Abstract:Let $N(n)$ denote the number of isomorphism types of groups of order $n$. We consider the integers $n$ that are products of at most $4$ not necessarily distinct primes and exhibit formulas for $N(n)$ for such $n$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group. The subsets $A_1,\ldots,A_k$ of $G$ form a complete factorization of group $G$ if if they are pairwise disjoint and each element $g\in G$ is uniquely represented as $g=a_1\ldots a_k$, with $a_i\in A_i$. We prove the following theorem: Let $G$ be a finite nilpotent group. If $|G|=m_1\ldots m_k$ where $m_1,\ldots,m_k$ are integers greater $1$ and $k\geq3$, then there exist subsets $A_1,\ldots,A_k$ of $G$ which form a complete factorization of group $G$ and $|A_i|=m_i$ for all $i=1,2,\ldots,k$. In addition, we give several examples of building complete factorization for some groups and formulate one open question.

Enumeration modulo 4 of overpartitions wherein only even parts can be overlined

Abstract:In 2014, as part of a larger study of overpartitions with restrictions of the overlined parts based on residue classes, Munagi and Sellers defined $d_2(n)$ as the number of overpartitions of weight $n$ wherein only even parts can be overlined. As part of that work, they used a generating function approach to prove a parity characterization for $d_2(n)$. In this note, we give a combinatorial proof of their result and extend it to a modulus 4 characterization; we provide both generating function and combinatorial proofs of this stronger result. The combinatorial arguments incorporate classical involutions of Franklin, Glaisher, and Sylvester, along with a recent involution of van Leeuwen and methods new with this work.

Abstract:Let $N_1=p_1^{2u_1+1}...p_w^{2u_w+1}$, where the $p_i$ are distinct primes, $u_1,...,u_w$ are nonnegative integers and $w$ is an odd integer, and $N_2$ be a positive integer such that $\gcd(N_1,N_2)=1$. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for the type number, i.e. the number of isomorphism classes, of orders of level $(N_1, N_2)$. The method of proof involves the Siegel-Weil formula for ternary quadratic forms.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and write ${\rm cd}(G)$ for the degree set of the complex irreducible characters of $G$. The group $G$ is said to satisfy the {\it two-prime hypothesis} if, for any distinct degrees $a, b \in {\rm cd}(G)$, the total number of (not necessarily different) primes of the greatest common divisor ${\rm gcd}(a, b)$ is at most $2$. In this paper, we prove an upper bound on the number of irreducible character degrees of a nonsolvable group that has a composition factor isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_2 (q)$ for $q \geq 7$.

Abstract:The number of standard Young tableaux possible of shape corresponding to a partition $\lambda$ is called the dimension of the partition and is denoted by $f^{\lambda}$. Partitions with odd dimensions were enumerated by McKay and were further classified by Macdonald. Let $a_i(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ with dimension congruent to $i$ modulo 4. In this paper, we refine Macdonald's and McKay's results by calculating $a_1(n)$ and $a_3(n)$ when $n$ has no consecutive 1s in its binary expansion or when the sum of binary digits of $n$ is 2 and giving a recursive formula to compute $a_2(n)$ for all $n$.

Abstract:We consider a certain left action by the monoid $SL_2(\mathbf{N}_0)$ on the set of divisor pairs $\mathcal{D}_f := \{ (m, n) \in \mathbf{N}_0 \times \mathbf{N}_0 : m \lvert f(n) \}$ where $f \in \mathbf{Z}[x]$ is a polynomial with integer coefficients. We classify all polynomials in $\mathbf{Z}[x]$ for which this action extends to an invertible map $\hat{F}_f: SL_2(\mathbf{N}_0) \rightarrow \mathcal{D}_f$. We call such polynomials $\textit{enumerable}$. One of these polynomials happens to be $f(n) = n^2 + 1$. Abstract:For a positive integer $N$ divisible by $4$, let $\mathcal{O}^1_N(\mathbb{Q})$ be the ring of weakly holomorphic modular functions for the congruence subgroup $\Gamma^1(N)$ with rational Fourier coefficients. We present explicit generators of the ring $\mathcal{O}^1_N(\mathbb{Q})$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, from which we are able to classify all Fricke families of such level $N$.

Abstract:We prove that there exists a universal constant $D$ such that if $p$ is a prime divisor of the index of the Fitting subgroup of a finite group $G$, then the number of conjugacy classes of G is at least $Dp/log_2 p$. We conjecture that we can take $D=1$ and prove that for solvable groups, we can take $D=1/3$.

Abstract:For all Frobenius groups and a large class of finite multiply transitive permutation groups, we show that the corresponding group-subgroup subfactors are completely characterized by their principal graphs. The class includes all the sharply $k$-transitive permutation groups for $k=2,3,4$, and in particular the Mathieu group $M_{11}$ of degree 11.

Abstract:Let $S(n)$ denote the least primary factor in the primary decomposition of the multiplicative group $M_n = (\Bbb Z/n\Bbb Z)^\times$. We give an asymptotic formula, with order of magnitude $x/(\log x)^{1/2}$, for the counting function of those integers $n$ for which $S(n) \ne 2$. We also give an asymptotic formula, for any prime power $q$, for the counting function of those integers $n$ for which $S(n) = q$. This group-theoretic problem can be reduced to problems of counting integers with restrictions on their prime factors, allowing it to be addressed by classical techniques of analytic number theory.

Abstract:Suppose that $n$ is $0$ or $4$ modulo $6$. We show that there are infinitely many primes of the form $p^2 + nq^2$ with both $p$ and $q$ prime, and obtain an asymptotic for their number. In particular, when $n = 4$ we verify the `Gaussian primes conjecture' of Friedlander and Iwaniec. We study the problem using the method of Type I/II sums in the number field $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. The main innovation is in the treatment of the Type II sums, where we make heavy use of two recent developments in the theory of Gowers norms in additive combinatorics: quantitative versions of so-called concatenation theorems, due to Kuca and to Kuca--Kravitz-Leng, and the quasipolynomial inverse theorem of Leng, Sah and the second author.

Abstract:We show that the number of isomorphism classes of left braces of order~$64$ with additive group isomorphic to $C_2\times C_2\times C_4\times C_4$ is $10\,326\,821$. This completes the classification of left braces of order~$64$, that turn out to fall into $15\,095\,601$ isomorphism classes.
