Abstract:Nanoscale topography was constructed on a thermally responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) surface by grafting the polymer from silicon nanowire arrays via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The as-prepared surface showed largely reduced platelet adhesion in vitro both below and above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAAm ( approximately 32 degrees C), while a smooth PNIPAAm surface exhibited antiadhesion to platelets only below the LCST. Contact angle and adhesive force measurements on oil droplets (1,2-dichloroethane) in water demonstrated that the nanoscale topography kept a relatively high ratio of water content on the as-prepared surface and played a key role in largely reducing the adhesion of platelets; however, this effect did not exist on the smooth PNIPAAm surface. The results can be used to extend the applications of PNIPAAm in the fields of biomaterials and biomedicine under human physiological temperature and provide a new strategy for fabricating other blood-compatible materials.
Preparation and properties of thermoresponsive acrylonitrile-based copolymer nanofibrous membranes

Abstract:Diblock copolymers of acrylonitrile and N-isopropylacrylamide(NIPAM) were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization and the molecular weight distribution was found to be around 1.3.Nanofibrous membranes were prepared from the resultant copolymers by electrospinning.Optimized conditions for the electrospinning were established.FESEM images elucidate that the nanofibers are uniform.Water contact angles on the copolymer membranes show distinct transition upon temperature,which is around 20 ℃.This decreased transition temperature can be attributed to the introduction of a relatively hydrophobic polyacrylonitrile block.Bovine serum albumin adsorptions at different temperatures also confirm the thermoresponsive properties of the membranes,i.e.at lower temperature the fiber surface is more hydrophilic,which is protein-resistant.This thermoresponsive nanofibrious membrane show great potential in intelligent separation.

Abstract:A temperature-responsive polymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), was grafted onto porous polyethylene membranes by a plasma-induced graft polymerization technique. A wide range of grafting was achieved through variations in the grafting conditions, including the postpolymerization temperature, time, monomer concentration, and graft-reaction medium. The active species induced by plasma treatment was proven to be long-living via a postpolymerization time of 95 h. Different solvent compositions, that is, water, methanol, benzene, and water/methanol, were used as reaction media, and water showed a much higher polymerization rate than the organic solvents. Based on the hydrophilicity of the active species, a mechanism explaining the solvent effect in plasma-induced graft polymerization was examined. Characterizations by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and micro Fourier transform infrared showed that the grafted polymers were located on both the outer surface and inside pores of the membranes. The XPS analysis also confirmed that the polar amide groups tended to distribute more outward when grafted PNIPAAm was in its expanding state than when it was in its shrinking state. Water permeation experiments showed that the permeability of the grafted membranes varied dramatically with a slight temperature change in the vicinity of the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAAm. The effective pore radii of the grafted membranes above and below the LCST could be depicted by Hagen-Poiseuille's law. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Pnipamx-Ppo36-Pnipamx Thermo-Sensitive Triblock Copolymers: Chain Conformation And Adsorption Behavior On A Hydrophobic Gold Surface

Abstract:The chain conformations and adsorption behaviors of four thermo-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(x) poly(propylene oxide)(36)-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(x) (PNIPAmx-PPO36-PNIPAmx) triblock copolymers with x values of 15, 33, 75, and 117 in dilute aqueous solutions were investigated by combined techniques of micro-differential scanning calorimetry (micro-DSC), static and dynarhic light scattering (SLS & DLS), and the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). PNIPAm15-PPO36-PNIPAm15 only exhibited the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the PPO block, i.e. 25 degrees C, because the PNIPAm block with x = 15 was too short to maintain its own LCST. With middle lengths x of 33 and 75, the LCSTs of PPO and PNIPAm blocks were observed, respectively. For the longest PNIPAm block with x = 117, only LCST of PNIPAm block dominated, i.e. 32.3 degrees C. DLS results revealed that the four PNIPAmx-PPO36-PNIPAmx triblock copolymers formed "associate" structures in their dilute aqueous solutions at 20 degrees C, which was well below the LCSTs of the PPO and PNIPAm blocks. QCM results indicated that the adsorption time constant decreased with increasing adsorption temperature but tended to increase with increasing length x of the PNIPAm block. A complex adsorption behavior with large adsorption amounts was only observed at the corresponding LCST of the PNIPAm block for PNIPAmx-PPO36-PNIPAmx with longer PNIPAm blocks with x = 33, 75, and 117. Furthermore, the adsorbed PNIPAmx-PPO36-PNIPAmx layers obtained at 20 degrees C were rigid with less energy dissipation.

Abstract:PNIPAAm with terminal amino groups was synthesized using 2-aminoethanethiol hydrochloride (AESH) as a chain transfer agent. It was then reacted with methacryloyl chloride to result in macromer, vinly PNIPAAm. A graft copolymer, P(AN-g-NIPAAm) was synthesized through the copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) and vinyl PNIPAAm. Using this graft copolymer as an additive, thermal responsive PAN-based membranes were prepared by the immersion precipitation phase inversion method (IPPI). Results from FTIR and NMR indicate that the molecular weight of PNIPAAm can be effectively modulated by changing the concentration of AESH. Then, the weight average molecular weight (M-w) was measured by laser scattering. Results of captive bubble contact angle measurements and turbidity analysis show that the graft copolymers are still thermally responsive, which is more remarkable with higher PNIPAAm content. XPS analysis proves that the PNIPAAm graft chains are enriched at the membrane surface and pore surface during the course of IPPI because of the hydrophilicity of PNIPAAm. Pure water flux at 40 degrees C (above the LCST of PNIPAAm) is almost twice as that at 25 degrees C (below the LCST of PNIPAAm), which is due to the conformation change of PNIPAAm chains. All these results demonstrate the synthesized graft copolymers are effective additives for the preparation of thermal responsive PAN membranes.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymer (Pluronic F127) was modified by introducing poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) at both the PEO ends, and the pentablock copolymer (PNIPAM(41)-F127-PNIPAM(41), PN41) so prepared was characterized using gel permeation chromatography and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The degree of polymerization of NIPAM blocks at the two ends was 41. The solution behaviour and microstructure of PN41 aggregates in water were examined using UV-visible spectroscopy, micro-differential scanning calorimetry and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and compared with F127. Two lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) were observed for the pentablock copolymer, corresponding to PPO and PNIPAM blocks, respectively. The adsorption of PN41 on thiol-grafted hydrophobic gold surfaces at various temperatures was investigated using a quartz crystal microbalance. It was found that the adsorption behaviour and mechanism of PN41 were mainly determined by the interactions of the pentablock copolymers with different chain conformations in dilute aqueous solutions at various temperatures. SANS measurements were used to determine the temperature-dependent structural evolution of polymer micelles in aqueous solution. A NOESY study revealed that above the LSCT of PNIPAM, the interaction of PPO and PNIPAM protons increases and the distance between PPO and PNIPAM decreases. (c) 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a thermo-responsive membrane based on microporous polypropylene membrane (MPPM). Comb-like poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) was grafted onto the MPPM surface using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Hydroxyl groups were firstly introduced onto the membrane surface by the ultraviolet-induced graft polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Then ATRP initiators were immobilized through the reaction between the tethered hydroxyl groups and 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide, which initiated the ATRP of NIPAM on the membrane surface. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the chemical composition and surface morphologies of the modified membranes. The thermo-response of the modified membranes was evaluated by water contact angle and water permeation measurements. It is found that both water contact angles and water fluxes have obvious response to the environmental temperature. This type of membrane with controlled PNIPAM graft layer can be applied in many fields including smart separation.

Abstract:A temperature-sensitive N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) grafted polyethylene microporous membrane was prepared by the plasma-induced graft polymerization technique. The SEM observed that the poly(N-iso-propylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) chains grafted on the membrane surface exhibited difference configurations around the lower-critical solution temperature (LCST). The XPS analysis indicated that the amide groups of the grafted PNIPAAm tended to distribute outwards when PNIPAAm chains were in the swelling state, while enveloped by the nonpolar main chains when in their shrinking state. The water permeation flux of the grafted membrane varied dramatically with a slight change in temperature around the LCST, which showed that the grafted PNIPAAm could act effectively as a chemical valve to control the on—off behavior of the membrane pores. The streaming potential method was used to evaluate the surface charge status of the grafted membrane at different temperatures and pH conditions. The distribution change of surface charges was also confirmed to be thermosensitive around the LCST, which is similar to the change of the water permeation flux. The grafted membrane acquired more negative chages over the LCST than that under the LCST, which is induced by the difference of specific anion adsorption due to the hydrophilicity—hydrophobicity transition of the grafted PNIPAAm.

Abstract:N-Isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) was introduced onto the surface of polypropylene (PP). films to form a layer of poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) ( PNIPAAm) by UV-induced surface photograft polymerization reaction. Improvement on UV intensity and reaction temperature favored the increase of the grafting yield, yet it went through a maximum as monomer concentration was increased. Two photograft techniques, the xanthen-9-one pre-dipping method and dormant radical method,were tried and higher grafting yields were achieved by the latter. The existence of PNIPAAm grafted polymer layer was confirmed by FTIR, ESCA and SEM measurements. The acrylamide band I and II in FTIR spectra of the grafted polymer shifted as the temperature changed, which revealed the temperature sensitivity of the grafted films. Moreover, a special sphere-like surface morphology of the NIPAAm layers due to the temperature-responsive behaviors was observed by SEM.

Abstract:The temperature sensitivity of poly( N-isopropyl acrylamide) ( PNIPAAm)-grafted films was investigated through water absorbency and water contact angle measurements. Though it contributed little to the water absorbency of grafted films, the introduction of MBAAm retarded water evaporation from the grafted layers and also enhanced their hydrophilicity. It was found that below a certain critical temperature, the surface contact angle of the grafted films decreased during the measurement, which was related with the interaction process between the probing water drops and the film surfaces. A Temperature-dependent Real Time Contact Angle Measurement method (TRTCA), which is especially suitable for the LCST determination of temperature-sensitive grafted films, was developed based on a newly proposed contact angle modification algorithm to eliminate the influence of water evaporation. Finally, a two-stage model was proposed to describe the interaction process between the grafted films and water. Corresponding to this model, the critical grafting yield for grafted films crosslinked with MBAAm showing significant change of surface behavior was found to be around 0.6 mg/cm(2).

Abstract:In the preparation of a thermo-responsive, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)-grafted polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface by means of benzophenone-initiated photopolymerization, we observed that thick (>1 mm) PDMS substrates were much more difficult to be grafted with PNIPAAm than thin ones. Investigations revealed that the shortage of diffused benzophenone molecules in the surface region of the thick substrate might be the reason. By prolonging the time spent for treating the substrate with a benzophenone solution, PNIPAAm could be successfully grafted onto thick PDMS substrates. The PNIPAAm-grafted PDMS surface was highly thermo-responsive. The contact angle on a grafted surface increased from 38 to 91° in response to the temperature increase from 20 to 38 °C. An electroosmotic flow (EOF) mobility of 5×10−4 cm2/Vs was supported by a PNIPAAm-grafted PDMS channel at 50 °C, whereas negligible EOF was observed at 20 °C. Doxorubicin (DX), an anticancer drug, was adsorbed by the grafted surface at 40 °C, and the majority of the adsorbed DX was quickly released from the surface to a stripping solution at 5 °C. Osteoblast cells adhered onto the PNIPAAm-grafted PDMS surface and proliferated therein at 37 °C, while the cell sheet detached from the surface by lowering the temperature to 25 °C without using any enzymatic agent.

Abstract:Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) copolymers (PNIPAMs) containing pendent perfluoroalkyl (R-F) or dodecyl groups have been synthesized by copolymerization of NIPAM with small amounts of R-R-acrylates or -methacrylates containing a sulfonamido moiety between the acrylate and R-F groups or with dodecyl acrylate. Evidence for strong intermolecular hydrophobic association of the fluorocarbon groups is provided by large viscosity increases with copolymer concentration and upon addition of NaCl and surfactants, These interactions appear to be much stronger than that of the corresponding copolymers of poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) with similar comonomer contents, Hydrophobic association between the R-F groups is found to be much stronger than that of the corresponding dodecyl groups, The viscosity of some of the copolymer solutions, particularly in the presence of perfluorocarbon surfactants, was unusually temperature sensitive, decreasing by a factor of at least 1000 upon increasing the temperature from 10 to 20 degrees C. This large decrease is most probably related to the collapse of the copolymer coils near the lower critical solution temperature. This is in sharp contrast to the corresponding polyacrylamide or poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) R-F-acrylate copolymers that show viscosity increases with increasing temperature in the 40-60 degrees C range. The NIPIAM copolymers were also found to be different from the acrylamide or N,N-dimethylacrylamide perfluorocarbon acrylate copolymers in that they were found to be Newtonian at a low R-F content but dilatant at a higher comonomer content, (C) 2000 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Polymer surfaces typically have low surface tension and high chemical inertness and so they usually have poor wetting and adhesion properties. The surface properties can be altered by modifying the molecular structure using plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). In this work, Nylon-6 was treated using oxygen/nitrogen PIII. The observed improvement in the wettability is due to the oxygenated and nitrogen (amine) functional groups created on the polymer surface by the plasma treatment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show that nitrogen and oxygen plasma implantation result in C–C bond breaking to form the imine and amine groups as well as alcohol and/or carbonyl groups on the surface. The water contact angle results reveal that the surface wetting properties depend on the functional groups, which can be adjusted by the ratio of oxygen–nitrogen mixtures.

Abstract:Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM), poly(N-tert-butylacrylamide) (pNTBAM), and their copolymer brushes were covalently immobilized onto parylene C (PC) surfaces via surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Contact angle measurement between 13 and 40°C showed that the hydrophobicity of the modified PC surfaces was thermally sensitive. Among these samples, PC grafted with pNIPAM (PC-NI), PC grafted with pNTBAM (PC-NT) and PC grafted with copolymer brushes containing pNTBAM and pNIPAM (PC-NT-NI) exhibited the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at 29, 22, and 24°C, respectively. Cytocompatibility study for the modified surfaces was performed by 5 days human skin fibroblast culture at 37°C. Data showed that only a very small amount of cells adhered on the PC and PC-NI surfaces, while a significantly higher amount of cell adhesion and growth was observed on PC-NT and PC-NT-NI surfaces. Furthermore, cell detachment at the temperatures of 24 and 6°C were studied after the substrates were cultured with cells at 37°C for 24 h. The results showed that the cells on PC-NI formed the aggregations and loosely attached on the substrate after 30-min culture at 24°C, while no significant cell detachment was observed for PC-NT and PC-NT-NI samples at this temperature. By continuing the cell culture for additional 100 min at 6°C for PC-NT and PC-NT-NI, about 10 and 35% of the cells were found detached respectively, and the unattached cells aggregated on the substrate. In comparison, cells cultured on the tissue culture petri dish (TCP) exhibited no quantity and morphology changes at the culture temperatures of 37, 24, and 6°C. This study showed that: (1) immobilization of PC with nonthermal sensitive pNTBAM could provide PC surface thermal sensitive hydrophilicity; (2) the chlorines on the polymer brushes of PC-NT could be used to further initiate the ATRP pNIPAM and form block copolymer brushes; (3) the incorporation of pNTBAM into pNIPAM on PC-NT-NI could change the surface thermal hydrophilicity property, and be further applied to decrease the LCST of the modified PC surface; (4) grafted pNIPAM brushes on PC-NI by ATRP showed very low cell adhesion and proliferation in 5 days fibroblast culture at 37°C, and cell detached at 24°C; (5) the incorporation of pNTBAM into pNIPAM on PC-NT-NI decreased the thermal sensitivity of cell adhesion/detachment, cell detached at 6°C, but the cell adhesion and proliferation were significantly improved at a wide temperature range.
Thermoresponsive Surface Prepared by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization Directly from Poly(vinylidene Fluoride) for Control of Cell Adhesion and Detachment

Abstract:Thermoresponsive surface was prepared from commercial poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The direct initiation of the secondary fluorinated site of PVDF facilitated grafting of the N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) monomer. The PVDF surfaces grafted with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) [P(NIPAAm)] were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Kinetics study revealed that the P(NIPAAm) chain growth from the PVDF surface was consistent with a "controlled" process. The temperature-dependent swelling behavior of the surfaces in aqueous solution was studied by atomic force microscope. At 37 degrees C [above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST, about 32 degrees C) of NIPAAm], the seeded cells adhered and spread on the NIPAAm grafted PVDF surface. Below the LCST, the cells detached from the P(NIPAAm)-grafted PVDF surface spontaneously. Abstract:This study concerns the effects of temperature, compression rate, and packing density on conformational properties of polystyrene-block-poly(N-isopropylacryamide) (PS-b-PNIPAM) diblock copolymer monolayers at the air/water interface using the Langmuir balance technique. The dependency of surface pressure changes on temperature and compression rate is strongly influenced by the conformations of PNIPAM chains at the interface, which can be adjusted by varying the packing density. Specifically, when loops or tails are formed at the interface, PNIPAM chains display thermosensitive properties due to hydration/dehydration and obvious dependence on compression rate. When PNIPAM chains take train conformation at the air/water interface, however, the surface pressure changes are nearly independent of temperature and compression rate because almost all segments of the PNIPAM chains are adsorbed at the interface and the nonpolar isopropyl groups are preferentially oriented toward the air. Our work reveals that one could manipulate stimuli-responsive properties of PNIPAM chains at the interface simply by adjusting the conformations of PNIPAM chains.
Submicrometric Films of Surface-Attached Polymer Network with Temperature-Responsive Properties

Abstract:Temperature-responsive properties of surface-attached poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) network films with well-controlled chemistry are investigated. The synthesis consists of cross-linking and grafting preformed ene-reactive polymer chains through thiol--ene click chemistry. The formation of surface-attached and cross-linked polymer films has the advantage of being wellcontrolled without any caution of no-oxygen atmosphere or addition of initiators. PNIPAM hydrogel films with same cross-link density are synthesized on a wide range of thickness, from nanometers to micrometers. The swelling-collapse transition with temperature is studied by using ellipsometry, neutron reflectivity, and atomic force microscopy as complementary surface-probing techniques. Sharp and high amplitude temperature-induced phase transition is observed for all submicrometric PNIPAM hydrogel films. For temperature above LCST, surface-attached PNIPAM hydrogels collapse similarly but without complete expulsion of water. For temperature below LCST, the swelling of PNIPAM hydrogels depends on the film thickness. It is shown that the swelling is strongly affected by the surface attachment for ultrathin films below $\sim$150 nm. For thicker films above 150 nm (to micrometers), surface-attached polymer networks with the same cross-link density swell equally. The density profile of the hydrogel films in the direction normal to the substrate is confronted with in-plane topography of the free surface. It results that the free interface width is much larger than the roughness of the hydrogel film, suggesting pendant chains at the free surface.

Abstract:Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) was synthesized by free-radical polymerization. High resolution n.m.r. was used to confirm its chain composition and linear chain configuration. The solution properties of both unfractionated and fractionated PNIPAM samples in THF and water at 20-degrees-C were investigated by laser light scattering (LLS). Owing to its polyelectrolyte nature, it is extremely difficult, or nearly impossible, to obtain a set of narrowly distributed PNIPAM fractions with M(w)/M(n)<1.3. Therefore, a scaling relationship between the translational diffusion coefficient (D) and the molar mass (M) has not yet been established. In this study, a combination of M(w) from static LLS and the translational diffusion coefficient distribution (G(D)) from dynamic LLS results enabled us to establish D (cm2 s-1) =2.49 x 10(-4) M-0.540 for PNIPAM in THF at 20-degrees-C. Using this scaling relationship, we successfully calculated the molar mass distributions of a series of PNIPAM samples. For a given PNIPAM sample, the molar mass distributions obtained in different solvents are fairly comparable.
