Abstract:In continuation of \cite{HHOT}, we discuss the question of spectral minimal 3-partitions for the rectangle $]-\frac a2,\frac a2[\times ] -\frac b2,\frac b2[ $, with $0< a\leq b$. It has been observed in \cite{HHOT} that when $0<\frac ab < \sqrt{\frac 38}$ the minimal 3-partition is obtained by the three nodal domains of the third eigenfunction corresponding to the three rectangles $]-\frac a2,\frac a2[\times ] -\frac b2,-\frac b6[$, $]-\frac a2,\frac a2[\times ] -\frac b6,\frac b6[$ and $]-\frac a2,\frac a2[\times ] \frac b6, \frac b2[$. We will describe a possible mechanism of transition for increasing $\frac ab$ between these nodal minimal 3-partitions and non nodal minimal 3-partitions at the value $ \sqrt{\frac 38}$ and discuss the existence of symmetric candidates for giving minimal 3-partitions when $ \sqrt{\frac 38}<\frac ab \leq 1$. Numerical analysis leads very naturally to nice questions of isospectrality which are solved by introducing Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonians or by going on the double covering of the punctured rectangle.

Homology of spectral minimal partitions

Abstract:A spectral minimal partition of a manifold is its decomposition into disjoint open sets that minimizes a spectral energy functional. It is known that bipartite spectral minimal partitions coincide with nodal partitions of Courant-sharp Laplacian eigenfunctions. However, almost all minimal partitions are non-bipartite. To study those, we define a modified Laplacian operator and prove that the nodal partitions of its Courant-sharp eigenfunctions are minimal within a certain topological class of partitions. This yields new results in the non-bipartite case and recovers the above known result in the bipartite case. Our approach is based on tools from algebraic topology, which we illustrate by a number of examples where the topological types of partitions are characterized by relative homology.

Abstract:A spectral minimal partition of a manifold is a decomposition into disjoint open sets that minimizes a spectral energy functional. While it is known that bipartite minimal partitions correspond to nodal partitions of Courant-sharp Laplacian eigenfunctions, the non-bipartite case is much more challenging. In this paper, we unify the bipartite and non-bipartite settings by defining a modified Laplacian operator and proving that the nodal partitions of its eigenfunctions are exactly the critical points of the spectral energy functional. Moreover, we prove that the Morse index of a critical point equals the nodal deficiency of the corresponding eigenfunction. Some striking consequences of our main result are: 1) in the bipartite case, every local minimum of the energy functional is in fact a global minimum; 2) in the non-bipartite case, every local minimum of the energy functional minimizes within a certain topological class of partitions. Our results are valid for partitions with non-smooth boundaries; this introduces considerable technical challenges, which are overcome using delicate approximation arguments in the Sobolev space $H^{1/2}$.

In this paper we discuss a class of spectral partition problems with a measure constraint, for partitions of a given bounded connected open set. We establish the existence of an optimal open partition, showing that the corresponding eigenfunctions are locally Lipschitz continuous, and obtain some qualitative properties for the partition. The proof uses an equivalent weak formulation that involves a minimization problem of a penalized functional where the variables are functions rather than domains, suitable deformations, blowup techniques, and a monotonicity formula.

Abstract:We consider the problem of partitioning a two-dimensional flat torus $T^2$ into $m$ sets in order to minimize the maximal diameter of a part. For $m \leqslant 25$ we give numerical estimates for the maximal diameter $d_m(T^2)$ at which the partition exists. Several approaches are proposed to obtain such estimates. In particular, we use the search for mesh partitions via the SAT solver, the global optimization approach for polygonal partitions, and the optimization of periodic hexagonal tilings. For $m=3$, the exact estimate is proved using elementary topological reasoning.

Spectral estimates for free boundary minimal surfaces via Montiel-Ros partitioning methods

Abstract:We adapt and extend the Montiel-Ros methodology to compact manifolds with boundary, allowing for mixed (including oblique) boundary conditions and also accounting for the action of a finite group $G$ together with an additional twisting homomorphism $\sigma\colon G\to\operatorname O(1)$. We then apply this machinery in order to obtain quantitative lower and upper bounds on the growth rate of the Morse index of free boundary minimal surfaces with respect to the topological data (i. e. the genus and the number of boundary components) of the surfaces in question. In particular, we compute the exact values of the equivariant Morse index and nullity for two infinite families of examples, with respect to their maximal symmetry groups, and thereby derive explicit two-sided linear bounds when the equivariance constraint is lifted.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a general discrete-time spectral factorization problem for rational matrix-valued functions. We build on a recent result establishing existence of a spectral factor whose zeroes and poles lie in any pair of prescribed regions of the complex plane featuring a geometry compatible with symplectic symmetry. In this general setting, uniqueness of the spectral factor is not guaranteed. It was, however, conjectured that if we further impose stochastic minimality, uniqueness can be recovered. The main result of his paper is a proof of this conjecture.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a complete characterization of the free boundary of a particular solution to the following spectral $k$-partition problem with measure and inclusion constraints: \[ \inf \left\{\sum_{i=1}^k \lambda_1(\omega_i)\; : \; \omega_i \subset \Omega \mbox{ are nonempty open sets for all } i=1,\ldots, k,\; \omega_i \cap \omega_j = \emptyset \: \text{for all}\: i \not=j \mbox{ and } \sum_{i=1}^{k}|\omega_i| = a \right\}, \] where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$, $a\in (0,|\Omega|)$. In particular, we prove free boundary conditions, classify contact points, characterize the regular and singular part of the free boundary (including branching points), and describe the interaction of the partition with the fixed boundary $\partial \Omega$. The proof is based on a perturbed version of the problem, combined with monotonicity formulas, blowup analysis and classification of blowups, suitable deformations of optimal sets and eigenfunctions, as well as the improvement of flatness of [Russ-Trey-Velichkov, CVPDE 58, 2019] for the one-phase points, and of [De Philippis-Spolaor-Velichkov, Invent. Math. 225, 2021] at two-phase points.

Abstract:Caffarelli-Hardt-Simon used the minimal surface equation on the Simons cone $C(S^3\times S^3)$ to generate newer examples of minimal hypersurfaces with isolated singularities. Hardt-Simon proved that every area-minimizing quadratic cone $\mathcal{C}$ having only an isolated singularity can be approximated by a unique foliation of $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ by smooth, area-minimizing hypersurfaces asymptotic to $\mathcal C$. This paper uses methods similar to Caffareli-Hardt-Simon to solve the minimal surface equation for the Hardt-Simon surfaces in the sphere for some boundary values. We use gluing methods to construct minimal surfaces over Hardt-Simon surfaces and near quadratic cones.

Abstract:The Clifford 2-torus in and the equlaterial 2-torus in are known as the only minimal immersions of 2-tori into spheres by the first eigenfunctions (called -minimal for short). For , the Clifford n -torus in might be the only known example of -minimal n -tori in the literature. By discussing the general construction of homogeneous minimal flat n -tori in spheres, we construct several new examples of -minimal flat 3-tori and 4-tori. In particular, the existence of 2-parameter family of non-congruent -minimal flat 4-tori is shown for the first time. We obtain the complete classification for -minimal immersions of conformally flat 3-tori and 4-tori in spheres, by some detailed investigations of shortest vectors in lattices, which could be of independent interests. Using them, we also solve the Berger's problem (finding the maximal value of the dilation-invariant functional ) among all flat 3-tori and 4-tori.

Exponential Networks for Linear Partitions

Abstract:Previous work has given proof and evidence that BPS states in local Calabi-Yau 3-folds can be described and counted by exponential networks on the punctured plane, with the help of a suitable non-abelianization map to the mirror curve. This provides an appealing elementary depiction of moduli of special Lagrangian submanifolds, but so far only a handful of examples have been successfully worked out in detail. In this note, we exhibit an explicit correspondence between torus fixed points of the Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb C^2\subset\mathbb C^3$ and anomaly free exponential networks attached to the quadratically framed pair of pants. This description realizes an interesting, and seemingly novel, "age decomposition" of linear partitions. We also provide further details about the networks' perspective on the full D-brane moduli space.

Abstract:On estimations of the lower and upper bounds for the spectral and nuclear norm of a tensor, Li established neat bounds for the two norms based on regular tensor partitions, and proposed a conjecture for the same bounds to be hold based on general tensor partitions [Z. Li, Bounds on the spectral norm and the nuclear norm of a tensor based on tensor partition, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 37 (2016), pp. 1440-1452]. Later, Chen and Li provided a solution to the conjecture [Chen B., Li Z., On the tensor spectral p-norm and its dual norm via partitions]. In this short paper, we present a concise and different proof for the validity of the conjecture, which also offers a new and simpler proof to the bounds of the spectral and nuclear norms established by Li for regular tensor partitions. Two numerical examples are provided to illustrate tightness of these bounds.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a notion of Poincaré exponent for isometric representations of discrete groups on Hilbert spaces. Similarly as growth exponents control the geometry this exponent is shown to control the size of spectral gaps. Following similar ideas as Patterson and Sullivan it is used in the case of negatively curved groups to construct weakly contained boundary representations reflecting the spectral properties of the original representation analogously as complementary series representations in the case of semi-simple Lie groups. This is exploited to deduced sharp estimates on spectral invariants. A quantitive property (T) á la Cowling is also established proving uniform bound on the mixing rate of representations of hyperbolic groups with property (T). Along the way some properties of boundary representations are discussed. A original characterisation of the positivity of the so-called Knapp-Stein operators and certain fusion rules on the boundary complementary series representations are established.

On two-color partitions with odd smallest part

Abstract:We will consider two-color integer partitions in which the smallest part is odd and the odd or the even parts may occur only in one color. It turns out that these partitions are generated by the mock theta functions of third order due to Ramanujan and Watson. Motivated by this, we will also consider two-color partitions in which the parts of the same parity may occur in both colors.

Abstract:We prove that strictly mean convex toroids contain infinitely many (geometrically distinct) embedded free boundary minimal Möbius bands as well as infinitely many embedded free boundary minimal annuli. The surfaces in both families are constructed by means of equivariant variational methods and their areas grow linearly with the order of their symmetry groups.

Abstract:We consider the minimum-cut partitioning of a graph into more than two parts using spectral methods. While there exist well-established spectral algorithms for this problem that give good results, they have traditionally not been well motivated. Rather than being derived from first principles by minimizing graph cuts, they are typically presented without direct derivation and then proved after the fact to work. In this paper, we take a contrasting approach in which we start with a matrix formulation of the minimum cut problem and then show, via a relaxed optimization, how it can be mapped onto a spectral embedding defined by the leading eigenvectors of the graph Laplacian. The end result is an algorithm that is similar in spirit to, but different in detail from, previous spectral partitioning approaches. In tests of the algorithm we find that it outperforms previous approaches on certain particularly difficult partitioning problems.
