Abstract:Pointing out the incompleteness of conventional macroscopic Maxwell equations (M-eqs.), we propose a new form derived from the long wavelength approximation (LWA) of microscopic nonlocal response. From the general Hamilonian of matter and matter-EM field interaction (containing spin dependent terms due to relativistic correction), we first set up the simultaneous equations for microscopic "vector potential $\Vec{A}$ and induced current density $\Vec{I}$", and then extract the macroscopic components by applying LWA. This leads to new macroscopic M-eqs. with a single macroscopic susceptibility $\chi_{\rm em}(\Vec{k}, \omega)$ between $\Vec{I}$ and $\Vec{A}$, which describes both electric and magnetic polarizations and their mutual interference in its fully quantum mechanical expression. In the absence of chirality and under the condition to use magnetic susceptibility defined with respect to $\Vec{B}$, this scheme is shown to be equivalent to the conventional "$\epsilon$ and $\mu$ scheme". In the case of chiral symmetry, the phenomenological constitutive equations by Drude, Born and Fedorov cannot be justified by this microscopic approach. As a single susceptibility scheme of macroscopic M-eqs., this result is on an advanced level by its fully quantum mechanical description of the whole set of $O(k^0)$, $O(k^1)$ and $O(k^2)$ terms of susceptibility providing a consistent picture of such a scheme.

Abstract:We derive an alternative formulation of the field equations for macroscopic electromagnetic fields in a linear magneto-dielectric medium as an identity of the Maxwell--Minkowski equations, complementing a variety of other representations including the Ampère, Chu, Lorentz, and Minkowski formulations of continuum electrodynamics. In the new formulation of the macroscopic field equations, the material properties are carried as a renormalization of the temporal and spatial coordinates instead of as independent material constants. The new representation of the field equations raises some interesting physical issues with relativity and boundary conditions.

Abstract:The resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations as usually defined in the quasineutral approximation refer to a system of 14 scalar equations in 14 scalar variables, hence are determined to be complete and soluble. These equations are a combination of Navier-Stokes and a subset of Maxwell's. However, one of the vector equations is actually an identity when viewed from the potential formulation of electrodynamics, hence does not determine any degrees of freedom. Only by reinstating Gauss's law does the system of equations become closed, allowing for the determination of both the current and mass flow velocity from the equations of motion. Results of a typical analysis of the proposed electromagnetic hydrodynamic model including the magnetization force are presented.

Abstract:This work, that is devoted to the memory of Dr. Andrew Chubykalo and his legacy, is the improved version of the paper published in Annales de la Fondation Louis de Broglie journal. In this article, methods for solving the Maxwell equations are analyzed. First, a method based on the direct differentiation of Maxwell's equations and their reduction to the wave equation for an electric field is considered in detail. It is shown that this method cannot give a closed-form solution that does not contain integrals. The other method, which is most often used by scientists, is based on the introduction of auxiliary quantities such as electromagnetic potentials. But rewriting the Maxwell equations via potentials requires the introduction of an additional constraint - the gauge condition. Some analysis of the expressions for the electric field obtained in two gauges, Coulomb and Lorenz gauges, shows that, contrary to the generally accepted opinion that expressions for the electromagnetic field should be identical in any gauge, the final expressions for the electric field differ in different gauges. Consequently, the uniqueness of the solution of the Maxwell equations is absent.

Abstract:We begin by reviewing the derivation of generalized Maxwell equations from an operational definition of the electromagnetic field and the most basic notions of what constitutes a dynamical field theory. These equations encompass the familiar Maxwell equations as a special case but, in other cases, can predict birefringence, charge non-conservation, wave damping and other effects that the familiar Maxwell equations do not. It follows that observational constraints on such effects can restrict the dynamics of the electromagnetic field to be very like the familiar Maxwellian dynamics, thus, providing an empirical foundation for the Maxwell equations. We discuss some specific observational results that contribute to that foundation.
How the magnetic field behaves during the motion of a highly conducting fluid under its own gravity--A new theoretical, relativistic approach

Abstract:Within the context of general relativity we study in a fully covariant way the so-called Euler-Maxwell system of equations. In particular, on decomposing the aforementioned system into its 1 temporal and 1 + 2 spatial components at the ideal magnetohydrodynamic limit, we bring it in a simplified form that favors physical insight to the problem of a self-gravitating, magnetized fluid. Of central interest is the decomposition of Faraday's equation which leads to a new general solution governing the evolution of the magnetic field during the motion of the highly conducting fluid. According to the latter relation, the magnetic field generally grows or decays in proportion to the inverse cube law of the scale factor--associated with the continuous contraction or expansion of the fluid's volume respectively. The magnetic field's law of variation, which has remarkable implications for the motion of the whole fluid, is subsequently applied to homogeneous (anisotropic-magnetized) cosmological models--especially to the Bianchi I case--as well as to the study of homogeneous and anisotropic gravitational collapse in a magnetized environment. Concerning the cosmological application, we derive the evolution equations of Bianchi I spacetime permeated by large-scale magnetic fields (these equations reduce to their FRW counterparts at the small/large--scale limit). Also, the compatibility of the new evolution formula for the magnetic field with the standard cosmic nucleosynthesis constraint is examined. As for the application in astrophysics, our results predict that homogeneous gravitational implosion is impeded when the electric Weyl tensor (associated with tidal forces) along the magnetic forcelines overwhelms the magnetic energy density. Lastly, our model denotes that the satisfaction of the aforementioned criterion is ultimately driven into a problem of initial conditions.

Flat-band ferromagnetism in quantum dot superlattices

Abstract:Possibility of flat-band ferromagnetism in quantum dot arrays is theoretically discussed. By using a quantum dot as a building block, quantum dot superlattices are possible. We consider dot arrays on Lieb and kagome lattices known to exhibit flat band ferromagnetism. By performing an exact diagonalization of the Hubbard Hamiltonian, we calculate the energy difference between the ferromagnetic ground state and the paramagnetic excited state, and discuss the stability of the ferromagnetism against the second nearest neighbor transfer. We calculate the dot-size dependence of the energy difference in a dot model and estimate the transition temperature of the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition which is found to be accessible within the present fabrication technology. We point out advantages of semiconductor ferromagnets and suggest other interesting possibilities of electronic properties in quantum dot superlattices.

Abstract:A compressible ideal fluid is governed by Euler's equation of motion and equations of continuity, entropy and vorticity. This system can be reformulated in a form analogous to that of electromagnetism governed by Maxwell's equations with source terms. The vorticity plays the role of magnetic field, while the velocity field plays the part of a vector potential and the enthalpy (of isentropic flows) plays the part of a scalar potential in electromagnetism. The evolution of source terms of fluid Maxwell equations is determined by solving the equations of motion and continuity. The equation of sound waves can be derived from this formulation, where time evolution of the sound source is determined by the equation of motion. The theory of vortex sound of aeroacoustics is included in this formulation. It is remarkable that the forces acting on a point mass moving in a velocity field of an inviscid fluid are analogous in their form to the electric force and Lorentz force in electromagnetism. The significance of the reformulation is interpreted by examples taken from fluid mechanics. This formulation can be extended to viscous fluids without difficulty. The Maxwell-type equations are unchanged by the viscosity effect, although the source terms have additional terms due to viscosities.

Do Maxwell's equations need revision? - A methodological note

Abstract:We propose a modification of Maxwell's macroscopic fundamental set of equations in vacuum in order to clarify Faraday's law of induction. Using this procedure, the Lorentz force is no longer separate from Maxwell's equations. The Lorentz transformations are shown to be related to the convective derivative, which is introduced in the electrodynamics of moving bodies. The new formulation is in complete agreement with the actual set of Maxwell's equations for bodies at rest, the only novel feature is a new kind of electromotive force. Heinrich Hertz was the first to propose a similar electrodynamic theory of moving bodies, although its interpretation was based on the existence of the so called "aether". Examining the problem of a moving circuit with this procedure, it is shown that a new force of induction should act on a circuit moving through an inhomogeneous vector potential field. This overlooked induction force is related to the Aharanov-Bohm effect, but can also be related to the classical electromagnetic field when an external magnetic field is acting on the system. Technological issues, such as the so called Marinov motor are also addressed.

Independence of Maxwell's equations: A Bäcklund-transformation view

Abstract:It is now widely accepted that the Maxwell equations of Electrodynamics constitute a self-consistent set of four independent partial differential equations. According to a certain school of thought, however, half of these equations - namely, those expressing the two Gauss' laws for the electric and the magnetic field - are redundant since they can be "derived" from the remaining two laws and the principle of conservation of charge. The status of the latter principle is thus elevated to a law of Nature more fundamental than, say, Coulomb's law. In this note we examine this line of reasoning and we propose an approach according to which the Maxwell equations may be viewed as a Backlund transformation relating fields and sources. The conservation of charge and the electromagnetic wave equations then simply express the integrability conditions of this transformation.

Abstract:The conflicting arguments given in the discussion forum of Metamaterials 2011 on the possible forms of macroscopic Maxwell equations are lead to a convergence by noting the relationship among the employed material variables for each scheme. The three schemes by Chipouline et al. using (A) standard $\Vec{P}$ and $\Vec{M}$ (Casimir form), (B) generalized electric polarization $\Vec{P}_{LL}$ (Landau-Lifshitz form), (C) generalized magnetic polarization $\Vec{M}_{A}$ (Anapole form) are compared with (D) the present author's scheme using standard current density $\Vec{J}$. From the reversible relations among the transverse components of these vectors, one can easily rewrite one scheme into another. The scheme (D), the only one among the four providing the first-principles expressions of susceptibility and also leading to a non-phenomenological Casimir form in terms of the four generalized susceptibilities between $\{\Vec{P},\Vec{M}\}$ and $\{\Vec{E},\Vec{B}\}$, is concluded to be a more natural form than (B) and (C) as a single susceptibility theory.

Variational derivation and compatible discretizations of the Maxwell-GLM system

Abstract:We present a novel variational derivation of the Maxwell-GLM system, which augments the original vacuum Maxwell equations via a generalized Lagrangian multiplier approach (GLM) by adding two supplementary acoustic subsystems and which was originally introduced by Munz et al. for purely numerical purposes in order to treat the divergence constraints of the magnetic and the electric field in the vacuum Maxwell equations within general-purpose and non-structure-preserving numerical schemes for hyperbolic PDE. Among the many mathematically interesting features of the model are: i) its symmetric hyperbolicity, ii) the extra conservation law for the total energy density and, most importantly, iii) the very peculiar combination of the basic differential operators, since both, curl-curl and div-grad combinations are mixed within this kind of system. A similar mixture of Maxwell-type and acoustic-type subsystems has recently been also forwarded by Buchman et al. in the context of a reformulation of the Einstein field equations of general relativity in terms of tetrads. This motivates our interest in this class of PDE, since the system is by itself very interesting from a mathematical point of view and can therefore serve as useful prototype system for the development of new structure-preserving numerical methods. Up to now, to the best of our knowledge, there exists neither a rigorous variational derivation of this class of hyperbolic PDE systems, nor do exactly energy-conserving and asymptotic-preserving schemes exist for them. The objectives of this paper are to derive the Maxwell-GLM system from an underlying variational principle, show its consistency with Hamiltonian mechanics and special relativity, extend it to the general nonlinear case and to develop new exactly energy-conserving and asymptotic-preserving finite volume schemes for its discretization.

Abstract:In classical treatment of Maxwell equations, the initial and boundary conditions are introduced by mathematical consideration rather than strictly using the Maxwell equations. As a result, the initial and boundary conditions are not logic consistent with the Maxwell equations. In fact, the boundary problem of classical Maxwell equations is not solvable for general cases, if the whole boundary fields are given. This problem is caused by implying the divergence and the curl of a vector have no relations during introducing the boundary condition. This research introduces new ideas and formulations to solve this problem. The research shows that based on Chen S-R decomposition of a rank-two tensor, this logical un-consistency can be discarded and, as a consequence, the classical Maxwell equations are reformulated. According to the reformulated Maxwell equations, the initial condition and boundary condition have global effects. As an example, the London equations for superconductors are deduced.
Maxwell's fluid model of magnetism

Abstract:In 1861, Maxwell derived two of his equations of electromagnetism by modelling a magnetic line of force as a `molecular vortex' in a fluid-like medium. Later, in 1980, Berry and colleagues conducted experiments on a `phase vortex', a wave geometry in a fluid which is analogous to a magnetic line of force and also exhibits behaviour corresponding to the quantisation of magnetic flux. Here we unify these approaches by writing down a solution to the equations of motion for a compressible fluid which behaves in the same way as a magnetic line of force. We then revisit Maxwell's historical inspiration, namely Faraday's 1846 model of light as disturbances in lines of force. Using our unified model, we show that such disturbances resemble photons: they are polarised, absorbed discretely, obey Maxwell's full equations of electromagnetism to first order, and quantitatively reproduce the correlation that is observed in the Bell tests.

Abstract:Extended magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD) is a fluid plasma model generalizing ideal MHD by taking into account the impact of Hall drift effects and the influence of electron inertial effects. XMHD has a Hamiltonian structure which has received over the past ten years a great deal of attention among physicists, and which is embodied by a non canonical Poisson algebra on an infinite-dimensional phase space. XMHD can alternatively be formulated as a nonlinear evolution equation. Our aim here is to investigate the corresponding Cauchy problem. We consider both incompressible and compressible versions of XMHD with, in the latter case, some additional bulk (fluid) viscosity. In this context, we show that XMHD can be recast as a well-posed symmetric hyperbolic-parabolic system implying pseudo-differential operators of order zero acting as coefficients and source terms. Along these lines, we can solve locally in time the associated initial value problems, with moreover a minimal Sobolev regularity. We also explain the emergence and propagation of inertial waves.

A systematic formulation of chiral anomalous magnetohydrodynamics

Abstract:We present a new way of deriving effective theories of dynamical electromagnetic fields in general media. It can be used to give a systematic formulation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with strong magnetic fields, including systems with chiral matter and Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly. We work in the regime in which velocity and temperature fluctuations can be neglected. The resulting chiral anomalous MHD incorporates and generalizes the chiral magnetic effect, the chiral separation effect, the chiral electric separation effect, as well as recently derived strong-field MHD, all in a single coherent framework. At linearized level, the theory predicts that the chiral magnetic wave does not survive dynamical electromagnetic fields. A different chiral wave, to which we refer as the chiral magnetic electric separation wave, emerges as a result of dynamical versions of the chiral electric separation effect and the chiral magnetic effect. We predict its wave velocity. We also introduce a simple, but solvable nonlinear model to explore the fate of the chiral instability.

Abstract:The formulation of a complete theory of classical electromagnetism by Maxwell is one of the milestones of science. The capacity of many-body systems to provide emergent mini-universes with vacua quite distinct from the one we inhabit was only recognized much later. Here, we provide an account of how simple systems of localized spins manage to emulate Maxwell electromagnetism in their low-energy behaviour. They are much less constrained by symmetry considerations than the relativistically invariant electromagnetic vacuum, as their substrate provides a non-relativistic background with even translational invariance broken. They can exhibit rich behaviour not encountered in conventional electromagnetism. This includes the existence of magnetic monopole excitations arising from fractionalization of magnetic dipoles; as well as the capacity of disorder, by generating defects on the lattice scale, to produce novel physics, as exemplified by topological spin glassiness or random Coulomb magnetism. The relation between the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equation and the covariant Hamilton-Jacobi equation for Maxwell's electrodynamics

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to understand the relation between the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equation for Maxwell's electrodynamics, which is an equation with variational derivatives for a functional of field configurations, and the covariant (De Donder-Weyl) Hamilton-Jacobi equation, which is a partial derivative equation on a finite dimensional space of vector potentials and spacetime coordinates. We show that the procedure of spacetime splitting applied to the latter allows us to reproduce both the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equation and the Gauss law constraint in the Hamilton-Jacobi form without a recourse to the canonical Hamiltonian analysis. Our consideration may help to analyze the quasi-classical limit of the connection between the standard quantization in field theory based on the canonical Hamiltonian formalism with a preferred time dimension and the precanonical quantization that uses the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formulation where space and time dimensions treated equally.
