Abstract:It is well-known that free independence is equivalent to the vanishing of mixed free cumulants. The purpose of this short note is to build free products of $*$-probability spaces using this as the definition of freeness and relying on free cumulants instead of moments.

Abstract:Free probabilistic considerations of type B first appeared in a paper by Biane, Goodman and Nica in 2003. Recently, connections between type B and infinitesimal free probability were put into evidence by Belinschi and Shlyakhtenko (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0903.2721" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0903.2721">arXiv:0903.2721</a>). The interplay between "type B" and "infinitesimal" is also the object of the present paper. We study infinitesimal freeness for a family of unital subalgebras A_1, ..., A_k in an infinitesimal noncommutative probability space (A, phi, phi'), and we introduce a concept of infinitesimal non-crossing cumulant functionals for (A, phi, phi'), obtained by taking a formal derivative in the formula for usual non-crossing cumulants. We prove that the infinitesimal freeness of A_1, ... A_k is equivalent to a vanishing condition for mixed cumulants; this gives the infinitesimal counterpart for a theorem of Speicher from "usual" free probability. We show that the lattices of non-crossing partitions of type B appear in the combinatorial study of (A, phi, phi'), in the formulas for infinitesimal cumulants and when describing alternating products of infinitesimally free random variables. As an application of alternating free products, we observe the infinitesimal analogue for the well-known fact that freeness is preserved under compression with a free projection. As another application, we observe the infinitesimal analogue for a well-known procedure used to construct free families of free Poisson elements. Finally, we discuss situations when the freeness of A_1, ..., A_k in (A, phi) can be naturally upgraded to infinitesimal freeness in (A, phi, phi'), for a suitable choice of a "companion functional" phi'.

Abstract:We derive a formula for expressing free cumulants whose entries are products of random variables in terms of the lattice structure of non-crossing partitions. We show the usefulness of that result by giving direct and conceptually simple proofs for a lot of results about R-diagonal elements. Our investigations do not assume the trace property for the considered linear functionals.

Finite Free Cumulants: Multiplicative Convolutions, Genus Expansion and Infinitesimal Distributions

Abstract:Given two polynomials $p(x), q(x)$ of degree $d$, we give a combinatorial formula for the finite free cumulants of $p(x)\boxtimes_d q(x)$. We show that this formula admits a topological expansion in terms of non-crossing multi-annular permutations on surfaces of different genera. This topological expansion, on the one hand, deepens the connection between the theories of finite free probability and free probability, and in particular proves that $\boxtimes_d$ converges to $\boxtimes$ as $d$ goes to infinity. On the other hand, borrowing tools from the theory of second order freeness, we use our expansion to study the infinitesimal distribution of certain families of polynomials which include Hermite and Laguerre, and draw some connections with the theory of infinitesimal distributions for real random matrices. Finally, building off our results we give a new short and conceptual proof of a recent result [Steinerberger (2020), Hoskins and Kabluchko (2020)] that connects root distributions of polynomial derivatives with free fractional convolution powers.

Functional relations for higher-order free cumulants

Abstract:We establish the functional relations between generating series of higher-order free cumulants and moments in higher-order free probability, solving an open problem posed fifteen years ago by Collins, Mingo, Śniady and Speicher. We propose an extension of free probability theory, which governs the all-order topological expansion in unitarily invariant matrix ensembles, with a corresponding notion of free cumulants and give as well their relation to moments via functional relations. Our approach is based on the study of a master transformation involving double monotone Hurwitz numbers via semi-infinite wedge techniques, building on the recent advances of the last-named author with Bychkov, Dunin-Barkowski and Kazarian. We illustrate our formulas by computing the first few decaying terms of the correlation functions of an ensemble of spiked GUE matrices, going beyond the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem.

Abstract:We present a product of pairs of pointed Hilbert spaces that, in the context of Bozėjko, Leinert and Speicher's theory of conditionally free probability, plays the role of the reduced free product of pointed Hilbert spaces, and thus gives a unified construction for the natural notions of independence defined by Muraki. We additionally provide important applications of this construction. We prove that, assuming minor restrictions, for any pair of conditionally free algebras there are copies of them that are conditionally free and also free, a property that is frequently assumed (as hypothesis) to prove several results in the literature. Finally, we give a short proof of the linearization property of the $^cR$-transform (the analog of Voiculescu's $R$-transform in the context of conditionally free probability).

Abstract:Abstract Cumulants are a notion that comes from the classical probability theory; they are an alternative to a notion of moments. We adapt the probabilistic concept of cumulants to the setup of a linear space equipped with two multiplication structures. We present an algebraic formula which involves those two multiplications as a sum of products of cumulants. In our approach, beside cumulants, we make use of standard combinatorial tools as forests and their colourings. We also show that the resulting statement can be understood as an analogue of Leonov–Shiryaev’s formula. This purely combinatorial presentation leads to some conclusions about structure constant of Jack characters.

Tapered semiconductor amplifiers for optical frequency combs in the near infrared

Abstract:A tapered semiconductor amplifier is injection seeded by a femtosecond optical frequency comb at 780 nm from a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. Energy gains over 17 dB (12 dB) are obtained for 1 mW (20 mW) of average input power when the input pulses are stretched into the picosecond range. A spectral window of supercontinuum light generated in a photonic fiber has also been amplified. Interferometric measurements show sub-hertz linewidths for a heterodyne beat between the input and amplified comb components, yielding no detectable phase-noise degradation under amplification. These amplifiers can be used to boost the infrared power in f-to-2f interferometers used to determine the carrier-to-envelope offset frequency, with clear advantages for stabilization of octave-spanning femtosecond lasers and other supercontinuum light sources with very limited power in the infrared.

Abstract:We use here a recent idea of studying functions of free random variables using Boolean cumulants. We develop idea of explicit calculations of conditional expectation using Boolean cumulants. We demonstrate Boolean cumulants approach allows to calculate explicitly some conditional expectations of functions in free random variables. We present how Boolean cumulants together with subordination simplify proofs of some results which are known in research literature.

Abstract:Free cumulants are multilinear functionals defined in terms of the moment functional with the use of the family of lattices of noncrossing partitions. In the univariate case, they can be identified with the coefficients of the Voiculescu transform of the moment functional which plays a role similar to that of the logarithm of the Fourier transform. The associated linearization property is connected with free independence. In turn, the family of much smaller lattices of interval partitions is used to define Boolean cumulants connected with Boolean independence. In order to bridge the gap between these two families of lattices and the associated cumulants we introduce and study the family of lattices of noncrossing partitions adapted to Motzkin paths and define the associated operator-valued `Motzkin cumulants'. We prove the corresponding Möbius inversion formula which plays the role of a lattice refinement of the formula expressing free cumulants in terms of Boolean cumulants. We apply this concept to free probability and obtain the additive decomposition of free cumulants in terms of scalar-valued counterparts of Motzkin cumulants.

We prove characterization of free-Kummer and free Poisson distributions by freeness properties together with some assumptions about conditional moments. Our main tools are subordination of free multiplicative convolution and Boolean cumulants.

Abstract:We prove a multidimensional Poisson limit theorem in free probability, and define joint free Poisson distributions in a non-commutative probability space. We define (compound) free Poisson process explicitly, similar to the definitions of (compound) Poisson processes in classical probability. We proved that the sum of finitely many freely independent compound free Poisson processes is a compound free Poisson processes. We give a step by step procedure for constructing a (compound) free Poisson process. A Karhunen-Loeve expansion theorem for centered free Poisson processes is proved. We generalize free Poisson processes to a notion of free Poisson random measures (which is slightly different from the previously defined ones in free probability, but more like an analogue of classical Poisson random measures). Then we develop the integration theory of real-valued functions with respect to a free Poisson random measure, generalizing the classical integration theory to the free probability case. We find that the integral of a function (in certain spaces of functions) with respect to a free Poisson random measure has a compound free Poisson distribution. For centered free Poisson random measures, we can get a simpler and more beautiful integration theory.

Free cumulants and freeness for unitarily invariant random tensors

Abstract:We address the question of the asymptotic description of random tensors that are local unitary invariant, that is, invariant by conjugation by tensor products of (independent) unitary matrices. We consider both the case of an invariant random tensor with $D$ inputs and $D$ outputs, called mixed, and the case where there is a factorization between the inputs and outputs, called pure, and which includes the random tensor models that have been extensively studied in the physics literature (we provide a short review of these results). The finite size and asymptotic moments are defined in terms of the correlations of certain invariant polynomials called trace-invariants, encoded by $D$-uplets of permutations, up to relabelling equivalence. Using the unitary invariance, we define a notion of finite free cumulants associated to the expectations of these trace-invariants, through invertible finite size moment-cumulants formulas. In order to characterize the asymptotic distributions at first order, two important classes of random tensors are considered: pure random tensors that scale like a pure complex Gaussian, and mixed random tensors that scale like a Wishart tensor. In both cases, we derive a notion of free cumulants associated to the first order trace-invariants, through closed moment-cumulant formulas, which involve $D$ independent summations over non-crossing permutations. While the formulas involve the same combinatorics, the asymptotic distributions differ by the class of invariants that define the distribution at first order. Both in the pure and in the mixed case, the first order free-cumulants of a sum of two independent random tensors are shown to be additive. A preliminary discussion of the higher orders is provided. Finally, tensor freeness is then defined (at first order) as the vanishing of mixed free cumulants associated to first order trace-invariants.

Abstract:For a family of unital free *-algebras with a family of states on them, we construct a sequence of noncommutative probability spaces, which are tensor product algebras with tensor product states and which approximate the free product of states in the sense of convergence of mixed moments to those of free random variables. The constructed sequence of noncommutative probability spaces is called the hierarchy of freeness with the corresponding states called m-free products of states. The first-order approximation corresponding to m=1 gives the Boolean product of states. Thus the product states for the main types of noncommutative independence can be obtained from tensor products of states. Therefore, this approach can be viewed as a unification of independence. We also show how to associate a cocommutative *-bialgebra with the m-free product of states. This approach is developed in the paper for the more general case of the conditionally free product of states and can be easily extended to families of sequences of states.

Abstract:We discuss free probability theory and free harmonic analysis from a categorical perspective. In order to do so, we extend first the set of analytic convolutions and operations and then show that the comonadic structure governing free probability is isomorphic to several well-known categories of algebras, such as, e.g., Witt vectors, differential algebras, etc. Within this framework moment-cumulant formulae are shown to correspond to natural transformations and not to be exclusive to probability theories. Finally, we start to discuss free probability and in particular free harmonic analysis from the point of view of algebraic theories and operads.

Abstract:Motivated by the $(q,\gamma)$-cumulants, introduced by Xu [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2303.13812" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.13812">arXiv:2303.13812</a>] to study $\beta$-deformed singular values of random matrices, we define the $(n,d)$-rectangular cumulants for polynomials of degree $d$ and prove several moment-cumulant formulas by elementary algebraic manipulations; the proof naturally leads to quantum analogues of the formulas. We further show that the $(n,d)$-rectangular cumulants linearize the $(n,d)$-rectangular convolution from Finite Free Probability and that they converge to the $q$-rectangular free cumulants from Free Probability in the regime where $d\to\infty$, $1+n/d\to q\in[1,\infty)$. As an application, we employ our formulas to study limits of symmetric empirical root distributions of sequences of polynomials with nonnegative roots. One of our results is akin to a theorem of Kabluchko [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2203.05533" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.05533">arXiv:2203.05533</a>] and shows that applying the operator $\exp(-\frac{s^2}{n}x^{-n}D_xx^{n+1}D_x)$, where $s>0$, asymptotically amounts to taking the rectangular free convolution with the rectangular Gaussian distribution of variance $qs^2/(q-1)$.

Abstract:We provide a refined combinatorial identity for the set of partitions of $\{1,\dots, n\}$, which plays an important role in investigating several limit theorems related to finite free convolutions. Firstly, we present the finite free analogue of Sakuma and Yoshida's limit theorem. That is, we provide the limit of $\{D_{1/m}((p_d^{\boxtimes_d m})^{\boxplus_d m})\}_{m\in \mathbb{N}}$ as $m\rightarrow\infty$ in two cases: (i) $m/d\rightarrow t$ for some $t>0$, or (ii) $m/d\rightarrow0$. The second application presents a central limit theorem for finite free multiplicative convolution. We establish a connection between this theorem and the multiplicative free semicircular distributions through combinatorial identities. Our last result gives alternative proofs for Kabluchko's limit theorems concerning the unitary Hermite and the Laguerre polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, a connection between bi-free probability and the asymptotics of random quantum channels and tensor products of random matrices is established. Using bi-free matrix models, it is demonstrated that the spectral distribution of certain self-adjoint quantum channels and tensor products of random matrices tend to a distribution that can be obtained by an averaged sum of products of bi-freely independent pairs. Subsequently, using bi-free techniques, a Central Limit Theorem for such operator is established.

Abstract:We develop the relevant combinatorics pertaining to cyclic-conditional freeness in order to introduce the adequate sets of cumulants linearizing the cyclic-conditional additive convolution. On our way, we introduce a new non-commutative independence, cyclic freeness. We explain how cyclic-conditional freeness is "reduced" to cyclic freeness by utilizing a multivariate extension of the inverse Markov-Krein transform. We also consider cyclic-conditional multiplicative convolution and prove limit theorems.
