Abstract:I explain in what sense the structure of space and time is probably vague or indefinite, a notion I define. This leads to the mathematical representation of location in space and time by a vague interval. From this, a principle of complementary inaccuracy between spatial location and velocity is derived, and its relation to the Uncertainty Principle discussed. In addition, even if the laws of nature are deterministic, the behaviour of systems will be random to some degree. These and other considerations draw classical physics closer to Quantum Mechanics. An arrow of entropy is also derived, given an arrow of time. Lastly, chaos is given an additional, objective meaning.

Abstract:The time energy uncertainty relation has been a controversial issue since the advent of quantum theory, with respect to appropriate formalisation, validity and possible meanings. A comprehensive account of the development of this subject up to the 1980s is provided by a combination of the reviews of Jammer (1974), Bauer and Mello (1978), and Busch (1990). More recent reviews are concerned with different specific aspects of the subject. The purpose of this chapter is to show that different types of time energy uncertainty relation can indeed be deduced in specific contexts, but that there is no unique universal relation that could stand on equal footing with the position-momentum uncertainty relation. To this end, we will survey the various formulations of a time energy uncertainty relation, with a brief assessment of their validity, and along the way we will indicate some new developments that emerged since the 1990s.

Abstract:The time-energy uncertainty relation in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics has been intensely debated with regard to its formal derivation, validity, and physical meaning. Here, we analyze two formal relations proposed by Mandelstam and Tamm and by Margolus and Levitin and evaluate their validity using a minimal quantum toy model composed of a single qubit inside an external magnetic field. We show that the $\ell_1$ norm of energy coherence $\mathcal{C}$ is invariant with respect to the unitary evolution of the quantum state. Thus, the $\ell_1$ norm of energy coherence $\mathcal{C}$ of an initial quantum state is useful for the classification of the ability of quantum observables to change in time or the ability of the quantum state to evolve into an orthogonal state. In the single-qubit toy model, for quantum states with the submaximal $\ell_1$ norm of energy coherence, $\mathcal{C}<1$, the Mandelstam-Tamm and Margolus-Levitin relations generate instances of infinite "time uncertainty" that is devoid of physical meaning. Only for quantum states with the maximal $\ell_1$ norm of energy coherence, $\mathcal{C}=1$, the Mandelstam-Tamm and Margolus-Levitin relations avoid infinite "time uncertainty", but they both reduce to a strict equality that expresses the Einstein-Planck relation between energy and frequency. The presented results elucidate the fact that the time in the Schrödinger equation is a scalar variable that commutes with the quantum Hamiltonian and is not subject to statistical variance.

Abstract:Heisenberg's uncertainty relation means that one observer cannot know an exact position and velocity for another (finite mass) observer. By contrast, the Poincare transformation of classical special relativity assumes that one observer knows the other's position and velocity exactly. The present paper describes a simple-minded way to consider the issue using a semiclassical discussion of spacetime diagrams, and draws out some possible implications. Uncertainties arise in transformations. A consideration is raised regarding the use of light-cone coordinates.

Abstract:Some of the possible consequences of a generalized uncertainty principle (which emerges in the context of string theory and quantum gravity models as a consequence of fluctuations of the background metric) are analyzed considering the case of a quantum particle immersed in a homogeneous gravitational field. It will be shown that the expectation value of the momentum operator depends in a novel way on the mass of the involved particle. This kind of physical characteristics could be, in principle, detected. In other words, one way of confronting against the experiment some of the models around quantum gravity is given by the detection of the dependence upon the mass parameter of the expectation value of the momentum operator.

Abstract:The Dirac equation, in the field of a traveling circularly polarized electromagnetic wave and a constant magnetic field, has singular solutions, corresponding the expansion of energy in vicinity of some singular point. These solutions described relativistic fermions. States relating to these solutions are not stationary. The temporal change of average energy, momentum and spin for single and mixed states is studied in the paper. A distinctive feature of the states is the disappearance of the longitudinal component of the average spin. Another feature is the equivalence of the condition of fermion minimal energy and the classical condition of the magnetic resonance. Finding such solutions assumes the use of a transformation for rotating and co-moving frames of references. Comparison studies of solutions obtained with the Galilean and non-Galilean transformation shown that some parameters of the non-Galilean transformation may be measured in high-energy physics.

Abstract:The dynamics of particles with intrinsic angular momentum (spin) described by the Dirac equation is considered in a homogeneous space with rotation in the presence of a homogeneous vortex gravitational field. The effects of the interaction between the spin of Dirac particles and the vortex gravitational field, as well as a possible mechanism for the appearance of an inertial mass, which is inextricably linked, as shown, with the spin of particles, are revealed. A geometric interpretation of the uncertainty principle is given.

Abstract:Since Einstein's equations $G_{ik} = 8\pi \, G \, T_{ik} \, / c^4 $ relate the metric $g_{ik}$ of spacetime to the energy-momentum tensor $T_{ik}$ which is a quantum field, the metric $g_{ik}$ must be a quantum field. And since the metric $g_{ik}(x)$ is the dot product $g_{ik}(x) = \partial_i p^\alpha(x) \, \partial_k p_\alpha(x)$ of the derivatives of the points $p(x)$ of spacetime, spacetime itself must be a quantum field. Its points have average values $\langle p(x) \rangle$ that obey general relativity and fluctuations $q(x) = p(x) - \langle p(x) \rangle$ that when averaged turn Fourier exponentials $\exp(ikq)$ into gaussians $\exp(-\ell^2 \boldsymbol k^2)$. The gaussians make Feynman diagrams finite. Zero-point are also finite, but they are negative and too large to explain dark energy unless new bosonic fields are included.

Abstract:The theoretical connections between quantum trajectories and quantum dwell times, previously explored in the context of 1D time-independent stationary scattering applications, are here generalized for multidimensional time-dependent wavepacket applications for particles with spin 1/2. In addition to dwell times, trajectory-based dwell time distributions are also developed, and compared with previous distributions based on the dwell time operator and the flux–flux correlation function. Dwell time distributions are of interest, in part because they may be of experimental relevance. In addition to standard unipolar quantum trajectories, bipolar quantum trajectories are also considered, and found to relate more directly to the dwell time (and other quantum time) quantities of greatest relevance for scattering applications. Detailed calculations are performed for a benchmark 3D spin-1/2 particle application, considered previously in the context of computing quantum arrival times.

Abstract:A generalized framework is developed which uses a set description instead of wavefunction to emphasize the role of the observer. Such a framework is found to be very effective in the study of the measurement problem and time's arrow. Measurement in classical and quantum theory is given a unified treatment. With the introduction of the concept of uncertainty quantum which is the basic unit of measurement, we show that the time's arrow within the uncertainty quantum is just opposite to the time's arrow in the observable reality. A special constant is discussed which explains our sensation of time and provides a permanent substrate for all change. It is shown that the whole spacetime connects together in a delicate structure.

Abstract:Heisenberg guessed, after he established the matrix quantum mechanics, that the non-commutativity of the matrices of position and momentum implied that the position and momentum of a particle could not be precisely simultaneously determined. He consequently conjectured that time and energy should also have a similar relationship. Soon after, Robertson derived an inequality concerning the space coordinate and momentum, which was thought to be the mathematical expression of the uncertainty relation guessed by Heisenberg. Since then, people have tried various devices to prove the correctness of these two relations. However, no one conducted a careful analysis of Heisenberg's primary paper. In this work, we point out some serious problems in Heisenberg's paper and the literature talking about the uncertainty relationships: the physical concepts involved in the uncertainty relations are not clear; one physical concept had more than one explanation, i.e., switching concepts; there has never been measurement experiment to support the relations. The conclusions are that the so-called coordinate–momentum uncertainty relation has never been related to actual measurement and there does not exist a time–energy uncertainty relation.

Abstract:Effects of a Bohmian type quantum-relativistic theory are explored. The model is obtained by introducing a new and independent time parameter whose relative motions are not directly observable and cause the quantum uncertainties of the physical observables. Unlike the usual de Broglie-Bohm theories, the Quantum Potential does not affect directly the observable motion but it determines that one relative to the new time variable. It turns out that the Zitterbewegung of a free particle, of which a more general law is obtained, is the key example of these hidden motions and, through it, it seems possible to give physical reality to the Feynman's paths. A relativistic revision of the uncertainty principle also derives from the theory.

Abstract:Heisenberg's uncertainty principle in application to energy and time is a powerful heuristics. This statement plays the important role in foundations of quantum theory and statistical physics. If some state exists for a finite interval of time, then it cannot have a completely definite value of energy. It is well known that the case of energy and time principally differs from more familiar examples of two non-commuting observables. Since quantum theory was originating, many approaches to energy-time uncertainties have been proposed. Entropic way to formulate the uncertainty principle is currently the subject of active researches. Using the Pegg concept of complementarity of the Hamiltonian, we obtain uncertainty relations of the "energy-time" type in terms of the Rényi and Tsallis entropies. Although this concept is somehow restricted in scope, derived relations can be applied to systems typically used in quantum information processing. Both the state-dependent and state-independent formulations are of interest. Some of the derived state-independent bounds are similar to the results obtained within a more general approach on the basis of sandwiched relative entropies. The developed method allows us to address the case of detection inefficiencies.

Abstract:A literature review of related articles, either by affinity or by contrast, to a fundamental theory of time and space - time previously developed. It shows how from a primitive concept of preparticle and membership relation of set theory, and four postulates that refer to simple concepts, derived concepts of time, space-time, reference frame, particle, fields, and interaction between fields are obtained. The problem of the "direction " of time is analyzed and a paradox whose solution goes against the idea that this direction is fixed by the increase of entropy prescribed by the second law of thermodynamics is examined. In our theory this direction is unique to each reference frame, and is an intrinsic property of time. Two kinds of particles are described as derived concepts, and it is shown that one of them fullfills the Bose-Einstein statistics, and the other one fullfills the Fermi-Dirac statistics. We also consider the analysis of the wave function concepts and particle detector as concepts derived from the mentioned theory. Using these concepts, the process of locating both a macroscopic body (typical location) as well as one of a microscopic scale (quantum localization) is analyzed, and the significance of the location is examined in both cases.

Abstract:This is an elementary, self-contained review of some peculiarities of quantum mechanics for 2+1 dimensional systems that are at least instructive and perhaps important. In particular, we argue that angular momentum need not be quantized and that statistics interpolating between Fermi and Bose statistics can be constructed. There are possible direct applications to collective excitations in solids and to cosmic strings, and an important moral lesson regarding the “wave function of the universe.”

Abstract:The uncertainty principle is one of the characteristic properties of quantum theory, where it signals the incompatibility of two types of measurements. In this paper, we argue that measurements of time-of-arrival $T_x$ at position $x$ and position $X_t$ at time $t$ are mutually exclusive for a quantum system, each providing complementary information about the state of that system. For a quantum particle of mass $m$ falling in a uniform gravitational field $g$, we show that the corresponding uncertainty relation can be expressed as $\Delta T_x \Delta X_t \geq \frac{\hbar}{2mg}$. This uncertainty relationship can be taken as evidence of the presence of a form of epistemic incompatibility in the sense that preparing the initial state of the system so as to decrease the measured position uncertainty will lead to an increase in the measured time-of-arrival uncertainty. These findings can be empirically tested in the context of ongoing or forthcoming experiments on measurements of time-of-arrival for free-falling quantum particles.
