Abstract:In this note, we present a formula for the action of the primitive Milnor operations on generators of algebra of invariants of the general linear group $GL_n=GL(n, \mathbb F_p)$ in the polynomial algebra $P_n= \mathbb F_p[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n]$ with $p$ an odd prime number.

Abstract:Counterparts of several classical results of number theory are proven for the ring of polynomials with coefficients in a number field. A theorem of Milnor that determines the Witt ring of a function field is applied to prove an analogue of Gauss's principal genus theorem for binary quadratic forms with polynomial coefficients. This is used to help understand when and why quadratic reciprocity fails in these polynomial rings. Another application is a count of the number of cyclic subgroups whose order is divisible by four in the primary decomposition of the torsion subgroup of the Jacobian of certain hyperelliptic curves. Invariant theory is applied to prove an analogue of a classical theorem of Fueter to give criteria for an elliptic curve with a polynomial discriminant and zero $j$-invariant to have no affine points over the associated function field.

On Motivic and Arithmetic Refinements of Donaldson-Thomas invariants

Abstract:In recent years, a version of enumerative geometry over arbitrary fields has been developed and studied by Kass-Wickelgren, Levine, and others, in which the counts obtained are not integers but quadratic forms. Aiming to understand the relation to other "refined invariants", and especially their possible interpretation in quantum theory, we explain how to obtain a quadratic version of Donaldson-Thomas invariants from the motivic invariants defined in the work of Kontsevich and Soibelman and pose some questions. We calculate these invariants in a few simple examples that provide standard tests for these questions, including degree zero invariants of $\mathbb A^3$ and higher-genus Gopakumar-Vafa invariants recently studied by Liu and Ruan. The comparison with known real and complex counts plays a central role throughout.

Abstract:We determine the invariants, with arbitrary determinant twists, of the parabolic subgroups of the finite general linear group GL_n(q) acting on the tensor product of the symmetric algebra and the exterior algebra of the natural GL_n(q)-module V. In addition, we obtain the graded multiplicity of the Steinberg module of GL_n(q) in the tensor product of the symmetric algebra and the exterior algebra of V, twisted by an arbitrary determinant power.

Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. In this paper, analogs of Wilson?s and Wolstenholme?s theorems on the solution sets S+ = {n ? Z* p | n ? a + b ? ab (mod p)} and S? = {n ? Z* p | n ? a ? b ? ab (mod p)} are given, where Z* p denote a reduced residue system modulo p. We also establish congruences about sum and product of the quadratic residues in S+ or in S? modulo p. Finally, we raise a problem on how to solve Hadamard?s conjecture in the last section.

Abstract:Let $ G = C_p\times H $ be a finite group, where $ C_p $ is a cyclic group of prime order $ p $ and $ H $ is a $ p^{\prime} $-group. Let $ \mathbb{F} $ be an algebraically closed field in characteristic $ p $. Let $ V $ be a direct sum of $ m $ non-trivial indecomposable $ G $-modules such that the norm polynomials of the simple $ H $-modules are the power of the product of the basis elements of the dual. In previous work, we proved the periodicity property of the polynomial ring $ \mathbb{F}[V] $ with actions of $ G $. In this paper, by the periodicity property, we showed that $ \mathbb{F}[V]^G $ is generated by $ m $ norm polynomials together with homogeneous invariants of degree at most $ m|G|-{\rm dim}(V) $ and transfer invariants, which yields the well-known degree bound $ {\rm dim} $$ (V)\cdot(|G|-1) $. More precisely, we found that this bound gets less sharp as the dimensions of simple $ H $-modules increase.

Abstract:In this note, the first-order Dickson polynomials are introduced through a particular case of the expression of the trace of the $n^{th}$ power of a matrix in terms of powers of the trace and determinant of the matrix itself. The technique relies on the Cayley-Hamilton theorem and its application to the derivation of formulas due to Carlitz and to second-order Dickson polynomials is straightforward. Finally, generalization of Dickson polynomials over finite fields and multivariate Dickson polynomials are evoked as potential avenues of investigation in the same framework.

Abstract:Shintani's famous invariants conjecturally generate abelian extensions of real quadratic number fields and thus give a conjectural solution to Hilbert's 12th problem. In the present note, we find new expressions for Shintani's invariants by generalising an observation due to Yamamoto who showed that Shintani's invariants, originally expressed in terms of the double sine function, can be written in terms of the q-Pochhammer (or q-Exponential) function.

Abstract:The mod-2 arithmetic Milnor invariants, introduced by Morishita, provide a decomposition law for primes in canonical Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ with unitriangular Galois groups, and contain the Legendre and Redei symbols as special cases. Morishita further proposed a notion of mod-q arithmetic Milnor invariants, where q is a prime power, for number fields containing the q-th roots of unity and satisfying certain class field theory assumptions. We extend this theory from the number field context to general fields, by introducing a notion of a linking invariant for discrete valuations and orderings. We further express it as a Magnus homomorphism coefficient, and relate it to Massey product elements in Galois cohomology.

Abstract:In 1904, Dickson [5] stated a very important conjecture. Now people call it Dickson's conjecture. In 1958, Schinzel and Sierpinski [14] generalized Dickson's conjecture to the higher order integral polynomial case. However, they did not generalize Dickson's conjecture to the multivariable case. In 2006, Green and Tao [13] considered Dickson's conjecture in the multivariable case and gave directly a generalized Hardy-Littlewood estimation. But, the precise Dickson's conjecture in the multivariable case does not seem to have been formulated. In this paper, based on the idea in [15], we will try to complement this and give an equivalent form of Dickson's Conjecture, furthermore, generalize it to the multivariable case or a system of affine-linear forms on $N^k$ . We also give some remarks and evidences on conjectures in [15]. Finally, in Appendix, we briefly introduce the basic theory that several multivariable integral polynomials represent simultaneously prime numbers for infinitely many integral points.

Nilpotent Invariants for Generic Discrete Series of Real Groups

Abstract:Let $G(\mathbb{R})$ be a real reductive group. Suppose $\pi$ is an irreducible representation of $G(\mathbb{R})$ having a Whittaker model, and consider three invariants of $\pi$ related to nilpotents elements of the Lie algebra of $G$ (or its dual): the associated variety, the wave-front set, and the set of Whittaker data for which $\pi$ has a Whittaker model. If $\pi$ is a discrete series representation, these invariants are known to determine each other. We provide a self-contained account of this and related results, including an elementary proof that passage from $\pi$ to the three invariants defines natural bijections between the generic discrete series in an $L$-packet, the possible Whittaker data for $G(\mathbb{R})$, and the appropriate sets of nilpotent orbits. Given one of the three invariants, we also explain how to reconstruct the other two. Many of the results were known: we give simplified proofs for several of them, for instance a simple proof (for generic discrete series) that the associated variety and the wave-front set are related by the Kostant-Sekiguchi correspondence.

Generating functions for fixed points of the Mullineux map

Abstract:Mullineux defined an involution on the set of $e$-regular partitions of $n$. When $e=p$ is prime, these partitions label irreducible symmetric group modules in characteristic $p$. Mullineux's conjecture, since proven, was that this ``Mullineux map" described the effect on the labels of taking the tensor product with the one-dimensional signature representation. Counting irreducible modules fixed by this tensor product is related to counting irreducible modules for the alternating group $A_n$ in prime characteristic. In 1991, Andrews and Olsson worked out the generating function counting fixed points of Mullineux's map when $e=p$ is an odd prime (providing evidence in support of Mullineux's conjecture). In 1998, Bessenrodt and Olsson counted the fixed points in a $p$-block of weight $w$. We extend both results to arbitrary $e$, and determine the corresponding generating functions. When $e$ is odd but not prime the extension is immediate, while $e$ even requires additional work and the results, which are different, have not appeared in the literature.

On $μ$-invariants and isogenies for abelian varieties over function fields

Abstract:We give several formulas for how Iwasawa $\mu$-invariants of abelian varieties over unramified $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extensions of function fields change under isogeny. These are analogues of Schneider's formula in the number field setting. We also prove that the validity of the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (including the leading coefficient formula) over function fields is invariant under isogeny, without using the result of Kato--Trihan.

Combinatorial invariants for certain classes of non-abelian groups

Abstract:This article focuses on the study of zero-sum invariants of finite non-abelian groups. We address two main problems: the first centers on the ordered Davenport constant and the second on Gao's constant. We establish a connection between the ordered Davenport constant and the small Davenport constant for a finite non-abelian group of even order, which in turn gives a relation with the Noether number. Additionally, we confirm a conjecture of Gao and Li for a non-abelian group of order $2p^{\alpha}$, where $p$ is a prime. Furthermore, we prove a conjecture that connects the ordered Davenport constant to the Loewy length for certain classes of finite $2$-groups.

On Modular Invariants of Truncated Polynomial Rings in low ranks

Abstract:We verify the conjectures due to Lewis, Reiner and Stanton about the Hilbert series of the invariant ring of the truncated polynomial ring for all parabolic subgroups up to rank $3$. This is done by constructing an explicit set of generators for each invariant ring in question. We also propose a conjecture concerning the action of the Steenrod algebra and the Dickson algebra on a certain naturally occurring filtration of the invariant ring under the general linear group.

Abstract:In [1], we give Dickson's conjecture on $N^n$. In this paper, we further give Dickson's conjecture on $Z^n$ and obtain an equivalent form of Green-Tao's conjecture [2]. Based on our work, it is possible to establish a general theory that several multivariable integral polynomials on $Z^n$ represent simultaneously prime numbers for infinitely many integral points and generalize the analogy of Chinese Remainder Theorem in [3]. Dans [1], nous donnons la conjecture de Dickson sur $N^n$. Dans ce document, en outre nous accordons une conjecture de Dickson sur $Z^n$ et obtenons une forme équivalent de conjecture de Green-Tao [2]. Sur la base de nos travaux, il est possible d'établir une théorie générale que plusieurs polynômes intégraux multivariables sur $Z^n$ représentent simultanément les nombres premiers pour un nombre infini de points entiers et de généraliser les l'analogie de Théorème des Restes Chinois dans [3].

Abstract:In order to study certain algebraic objects, and notably algebraic groups, Serre introduced the notion on invariants, in particular cohomological invariants. The construction of non-trivial cohomological invariants of algebraic groups is an active area of modern research, and very few invariants are known in degree greater than 3. In the first chapter, we give a complete description of Witt and cohomological invariants of the functors In as combinations of fundamental invariants behaving like divided powers, whose construction relies crucially on lambda operations in the Grothendieck-Witt ring. We also study the behaviour of these invariants with respect to various operations such as products or similitudes. The second chapter is dedicated to the construction of a "mixed" Witt ring associated to an algebra with involution : the fundamental idea is to define the product of two $\epsilon$-hermitian forms using a Morita equivalence given by the involution trace form of the algebra. We also define lambda operations on the mixed Grothendieck-Witt ring, as well as a fundamental filtration imitating the split case. A particular attention is given to explicit calculations in the case of algebras of index 2. We use those tools in the third chapter to mimic the constructions of chapter 1 in the framework of hermitian forms, and thus construct cohomological invariants of algebras with involution, with more detailed results in index 2. The main interest is to be in principle able to define non-trivial invariants of arbitrarily high degree, although the index constitues a form of obstruction.

Abstract:Milne's correcting factor is a numerical invariant playing an important role in formulas for special values of zeta functions of varieties over finite fields. We show that Milne's factor is simply the Euler characteristic of the derived de Rham complex (relative to $\mathbb{Z}$) modulo the Hodge filtration.

Abstract:Let X be a normal complex algebraic variety, and p a prime. We show that there exists an integer N=N(X, p) such that: any non-trivial, irreducible representation of the fundamental group of X, which arises from geometry, must be non-trivial mod p^N. The proof involves an analysis of the action of the Galois group of a finitely generated field on the etale fundamental group of X. We also prove many arithmetic statements about fundamental groups which are of independent interest, and give several applications.
