Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of today's most relevant emergent technologies. In view thereof, this paper proposes that more attention should be paid to the philosophical aspects of AI technology and its use. It is argued that this deficit is generally combined with philosophical misconceptions about the growth of knowledge. To identify these misconceptions, reference is made to the ideas of the philosopher of science Karl Popper and the physicist David Deutsch. The works of both thinkers aim against mistaken theories of knowledge, such as inductivism, empiricism, and instrumentalism. This paper shows that these theories bear similarities to how current AI technology operates. It also shows that these theories are very much alive in the (public) discourse on AI, often called Bayesianism. In line with Popper and Deutsch, it is proposed that all these theories are based on mistaken philosophies of knowledge. This includes an analysis of the implications of these mistaken philosophies for the use of AI in science and society, including some of the likely problem situations that will arise. This paper finally provides a realistic outlook on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and three propositions on A(G)I and philosophy (i.e., epistemology).

Abstract:Artificial intelligence is making extraordinary progress with an unprecedented rate, reaching and surpassing human capabilities in many tasks previously considered unattainable by machines, as language translation, music composition, object detection, medical diagnoses, software programming, and many others. Some people are excited about these results, while others are raising serious concerns for possible negative impacts in our society. This article addresses several questions that are often raised about intelligent machines: Will machines ever surpass human intellectual capacities? What will happen next? What will be the impact in our society? What are the jobs that artificial intelligence puts at risk? Reasoning about these questions is of fundamental importance to predict possible future scenarios and prepare ourselves to face the consequences.

Abstract:This article is dedicated to the problem of the development of artificial intelligence in modern society and its influence on such philosophical disciplines as philosophical anthropology, philosophy of mind and ethics. The article defines the possible content of the term "artificial intelligence", examines the impact of artificial intelligence on the problem of distinguishing intelligent and non-intelligent beings, assesses the possibility of the existence of consciousness outside the human brain, explores options for solving applied ethical problems in the field of AI, searches ways of communication between the humanity and artificial intelligence, assesses the theoretical prospects for organizing an ethical space for intelligent machines of the future. At the end of each topic, the author tries to assess the potential impact of the artificial intelligence development on usual philosophical problems. The work has practical application in teaching a course in philosophy, and theoretical application as a basis for further research in various fields of science and philosophy.

Abstract:This article is the author's review of the singularity in which events in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) are developing. A general view is offered on the role of revolutions in information technology as they expand the human personality. The current stage of personal expansion is considered, covering the last decade, especially 2023. The most important and common socially significant documents expressing concern about AI, as well as those that assert an optimistic view of events, are considered: ethical principles, important directions, requirements, and restrictions. It takes a closer look at the pending European AI Act (AIA) and how different groups are reacting to it. Cultural and historical factors are highlighted that can counteract the negative and catastrophic developments that may result from AI. Possible mechanisms for preserving genuine knowledge among professionals and disseminating it among the general public are analyzed.

Abstract:Rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are generating much controversy in society, often without scientific basis. As occurred the development of other emerging technologies, such as the introduction of electricity in the early 20th century, AI causes both fascination and fear. Following the advice of the philosopher R.W. Emerson's: advice the knowledge is the antidote to fear; this paper seeks to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about AI. To this end, it reflects on the following questions: the origins of AI, its possible future evolution, its ability to show feelings, the associated threats and dangers, and the concept of AI singularity.

The computer machine aims to process repetitive and tedious tasks for humans since its concept was first developed. Whether AI is conscious does not raise unprecedented discussion before the appearance of the concept of machine learning. After it appears, the machine, instead of merely passing in input and generating output, is able to learn while processing the information, which resembles a human's learning process. Therefore, this paper delves into the complex terrain of AI to explore the theoretical possibility of endowing machines with consciousness and addresses the future concerns and potentials of AI. Abstract:Abstract The study of artificial intelligence (AI) has been a continuous endeavor of scientists and engineers for over 65 years. The simple contention is that human-created machines can do more than just labor-intensive work; they can develop human-like intelligence. Being aware or not, AI has penetrated into our daily lives, playing novel roles in industry, healthcare, transportation, education, and many more areas that are close to the general public. AI is believed to be one of the major drives to change socio-economical lives. In another aspect, AI contributes to the advancement of state-of-the-art technologies in many fields of study, as helpful tools for groundbreaking research. However, the prosperity of AI as we witness today was not established smoothly. During the past decades, AI has struggled through historical stages with several winters. Therefore, at this juncture, to enlighten future development, it is time to discuss the past, present, and have an outlook on AI. In this article, we will discuss from a historical perspective how challenges were faced on the path of revolution of both the AI tools and the AI systems. Especially, in addition to the technical development of AI in the short to mid-term, thoughts and insights are also presented regarding the symbiotic relationship of AI and humans in the long run.
Challenging the Boundary between Self-Awareness and Self-Consciousness in AI from the Perspectives of Philosophy

Abstract:With the progression of technology, scientists are dealing with the challenges brought about by the creation of smart AI models designed for actual use. This paper aimed to explore the complex boundary between consciousness and self-awareness in artificial intelligence (AI) systems from a philosophical perspective. Methods - The literature review conducted as part of this study was based on materials obtained from such databases as WOS, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The findings of the study indicated that, in the present day, philosophy is analysing how technological advancements have led to a focus on conceptual frameworks that define consciousness as the capacity of artificial intelligence to identify its functional states. Self-awareness is also being viewed as the ability to reflect and recognise oneself within a larger context. Drawing on the principles of symbolic AI and connectionism, the study considers whether AI can have a form of self-awareness similar to biological entities and how this relates to philosophical debates about consciousness. The study delved into the symbolic representation of knowledge and logical reasoning as tools for AI to achieve a primary form of self-awareness. This is contrasted with a connectionist approach that models the emergent properties of neural networks, suggesting a pathway to more complex forms of self-awareness. The article discussed the limitations and potential of these approaches, including the ethical implications of creating systems that can mimic aspects of human self-awareness and self-concept. By thoroughly examining the current AI technologies and their underlying philosophical principles, the article aims to give a detailed look at the ongoing debate on the cognitive abilities of AI and whether it can move beyond basic self-awareness to a more profound level of self-awareness. The conclusion is that although AI may exhibit behaviours indicative of self-awareness, the subjective experience of self-awareness remains a uniquely human trait, which calls into question the boundary between human and machine cognition.

Abstract:The article examines epistemological, ethical, anthropological, and other aspects of understanding self-learning programs called “neural networks” or “artificial intelligence”. The problematic nature of the latter is addressed in the research by reviewing three dozen studies of the idea of artificial intelligence, which were presented on April 4, 2024, at a joint scientific conference of the Center for Phenomenological Philosophy of the Russian State University for the Humanities and the Sector of Social Epistemology of the Institute of Philosophy, Russian Academy of Sciences. Based on the materials of the conference, this article examines artificial intelligence from the perspective of the history of philosophy and futurist literary images in comparison with human and other conceivable consciousness, both possessing free will as well as lacking it. Another aspect of this research provides an understanding of the problem areas of the theology of artificial intelligence and the place of artificial intelligence in modern theology, as well as providing an analysis of the technical side of the implementation of existing and expected computer systems claiming to be “artificial intelligence”. The conference proved to be an important event for discussing philosophical and ethical issues related to the development of artificial intelligence and provided a platform for further research and understanding of the impact of AI on society and human individuality. Abstract:The object of philosophical research is artificial intelligence. The subject of the study covers the impact of the development of artificial intelligence on a person, on the formation and change of ideas about a person, his nature and essence. But in the study, the emphasis is on the contradictoriness of this impact. The philosophical and anthropological analysis of artificial intelligence is focused on understanding the impact of this technology through the phenomenon of man, human existence and his experience. The article is an attempt to study the problem from different positions, including the question of how to ensure control over the growing "consumption" of artificial intelligence in a variety of ways, as well as what can affect the development of a person himself and how current trends contribute to change or create social and cultural norms, such as the ideas of "roboethics" and ethical responsibility in the creation and use of intelligent machines. The presence of fragmented or insufficiently complete coverage in the study of the presented topic in the works of researchers allows us to set the task of formulating the problem and studying it. It is the need for a comprehensive study that is the idea that initiated this work, which boils down to an attempt to conduct a philosophical and anthropological analysis, identify the shortcomings of the existing situation and determine the prospects. From this position, in the process of research, no materials were found that consider the problem comprehensively, and on the other hand, combine the task of identifying the causes and foundations of these contradictions in order to analyze them from the standpoint of philosophical anthropology, which determines the novelty of the study.

Abstract:Abstract The potential benefits and risks of artificial intelligence technologies have sparked a wide-ranging debate in both academic and public circles. On one hand, there is an urgent call to address the immediate and avoidable challenges associated with these tools, such as accountability, privacy, bias, understandability, and transparency; on the other hand, prominent figures like Geoffrey Hinton and Elon Musk have voiced concerns over the potential rise of Super Artificial Intelligence, whose singularity could pose an existential threat to humanity. Coordinating the efforts of thousands of decentralized entities to prevent such a hypothetical event may seem insurmountable in our intricate and multipolar world. Thus, drawing from both perspectives, this work suggests employing the tools and framework of Stoic philosophy, particularly the concept of the dichotomy of control—focusing on what is within our power. This Stoic principle offers a practical and epistemological approach to managing the complexities of AI, and it encourages individuals to organize their efforts around what they can influence while adapting to the constraints of external factors. Within this framework, the essay found that Stoic wisdom is essential for assessing risks, courage is necessary to face contemporary challenges, and temperance and tranquility are indispensable; and these lessons can inform ongoing public and academic discourse, aiding in the development of more effective policy proposals for aligning Narrow AI and General AI with human values.

Abstract:Since the beginnings of computer technology, researchers have speculated about the possibility of building smart machines that could compete with human intelligence. Given the current pace of advances in artificial intelligence and neural computing, such an evolution seems to be a more concrete possibility. Many people now believe that artificial consciousness is possible and that, in the future, it will emerge in complex computing machines. However, a discussion of artificial consciousness gives rise to several philosophical issues: can computers think or do they just calculate? Is consciousness a human prerogative? Does consciousness depend on the material that comprises the human brain, or can computer hardware replicate consciousness? Answering these questions is difficult because it requires combining information from many disciplines including computer science, neurophysiology, philosophy, and religion. Further, we must consider the influence of science fiction, especially science fiction films, when addressing artificial consciousness. As a product of the human imagination, such works express human desires and fears about future technologies and may influence the course of progress. At a societal level, science fiction simulates future scenarios that can help prepare us for crucial transitions by predicting the consequences of significant technological advances. The paper considers robots in science fiction, the Turing test, computer chess and artificial consciousness.

Abstract:Aims: The purpose of this scientific research is to provide a philosophical interpretation of the positive and negative characteristics of artificial intelligence that have been formed in the scientific and cultural discourse. It is noted that the research objectives are not focused on the usual analysis to determine the pros and cons of artificial intelligence potential. The philosophical interpretation of the status of artificial intelligence is to look for its negative aspects in the advantages and positive aspects in the disadvantages of this potentially global sociocultural phenomenon. Methodology: The study used general scientific, cultural, and philosophical methods. An obvious feature was the philosophical and methodological principle of reversal - the reverse (and in some cases, inverse proportional) interaction between traditional intellectual research activity and innovative artificial intelligence. Results: According to the results of the study, a format for assessing the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence through the prism of dialectical opposition and synergistic interaction is proposed. The model of scientific and philosophical analysis of artificial intelligence is formed by axiological, epistemological, methodological, and ontological characteristics. Scientific Novelty: A promising area of research is the correlation of artificial intelligence tools with innovative social concepts of the new humanistic paradigm. In the modern scientific picture of the world, the status of artificial intelligence is at the stage of worldview verification, so the prospects of this innovation are possible only if it is recognised at the level of public consciousness. Conclusion: Philosophy is called upon to form the value, scientific, cognitive, methodological (and in the future, existential) dimensions of artificial intelligence in the human-dimensional worldview paradigm. The process of forming these constants is possible only if the pros and cons of artificial intelligence in the system of social and individual activity and consciousness are interpreted holistically.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been considered a revolutionary and world-changing science, although it is still a young field and has a long way to go before it can be established as a viable theory. Every day, new knowledge is created at an unthinkable speed, and the Big Data Driven World is already upon us. AI has developed a wide range of theories and software tools that have shown remarkable success in addressing difficult and challenging societal problems. However, the field also faces many challenges and drawbacks that have led some people to view AI with skepticism. One of the main challenges facing AI is the difference between correlation and causation, which plays an important role in AI studies. Additionally, although the term Cybernetics should be a part of AI, it was ignored for many years in AI studies. To address these issues, the Cybernetic Artificial Intelligence (CAI) field has been proposed and analyzed here for the first time. Despite the optimism and enthusiasm surrounding AI, its future may turn out to be a "catastrophic Winter" for the whole world, depending on who controls its development. The only hope for the survival of the planet lies in the quick development of Cybernetic Artificial Intelligence and the Wise Anthropocentric Revolution. The text proposes specific solutions for achieving these two goals. Furthermore, the importance of differentiating between professional/personal ethics and eternal values is highlighted, and their importance in future AI applications is emphasized for solving challenging societal problems. Ultimately, the future of AI heavily depends on accepting certain ethical values.
Challenges for an Ontology of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:Of primary importance in formulating a response to the increasing prevalence and power of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in society are questions of ontology. Questions such as: What "are" these systems? How are they to be regarded? How does an algorithm come to be regarded as an agent? We discuss three factors which hinder discussion and obscure attempts to form a clear ontology of AI: (1) the various and evolving definitions of AI, (2) the tendency for pre-existing technologies to be assimilated and regarded as "normal," and (3) the tendency of human beings to anthropomorphize. This list is not intended as exhaustive, nor is it seen to preclude entirely a clear ontology, however, these challenges are a necessary set of topics for consideration. Each of these factors is seen to present a 'moving target' for discussion, which poses a challenge for both technical specialists and non-practitioners of AI systems development (e.g., philosophers and theologians) to speak meaningfully given that the corpus of AI structures and capabilities evolves at a rapid pace. Finally, we present avenues for moving forward, including opportunities for collaborative synthesis for scholars in philosophy and science.

Abstract:Will artificial intelligence (AI) dethrone the human as the premier exemplar of intelligence? How critical is intelligence to our sense of what matters—to our religious traditions, to our most deeply held beliefs, to our understanding of our place in the cosmos? Recent advances in AI raise serious challenges to our understanding of these and other ultimate questions. It is argued that while current AI systems excel at a kind of calculative rationality, deeper levels of human judgment remain far beyond technical implementation. To understand the situation, though, requires rejecting the traditional framing of the debate in terms of a "human" versus "machine" dialectic. Instead, we need to develop a nuanced map of intelligence's kinds, in terms of which to ask what kinds of intelligence AIs have at the moment and are likely to have in the future, and what kinds people have now and what kinds we are likely to develop in the future.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the history of the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), their current and probable future achievements, and the problems (which have already arisen, but will become even more acute in the future) associated with the development of these technologies and their active introduction in society. The close connection between the development of AI and cognitive science, the penetration of ICT and AI into various fields, in particular the field of health care, is shown. A significant part of the article is devoted to the analysis of the concept of ‘artificial intelligence’, including the definition of generative AI. We analyze recent achievements in the field of Artificial Intelligence, describe the basic models, in particular the Large Linguistic Models (LLM), and forecast the development of AI and the dangers that await us in the coming decades. We identify the forces behind the aspiration to create artificial intelligence, which is increasingly approaching the capabilities of the so-called general/universal AI, and also suggest desirable measures to limit and channel the development of artificial intelligence. The authors emphasize that the threats and dangers of the development of ICT and AI are particularly aggravated by the monopolization of their development by the state, intelligence services, large corporations and those often referred to as globalists. The article forecasts the development of computers, ICT and AI in the coming decades, and also shows the changes in society that will be associated with them. The study consists of two articles. The first, presented below, provides a brief historical overview and characterizes the current situation in the field of ICT and AI, it also analyzes the concepts of artificial intelligence, including generative AI, changes in the understanding of AI related to the emergence of the so-called large language models and related new types of AI programs (ChatGPT). The article discusses the serious problems and dangers associated with the rapid and uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence. The second article, to be published in the next issue of the journal, describes and comments on current assessments of breakthroughs in the field of AI, analyzes various forecasts, and the authors give their own assessments and forecasts of future developments. Particular attention is given to the problems and dangers associated with the rapid and uncontrolled development of AI, the fact that achievements in the field of AI are becoming a powerful means of controlling the population, imposing ideology and choice, influencing the results of elections, and a weapon for undermining security and geopolitical struggle.

Abstract:Release of ChatGPT-4, an internet-based computer program that simulates conversation with human users using Artificial Intelligence (AI) on March 14, 2023 set off a flurry of debates regarding the role and impact of AI on human life. Influential leaders and thinkers from diverse fields have chimed in to offer their views, admonitions, and or recommendations. There seems to be a great diversity in viewpoints and visions regarding how AI would affect human destiny-right from confident optimism to stark doomsaying and all in between. However, not much attention is being paid to the insidious long-term effects on human societies, many of them being unintended consequences, that AI has the potential to create over a short period of time. Perhaps the greatest threat of AI is the potential for loss of meaning in life and human-technology-created enfeeblement in a large section of humanity. All the other threats including that of the current AI are mere epiphenomena of this basic threat. In view of the fact that the genie of AI is out of the bottle and that it cannot be put back in, the first order of business for technologists, policy makers, and the governments is to allocate resources and attention to address the problem of meaning in life and mitigation of the sentiment of overwhelming and universal helplessness. Lastly, not to be optimistic about AI while being cautious and pragmatic is not an option.
