Abstract:This document gathers the notes of a 30-hour review course on gravitation, which I delivered in January 2018 and January 2019 at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences of Cameroon (AIMS-Cameroon). Its main goal is to propose a big picture of gravitation, where Einstein's relativity arises as a natural increment to Newton's theory. It is designed for bachelor/master students who do not necessarily have prior knowledge about relativity. The students are nevertheless expected to be familiar with the fundamentals of Newton's mechanics and gravitation, for the first chapter to be a mere reformulation of known concepts. The second chapter then introduces special and general relativity at the same time, while the third chapter explores concrete manifestations of relativistic gravitation, notably gravitational waves and black holes. Each section corresponds, on average, to slightly more than a 2-hour black-board lecture. The numerous exercises must be considered part of the course itself; they are intended to stimulate active reading.

Abstract:Formulating a quantum theory of gravity lies at the heart of fundamental theoretical physics. This collection of lecture notes encompasses a selection of topics that were covered in six mini-courses at the Nordita PhD school "Towards Quantum Gravity". The scope was to provide a coherent picture, from its foundation to forefront research, emphasizing connections between different areas. The lectures begin with perturbative quantum gravity and effective field theory. Subsequently, two ultraviolet-complete approaches are presented: asymptotically safe gravity and string theory. Finally, elements of quantum effects in black hole spacetimes are discussed.

Abstract:These notes are self-contained, with the first 7 chapters used in a one-semester course with recommended texts by Wald, by Misner, Thorne and Wheeler, and by Schutz. In its treatment of topics covered in these standard texts, the presentation here typically includes steps skipped in Wald or MTW. Treatments of gravitational waves, particle orbits in black-hole backgrounds, the Teukolsky equation, and the initial value equations are motivated in part by the discoveries of gravitational waves from the inspiral and coalescence of binary black holes and neutron stars, advances in numerical relativity, and the expected LISA space-based observatory. The notes begin with a detailed presentation of special relativity with a geometrical orientation, starting with with time dilation and length contraction and including relativistic particles, fluids, electromagnetism, and curvilinear coordinates. Chaps. 2-5 cover curvature, the Einstein equation, relativistic stars, and black holes. Chap. 6, on gravitational waves, includes a discussion of detection and noise. Chap. 7 is a brief introduction to cosmology, deriving the metrics of homogeneous isotropic space, the equations governing a universe with matter, radiation and vacuum energy, and their solutions, and discussions of the cosmological redshift and on using gravitational waves to measure the Hubble constant.

Abstract:These lecture notes collect the material that I have been using over the years for various short courses on the physics of gravitational waves, first at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (France), and then at SISSA (Italy) and various summer/winter schools. The level should be appropriate for PhD students in physics or for MSc students that have taken a first course in general relativity. The focus is on deriving results from first principles, rather than on astrophysical applications.

Abstract:A parasystole from a heart-transplant patient is analysed using a beat-to-beat RR interval time series obtained from an electrocardiogram (ECG). The dysrhythmia, resulting from the co-existence of two pacemakers, the sinus node and an ectopic focus, presents distinctive regular patterns, with transitions from one pattern to another occurring abruptly. It is shown that the parasystolic rhythm can be simulated by a model involving two oscillators firing at fixed rates, under the restriction that neither is allowed to fire during the other's refractory period. It is found that the structure of the generated RR time series is essentially determined by the ratio of the period of the two oscillators. In the case of a heart-transplant patient with a small heart-rate variability as a result of heart denervation, the model predicts the RR intervals with an error of less than 6% for an 80-beat sequence. From a physiological point of view, the results imply that the interaction between the two pacemakers in the heart is fairly weak, and hence the parasystole observed in the heart-transplant patient can be modelled as a pure parasystole.

Abstract:This text arises from teaching advanced undergraduate courses in differential topology for the master curriculum in Mathematics at the University of Pisa. So it is mainly addressed to motivated and collaborative master undergraduate students, having nevertheless a limited mathematical background. Overall this text is a collection of themes, in some cases advanced and of historical importance, with the common feature that they can be treated with "bare hands". Abstract:This lecture consists of two parts. The first is a (totally unsystematic) survey of some of the high points in the evolution of gravity and its successors, primarily in the course of the past century. The second summarizes some new work on surprising properties of higher $(> 1)$ spin fields in cosmological backgrounds: the presence of $Ł$ gives rise to discrete sets of massive models endowed with gauge invariances, that divide the ($m^2, Ł$) plane into unitary and non-unitary phases. The unitary region common to fermions and bosons shrinks to flat space ($ Ł\to 0 $) as their spins increase.

Abstract:The interplay between structure-search of the native structure and desolvation in protein folding has been explored using a minimalist model. These results support a folding mechanism where most of the structural formation of the protein is achieved before water is expelled from the hydrophobic core. This view integrates water expulsion effects into the funnel energy landscape theory of protein folding. Comparisons to experimental results are shown for the SH3 protein. After the folding transition, a near-native intermediate with partially solvated hydrophobic core is found. This transition is followed by a final step that cooperatively squeezes out water molecules from the partially hydrated protein core.
