Abstract:We extend the table of Garoufalidis, Le and Zagier concerning conjectural Rogers-Ramanujan type identities for tails of colored Jones polynomials to all alternating knots up to 10 crossings. We then prove these new identities using q-series techniques.

Abstract:This is the first article in a series devoted to the study of the asymptotic expansions of various quantum invariants related to the twist knots. In this paper, by using the saddle point method developed by Ohtsuki, we obtain an asymptotic expansion formula for the colored Jones polynomial of twist knots $\mathcal{K}_p$ with $p\geq 6$ at the root of unity $e^{\frac{2\pi\sqrt{-1}}{N+\frac{1}{2}}}$.

Abstract:The volume conjecture and its generalization state that the series of certain evaluations of the colored Jones polynomials of a knot would grow exponentially and its growth rate would be related to the volume of a three-manifold obtained by Dehn surgery along the knot. In this paper, we show that for the figure-eight knot the series converges in some cases and the limit equals the inverse of its Alexander polynomial.

Abstract:This is the second article in a series devoted to the study of the asymptotic expansions of various quantum invariants related to the twist knots. In this article, following the method and results in \cite{CZ23-1}, we present an asymptotic expansion formula for the colored Jones polynomial of twist knot $\mathcal{K}_p$ with $p\geq 6$ at the root of unity $e^{\frac{2\pi\sqrt{-1}}{N+\frac{1}{M}}}$ with $M\geq 2$. Furthermore, by taking the limit $M\rightarrow +\infty$, we obtain an asymptotic expansion formula for the colored Jones polynomial of twist knots $\mathcal{K}_p$ with $p\geq 6$ at the root of unity $e^{\frac{2\pi\sqrt{-1}}{N}}$.

Abstract:Garoufalidis conjectured a relation between the boundary slopes of a knot and its colored Jones polynomials. According to the conjecture, certain boundary slopes are detected by the sequence of degrees of the colored Jones polynomials. We verify this conjecture for adequate knots, a class that vastly generalizes that of alternating knots.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the $N$-dimensional colored Jones polynomial of the figure-eight knot evaluated at $\exp\bigl((\kappa+2p\piı/N\bigr)$, where $\kappa:=\arccosh(3/2)$ and $p$ is a positive integer. We can prove that it grows exponentially with growth rate determined by the Chern--Simons invariant of an affine representation from the fundamental group of the knot complement to the Lie group $\SL(2;\C)$.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the $N$-dimensional colored Jones polynomial of the figure-eight knot, evaluated at $\exp\bigl((u+2p\pi\sqrt{-1})/N\bigr)$ as $N$ tends to infinity, where $u>\operatorname{arccosh}(3/2)$ is a real number and $p\ge1$ is an integer. It turns out that it corresponds to an $\operatorname{SL}(2;\mathbb{R})$ representation of the fundamental group of the knot complement. Moreover, it defines the adjoint Reidemeister torsion and the Chern--Simons invariant associated with the representation.

Jones polynomials from matrix elements of tangles in a pseudounitary representation

Abstract:In these notes we review the calculation of Jones polynomials using a matrix representation of the braid group and Temperley-Lieb algebra. The pseudounitary representation that we consider allows constructing ``states'' from the group/algebra matrices and compute the knot invariants as matrix elements, rather than traces. In comparison with a more standard way of computing the invariants through traces, the matrix element method is more interesting and complete from the point of view of applications. As a byproduct of the discussion we prove a general formula for pretzel knots.

Abstract:We introduce an invariant of a hyperbolic knot which is a map $\alpha\mapsto \boldsymbol{\Phi}_\alpha(h)$ from $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ to matrices with entries in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}[[h]]$ and with rows and columns indexed by the boundary parabolic ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ representations of the fundamental group of the knot. These matrix invariants have a rich structure: (a) their $(\sigma_0,\sigma_1)$ entry, where $\sigma_0$ is the trivial and $\sigma_1$ the geometric representation, is the power series expansion of the Kashaev invariant of the knot around the root of unity ${\rm e}^{2\pi{\rm i} \alpha}$ as an element of the Habiro ring, and the remaining entries belong to generalized Habiro rings of number fields; (b) the first column is given by the perturbative power series of Dimofte-Garoufalidis; (c) the columns of $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ are fundamental solutions of a linear $q$-difference equation; (d) the matrix defines an ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-cocycle $W_\gamma$ in matrix-valued functions on $\mathbb{Q}$ that conjecturally extends to a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}$ and even to holomorphic functions on suitable complex cut planes, lifting the factorially divergent series $\boldsymbol{\Phi}(h)$ to actual functions. The two invariants $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ and $W_\gamma$ are related by a refined quantum modularity conjecture which we illustrate in detail for the three simplest hyperbolic knots, the $4_1$, $5_2$ and $(-2,3,7)$ pretzel knots. This paper has two sequels, one giving a different realization of our invariant as a matrix of convergent $q$-series with integer coefficients and the other studying its Habiro-like arithmetic properties in more depth.

A recursive relation in the $(2p+1,2)$ torus knot

Abstract:It is known that the colored Jones polynomials of a knot in the 3-dimensional sphere satisfy recursive relations, it is also known that these recursive relations come from recurrence polynomials which have been related, by the AJ conjecture, to the geometry of the knot complement. In this paper we propose a new line of thought, by extending the concept of colored Jones polynomials to knots in the 3-dimensional manifold such as a knot complement, and then examining the case of one particular knot in the complement of the $(2p+1,2)$ torus knot for which an analogous recursive relation exists, and moreover, this relation has an associated recurrence polynomial. Part of our study consists of the writing in the standard basis of the genus two handlebody of two families of skeins in this handlebody.

Abstract:We study systems of $2$-tangle equations which play an important role in the analysis of enzyme actions on DNA strands. We show that every system of framed tangle equations has at most one framed rational solution. Furthermore, we show that the Jones Unknot conjecture implies that if a system of tangle equations has a rational solution then that solution is unique among all $2$-tangles. This result potentially opens a door to a purely topological disproof of the Jones Unknot conjecture. We introduce the notion of the Kauffman bracket ratio $\{T\}_q\in \mathbb Q(q)$ of any $2$-tangle $T$ and we conjecture that for $q=1$ it is the slope of meridionally incompressible surfaces in $D^3-T$. We prove that conjecture for algebraic $T$. We also prove that for rational $T$, the brackets $\{T\}_q$ coincide with the $q$-rationals of Morier-Genoud-Ovsienko. Additionally, we relate systems of tangle equations to the Cosmetic Surgery Conjecture and the Nugatory Crossing Conjecture.

Abstract:We discuss a matrix of periodic holomorphic functions in the upper and lower half-plane which can be obtained from a factorization of an Andersen-Kashaev state integral of a knot complement with remarkable analytic and asymptotic properties that defines a ${\rm PSL}_2({\mathbb Z})$-cocycle on the space of matrix-valued piecewise analytic functions on the real numbers. We identify the corresponding cocycle with the one coming from the Kashaev invariant of a knot (and its matrix-valued extension) via the refined quantum modularity conjecture of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.06645" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.06645">arXiv:2111.06645</a>] and also relate the matrix-valued invariant with the 3D-index of Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov. The cocycle also has an analytic extendability property that leads to the notion of a matrix-valued holomorphic quantum modular form. This is a tale of several independent discoveries, both empirical and theoretical, all illustrated by the three simplest hyperbolic knots.

On geometric bases for quantum A-polynomials of knots

Abstract:A simple geometric way is suggested to derive the Ward identities in the Chern-Simons theory, also known as quantum $A$- and $C$-polynomials for knots. In quasi-classical limit it is closely related to the well publicized augmentation theory and contact geometry. Quantization allows to present it in much simpler terms, what could make these techniques available to a broader audience. To avoid overloading of the presentation, only the case of the colored Jones polynomial for the trefoil knot is considered, though various generalizations are straightforward. Restriction to solely Jones polynomials (rather than full HOMFLY-PT) is related to a serious simplification, provided by the use of Kauffman calculus. Going beyond looks realistic, however it remains a problem, both challenging and promising.

Abstract:We compute the Jones polynomial for a three-parameter family of links, the twisted torus links of the form T((p,q),(2,s)) where p and q are coprime and s is nonzero. When s=2n , these links are the twisted torus knots T(p,q;2,n) . We show that for T(p,q;2,n) , the Jones polynomial is trivial if and only if the knot is trivial.

Abstract:We continue our study of the degree of the colored Jones polynomial under knot cabling started in "Knot Cabling and the Degree of the Colored Jones Polynomial" (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1501.01574" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1501.01574">arXiv:1501.01574</a>). Under certain hypothesis on this degree, we determine how the Jones slopes and the linear term behave under cabling. As an application we verify Garoufalidis' Slope Conjecture and a conjecture of the authors for cables of a two-parameter family of closed 3-braids called 2-fusion knots.

Abstract:The Jones problem is a question whether there is a non-trivial knot with the trivial Jones polynomial in one variable $q$. The answer to this fundamental question is still unknown despite numerous attempts to explore it. In braid presentation the case of 4-strand braids is already open. S. Bigelow showed in 2000 that if the Burau representation for four-strand braids is unfaithful, then there is an infinite number of non-trivial knots with the trivial two-variable HOMFLY-PT polynomial and hence, with the trivial Jones polynomial, since it is obtained from the HOMFLY-PT polynomial by the specialisation of one of the variables $A=q^2$.

A determinant formula of the Jones polynomial for a family of braids

Abstract:In 2012, Cohen, Dasbach, and Russell presented an algorithm to construct a weighted adjacency matrix for a given knot diagram. In the case of pretzel knots, it is shown that after evaluation, the determinant of the matrix recovers the Jones polynomial. Although the Jones polynomial is known to be #P-hard by Jaeger, Vertigan, and Welsh, this presents a class of knots for which the Jones polynomial can be computed in polynomial time by using the determinant. In this paper, we extend these results by recovering the Jones polynomial as the determinant of a weighted adjacency matrix for certain subfamilies of the braid group. Lastly, we compute the Kauffman polynomial of (2,q) torus knots in polynomial time using the balanced overlaid Tait graphs. This is the first known example of generalizing the methodology of Cohen to a class of quantum invariants which cannot be derived from the HOMFLYPT polynomial.

Coloured Jones and Alexander polynomials as topological intersections of cycles in configuration spaces

Abstract:Coloured Jones and Alexander polynomials are sequences of quantum invariants recovering the Jones and Alexander polynomials at the first terms. We show that they can be seen conceptually in the same manner, using topological tools, as intersection pairings in covering spaces between explicit homology classes given by Lagrangian submanifolds. The main result proves that the $N^{th}$ coloured Jones polynomial and $N^{th}$ coloured Alexander polynomial come as different specialisations of an intersection pairing of the same homology classes over two variables, with extra framing corrections in each case. The first corollary explains Bigelow's picture for the Jones polynomial with noodles and forks from the quantum point of view. Secondly, we conclude that the $N^{th}$ coloured Alexander polynomial is a graded intersection pairing in a $ \mathbb Z \oplus \mathbb Z_N$-covering of the configuration space in the punctured disc.
