Abstract:Identifying an appropriate set of ``observables'' is a nontrivial task for most approaches to quantum gravity. We describe how it may be accomplished in the context of a recently proposed family of stochastic (but classical) dynamical laws for causal sets. The underlying idea should work equally well in the quantum case.

Abstract:After a review of the existing theory of non-inertial frames and mathematical observers in Minkowski space-time we give the explicit expression of a family of such frames obtained from the inertial ones by means of point-dependent Lorentz transformations as suggested by the locality principle. These non-inertial frames have non-Euclidean 3-spaces and contain the differentially rotating ones in Euclidean 3-spaces as a subcase. Then we discuss how to replace mathematical accelerated observers with dynamical ones (their world-lines belong to interacting particles in an isolated system) and how to define Unruh–DeWitt detectors without using mathematical Rindler uniformly accelerated observers. Also some comments are done on the transition from relativistic classical mechanics to relativistic quantum mechanics in non-inertial frames.

Abstract:We examine relativistic diffusion through the frame and observer bundles associated with a Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$. Our focus is on spacetimes with a non-trivial isometry group, and we detail the conditions required to find symmetric solutions of the relativistic diffusion equation. Additionally, we analyze the conservation laws associated with the presence of Killing vector fields on $(M,g)$ and their implications for the expressions of the geodesic spray and the vertical Laplacian on both the frame and the observer bundles. Finally, we present several relevant examples of symmetric spacetimes.

Abstract:Observables in quantum gravity are famously defined asymptotically, at the boundary of AdS or Minkowski spaces. However, by gauge fixing a coordinate system or suitably dressing the field operators, an approximate, "quasi-local" approach is also possible, that can give account of the measurements performed by a set of observers living inside the spacetime. In particular, one can attach spatial coordinates to the worldlines of these observers and use their proper times as a time coordinate. Here we highlight that any such local formulation has to face the relativity of the event , in that changing frame (= set of observers) implies a reshuffling of the point-events and the way they are identified. As a consequence, coordinate transformations between different frames become probabilistic in quantum gravity. We give a concrete realization of this mechanism in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, where a point in the bulk can be defined operationally with geodesics anchored to the boundary. We describe different ways to do so, each corresponding to a different frame , and compute the variances of the transformations relating some of these frames. In particular, we compute the variance of the location of the black hole horizon, which appears smeared in most frames. We then suggest how to calculate this effect in Einstein gravity, assuming knowledge of the wavefunction of the metric. The idea is to expand the latter on a basis of semiclassical states. Each element of this basis enjoys standard/deterministic coordinate transformations and the result is thus obtained by superposition. As a divertissement , we sabotage Lorentz boosts by adding to Minkoswki space a quantum superposition of gravitational waves and compute the probabilistic coordinate transformation to a boosted frame at linear order. Finally, we attempt to translate the relativity of the event into the language of dressed operators.

Abstract:Standard general coordinate invariance for the volume element is extended to general coordinate transformations that have a negative jacobian. This is possible by introducing a non Riemannian Measure of integration, which transforms according to the jacobian of the coordinate transformation, not the absolute value of the jacobian of the coordinate transformation as it is the case with $\sqrt{-g}$. For some signed general transformations a change of boundary conditions is involved in GR and restoring the original limits of integrations can restore symmetry of the action. The discussion totally changes when a non Riemannian Measure of integration is introduced, in the case of signed general coordinate transformations, and even when we have, boundaries, since the modified measure is constructed out of scalar fields becomes also the integration manifold, Since the measure fields that define the non metric measure are scalars. if a signed general coordinate transformations is considered, there is no change in the measure fields, indicating strict invariance of both lagrangian density and integration manifold, implying boundary terms for manifolds with boundaries in coordinate space to be irrelevant . This analysis can be applied to give a framework where to certain interesting scenarios . We consistently formulate the non Riemannian measure theory extension of General Relativity, that could be related to Linde Universe Multiplication model, although there are some fundamental differences. The assumption of a coordinate independent measure of integration appears also useful in the study of Baby Universe Creation. The formulation provides also a new natural way to address the problem of time in Quantum Cosmology, a proposal for a quantum space time and identification of space times and anti space times states in the gravitational theory.

A perturbative approach to Dirac observables and their space-time algebra

Abstract:We introduce a general approximation scheme in order to calculate gauge invariant observables in the canonical formulation of general relativity. Using this scheme we will show how the observables and the dynamics of field theories on a fixed background or equivalently the observables of the linearized theory can be understood as an approximation to the observables in full general relativity. Gauge invariant corrections can be calculated up to an arbitrary high order and we will explicitly calculate the first non--trivial correction. Furthermore we will make a first investigation into the Poisson algebra between observables corresponding to fields at different space--time points and consider the locality properties of the observables.

Spacetime geometry from canonical spherical gravity

Abstract:We study covariant models for vacuum spherical gravity within a canonical setting. Starting from a general ansatz, we derive the most general family of Hamiltonian constraints that are quadratic in first-order and linear in second-order spatial derivatives of the triad variables, and obey certain specific covariance conditions. These conditions ensure that the dynamics generated by such family univocally defines a spacetime geometry, independently of gauge or coordinates choices. This analysis generalizes the Hamiltonian constraint of general relativity, though keeping intact the covariance of the theory, and leads to a rich variety of new geometries. We find that the resulting geometries depend on seven free functions of one scalar variable, and we study their generic features. By construction, there are no propagating degrees of freedom in the theory. However, we also show that it is possible to add matter to the system by simply following the usual minimal-coupling prescription, which leads to novel models to describe dynamical scenarios.

Abstract:To incorporate quantum nonlocality into general relativity, we propose that the preparation and measurement of a quantum system are simultaneous events. To make progress in realizing this proposal, we introduce a spacetime geometry that is endowed with particles which have no distinct points in their worldlines; we call these particles 'pointons'. This new geometry recently arose in nonnoetherian algebraic geometry. We show that on such a spacetime, metrics are degenerate and tangent spaces have variable dimension. This variability then implies that pointons are spin-$\tfrac 12$ fermions that satisfy the Born rule, where a projective measurement of spin corresponds to an actual projection of tangent spaces of different dimensions. Furthermore, the $4$-velocities of pointons are necessarily replaced by their Hodge duals, and this transfer from vector to pseudo-tensor introduces a free choice of orientation that we identify with electric charge. Finally, a simple composite model of electrons and photons results from the metric degeneracy, and from this we obtain a new ontological model of photon polarization.

Synge's World function and the quantum spacetime

Abstract:All our observations that characterise space and time are expressed in terms of non-local, bi-tensorial objects such as geodesic intervals between events and two-point (Green) functions. In this contribution, I highlight the importance of characterising spacetime geometry in terms of such non-local objects, focusing particularly on two important bi-tensors that play a particular fundamental role -- Synge's World function and the van Vleck determinant. I will first discuss how these bi-tensors help capture information about spacetime geometry, and then describe their role in characterising quantum spacetime endowed with a lower bound, say $\ell_0$, on spacetime intervals. Incorporating such a length scale in a Lorentz covariant manner necessitates a description of spacetime geometry in terms of above bi-tensors, and naturally replaces the conventional description based on the metric tensor $g_{ab}(x)$ with a description in terms of a non-local bi-tensor $q_{ab}(x, y)$. The non-analytic structure of $q_{ab}(x, y)$ which renders a perturbative expansion in $\ell_0$ meaningless, also generically leaves a non-trivial ``relic" in the limit $\ell_0 \to 0$. I present some results where such a relic term is manifest; specifically, I will discuss how this: (i) suggests a description of gravitational dynamics different from the one based on Einstein-Hilbert lagrangian, (ii) implies dimensional reduction to $2$ at small scales, (iii) connects with the notion of cosmological constant itself being a non-local vestige of the small scale structure of spacetime, (iv) helps address the issues of spacetime singularities. I will conclude by discussing the ramifications of these ideas for quantum gravity.

The programs of the Extended Relativity in C-spaces: towards the physical foundations of String Theory

Abstract:An outline is presented of the Extended Scale Relativity (ESR) in C-spaces (Clifford manifolds), where the speed of light and the minimum Planck scale are the two universal invariants. This represents in a sense an extension of the theory developed by L. Nottale long ago. It is shown how all the dimensions of a C-space can be treated on equal footing by implementing the holographic principle associated with a nested family of p-loops of various dimensionalities. This is achieved by using poly-vector valued coordinates in C-spaces that encode in one stroke points, lines, areas, volumes,... In addition, we review the derivation of the minimal-length string uncertainty relations; the logarithmic corrections (valid in any dimension) to the black hole area-entropy relation. We also show how the higher derivative gravity with torsion and the recent results of kappa-deformed Poincare theories of gravity follow naturally from the geometry of C-spaces. In conclusion some comments are made on the cosmological implications of this theory with respect to the cosmological constant problem, the two modes of time, the expansion of the universe, number four as the average dimension of our world and a variable fine structure constant.

Abstract:These are the author's lectures at the 1992 Les Houches Summer School, "Gravitation and Quantizations". They develop a generalized sum-over-histories quantum mechanics for quantum cosmology that does not require either a preferred notion of time or a definition of measurement. The "post-Everett" quantum mechanics of closed systems is reviewed. Generalized quantum theories are defined by three elements (1) the set of fine-grained histories of the closed system which are its most refined possible description, (2) the allowed coarse grainings which are partitions of the fine-grained histories into classes, and (3) a decoherence functional which measures interference between coarse grained histories. Probabilities are assigned to sets of alternative coarse-grained histories that decohere as a consequence of the closed system's dynamics and initial condition. Generalized sum-over histories quantum theories are constructed for non-relativistic quantum mechanics, abelian gauge theories, a single relativistic world line, and for general relativity. For relativity the fine-grained histories are four-metrics and matter fields. Coarse grainings are four-dimensional diffeomorphism invariant partitions of these. The decoherence function is expressed in sum-over-histories form. The quantum mechanics of spacetime is thus expressed in fully spacetime form. The coarse-grainings are most general notion of alternative for quantum theory expressible in spacetime terms. Hamiltonian quantum mechanics of matter fields with its notion of unitarily evolving state on a spacelike surface is recovered as an approximation to this generalized quantum mechanics appropriate for those initial conditions and coarse-grainings such that spacetime geometry

Abstract:The aim of this contribution is twofold. First, we show that when two (or more) different quantum groups share the same noncommutative spacetime, such an 'ambiguity' can be resolved by considering together their corresponding noncommutative spaces of geodesics. In any case, the latter play a mathematical/physical role by themselves and, in some cases, they can be interpreted as deformed phase spaces. Second, we explicitly show that noncommutative spacetimes can be reproduced from 'extended' noncommutative spaces of geodesics which are those enlarged by the time translation generator. These general ideas are described in detail for the $\kappa$-Poincaré and $\kappa$-Galilei algebras.

Abstract:Since Einstein's equations $G_{ik} = 8\pi \, G \, T_{ik} \, / c^4 $ relate the metric $g_{ik}$ of spacetime to the energy-momentum tensor $T_{ik}$ which is a quantum field, the metric $g_{ik}$ must be a quantum field. And since the metric $g_{ik}(x)$ is the dot product $g_{ik}(x) = \partial_i p^\alpha(x) \, \partial_k p_\alpha(x)$ of the derivatives of the points $p(x)$ of spacetime, spacetime itself must be a quantum field. Its points have average values $\langle p(x) \rangle$ that obey general relativity and fluctuations $q(x) = p(x) - \langle p(x) \rangle$ that when averaged turn Fourier exponentials $\exp(ikq)$ into gaussians $\exp(-\ell^2 \boldsymbol k^2)$. The gaussians make Feynman diagrams finite. Zero-point are also finite, but they are negative and too large to explain dark energy unless new bosonic fields are included.

Abstract:Quantum reference frames have attracted renewed interest recently, as their exploration is relevant and instructive in many areas of quantum theory. Among the different types, position and time reference frames have captivated special attention. Here, we introduce and analyze a nonrelativistic framework in which each system contains an internal clock, in addition to its external (spatial) degree of freedom and, hence, can be used as a spatiotemporal quantum reference frame. We present expressions for expectation values and variances of relevant observables in different perspectives, as well as relations between these quantities in different perspectives in scenarios with no interactions. In particular, we show that even in these simple scenarios, the relative uncertainty between clocks affects the relative spatial spread of the systems.

Navigation of Spacetime Ships in Unified Gravitational and Electromagnetic Waves

Abstract:On the basis of a "local" principle of equivalence of general relativity, we consider a navigation in a kind of "4D-ocean" involving measurements of conformally invariant physical properties only. Then, applying the Pfaff theory for PDE to a particular conformally equivariant system of differential equations, we show the dependency of any kind of function describing "spacetime waves", with respect to 20 parametrizing functions. These latter, appearing in a linear differential Spencer sequence and determining gauge fields of deformations relatively to "ship-metrics" or to "flat spacetime ocean metrics", may be ascribed to unified electromagnetic and gravitational waves. The present model is based neither on a classical gauge theory of gravitation or a gravitation theory with torsion, nor on any Kaluza-Klein or Weyl type unifications, but rather on a post-Newtonian approach of gravitation in a four dimensional conformal Cosserat spacetime.
