Abstract:In a recent pioneering work, Andrews and Newman defined an extended function $p_{A,a}(n)$ of their minimal excludant or "mex" of a partition function. By considering the special cases $p_{k,k}(n)$ and $p_{2k,k}(n)$, they unearthed connections to the rank and crank of partitions and some restricted partitions. In this paper, we build on their work and obtain more general results associating the extended mex function with the number of partitions of an integer with arbitrary bound on the rank and crank. We also derive a new result expressing the smallest parts function of Andrews as a finite sum of the extended mex function in consideration with a curious coefficient. We also obtain a few restricted partition identities with some reminiscent of shifted partition identities. Finally, we define and explore a new minimal excludant for overpartitions.

On the combinatorics of r-chain minimal and maximal excludants

Abstract:The minimal excludant (mex) of a partition was introduced by Grabner and Knopfmacher under the name `least gap' and was revived by a couple of papers due to Andrews and Newman. It has been widely studied in recent years together with the complementary partition statistic maximal excludant (maex), first introduced by Chern. Among such recent works, the first and second authors along with Maji introduced and studied the $r$-chain minimal excludants (r-chain mex) which led to a new generalization of Euler's classical partition theorem and the sum-of-mex identity of Andrews and Newman. In this paper, we first give combinatorial proofs for these two results on r-chain mex. Then we introduce the r-chain maximal excludants (r-chain maex) and establish the associated identity for the sum of r-chain maex over all partitions, both analytically and combinatorially.

Abstract:Define the minimal excludant of an overpartition $\pi$, denoted $ \overline{\text{mex}}(\pi)$, to be the smallest positive integer that is not a part of the non-overlined parts of $\pi$. For a positive integer $n$, the function $\sigma\overline{\text{mex}}(n)$ is the sum of the minimal excludants over all overpartitions of $n$. In this paper, we proved that the $\sigma\overline{\text{mex}}(n)$ equals the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts using three colors. We also provide an asymptotic formula for $\sigma\overline{\text{mex}}(n)$ and show that $\sigma\overline{\text{mex}}(n)$ is almost always even and is odd exactly when $n$ is a triangular number. Moreover, we generalize $ \overline{\text{mex}}(\pi)$ using the least $r$-gaps, denoted $ \overline{\text{mex}_r}(\pi)$, defined as the smallest part of the non-overlined parts of the overpartition $\pi$ appearing less than $r$ times. Similarly, for a positive integer $n$, the function $\sigma_r\overline{\text{mex}}(n)$ is the sum of the least $r$-gaps over all overpartitions of $n$. We derive a generating function and an asymptotic formula for $\sigma_r\overline{\text{mex}}(n)$ . Lastly, we study the arithmetic density of $\sigma_r\overline{\text{mex}}(n)$ modulo $2^k$, where $r=2^m\cdot3^n, m,n \in \mathbb{Z}_\geq 0.$

Abstract:We will consider two-color integer partitions in which the smallest part is odd and the odd or the even parts may occur only in one color. It turns out that these partitions are generated by the mock theta functions of third order due to Ramanujan and Watson. Motivated by this, we will also consider two-color partitions in which the parts of the same parity may occur in both colors.

Abstract:Recently, Andrews and El Bachraoui (2024) proved three very interesting $q$-series identities, from which three simple looking identities involving certain restricted partitions into distinct even parts and $4$-regular partitions follow. In this short note, we give combinatorial proofs of these identities. We also prove the counterpart identities for the restricted partitions into distinct odd parts.

Abstract:Recently, MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisor functions were shown to link partitions, quasimodular forms, and q-multiple zeta values. In this paper, we explore many further properties and extensions of these. Firstly, we address a question of Ono by producing infinite families of MacMahon-like functions that approximate the colored partition functions (and indeed other eta quotients). We further explore the MacMahon-like functions and discover new and suggestive arithmetic structure and modular completions.

Abstract:Andrews and Newman introduced the minimal excludant or ``$mex$'' function for an integer partition $\pi$ of a positive integer $n$, $mex(\pi)$, as the smallest positive integer that is not a part of $\pi$. They defined $\sigma mex(n)$ to be the sum of $mex(\pi)$ taken over all partitions $\pi$ of $n$. We prove infinite families of congruence and multiplicative formulas for $\sigma mex(n)$. By restricting to the part of $\pi$, Andrews and Newman also introduced $moex(\pi)$ to be the smallest odd integer that is not a part of $\pi$ and $\sigma moex(n)$ to be the sum of $moex(\pi)$ taken over all partitions $\pi$ of $n$. In this article, we show that for any sufficiently large $X$, the number of all positive integer $n\leq X$ such that $\sigma moex(n)$ is an even (or odd) number is at least $\mathcal{O}(\log \log X)$.

Abstract:We show that Ramanujan-type congruences are preserved by the action of the shallow Hecke algebra and provide several structure results for them. We discover a dichotomy between congruences originating in Hecke eigenvalues and congruences on arithmetic progressions with cube-free periods. The scarcity of the latter was investigated recently. We explain that they provide congruences among algebraic parts of twisted central $\mathrm{L}$-values. We specialize our results to partition congruences, for which we investigate the proofs of partition congruences by Atkin and by Ono, and develop a heuristic that suggests that their approach by Hecke operators acting diagonally modulo $\ell$ on modular forms is optimal. In an extended example, we showcase how to employ our conclusions to benefit experimental work.

In 2006, Treneer discovered an explicit infinite family of congruences of overpartitions modulo $5$. In our research, we have identified explicit infinite families of congruences of overpartitions modulo $3,7,11$. This work reveals the connection between overpartitions and half-integral modular forms.

Abstract:The notion of minimal complements was introduced by Nathanson in 2011. Since then, the existence or the inexistence of minimal complements of sets have been extensively studied. Recently, the study of inverse problems, i.e., which sets can or cannot occur as minimal complements has gained traction. For example, the works of Kwon, Alon--Kravitz--Larson, Burcroff--Luntzlara and also that of the authors, shed light on some of the questions in this direction. These works have focussed mainly on the group of integers, or on abelian groups. In this work, our motivation is two-fold: (i) to show some new results on the inverse problem, (ii) to concentrate on the inverse problem in not necessarily abelian groups. As a by-product, we obtain new results on non-minimal complements in the group of integers and more generally, in any finitely generated abelian group of positive rank and in any free abelian group of positive rank. Moreover, we show the existence of uncountably many subsets in such groups which are "robust" non-minimal complements.

Abstract:Ramanujan recorded five interesting q-series identities in a section that is not as systematically arranged as the other chapters of his second notebook. These five identities do not seem to have acquired enough attention. Recently, Dixit and the third author found a one-variable generalization of one of the aforementioned five identities. From their generalized identity, they were able to derive the last three of these q-series identities, but didn't establish the first two. In the present article, we derive a one-variable generalization of the main identity of Dixit and the third author from which we successfully deduce all the five q-series identities of Ramanujan. In addition to this, we also establish a few interesting weighted partition identities from our generalized identity. In the mid 1980's, Bressoud and Subbarao found an interesting identity connecting the generalized divisor function with a weighted partition function, which they proved by means of a purely combinatorial argument. Quite surprisingly, we found an analytic proof for a generalization of the identity of Bressoud and Subbarao, starting from the fourth identity of the aforementioned five q-series identities of Ramanujan.
