Abstract:In continuation of \cite{HHOT}, we discuss the question of spectral minimal 3-partitions for the rectangle $]-\frac a2,\frac a2[\times ] -\frac b2,\frac b2[ $, with $0< a\leq b$. It has been observed in \cite{HHOT} that when $0<\frac ab < \sqrt{\frac 38}$ the minimal 3-partition is obtained by the three nodal domains of the third eigenfunction corresponding to the three rectangles $]-\frac a2,\frac a2[\times ] -\frac b2,-\frac b6[$, $]-\frac a2,\frac a2[\times ] -\frac b6,\frac b6[$ and $]-\frac a2,\frac a2[\times ] \frac b6, \frac b2[$. We will describe a possible mechanism of transition for increasing $\frac ab$ between these nodal minimal 3-partitions and non nodal minimal 3-partitions at the value $ \sqrt{\frac 38}$ and discuss the existence of symmetric candidates for giving minimal 3-partitions when $ \sqrt{\frac 38}<\frac ab \leq 1$. Numerical analysis leads very naturally to nice questions of isospectrality which are solved by introducing Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonians or by going on the double covering of the punctured rectangle.

Abstract:Let Vn+1 be an (n + 1)-dimensional real vector space and (F) over tilde = (alpha) over tilde phi(s) s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be all (alpha, beta)-metric, where (alpha) over tilde is an Euclidean metric and (beta) over tilde is a one form. Minimal surfaces with respect to the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and the Holmes-Thompson measure are called BH-minimal and HT-minimal surfaces, respectively. We give a Bernstein type theorem for minimal graphs in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde) with n <= 7. Let (F) over tilde (b) = (alpha) over tilde phi(s), s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be a Minkowski metric with b := parallel to(beta) over tilde parallel to(alpha) over tilde. We use a PDE to characterize the BH-minimal and HT-minimal graph over any hyperplane containing the origin in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde (b)). Then we prove that this PDE is an elliptic equation of mean curvature type when b is an element of [0, is an element of) for sonic constant is an element of > 0 and give a Bernstein type theorem for BH-minimal surface in (V-3, (F) over tilde (b)). BH-minimal cones with an isolated singularity at the origin are also given.
Spectral analysis of the Neumann-Poincaré operator for thin doubly connected domains

Abstract:We analyze the spectrum of the Neumann-Poincaré (NP) operator for a doubly connected domain lying between two level curves defined by a conformal mapping, where the inner boundary of the domain is of general shape. The analysis relies on an infinite-matrix representation of the NP operator involving the Grunsky coefficients of the conformal mapping and an application of the Gershgorin circle theorem. As the thickness of the domain shrinks to zero, the spectrum of the doubly connected domain approaches the interval $[-1/2,1/2]$ in the Hausdorff distance and the density of eigenvalues approaches that of a thin circular annulus.

Stability of spectral partitions with corners

Abstract:A spectral minimal partition of a manifold is a decomposition into disjoint open sets that minimizes a spectral energy functional. While it is known that bipartite minimal partitions correspond to nodal partitions of Courant-sharp Laplacian eigenfunctions, the non-bipartite case is much more challenging. In this paper, we unify the bipartite and non-bipartite settings by defining a modified Laplacian operator and proving that the nodal partitions of its eigenfunctions are exactly the critical points of the spectral energy functional. Moreover, we prove that the Morse index of a critical point equals the nodal deficiency of the corresponding eigenfunction. Some striking consequences of our main result are: 1) in the bipartite case, every local minimum of the energy functional is in fact a global minimum; 2) in the non-bipartite case, every local minimum of the energy functional minimizes within a certain topological class of partitions. Our results are valid for partitions with non-smooth boundaries; this introduces considerable technical challenges, which are overcome using delicate approximation arguments in the Sobolev space $H^{1/2}$.

Abstract:A spectral minimal partition of a manifold is its decomposition into disjoint open sets that minimizes a spectral energy functional. It is known that bipartite spectral minimal partitions coincide with nodal partitions of Courant-sharp Laplacian eigenfunctions. However, almost all minimal partitions are non-bipartite. To study those, we define a modified Laplacian operator and prove that the nodal partitions of its Courant-sharp eigenfunctions are minimal within a certain topological class of partitions. This yields new results in the non-bipartite case and recovers the above known result in the bipartite case. Our approach is based on tools from algebraic topology, which we illustrate by a number of examples where the topological types of partitions are characterized by relative homology.

Abstract:In $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ there is a two-parameter family of properly embedded minimal annuli foliated by circles. In this paper we show that this family contains all properly embedded minimal annuli. We use the description of minimal annuli in $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ by periodic harmonic maps $G : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{S}^2$ of finite type. Due to the algebraic geometric correspondence of Hitchin [14], these harmonic maps are parametrized by hyperelliptic algebraic curves together with Abelian differentials with prescribed poles. We deform annuli by deforming spectral data in the corresponding moduli space. Along this deformation we control the flux and we preserve embeddedness. The center of the theory concerns the study of singularities of the flow. In particular we open and close nodes of singular spectral curves. This approach applies also to mean convex Alexandrov embedded cmc annuli in $\mathbb{S}^3$ [12].

Abstract:Differential growth processes play a prominent role in shaping leaves and biological tissues. Using both analytical and numerical calculations, we consider the shapes of closed, elastic strips which have been subjected to an inhomogeneous pattern of swelling. The stretching and bending energies of a closed strip are frustrated by compatibility constraints between the curvatures and metric of the strip. To analyze this frustration, we study the class of "conical" closed strips with a prescribed metric tensor on their center line. The resulting strip shapes can be classified according to their number of wrinkles and the prescribed pattern of swelling. We use this class of strips as a variational ansatz to obtain the minimal energy shapes of closed strips and find excellent agreement with the results of a numerical bead-spring model. We derive and test a surprising resonance condition for strips with minimal bending energy along the strip center line to exist.

Abstract:We investigate the spectrum of the Dirac operator with infinite mass boundary conditions posed in a tubular neighborhood of a smooth compact hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^n$ without boundary. We prove that when the tubular neighborhood shrinks to the hypersurface, the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues is driven by a Schrödinger operator involving electric and Yang-Mills potentials, both of geometric nature.

Abstract:The central theme of this paper is the holomorphic spectral theory of the canonical Laplace operator of the complement $\Omega := \{(z,w) \in \widehat{\mathbb{C}}^2 \colon z \cdot w \neq 1\}$ of the "complexified unit circle" $\{(z,w) \in \widehat{\mathbb{C}}^2 \colon z \cdot w = 1\}$. We start by singling out a distinguished set of holomorphic eigenfunctions on the bidisk in terms of hypergeometric functions and prove that they provide a spectral decomposition of every holomorphic eigenfunction on the bidisk. As a second step, we identify the maximal domains of definition of these eigenfunctions and show that these maximal domains naturally determine the fine structure of the eigenspaces. Our main result gives an intrinsic classification of all closed Möbius invariant subspaces of eigenspaces of the canonical Laplacian of $\Omega$. Generalizing foundational prior work of Helgason and Rudin, this provides a unifying complex analytic framework for the real-analytic eigenvalue theories of both the hyperbolic and spherical Laplace operators on the open unit disk resp. the Riemann sphere and, in particular, shows how they are interrelated with one another.

Quantitative spectral stability for the Neumann Laplacian in domains with small holes

Abstract:The aim of the present paper is to investigate the behavior of the spectrum of the Neumann Laplacian in domains with little holes excised from the interior. More precisely, we consider the eigenvalues of the Laplacian with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions on a bounded, Lipschitz domain. Then, we singularly perturb the domain by removing Lipschitz sets which are "small" in a suitable sense and satisfy a uniform extension property. In this context, we provide an asymptotic expansion for all the eigenvalues of the perturbed problem which are converging to simple eigenvalues of the limit one. The eigenvalue variation turns out to depend on a geometric quantity resembling the notion of (boundary) torsional rigidity: understanding this fact is one of the main contributions of the present paper. In the particular case of a hole shrinking to a point, through a fine blow-up analysis, we identify the exact vanishing order of such a quantity and we establish some connections between the location of the hole and the sign of the eigenvalue variation.

In this paper we discuss a class of spectral partition problems with a measure constraint, for partitions of a given bounded connected open set. We establish the existence of an optimal open partition, showing that the corresponding eigenfunctions are locally Lipschitz continuous, and obtain some qualitative properties for the partition. The proof uses an equivalent weak formulation that involves a minimization problem of a penalized functional where the variables are functions rather than domains, suitable deformations, blowup techniques, and a monotonicity formula.

Spectral estimates for free boundary minimal surfaces via Montiel-Ros partitioning methods

Abstract:We adapt and extend the Montiel-Ros methodology to compact manifolds with boundary, allowing for mixed (including oblique) boundary conditions and also accounting for the action of a finite group $G$ together with an additional twisting homomorphism $\sigma\colon G\to\operatorname O(1)$. We then apply this machinery in order to obtain quantitative lower and upper bounds on the growth rate of the Morse index of free boundary minimal surfaces with respect to the topological data (i. e. the genus and the number of boundary components) of the surfaces in question. In particular, we compute the exact values of the equivariant Morse index and nullity for two infinite families of examples, with respect to their maximal symmetry groups, and thereby derive explicit two-sided linear bounds when the equivariance constraint is lifted.

Abstract:We consider the Neumann-Poincaré operator on a three-dimensional axially symmetric domain which is generated by rotating a planar domain around an axis which does not intersect the planar domain. We investigate its spectral structure when it is restricted to axially symmetric functions. If the boundary of the domain is smooth, we show that there are infinitely many axially symmetric eigenfunctions and derive Weyl-type asymptotics of the corresponding eigenvalues. We also derive the leading order terms of the asymptotic limits of positive and negative eigenvalues. The coefficients of the leading order terms are related to the convexity and concavity of the domain. If the boundary of the domain is less regular, we derive decay estimates of the eigenvalues. The decay rate depends on the regularity of the boundary. We also consider the domains with corners and prove that the essential spectrum of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on the axially symmetric three-dimensional domain is non-trivial and contains that of the planar domain.

We discuss a series of results showing that Schrödinger operators can exhibit spectra that are remarkably thin in the sense of Lebesgue measure and fractal dimensions. Abstract:The article examines spectral problems in a domain Ωε , which is the union of a domain Ω0 and a lot of thin trees that are ε -periodically situated along a manifold on the boundary of Ω0 . The trees possess a finite number of branching levels. At the boundaries of branches from each branching level, the perturbed Steklov spectral condition ∂νuε=εαλερi,muε is given, where α∈R . For a fixed ε , the problem possesses a discrete spectrum, and we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions as ε→0 , i.e. when the number of thin trees infinitely increases and their thickness vanishes. Three qualitatively distinct cases of the asymptotic behavior of the spectrum are identified depending on the parameter α . For each case, the study provides proof of the Hausdorff convergence of the spectrum, construction of leading asymptotic terms, and justification of the asymptotic estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. For a point in the essential spectrum of the homogenized problem, we discover finite-energy eigenoscillations localized in one or some of the thin trees, and prove the asymptotic estimates. Cases, where the Steklov condition contains α depending on the branching level, are also discussed.
