Abstract:In this paper, we study effective recursion formulae for computing intersection numbers of mixed psi and kappa classes on moduli spaces of curves. By using the celebrated Witten-Kontsevich theorem, we generalize Mulase-Safnuk form of Mirzakhani's recursion and prove a recursion formula of higher Weil-Petersson volumes. We also present recursion formulae to compute intersection pairings in the tautological rings of moduli spaces of curves.
Explicit formulas for the Grothendieck class of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$

Abstract:We obtain explicit expressions for the class in the Grothendieck group of varieties of the moduli space of genus 0 stable curves with n marked points. This information is equivalent to the Poincaré polynomial; it implies explicit expressions for the Betti numbers of the moduli space in terms of Stirling numbers or, alternatively, Bernoulli numbers. The expressions are obtained by solving a differential equation characterizing the generating function for the Grothendieck class as shown in work of Yuri Manin from the 1990s. This differential equation is equivalent to S. Keel's recursion for the Betti numbers of these moduli spaces. Our proof reduces the solution to two combinatorial identities which follow from applications of Lagrange series. We also study generating functions for the individual Betti numbers. In previous work it had been shown that these functions are determined by a set of polynomials with positive rational coefficients, which are conjecturally log-concave. We verify this conjecture for many infinite families of these polynomials, corresponding to the generating functions for the $2k$-Betti numbers of the moduli spaces for all $k\le 100$. Further, studying these polynomials allows us to prove that the generating function for the Grothendieck class of the moduli spaces may be written as a series of rational functions in the Lefschetz motive and the principal branch of the Lambert W-function. We include an interpretation of the main result in terms of Stirling matrices and a discussion of the Euler characteristic of the moduli space.

Abstract:Milne's correcting factor is a numerical invariant playing an important role in formulas for special values of zeta functions of varieties over finite fields. We show that Milne's factor is simply the Euler characteristic of the derived de Rham complex (relative to $\mathbb{Z}$) modulo the Hodge filtration.

Abstract:We assign to each Young diagram $\lambda$ a subset $\mathcal{B}_{\lambda'}$ of the collection of Garsia-Stanton descent monomials, and prove that it determines a basis of the Garsia-Procesi module $R_\lambda$, whose graded character is the Hall-Littlewood polynomial $\tilde{H}_{\lambda}[X;t]$. This basis is a major index analogue of the basis $\mathcal{B}_\lambda \subset R_\lambda$ defined by certain recursions in due to Garsia and Procesi, in the same way that the descent basis is related to the Artin basis of the coinvariant algebra $R_n$, which in fact corresponds to the case when $\lambda=1^n$. By anti-symmetrizing a subset of this basis with respect to the corresponding Young subgroup under the Springer action, we obtain a basis in the parabolic case, as well as a corresponding formula for the expansion of $\tilde{H}_{\lambda}[X;t]$. Despite a similar appearance, it does not appear obvious how to connect these formulas appear to the specialization of the modified Macdonald formula of Haglund, Haiman and Loehr at $q=0$.

Abstract:We study the Gauss and Jacobi sums from a viewpoint of motives. We exhibit isomorphisms between Chow motives arising from the Artin-Schreier curve and the Fermat varieties over a finite field, that can be regarded as (and yield a new proof of) classically known relations among Gauss and Jacobi sums such as Davenport-Hasse's multiplication formula. As a key step, we define motivic analogues of the Gauss and Jacobi sums as algebraic correspondences, and show that they represent the Frobenius endomorphisms of such motives. This generalizes Coleman's result for curves. These results are applied to investigate the group of invertible Chow motives with coefficients in a cyclotomic field.

Abstract:In this paper we prove motivic versions of the Langlands-Shelstad Fundamental Lemma and Ngô's Geometric Stabilization. To achieve this, we follow the strategy from the recent proof by Groechenig, Wyss and Ziegler which avoided the use of perverse sheaves using instead $p$-adic integration and Tate duality. We make a key use of a construction of Denef and Loeser which assigns a virtual motive to any definable set in the theory of pseudo-finite fields.

Milnor-Witt motivic cohomology and linear algebraic groups

Abstract:This article presents two key computations in MW-motivic cohomology. Firstly, we compute the MW-motivic cohomology of the symplectic groups $Sp_{2n}$ for any $n\in\mathbb{N}$ using the $Sp$-orientation and the associated Borel classes. Secondly, following the classical computations and using the analogue in $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy of the Leray spectral sequence, we compute the $\eta$-inverted MW-motivic cohomology of general Stiefel varieties, obtaining in particular the computation of the $\eta$-inverted MW-motivic cohomology of the general linear groups $GL_n$ and the special linear groups $SL_n$ for any $n\in\mathbb{N}$. Finally, we determine the multiplicative structures of these total cohomology groups.

Abstract:The theory of reciprocity sheaves due to Kahn-Saito-Yamazaki is a powerful framework to study invariants of smooth varieties via invariants of pairs $(X,D)$ of a variety $X$ and a divisor $D$. We develop a generalization of this theory where $D$ can be a $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor. As an application, we provide a motivic construction of the de Rham-Witt complex, which is analogous to the motivic construction of the Milnor $K$-theory due to Suslin-Voevodsky.

Abstract:Already in the 1960s Grothendieck understood that one could obtain an almost entirely satisfactory theory of motives over a finite field when one assumes the full Tate conjecture. In this note we prove a similar result for motivic complexes. In particular Beilinson's Q-algebra of "correspondences at the generic point" is then defined for all connected varieties. We compute this for all smooth projective varieties (hence also for varieties birational to such a variety).

Abstract:We construct elements in the motivic cohomology of certain rank 4 weight 3 Calabi-Yau motives, and write down explicit expressions for the regulators of these elements in the context of conjectures on $L$-values such as those of Beilinson or Bloch-Kato. We apply a combination of three ideas: (i) that a motive can be made to vary in a family in such a way that a desired motivic cohomology class is realized by relative cohomology; (ii) that there are ways to construct higher-rank (such as $2\times 2$) regulators from a single family; and (iii) that one can arrange elements in $H^4_{\text{Mot}}(X,\mathbb{Z}(p))$ with different $p$'s by choosing hypergeometric families with different local exponents.

Additivity and Double Coset formulae for the Motivic and Étale Becker-Gottlieb transfer

Abstract:In this paper, which is a continuation of earlier work by the first author and Gunnar Carlsson, one of the first results we establish is the additivity of the motivic Becker-Gottlieb transfer, as well as their étale realizations. This extends the additivity results the authors already established for the corresponding traces. We then apply this to derive several important consequences: for example, in addition to obtaining the analogues of various double coset formulae known in the classical setting of algebraic topology, we also obtain applications to Brauer groups of homogeneous spaces associated to reductive groups over separably closed fields. We also consider the relationship between the transfer on schemes provided with a compatible action by a $1$-parameter subgroup and the transfer associated to the fixed point scheme of the $1$-parameter subgroup.

On the arithmetic of polynomials over a number field

Abstract:Counterparts of several classical results of number theory are proven for the ring of polynomials with coefficients in a number field. A theorem of Milnor that determines the Witt ring of a function field is applied to prove an analogue of Gauss's principal genus theorem for binary quadratic forms with polynomial coefficients. This is used to help understand when and why quadratic reciprocity fails in these polynomial rings. Another application is a count of the number of cyclic subgroups whose order is divisible by four in the primary decomposition of the torsion subgroup of the Jacobian of certain hyperelliptic curves. Invariant theory is applied to prove an analogue of a classical theorem of Fueter to give criteria for an elliptic curve with a polynomial discriminant and zero $j$-invariant to have no affine points over the associated function field.

Product formulas for the Higher Bessel functions

Abstract:We consider the generating function $\Phi^{(N)}$ for the reciprocals $N$-th power of factorials. We show a connection of product formulas for such series with the periods for certain families of algebraic hypersurfaces. For these families we describe their singular loci. We show that these singular loci are given by zeros of the Buchstaber-Rees polynomials, which define $N$-valued group laws. We describe a generalized Frobenius method and use it to obtain special expansions for multiplication kernels in the sense of Kontsevich. Using these expansions we provide some experimental results that connect $N$-Bessel kernels and the hierarchies of the palindromic unimodal polynomials. We study the properties of such polynomials and conjecture positivity of their roots. We also discuss the connection with Kloosterman motives as a version of the mirror duality.

Abstract:In this paper, we produce a cellular motivic spectrum of motivic modular forms over $\R$ and $\C$, answering positively to a conjecture of Dan Isaksen. This spectrum is constructed to have the appropriate cohomology, as a module over the relevant motivic Steenrod algebra. We first produce a $\G$-equivariant version of this spectrum, and then use a machinery to construct a motivic spectrum from an equivariant one. We believe that this machinery will be of independent interest.

Abstract:We provide a programmable recursive algorithm for the $\mathbb{S}_n$-representations on the cohomology of the moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$ of $n$-pointed stable curves of genus 0. As an application, we find explicit inductive and asymptotic formulas for the invariant part $H^*(\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}/\mathbb{S}_n)$ and prove that its Poincaré polynomial is asymptotically log-concave. Based on numerical computations with our algorithm, we further conjecture that the sequence $\{H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n})\}$ of $\mathbb{S}_n$-modules is equivariantly log-concave.
