Abstract:This set of notes was designed to accompany two hours of lectures and practical exercises at the New Horizons for Psi workshop in Lisbon in July 2024 entitled "Studying fundamental fields with numerical relativity". Numerical relativity is a tool used to help understand the behaviours of metric and matter fields in dynamical, strong gravity situations. It has been used to study a range of situations involving fundamental fields, including superradiance, modified gravity, dynamical friction, dark matter accretion and early universe cosmology. The purpose of this course is to provide some background and hands-on experience in numerical relativity that will help students to better understand the possibilities provided by this tool, as well as its limitations.

Prospects of relativistic astrophysics: Viewpoints on the most influential journey

Abstract:Based on several recent developments in relativistic astrophysics and observational cosmology, this article discusses prospects of (1) theoretical structure of General Relativity (GR) in the new era and (2) submission of GR to new and previously unanticipated tests. It explores the internal theoretical challenges experienced by the theory and challenges produced by it in the otherwise successful journey of 100 years. Gravitational collapse, geometrization of laws of physics, absence of strong field astronomical tests, the dark components of the universe (Cold Dark Matter (CDM) + Cosmological Constant ($\Lambda$ ) or something similar) and cosmological inflation have not only created serious challenges for the theory but also have ignited contemplation for alternatives and attempts for constraining them through observations. The article first explains the nature of the theory and how it was perceived by scientific community a century ago. It then highlights certain perspectives from cosmology and quantum gravity, the ultimate applications of the theory. With the advent of modern observing techniques, the theory has been experiencing tug of war with several tests. Our true journey with the theory has started only recently, thanks to the development of gravitational wave astronomy and extremely large telescopes some of which are and will be dedicated to test the theory by exploring previously uncharted regions of the universe. Incorporating several aspects of observational astronomy and cosmology, gravitational wave research and theoretical physics the article presents the new challenges created by the theory and also their prospects.

Abstract:The AstroCamp is an academic excellence program in the field of astronomy and physics for students in the last 3 years of pre-university education, which often includes a course (or a significant part thereof) on Relativity. After an introduction to the principles, goals and structure of the camp, I describe the approach followed by camp lecturers (myself and others) for teaching Special and General Relativity, and some lessons learned and feedback from the students. I also provide some thoughts on the differences between the physics and mathematics secondary school curricula in Portugal and in other countries, and on how these curricula could be modernized.

Abstract:This paper is based on a series of talks given at the ESI program on 'Mathematical Perspectives of Gravitation Beyond the Vacuum Regime' in February 2022. It is meant to be an introduction to the field of relativistic elasticity for readers with a good base in the mathematics of General Relativity with no necessary previous of knowledge of elasticity either in the classical or relativistic domain. Abstract:This document gathers the notes of a 30-hour review course on gravitation, which I delivered in January 2018 and January 2019 at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences of Cameroon (AIMS-Cameroon). Its main goal is to propose a big picture of gravitation, where Einstein's relativity arises as a natural increment to Newton's theory. It is designed for bachelor/master students who do not necessarily have prior knowledge about relativity. The students are nevertheless expected to be familiar with the fundamentals of Newton's mechanics and gravitation, for the first chapter to be a mere reformulation of known concepts. The second chapter then introduces special and general relativity at the same time, while the third chapter explores concrete manifestations of relativistic gravitation, notably gravitational waves and black holes. Each section corresponds, on average, to slightly more than a 2-hour black-board lecture. The numerous exercises must be considered part of the course itself; they are intended to stimulate active reading.

Abstract:Notes prepared for the introductory general relativity course PHYSICS 748 at The University of Auckland. They are designed to introduce general relativity to upper-year undergraduate students directly using the modern language of differential geometry but in a physically motivated way, and throughout keeping a logical flow from section to section and chapter to chapter. In doing so, they necessarily cover a number of topics either not normally treated in an introductory course, or from a novel perspective. These include for example: affine spaces, comparing and contrasting rank-2 tensors with matrices, integration on manifolds, the Rindler metric, including a proper near-source boundary condition for the Schwarzschild metric, approaching Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates from a Rindler perspective, and more.

Abstract:Computational atomic physics continues to play a crucial role in both increasing the understanding of fundamental physics (e.g., quantum electrodynamics and correlation) and producing atomic data for interpreting observations from large-scale research facilities ranging from fusion reactors to high-power laser systems, space-based telescopes and isotope separators. A number of different computational methods, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, is available to meet these tasks. Here, we review the relativistic multiconfiguration method as it applies to the General Relativistic Atomic Structure Package [grasp2018, C. Froese Fischer, G. Gaigalas, P. Jönsson, J. Bieroń, Comput. Phys. Commun. (2018). DOI: 10.1016/j.cpc.2018.10.032]. Abstract:These notes summarize the lectures about "Cosmic-ray propagation in extragalactic space and secondary messengers", focusing in particular on the interactions of cosmic-ray particles with the background photons in the Universe, including nuclear species heavier than hydrogen, and on the analytical computation of the expected cosmic-ray fluxes at Earth. The lectures were held at the Course 208 of the International School of Physics "Enrico Fermi" on "Foundations of Cosmic-Ray Astrophysics", in Varenna (Como, Italy) from June 23rd to June 29th, 2022. These notes are complementary to the content of the lectures held by Pasquale Dario Serpico at the same school.

Abstract:Introducing Modern Physics represents an increasingly urgent need, towards which physics education concentrates many efforts. In order to contribute to this attempt, at the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Roma Tre University in Rome we focused on the possibility of treating General Relativity (GR) at high school level. We started with an interactive activity addressed to students that exploits the rubber sheet analogy (RSA) to show various phenomena related to gravity using the concept of space-time. Then, having verified its effectiveness, we began to include it among the initiatives the Department carry for high school teacher professional development, with the explicit aim of making them capable of carrying on the activity autonomously in the classrooms. In this paper, we analyse the teacher training approach we realized, and all the materials developed.

Abstract:These notes are self-contained, with the first 7 chapters used in a one-semester course with recommended texts by Wald, by Misner, Thorne and Wheeler, and by Schutz. In its treatment of topics covered in these standard texts, the presentation here typically includes steps skipped in Wald or MTW. Treatments of gravitational waves, particle orbits in black-hole backgrounds, the Teukolsky equation, and the initial value equations are motivated in part by the discoveries of gravitational waves from the inspiral and coalescence of binary black holes and neutron stars, advances in numerical relativity, and the expected LISA space-based observatory. The notes begin with a detailed presentation of special relativity with a geometrical orientation, starting with with time dilation and length contraction and including relativistic particles, fluids, electromagnetism, and curvilinear coordinates. Chaps. 2-5 cover curvature, the Einstein equation, relativistic stars, and black holes. Chap. 6, on gravitational waves, includes a discussion of detection and noise. Chap. 7 is a brief introduction to cosmology, deriving the metrics of homogeneous isotropic space, the equations governing a universe with matter, radiation and vacuum energy, and their solutions, and discussions of the cosmological redshift and on using gravitational waves to measure the Hubble constant.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:These notes were originally prepared as additional material for the lessons I have given at the summer school Gamma-ray Astrophysics and Multifrequency: Data analysis and astroparticle problems, organized by the Department of Physics of the University of Perugia (Italy) on July 3-7, 2006. The necessarily limited time of the lessons forced to a drastic selection of the topics and, therefore, I have thought it was useful to complete the slides of the presentation with the notes you find in these few pages. These notes are a kind of ``link'' between the theoretical approach of the University lessons and the practice of the real use. During these years, I have seen that this material is useful for students that are beginning their thesis on research topics based on the use and the interpretation of data from X- and gamma-ray satellites. Therefore, I have thought to update the content of these notes, to translate them into English and to post on arXiv, in order to make them available to a larger public, hoping to give a useful help to other beginners. Since the public is basically composed of graduating students, I have assumed a well-grounded knowledge of basic astrophysics, the principles of instrumentation for physical sciences and the statistical analysis. Therefore, I have focused my notes on the practical issues and given some bibliographic references, just some advice, just to draw the attention on some points that are too much detailed for a university lesson. Nevertheless, the bibliography should be also a good starting point for those who want to further explore these topics.
