Abstract:Possible models of modified gravity are being extensively studied now, with most phenomenological motivations coming from puzzles and tensions in cosmology due to a natural desire to better fit the known and newly coming data. At the same time, available experimental evidence is limited for testing gravity as a force beyond the regimes in which the theory of general relativity has proven to be successful. This situation leads researchers to look for “the simplest modification” to general relativity in a certain class of models, which is enough to solve one or more problems. As a result, we are lost amid a variety of theories with no deeper guiding principle. We give a general review of existing approaches and discuss the current state of the art.

Abstract:In this review we present a thoroughly comprehensive survey of recent work on modified theories of gravity and their cosmological consequences. Amongst other things, we cover General Relativity, scalar–tensor, Einstein–æther, and Bimetric theories, as well as TeVeS, f(R), general higher-order theories, Hořava–Lifschitz gravity, Galileons, Ghost Condensates, and models of extra dimensions including Kaluza–Klein, Randall–Sundrum, DGP, and higher co-dimension braneworlds. We also review attempts to construct a Parameterised Post-Friedmannian formalism, that can be used to constrain deviations from General Relativity in cosmology, and that is suitable for comparison with data on the largest scales. These subjects have been intensively studied over the past decade, largely motivated by rapid progress in the field of observational cosmology that now allows, for the first time, precision tests of fundamental physics on the scale of the observable Universe. The purpose of this review is to provide a reference tool for researchers and students in cosmology and gravitational physics, as well as a self-contained, comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the subject as a whole.
A Unified Approach to Geometric Modifications of Gravity

Abstract:This thesis studies modified theories of gravity from a geometric viewpoint. We review the motivations for considering alternatives to General Relativity and cover the mathematical foundations of gravitational theories in Riemannian and non-Riemannian geometries. Then, starting from the decomposition of the Einstein-Hilbert action into bulk and boundary terms, we construct new modifications of General Relativity. These modifications break diffeomorphism invariance or local Lorentz invariance, allowing one to bypass Lovelock's theorem while remaining second-order and without introducing additional fields. In the metric-affine framework, we introduce a new Einstein-Cartan-type theory with propagating torsion. Important comparisons are made with the modified teleparallel theories, and we construct a unified framework encompassing all these theories. The equivalence between theories that break fundamental symmetries in the Riemannian setting and non-Riemannian theories of gravity is explored in detail. This leads to a dual interpretation of teleparallel gravity, one in terms of geometric quantities and the other in terms of non-covariant objects. We then study the cosmological applications of these modified theories, making use of dynamical systems techniques. One key result is that the modified Einstein-Cartan theories can drive inflation in the early universe, replacing the initial cosmological singularity of General Relativity. To conclude, we discuss the viability of these modifications and possible future directions, examining their significance and relevance to the broader field of gravitational physics.

Modified gravity: a unified approach to metric-affine models

Abstract:The starting point of this work is the original Einstein action, sometimes called the Gamma squared action. Continuing from our previous results, we study various modified theories of gravity following the Palatini approach. The metric and the connection will be treated as independent variables leading to generalised theories which may contain torsion or non-metricity or both. Due to our particular approach involving the Einstein action, our setup allows us to formulate a substantial number of new theories not previously studied. Our results can be linked back to well-known models like Einstein-Cartan theory and metric-affine theories and also links to many recently studied modified gravity models. In particular we propose an Einstein-Cartan type modified theory of gravity which contains propagating torsion provided our function depends non-linearly on a boundary term. We also can state precise conditions for the existence of propagating torsion. Our work concludes with a brief discussion of cosmology and the role of cosmological torsion in our model. We find solutions with early-time inflation and late-time matter dominated behaviour. No matter sources are required to drive inflation and it becomes a purely geometrical effect.

Abstract:We investigate f ( R )-gravity models performing the ADM-slicing of standard General Relativity. We extract the static, spherically-symmetric vacuum solutions in the general case, which correspond to either Schwarzschild de-Sitter or Schwarzschild anti-de-Sitter ones. Additionally, we study the cosmological evolution of a homogeneous and isotropic universe, which is governed by an algebraic and not a differential equation. We show that the universe admits solutions corresponding to acceleration at late cosmological epochs, without the need of fine-tuning the model-parameters or the initial conditions.

Abstract:A seminar given about 30 years ago by Ruben Aldrovandi motivates this text where some reflexions about constructing theories that modify General Relativity are made. Two particular cases, the Brans-Dicke and Unimodular Gravity ones, are discussed, in a quite qualitative way, showing on how they can address some of the most outstanding problems of General Relativity, specially the transplanckian physics and the cosmological constant problem.

Abstract:We consider metric-affine scenarios where a modified gravitational action is sourced by electrovacuum fields in a three dimensional space-time. We first study the case of f(R) theories, finding deviations near the center as compared to the solutions of general relativity. We then consider Born-Infeld gravity, which has raised a lot of interest in the last few years regarding its applications in astrophysics and cosmology, and show that new features always arise at a finite distance from the center. Several properties of the resulting space-times, in particular in presence of a cosmological constant term, are discussed.

Abstract:A new class of modified gravity theories, made possible by subtle features of the canonical formulation of general covariance, naturally allows MOND-like behavior (MOdified Newtonian Dynamics) in effective space-time solutions without introducing new fields. A detailed analysis reveals a relationship with various quantum-gravity features, in particular in canonical approaches, and shows several properties of potential observational relevance. A fundamental origin of MOND and a corresponding solution to the dark-matter problem are therefore possible and testable.

Abstract:We discuss the standard Lane-Emden formalism as well as the one related to the slowly rotating objects. It is preceded by a brief introduction of different forms of the polytropic equation of state. This allows to study a wide class of astrophysical objects in the framework of a given theory of gravity, as demonstrated in a few examples. We will discuss light elements burning processes and cooling models in stars and substellar objects with the use of the Lane-Emden formalism.

Abstract:We systematically review some standard issues and also the latest developments of modified gravity in cosmology, emphasizing on inflation, bouncing cosmology and late-time acceleration era. Particularly, we present the formalism of standard modified gravity theory representatives, like F ( R ) , F ( G ) and F ( T ) gravity theories, but also several alternative theoretical proposals which appeared in the literature during the last decade. We emphasize on the formalism developed for these theories and we explain how these theories can be considered as viable descriptions for our Universe. Using these theories, we present how a viable inflationary era can be produced in the context of these theories, with the viability being justified if compatibility with the latest observational data is achieved. Also we demonstrate how bouncing cosmologies can actually be described by these theories. Moreover, we systematically discuss several qualitative features of the dark energy era by using the modified gravity formalism, and also we critically discuss how a unified description of inflation with dark energy era can be described by solely using the modified gravity framework. Finally, we also discuss some astrophysical solutions in the context of modified gravity, and several qualitative features of these solutions. The aim of this review is to gather the different modified gravity techniques and form a virtual modified gravity “toolbox”, which will contain all the necessary information on inflation, dark energy and bouncing cosmologies in the context of the various forms of modified gravity.

Abstract:Motivated by Horava-Lifshitz gravity theory, we propose and investigate two kinds of modified gravity theories, the f(R) kind and the K-essence kind, in the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. The f(R) kind includes one ultraviolet (UV) term and one infrared (IR) term together with the Einstein-Hilbert action. We find that these two terms naturally present the ultraviolet and infrared modifications to the Friedmann equation. The UV and IR modifications can avoid the past Big-Bang singularity and the future Big-Rip singularity, respectively. Furthermore, the IR modification can naturally account for the current acceleration of the Universe. The Lagrangian of K-essence kind modified gravity is made up of the three dimensional Ricci scalar and an arbitrary function of the extrinsic curvature term. We find the cosmic acceleration can also be naturally interpreted without invoking any kind of dark energy. The static, spherically symmetry and vacuum solutions of both theories are Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution. Thus these modified gravity theories are viable for solar system tests.

Modified Gravity and Cosmology with Nonminimal Direct or Derivative Coupling Between Matter and the Einstein Tensor

Abstract:We construct new classes of modified theories in which the matter sector couples with the Einstein tensor, namely we consider direct couplings of the latter to the energy-momentum tensor, and to the derivatives of its trace. We extract the general field equations, which do not contain higher-order derivatives, and we apply them in a cosmological framework, obtaining the Friedmann equations, whose extra terms give rise to an effective dark energy sector. At the background level we show that we can successfully describe the usual thermal history of the universe, with the sequence of matter and dark-energy epochs, while the dark-energy equation-of-state parameter can lie in the phantom regime, tending progressively to -1 at present and future times. Furthermore, we confront the theory with Cosmic Chronometer data, showing that the agreement is very good. Finally, we perform a detailed investigation of scalar and tensor perturbations, and extracting an approximate evolution equation for the matter overdensity we show that the predicted behavior is in agreement with observations.

Abstract:A fundamental ingredient in wormhole physics is the presence of exotic matter, which involves the violation of the null energy condition. Although a plethora of wormhole solutions have been explored in the literature, it is useful to find geometries that minimize the usage of exotic matter. In the context of modified gravity, it has also been shown that the normal matter can be imposed to satisfy the null energy condition, and it is the higher order curvature terms, interpreted as a gravitational fluid, that sustain these non-standard wormhole geometries, fundamentally different from their counterparts in general relativity. In this paper, we review recent work in wormhole physics in the context of modified theories of gravity.

Inflationary dynamics in modified gravity models

Abstract:Higher-order theories of gravity are a branch of modified gravity wherein the geometrodynamics of the four-dimensional Riemannian manifold is determined by field equations involving derivatives of the metric tensor of order higher than two. This paper considers a general action built with the Einstein-Hilbert term plus additional curvature-based invariants, viz. the Starobinsky $R^{2}$-type term, a term scaling with $R^{3}$, and a correction of the type $R\square R$. The focus is on the background inflationary regime accommodated by these three models. For that, the higher-order field equations are built and specified for the FLRW line element. The dynanical analysis in the phase space is carried in each case. This analysis shows that the Starobinsky-plus-$R^{3}$ model keeps the good features exhibited by the pure Starobinsky inflationary model, although the set of initial conditions for the inflaton field $\chi$ leading to a graceful exit scenario is more contrived; the coupling constant $\alpha_{0}$ of the $R^{3}$ invariant is also constrained by the dynamical analysis. The Starobinsky-plus-$R\square R$ model turns out being a double-field inflation model; it consistently enables an almost-exponential primordial acceleration followed by a radiation dominated universe if its coupling $\beta_{0}$ takes values in the interval $0\leq\beta_{0}\leq3/4$. The models introducing higher-order correction to Starobinsky inflation are interesting due to the possibility of a running spectral index $n_{s}$, something that is allowed by current CMB observations.

Abstract:These notes are self-contained, with the first 7 chapters used in a one-semester course with recommended texts by Wald, by Misner, Thorne and Wheeler, and by Schutz. In its treatment of topics covered in these standard texts, the presentation here typically includes steps skipped in Wald or MTW. Treatments of gravitational waves, particle orbits in black-hole backgrounds, the Teukolsky equation, and the initial value equations are motivated in part by the discoveries of gravitational waves from the inspiral and coalescence of binary black holes and neutron stars, advances in numerical relativity, and the expected LISA space-based observatory. The notes begin with a detailed presentation of special relativity with a geometrical orientation, starting with with time dilation and length contraction and including relativistic particles, fluids, electromagnetism, and curvilinear coordinates. Chaps. 2-5 cover curvature, the Einstein equation, relativistic stars, and black holes. Chap. 6, on gravitational waves, includes a discussion of detection and noise. Chap. 7 is a brief introduction to cosmology, deriving the metrics of homogeneous isotropic space, the equations governing a universe with matter, radiation and vacuum energy, and their solutions, and discussions of the cosmological redshift and on using gravitational waves to measure the Hubble constant.

Black Holes and Wormholes Beyond Classical General Relativity

Abstract:In the paper, only Static Spherically Symmetric space-times in four dimensions are considered within modified gravity models. The non-singular static metrics, including black holes not admitting a de Sitter core in the center and traversable wormholes, are reconsidered within a class of higher-order $F(R)$, satisfying the constraints $F(0)=\frac{dF}{dR}(0)=0$. Furthermore, by making use of the so-called effective field theory formulation of gravity, the quantum corrections to Einstein-Hilbert's action due to higher-derivative terms related to curvature invariants are investigated. In particular, in the case of Einstein-Hilbert action plus cubic curvature Goroff-Sagnotti contribution, the second-order correction in the Goroff-Sagnotti coupling constant is computed. In general, it is shown that the effective metrics, namely Schwarzschild expression plus small quantum corrections, are related to black holes and not to traversable wormholes. In this framework, within the approximation considered, the resolution of singularity for $r=0$ is not accomplished. The related properties of these solutions are investigated.

Abstract:Some time ago, it has been suggested that gravitons can acquire mass in the process of spontaneous symmetry breaking of diffeomorphisms through the condensation of scalar fields [Chamseddine and Mukhanov, JHEP, 2010]. Taking this possibility into account, in the present paper, first we show how the graviton mass intricately reshapes the gravitational potential akin to a Yukawa-like potential at large distances. Notably, this long-range force modifies the Newton's law in large distances and might explain the phenomena of dark matter. The most important finding in the present paper is the derivation of a modified Newtons law of gravity by modifying the Verlindes entropic force relation due to the graviton contribution. The graviton contribution to the entropy basically measures the correlation of graviton and matter fields which then reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy at the horizon. This result shows the dual description of gravity: in the language of quantum information and entropy the gravity can be viewed as an entropic force, however in terms of particles and fields, it can be viewed as a longe range force. Further we have recovered the corrected Einstein field equations as well as the $\Lambda$CDM where dark matter emerges as an apparent effect.
