Detecting Agents: the McCarthy and Hayes Martian Problem 1

Abstract:In a well-known paper published in 1969, John McCarthy and Pat Hayes asked what criteria a Martian entering a room on Earth should use to detect any agents that might be present in the room. Here we present a simple discrete mathematical model of a space, time and matter manifold, called a STaM, as a context in which to search for agents. We focus on two- dimensional Boolean STaMs, and report implemented algorithms for detecting agents within them. A specific example STaM is given, some experimental results are presented and discussed, and conclusions are drawn.
