strongly accelerated, which is shown to be related to the dominant formation of T1 precipitates. When adding Ag and Zn together with Mg, further enhancement of precipitation kinetics is observed, without change of the precipitation sequence, probably due to a more efficient nucleation of T1. The intrinsic strengthening potential of the T1 phase is shown to be unchanged by the addition of Ag and Zn, and the higher strength reached in the alloys containing these additions is shown to be due to a higher precipitate volume fraction.

A high resolution transmission electron microscope study of early stage precipitation on dislocation lines in Al-Zn-Mg

Abstract:The weak beam transmission electron microscopy technique was employed to study the early stages of precipitation on dislocation lines in Al-3.87 wt pct Zn-1.79 wt pct Mg. The heterogeneous precipitation sequence was found to follow the homogeneous sequence in this alloy. The interaction between the initial coherent precipitate particles and the strain fields of the catalyzing dislocations produced “gaps” of background intensity at precipitate locations along the otherwise continuous weak beam images of the dislocation lines. A simple model was developed to relate a distribution of measured weak beam gap lengths to a particle size distribution at a given aging treatment. In this manner the growth kinetics of the initial precipitate phase was observed; it was found that the precipitation followed the Cottrell-Bilbyt2/3law, suggesting that matrix dislocations may assist the growth of heterogeneous precipitates in a manner analogous to grain boundary “collector plates.” Weak beam microscopy was found to be superior to standard bright field microscopy for the current study. Particles too small to be visible in bright field were revealed in weak beam. Weak beam observations also indicated that the coherent precipitate particles were positioned asymmetrically about the dislocation cores.

Abstract:Flow stress and work hardening behaviors, as two important aspects of mechanical behaviors, have been studied extensively and their interpretation for the case of pure metals via dislocation theory is well established. The introduction of precipitates inevitably affects the flow stress and work hardening rate, since the precipitates can evidently change the dislocation behaviors, both their gliding facilities and their storage mechanisms. Thus, different precipitate-dislocation interaction modes (i.e. shearing and bypassing mechanisms) would lead to different dislocation behaviors and resultant different flow stress and work hardening behaviors. In this study, we investigate the influence of shearable, non-shearable and mixed shearable/non-shearable precipitates on flow stress and work hardening behaviors in the case of AlMgScZr alloys, where precipitates and solid solution can be decoupled, based on experiments and a modified dislocation-based model. We show that, the introduction of shearable precipitates and shearable/non-shearable transition have important effects on flow stress and work hardening behaviors. By quantitatively characterizing different precipitate-dislocation interactions and the evolution of dislocation density during the deformation, the intrinsic influencing mechanisms of precipitates on flow stress and work hardening behaviors are demonstrated.

Abstract:The second-phase particles in magnesium alloys could affect the mechanical properties of the material significantly. In this work, 3D finite element models with explicit incorporation of second-phase particles are established. The simulations are calibrated with the experimental results of the Mg-1Gd alloy. The influences of factors, such as the particle distribution, size, and orientation of cylindrical particles, on precipitation hardening are investigated in detail. Three interface conditions between particles and the matrix—perfect bonding and high- and low-strength bonding—are studied at the same time. The interface conditions are shown to exert a stronger influence on precipitation hardening compared to the factors of particle distribution and size. In contrast, the influence of the orientation of cylindrical particles at grain boundaries outweighs the effect of interface property. When second-phase particles are relatively large and all located at grain boundaries, the hardening effect can be improved, and the magnesium alloy shows relatively high flow stress. However, the high hardening effect from the second-phase particles could result in high local stress concentration and possible early failure or low ductility of Mg alloys.

Abstract:MgY based alloys exhibit a promising combination of strength and deformability through tuning precipitation and solute strengthening mechanisms and tailoring the activity of non-basal dislocations. Understanding the precipitation sequence of MgY based alloys and its dependence on Yttrium concentration in the matrix will provide a guideline for fine tuning structure, morphology and distribution of precipitates in MgY based alloys. In this paper, we explore the precipitation behaviors of Mg11Y (wt%) and Mg-11Y-1Al (wt%) alloys using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, and rationalize the experimental observations based on first-principles density functional theory calculations. The precipitation sequence during ageing at 225 °C is identified to be SSSS → clusters/G.P. Zones →β′ (Mg7Y) → β′′/βt′′ (Mg3Y). A novel βt′′ phase forms through in-situ transformation from the β′ phase, which shares the same Mg3Y composition with D019-β′′ phase and exhibits the same cbco-structure as β′ phase in MgY based alloys.
