Abstract:F.-H. Lin (1989) studied minimal graphs of the Dirichlet problem in the hyperbolic space and proved that any such minimal graph has the same global regularity as the boundary if the dimension of the minimal graph is even and that there is an obstacle to the higher regularity if the dimension is odd. We discuss the odd-dimensional case and study how the higher regularity is obstructed. We introduce the logarithmic distance to the boundary as an additional independent self-variable and establish concise boundary regularity for the minimal graph.

Abstract:A minimal geodesic on a Riemannian manifold is a geodesic defined on $\mathbb{R}$ that lifts to a globally distance minimizing curve on the universal covering. Bangert proved that there is a lower bound for the number of geometrically distinct minimal geodesics of closed Riemannian manifolds that is linear in the first Betti number, using the stable norm unit ball on the first homology. We refine this method to obtain a quadratic lower bound.

Abstract:We study minimal graphs with linear growth on complete manifolds $M^m$ with $\mathrm{Ric} \ge 0$. Under the further assumption that the $(m-2)$-th Ricci curvature in radial direction is bounded below by $C r(x)^{-2}$, we prove that any such graph, if non-constant, forces tangent cones at infinity of $M$ to split off a line. Note that $M$ is not required to have Euclidean volume growth. We also show that $M$ may not split off any line. Our result parallels that obtained by Cheeger, Colding and Minicozzi for harmonic functions. The core of the paper is a new refinement of Korevaar's gradient estimate for minimal graphs, together with heat equation techniques.

Abstract:We study asymptotic behaviors of solutions f to the Dirichlet problem for minimal graphs in the hyperbolic space with singular asymptotic boundaries under the assumption that the boundaries are piecewise regular with positive curvatures, a case which also arises in the study of a Chaplygin gas. We derive an estimate of such solutions by the corresponding solutions in the intersections of interior tangent balls. The positivity of curvatures plays an important role.

Abstract:We study the Dirichlet problem for minimal surface systems in arbitrary dimension and codimension via mean curvature flow, and obtain the existence of minimal graphs over arbitrary mean convex bounded C2 domains for a large class of prescribed boundary data. This result can be seen as a natural generalization of the classical sharp criterion for solvability of the minimal surface equation by Jenkins-Serrin. In contrast, we also construct a class of prescribed boundary data on just mean convex domains for which the Dirichlet problem in codimension 2 is not solvable. Moreover, we study existence and the uniqueness of minimal graphs by perturbation.

Abstract:For any , let denote the space containing all locally Lipschitz minimal graphs of dimension n and of arbitrary codimension m in Euclidean space with uniformly bounded 2-dilation of their graphic functions. In this paper, we show that this is a natural class to extend structural results known for codimension one. In particular, we prove that any tangent cone C of at infinity has multiplicity one. This enables us to get a Neumann–Poincaré inequality on stationary indecomposable components of C . A corollary is a Liouville theorem for M . For small (we can take any ), we prove that (i) for , M is flat; (ii) for and a non-flat M , any tangent cone of M at infinity is a multiplicity one quasi-cylindrical minimal cone in whose singular set has dimension .

On the number of minimal forts of a graph

Abstract:In 2018, a fort of a graph was introduced as a non-empty subset of vertices in which no vertex outside of the set has exactly one neighbor in the set. Since then, forts have been used to characterize zero forcing sets, model the zero forcing number as an integer program, and generate lower bounds on the zero forcing number of a Cartesian product. In this article, we investigate the number of minimal forts of a graph, where a fort is minimal if every proper subset is not a fort. In particular, we show that the number of minimal forts of a graph of order at least six is strictly less than Sperner's bound, a famous bound due to Emanuel Sperner (1928) on the size of a collection of subsets where no subset contains another. Then, we derive an explicit formula for the number of minimal forts for several families of graphs, including the path, cycle, and spider graphs. Moreover, we show that the asymptotic growth rate of the number of minimal forts of the spider graph is bounded above by that of the path graph. We conjecture that the asymptotic growth rate of the path graph is extremal over all trees. Finally, we develop methods for constructing minimal forts of graph products using the minimal forts of the original graphs. In the process, we derive explicit formulas and lower bounds on the number of minimal forts for additional families of graphs, such as the wheel, sunlet, and windmill graphs. Most notably, we show that the family of windmill graphs has an exponential number of minimal forts with a maximum asymptotic growth rate of cube root of three, which is the largest asymptotic growth rate we have observed. We conjecture that there exist families of graphs with a larger asymptotic growth rate.

Abstract:The amount of hyperplanes that are needed in order to cover the Boolean cube has been studied in various contexts. Linial and Radhakrishnan introduced the notion of essential covers. An essential cover is a collection of hyperplanes that form a minimal cover of the vertices of the hypercube, and every coordinate is influential in at least one of the hyperplanes. Linial and Radhakrishnan proved using algebraic tools that every essential cover of the n -cube must be of size at least . We devise a stronger lower bound method, and show that the size of every essential cover is at least . This result has implications in proof complexity, because essential covers have been used to prove lower bounds for several proof systems.

A unimodular random graph with large upper growth and no growth

Abstract:We construct a unimodular random rooted graph with maximal degree $d\geq 3$ and upper growth rate $d-1$, which does not have a growth rate. Abért, Fraczyk and Hayes showed that for a unimodular random tree, if the upper growth rate is at least $\sqrt{d-1}$, then the growth rate exists, and asked with some scepticism if this may hold for more general graphs. Our construction shows that the answer is negative. We also provide a non-hyperfinite example of a unimodular random graph with no growth rate. This may be of interest in light of a conjecture of Abért that unimodular Riemannian surfaces of bounded negative curvature always have growth.

Abstract:One of the fundamental results in graph minor theory is that for every planar graph $H$, there is a minimum integer $f(H)$ such that graphs with no minor isomorphic to $H$ have treewidth at most $f(H)$. A lower bound for ${f(H)}$ can be obtained by considering the maximum integer $k$ such that $H$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles. There exists a graph of treewidth ${\Omega(k\log k)}$ which does not contain $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles, from which it follows that ${f(H) = \Omega(k\log k)}$. In particular, if ${f(H)}$ is linear in ${\lvert{V(H)}\rvert}$ for graphs $H$ from a subclass of planar graphs, it is necessary that $n$-vertex graphs from the class contain at most ${O(n/\log(n))}$ vertex-disjoint cycles. We ask whether this is also a sufficient condition, and demonstrate that this is true for classes of planar graphs with bounded component size. For an $n$-vertex graph $H$ which is a disjoint union of $r$ cycles, we show that ${f(H) \leq 3n/2 + O(r^2 \log r)}$, and improve this to ${f(H) \leq n + O(\sqrt{n})}$ when ${r = 2}$. In particular this bound is linear when ${r=O(\sqrt{n}/\log(n))}$. We present a linear bound for ${f(H)}$ when $H$ is a subdivision of an $r$-edge planar graph for any constant $r$. We also improve the best known bounds for ${f(H)}$ when $H$ is the wheel graph or the ${4 \times 4}$ grid, obtaining a bound of $160$ for the latter.

Minimal Regular graphs with every edge in a triangle

Abstract:Considering regular graphs with every edge in a triangle we prove lower bounds for the number of triangles in such graphs. For r-regular graphs with r <= 5 we exhibit families of graphs with exactly that number of triangles and then classify all such graphs using line graphs and even cycle decompositions. Examples of ways to create such r-regular graphs with r >= 6 are also given. In the 5-regular case, these minimal graphs are proven to be the only regular graphs with every edge in a triangle which cannot have an edge removed and still have every edge in a triangle.

Abstract:We discuss the global regularity of solutions f to the Dirichlet problem for minimal graphs in the hyperbolic space when the boundary of the domain Ω⊂ℝ^n has a nonnegative mean curvature and prove an optimal regularity f∈ C^1/n+1(Ω̅). We can improve the Hölder exponent for f if certain combinations of principal curvatures of the boundary do not vanish, a phenomenon observed by F.-H. Lin.

In this article, we first give an upper bound on lambda(1)(G) for a non-regular graph involving Delta and D; next present two upper bounds on lambda(1)(G) for a connected graph in terms of d(i) and ((alpha)m)(i); at last obtain a lower bound on lambda(1)(G) for a connected bipartite graph in terms of d(i) and ((alpha)t)(i). Some known results are shown to be the consequences of our theorems.

Abstract:We show that for the Green's function on an area-minimizing boundary, it is bounded below universally by the Euclidean Green's function. We also obtain asymptotics of the Green's function near the pole and infinity. These are done by proving a $C^\alpha$ convergence of the Green's functions under the convergence of area-minimizing boundaries. For converging multiplicity 1 stationary varifolds, we have $L^p$ convergence of the Green's functions, but there are examples of stationary varifolds on which the lower bounds and asymptotics may fail. An application of the lower bound will be given in [9].

Abstract:In this paper we solve the longstanding Gaussian curvature conjecture of a minimal graph $S$ over the unit disk. This conjecture states the following. For any minimal graph lying above the entire unit disk, the Gaussian curvature at the point above the origin satisfies the sharp inequality $|\mathcal{K}|< \pi^2/2$. The conjecture is first reduced to the estimation of the Gaussian curvature of certain Scherk type minimal surfaces over some bicentric quadrilaterals inscribed in the unit disk containing the origin. Then we make a sharp estimate of the Gaussian curvature of those minimal surfaces over those bicentric quadrilaterals at the point above the zero. Our proof uses complex-analytic methods since minimal surfaces that we consider allow conformal harmonic parametrization.

A Lower Bound for Light Spanners in General Graphs

Abstract:A recent upper bound by Le and Solomon [STOC '23] has established that every $n$-node graph has a $(1+\varepsilon)(2k-1)$-spanner with lightness $O(\varepsilon^{-1} n^{1/k})$. This bound is optimal up to its dependence on $\varepsilon$; the remaining open problem is whether this dependence can be improved or perhaps even removed entirely. We show that the $\varepsilon$-dependence cannot in fact be completely removed. For constant $k$ and for $\varepsilon:= \Theta(n^{-\frac{1}{2k-1}})$, we show a lower bound on lightness of $$\Omega\left( \varepsilon^{-1/k} n^{1/k} \right).$$ For example, this implies that there are graphs for which any $3$-spanner has lightness $\Omega(n^{2/3})$, improving on the previous lower bound of $\Omega(n^{1/2})$. An unusual feature of our lower bound is that it is conditional on the girth conjecture with parameter $k-1$ rather than $k$. We additionally show that this implies certain technical limitations to improving our lower bound further. In particular, under the same conditional, generalizing our lower bound to all $\varepsilon$ \emph{or} obtaining an optimal $\varepsilon$-dependence are as hard as proving the girth conjecture for all constant $k$.
