Abstract:Free cumulants are multilinear functionals defined in terms of the moment functional with the use of the family of lattices of noncrossing partitions. In the univariate case, they can be identified with the coefficients of the Voiculescu transform of the moment functional which plays a role similar to that of the logarithm of the Fourier transform. The associated linearization property is connected with free independence. In turn, the family of much smaller lattices of interval partitions is used to define Boolean cumulants connected with Boolean independence. In order to bridge the gap between these two families of lattices and the associated cumulants we introduce and study the family of lattices of noncrossing partitions adapted to Motzkin paths and define the associated operator-valued `Motzkin cumulants'. We prove the corresponding Möbius inversion formula which plays the role of a lattice refinement of the formula expressing free cumulants in terms of Boolean cumulants. We apply this concept to free probability and obtain the additive decomposition of free cumulants in terms of scalar-valued counterparts of Motzkin cumulants.

Functional relations for higher-order free cumulants

Abstract:We establish the functional relations between generating series of higher-order free cumulants and moments in higher-order free probability, solving an open problem posed fifteen years ago by Collins, Mingo, Śniady and Speicher. We propose an extension of free probability theory, which governs the all-order topological expansion in unitarily invariant matrix ensembles, with a corresponding notion of free cumulants and give as well their relation to moments via functional relations. Our approach is based on the study of a master transformation involving double monotone Hurwitz numbers via semi-infinite wedge techniques, building on the recent advances of the last-named author with Bychkov, Dunin-Barkowski and Kazarian. We illustrate our formulas by computing the first few decaying terms of the correlation functions of an ensemble of spiked GUE matrices, going beyond the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem.

Abstract:We derive a formula for expressing free cumulants whose entries are products of random variables in terms of the lattice structure of non-crossing partitions. We show the usefulness of that result by giving direct and conceptually simple proofs for a lot of results about R-diagonal elements. Our investigations do not assume the trace property for the considered linear functionals.

Abstract:We discuss free probability theory and free harmonic analysis from a categorical perspective. In order to do so, we extend first the set of analytic convolutions and operations and then show that the comonadic structure governing free probability is isomorphic to several well-known categories of algebras, such as, e.g., Witt vectors, differential algebras, etc. Within this framework moment-cumulant formulae are shown to correspond to natural transformations and not to be exclusive to probability theories. Finally, we start to discuss free probability and in particular free harmonic analysis from the point of view of algebraic theories and operads.

Abstract:Abstract Cumulants are a notion that comes from the classical probability theory; they are an alternative to a notion of moments. We adapt the probabilistic concept of cumulants to the setup of a linear space equipped with two multiplication structures. We present an algebraic formula which involves those two multiplications as a sum of products of cumulants. In our approach, beside cumulants, we make use of standard combinatorial tools as forests and their colourings. We also show that the resulting statement can be understood as an analogue of Leonov–Shiryaev’s formula. This purely combinatorial presentation leads to some conclusions about structure constant of Jack characters.

Finite Free Cumulants: Multiplicative Convolutions, Genus Expansion and Infinitesimal Distributions

Abstract:Given two polynomials $p(x), q(x)$ of degree $d$, we give a combinatorial formula for the finite free cumulants of $p(x)\boxtimes_d q(x)$. We show that this formula admits a topological expansion in terms of non-crossing multi-annular permutations on surfaces of different genera. This topological expansion, on the one hand, deepens the connection between the theories of finite free probability and free probability, and in particular proves that $\boxtimes_d$ converges to $\boxtimes$ as $d$ goes to infinity. On the other hand, borrowing tools from the theory of second order freeness, we use our expansion to study the infinitesimal distribution of certain families of polynomials which include Hermite and Laguerre, and draw some connections with the theory of infinitesimal distributions for real random matrices. Finally, building off our results we give a new short and conceptual proof of a recent result [Steinerberger (2020), Hoskins and Kabluchko (2020)] that connects root distributions of polynomial derivatives with free fractional convolution powers.

About the foundation of the Kubo Generalized Cumulants theory. A revisited and corrected approach

Abstract:More than fifty years ago, in a couple of seminal works Kubo introduced the important idea of generalized cumulants, extending to stochastic operators this concept, implicitly introduced by Laplace in 1810. Kubo's idea has been applied in several branches of physics, where the result of the average process is a Lioville operator or an effective time evolution operator for the density matrix of spin systems or the reduced density matrix for boson-fermions etc. Despite this success, the theoretical developments in these Kubo works pose problems that were highlighted many years ago by Fox and van Kampen and never solved. These weaknesses and errors, in particular concerning the factorization property of exponentials of cumulants and the explicit expressions that give generalized cumulants in terms of generalized moments and vice-versa, caused some perplexity (and confusion) about the possible application of this procedure, limiting its use, in practice. In the present paper, we give a sound ground to the approach to cumulant operators, working in a general framework that shows the potentiality of the old Kubo's idea, today not yet fully exploited. It results that for the same moment operators, different definitions of generalized cumulants can be adopted. A general Kubo-Meeron closed-form formula giving cumulant operators in terms of moment operators cannot be obtained, but the reverse one, cumulants in terms of operators, is given and, noticeably, formally it {\em does not} depend on the specific nature of the moments, but just on the definition of the generalized cumulants.

Abstract:Cumulants represent a natural language for expressing macroscopic properties of a solid. We show that cumulants are subject to a nontrivial geometry. This geometry provides an intuitive understanding of a number of cumulant relations which had been obtained so far by using algebraic considerations. We give general expressions for their infinitesimal and finite transformations and represent a cumulant wave operator through an integration over a path in the Hilbert space. Cases are investigated where this integration can be done exactly. An expression of the ground-state wavefunction in terms of the cumulant wave operator is derived. In the second part of the article we derive the cumulant counterpart of Faddeev`s equations and show its connection to the method of increments.

Abstract:We study $\mathcal{O}$-operators and post-Lie products over the same Lie algebra compatible in a certain sense. We prove that the group product corresponding to the formal integration of the Lie algebra, which is adjacent to the sum of two compatible post-Lie products, can be factorized in a way reminiscent of the classical Semenov-Tian-Shanskii factorization. In the second part, we explore applications in non-commutative probability. We introduce new transforms that facilitate the computation of conditionally free and conditionally monotone multiplicative convolutions involving operator-valued non-commutative distributions.

Abstract:In an infinitesimal probability space we consider operators which are infinitesimally free and one of which is infinitesimal, in that all its moments vanish. Many previously analysed random matrix models are captured by this framework. We show that there is a simple way of finding non-commutative distributions involving infinitesimal operators and apply this to the commutator and anticommutator. We show the joint infinitesimal distribution of an operator and an infinitesimal idempotent gives us the Boolean cumulants of the given operator. We also show that Boolean cumulants can be expressed as infinitesimal moments thus giving matrix models which exhibit asymptotic Boolean independence and monotone independence. Finally we demonstrate a connection to the Markov-Krein transform.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the effectiveness of almost purely operational methods in the study of umbral calculus. To accomplish this goal, we systematically reconstruct the theory operationally, offering new proofs and results throughout. Our approach is applied to the study of invertible power series, where we notably offer a concise two-line proof of Lagrange's inversion theorem, derive formulas for both fractional and regular compositional iterates and generalize Jabotinsky matrices. In addition, we will develop several new insights into umbral operators, including their fractional exponents and novel expressions, in connection with the previously discussed applications. Finally, we will elaborate on both established and new concepts and examples, such as pseudoinverses of delta operators and a natural generalization of the Laguerre polynomials.

Abstract:We use here a recent idea of studying functions of free random variables using Boolean cumulants. We develop idea of explicit calculations of conditional expectation using Boolean cumulants. We demonstrate Boolean cumulants approach allows to calculate explicitly some conditional expectations of functions in free random variables. We present how Boolean cumulants together with subordination simplify proofs of some results which are known in research literature.

Abstract:In this article, we characterize convexity in terms of algebras over a PROP, and establish a tensor-product-like symmetric monoidal structure on the category of convex sets. Using these two structures, and the theory of $\scr{O}$-monoidal categories, we state and prove a Grothendieck construction for lax $\scr{O}$-monoidal functors into convex sets. We apply this construction to the categorical characterization of entropy of Baez, Fritz, and Leinster, and to the study of quantum contextuality in the framework of simplicial distributions.

Abstract:Free probabilistic considerations of type B first appeared in a paper by Biane, Goodman and Nica in 2003. Recently, connections between type B and infinitesimal free probability were put into evidence by Belinschi and Shlyakhtenko (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0903.2721" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0903.2721">arXiv:0903.2721</a>). The interplay between "type B" and "infinitesimal" is also the object of the present paper. We study infinitesimal freeness for a family of unital subalgebras A_1, ..., A_k in an infinitesimal noncommutative probability space (A, phi, phi'), and we introduce a concept of infinitesimal non-crossing cumulant functionals for (A, phi, phi'), obtained by taking a formal derivative in the formula for usual non-crossing cumulants. We prove that the infinitesimal freeness of A_1, ... A_k is equivalent to a vanishing condition for mixed cumulants; this gives the infinitesimal counterpart for a theorem of Speicher from "usual" free probability. We show that the lattices of non-crossing partitions of type B appear in the combinatorial study of (A, phi, phi'), in the formulas for infinitesimal cumulants and when describing alternating products of infinitesimally free random variables. As an application of alternating free products, we observe the infinitesimal analogue for the well-known fact that freeness is preserved under compression with a free projection. As another application, we observe the infinitesimal analogue for a well-known procedure used to construct free families of free Poisson elements. Finally, we discuss situations when the freeness of A_1, ..., A_k in (A, phi) can be naturally upgraded to infinitesimal freeness in (A, phi, phi'), for a suitable choice of a "companion functional" phi'.

Abstract:In the context of kernel optimization, we prove a result that yields new factorizations and realizations. Our initial context is that of general positive operator-valued kernels. We further present implications for Hilbert space-valued Gaussian processes, as they arise in applications to dynamics and to machine learning. Further applications are given in non-commutative probability theory, including a new non-commutative Radon--Nikodym theorem.

Abstract:We develop the relevant combinatorics pertaining to cyclic-conditional freeness in order to introduce the adequate sets of cumulants linearizing the cyclic-conditional additive convolution. On our way, we introduce a new non-commutative independence, cyclic freeness. We explain how cyclic-conditional freeness is "reduced" to cyclic freeness by utilizing a multivariate extension of the inverse Markov-Krein transform. We also consider cyclic-conditional multiplicative convolution and prove limit theorems.
