Abstract:We propose a modification of Maxwell's macroscopic fundamental set of equations in vacuum in order to clarify Faraday's law of induction. Using this procedure, the Lorentz force is no longer separate from Maxwell's equations. The Lorentz transformations are shown to be related to the convective derivative, which is introduced in the electrodynamics of moving bodies. The new formulation is in complete agreement with the actual set of Maxwell's equations for bodies at rest, the only novel feature is a new kind of electromotive force. Heinrich Hertz was the first to propose a similar electrodynamic theory of moving bodies, although its interpretation was based on the existence of the so called "aether". Examining the problem of a moving circuit with this procedure, it is shown that a new force of induction should act on a circuit moving through an inhomogeneous vector potential field. This overlooked induction force is related to the Aharanov-Bohm effect, but can also be related to the classical electromagnetic field when an external magnetic field is acting on the system. Technological issues, such as the so called Marinov motor are also addressed.

Abstract:A new iterative method for computing three-dimensional steady-state magnetic fields with eddy currents is presented. By using the proposed method, the numerical computation of eddy current fields can be divided into two successive stages on flux density and eddy current calculations. The convergent field solution is then obtained iteratively. The coefficient matrices arising from the proposed method contain relatively few variables and are real. As these matrices need to be eliminated only once in the iteration procedure, the requirement upon the computer resource can be reduced substantially. The convergence of the presented iterative method is also discussed in detail. The instructions for choosing the penalty factor and relaxation factor in order to obtain the globally convergent potentials with sufficiently accurate field solutions are also given. Some sample calculations show that the new iterative method is highly computationally efficient for studying large-scale unbounded eddy-current problems in engineering.

Abstract:A simple model of eddy currents in which current is computed solely from magnetic forces acting on electrons proves accessible to introductory students and gives a good qualitative account of eddy current forces. However, this model cannot be complete; it ignores the electric fields that drive current outside regions of significant magnetic field. In this paper we show how to extend the model to obtain a boundary value problem for current density. Solution of this problem in polar coordinates shows that the electric field significantly affects the quantitative results and presents an exercise suitable for upper division students. We apply elliptic cylindrical coordinates to generalize the result and offer an exercise useful for teaching graduate students how to use non-standard coordinate systems.

A space-time finite element method for the eddy current approximation of rotating electric machines

Abstract:In this paper we formulate and analyze a space-time finite element method for the numerical simulation of rotating electric machines where the finite element mesh is fixed in space-time domain. Based on the Babuška--Nečas theory we prove unique solvability both for the continuous variational formulation and for a standard Galerkin finite element discretization in the space-time domain. This approach allows for an adaptive resolution of the solution both in space and time, but it requires the solution of the overall system of algebraic equations. While the use of parallel solution algorithms seems to be mandatory, this also allows for a parallelization simultaneously in space and time. This approach is used for the eddy current approximation of the Maxwell equations which results in an elliptic-parabolic interface problem. Numerical results for linear and nonlinear constitutive material relations confirm the applicability, efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approach.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the finite element approximation of Maxwell's problem and analyse the prescription of essential boundary conditions in a weak sense using Nitsche's method. To avoid indefiniteness of the problem, the original equations are augmented with the gradient of a scalar field that allows one to impose the zero divergence of the magnetic induction, even if the exact solution for this scalar field is zero. Two finite element approximations are considered, namely, one in which the approximation spaces are assumed to satisfy the appropriate inf-sup condition that render the standard Galerkin method stable, and another augmented and stabilised one that permits the use of finite element interpolations of arbitrary order. Stability and convergence results are provided for the two finite element formulations considered.

Abstract:To alleviate the excessive computation burden of numerical methods such as finite element analysis when they are used to solve high frequency three-dimensional (3D) eddy current problems, a novel iterative procedure to deal with rotationally symmetric boundary conditions is proposed in this paper. Numerical results on computations of 3D eddy current fields of a cold crucible are reported to demonstrate the robustness and feasibility as well as the merits of the proposed algorithm for solving practical 3D eddy current problems.

Abstract:We present the mathematical theory and its numerical validation of a method tailored to include eddy-current effects only in a part of the domain. This results in a heterogeneous problem combining an eddy-current model in a subset of the computational domain with a magneto-static model in the remainder of the domain. We adopt a two-domain two-step approach in which the primary variables of the problem are the electric scalar potential and the magnetic vector potential. We show numerical results that validate the formulation.

Abstract:We prove that the time-harmonic solutions to Maxwell's equations in a three-dimensional exterior domain converge to a certain static solution as the frequency tends to zero. We work in weighted Sobolev spaces and construct new compactly supported replacements for Dirichlet--Neumann fields. Moreover, we even show convergence in operator norm.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to investigate the well-posedness, stability and convergence of solutions to the time-dependent Maxwell's equations for electric field in conductive media in continuous and discrete settings. The situation we consider would represent a physical problem where a subdomain is emerged in a homogeneous medium, characterized by constant dielectric permittivity and conductivity functions. It is well known that in these homogeneous regions the solution to the Maxwell's equations also solves the wave equation which makes calculations very efficient. In this way our problem can be considered as a coupling problem for which we derive stability and convergence analysis. A number of numerical examples validate theoretical convergence rates of the proposed stabilized explicit finite element scheme.

An Analytic Model for Eddy Current Separation

Abstract:Eddy current separation (ECS) is a process used throughout the scrap recycling industry for separating nonferrous metals from nonmetallic fluff. To date, however, the physical theory of ECS has generally been limited to empirical approximations and numerical simulations. We therefore introduce a simplified, two-dimensional model for ECS based on a cylindrical array of permanent, alternating magnets. The result is a Fourier-series expansion that describes the total magnetic field profile over all space. If the magnets are then rotated with constant angular velocity, the magnetic fields vary as a discrete series of sinusoidal harmonics, thereby inducing electrical eddy currents in nearby conductive particles. Force and torque calculations can then be used to predict the corresponding kinematic trajectories.

Independence of Maxwell's equations: A Bäcklund-transformation view

Abstract:It is now widely accepted that the Maxwell equations of Electrodynamics constitute a self-consistent set of four independent partial differential equations. According to a certain school of thought, however, half of these equations - namely, those expressing the two Gauss' laws for the electric and the magnetic field - are redundant since they can be "derived" from the remaining two laws and the principle of conservation of charge. The status of the latter principle is thus elevated to a law of Nature more fundamental than, say, Coulomb's law. In this note we examine this line of reasoning and we propose an approach according to which the Maxwell equations may be viewed as a Backlund transformation relating fields and sources. The conservation of charge and the electromagnetic wave equations then simply express the integrability conditions of this transformation.

Abstract:We develop an adaptive finite element method for solving the eddy current model with voltage excitations for complicated three-dimensional structures. The mathematical model is based on the $\mathbf{A}-\phi$ formulation whose well-posedness is established. We derive the a posteriori error estimate for the finite element approximation of the model whose solution is not unique in the nonconducting region. Numerical experiments that illustrate the competitive behavior of the proposed method are provided.

Abstract:Nonlocal models are widely used for approximating kinetic effects on electron heat flow in fusion-relevant plasmas. Almost universally, such models have no explicit time dependence and are designed to make heat flow predictions based directly on instantaneous profiles of macroscopic plasma parameters. While this is usually justified by the claim that transient effects fade before temperature profiles evolve appreciably, a more rigorous justification of the stationarity assumption in terms of kinetic theory is desirable. In this Letter, such a justification is provided by demonstrating that nonstationary effects related to the time dependence of the isotropic part of the electron distribution function vanish up to third order in Chapman–Enskog theory (irrespective of ion charge state or presence of magnetic fields). However, it is found that the electron inertia term (whose appearance in Ohm's law stems from the time derivative of the anisotropic part of the electron distribution function) does have a small but finite third order effect that is most prominent for plasmas with low average ion charges. This Letter additionally provides a convenient analytic inverse for the isotropic part of the Landau electron–electron collision operator.

Classical Models of the Electron Spin -- Comparison of the Electric Current Model and the Magnetic Charge Model

Abstract:Ferromagnetic matter finds its microscopic origin in the intrinsic electron spin, which is considered to be a purely quantum mechanical property of the electron. To incorporate the influence of the electron spin in the microscopic and macroscopic Maxwell equations -- and thereby in classical physics -- two models have been utilized: the electric current and the magnetic charge model. This paper aims to highlight fundamental problems of the commonly used current loop model, widely employed in textbooks. This work demonstrates that the behavior of a constant electric current dipole is not described by the laws of classical electrodynamics. More precisely, the electric current model is dependent on external forces, not included in Maxwells field and force equations, in order to maintain the force balance on the electric charge density inside the electron. These external forces change dynamically and do work on the system as the electron interacts with external fields. Consequently, the energies derived from classical physics (gravitational potential energy, kinetic energy, electrodynamic field energy) are not conserved in a system including constant electric current dipoles. In contrast to the electric current model, the magnetic charge model employs separate magnetic charges to model the electron spin, requiring the Maxwell equations to be extended by magnetic sources. This paper intends to illustrate that the magnetic charge model has significant advantages over the electric current model as it needs no external forces and energies, is a closed electromechanical system and is fully modeled by the classical laws of physics. This work forms the basis for the derivation and consideration of equivalent problems in macroscopic systems involving ferromagnetic matter.

Abstract:Using Maxwell's mental imagery of a tube of fluid motion of an imaginary fluid, we derive his equations $\operatorname{curl} \mathbf{E} = -\frac{\partial \mathbf{B}}{\partial t}$, $\operatorname{curl} \mathbf{H} = \frac{\partial \mathbf{D}}{\partial t} + \mathbf{j}$, $\operatorname{div} \mathbf{D} = \varrho$, $\operatorname{div} \mathbf{B} = 0$, which together with the constituting relations $\mathbf{D} = \varepsilon_0 \mathbf{E}$, $\mathbf{B} = \mu_0 \mathbf{H}$, form what we call today Maxwell's equations. Main tools are the divergence, curl and gradient integration theorems and a version of Poincare's lemma formulated in vector calculus notation. Remarks on the history of the development of electrodynamic theory, quotations and references to original and secondary literature complement the paper.
The relation between the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equation and the covariant Hamilton-Jacobi equation for Maxwell's electrodynamics

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to understand the relation between the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equation for Maxwell's electrodynamics, which is an equation with variational derivatives for a functional of field configurations, and the covariant (De Donder-Weyl) Hamilton-Jacobi equation, which is a partial derivative equation on a finite dimensional space of vector potentials and spacetime coordinates. We show that the procedure of spacetime splitting applied to the latter allows us to reproduce both the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equation and the Gauss law constraint in the Hamilton-Jacobi form without a recourse to the canonical Hamiltonian analysis. Our consideration may help to analyze the quasi-classical limit of the connection between the standard quantization in field theory based on the canonical Hamiltonian formalism with a preferred time dimension and the precanonical quantization that uses the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formulation where space and time dimensions treated equally.

Electrodynamics Correlates Knock-on and Knock-off: Current is Spatially Uniform in Ion Channels

Abstract:Ions in channels have been imagined as hard balls in a macroscopic mechanical model, for a very long time. Hard balls interact by collisions in such models, randomly knocking each other on and off `binding' sites in thermal motion. But ions have large charge, and the hard balls of classical models do not. The electrodynamics of charge guarantee strong correlations between the movements of ions on all time scales, even those of atomic scale thermal motion. Correlations are present whenever Maxwell's equations apply, so they are present in individual trajectories, not just averages. Indeed, in a series system like an idealized narrow channel, the correlation is perfect (within the accuracy of Maxwell's equations) because of conservation of total current (that includes Maxwell's displacement current, the ethereal ${\varepsilon }_0{\partial \boldsymbol{\mathrm{E}}}/{\partial t}$).The ethereal component of current prevents spatial variation of total current in a series system. The stochastic complexity of spatial thermal motion disappears for current }in a series system. Total current does not depend on location in a series system like a narrow ion channel on any time scale. Spatial variables are not needed in the description of total current in a one dimensional channel on any time scale, according to the Maxwell equations. Removing the spatial dependence of total current should dramatically simplify theories and simulations, one might imagine.

Abstract:A circuit model consisting of inductance-resistance ladder network to solve the transverse electric eddy-current problems was proposed. The general idea is to divide the region to be solved into a number of eddy shells, which are modeled by a series of coils magnetically coupled with each other. Detailed discussions of the model were made under two special cases where analytical solutions are available. First, it was proved in theory that the limit form of the recursive formula of the circuit model is identical with the Maxwell equations. Next, numerical accuracy of the model was evaluated by making comparison between the circuit solutions and the analytical solutions. It turns out that when the width of each shell is less than the skin depth, the results match the analytical solutions quite well. The proposed circuit model could find its application in the simulation of very fast transient overvoltage mitigation by magnetic rings, where analytical solutions do not exist and other commonly used numerical methods cost too much calculation amount.

Abstract:Maxwell's four differential equations describing electromagnetism are among the most famous equations in science. Feynman said that they provide four of the seven fundamental laws of classical physics. In this paper, we derive Maxwell's equations using a well-established approach for deriving time-dependent differential equations from static laws. The derivation uses the standard Heaviside notation. It assumes conservation of charge and that Coulomb's law of electrostatics and Ampere's law of magnetostatics are both correct as a function of time when they are limited to describing a local system. It is analogous to deriving the differential equation of motion for sound, assuming conservation of mass, Newton's second law of motion and that Hooke's static law of elasticity holds for a system in local equilibrium. This work demonstrates that it is the conservation of charge that couples time-varying E -fields and B -fields and that Faraday's Law can be derived without any relativistic assumptions about Lorentz invariance.
