Abstract:In 2012, Cohen, Dasbach, and Russell presented an algorithm to construct a weighted adjacency matrix for a given knot diagram. In the case of pretzel knots, it is shown that after evaluation, the determinant of the matrix recovers the Jones polynomial. Although the Jones polynomial is known to be #P-hard by Jaeger, Vertigan, and Welsh, this presents a class of knots for which the Jones polynomial can be computed in polynomial time by using the determinant. In this paper, we extend these results by recovering the Jones polynomial as the determinant of a weighted adjacency matrix for certain subfamilies of the braid group. Lastly, we compute the Kauffman polynomial of (2,q) torus knots in polynomial time using the balanced overlaid Tait graphs. This is the first known example of generalizing the methodology of Cohen to a class of quantum invariants which cannot be derived from the HOMFLYPT polynomial.

Abstract:We calculate the twisted Alexander polynomials of $(-2,3,2n+1)$-pretzel knots associated to their holonomy representations. As a corollary, we obtain new supporting evidences of Dunfield, Friedl and Jackson's conjecture, that is, the twisted Alexander polynomials of hyperbolic knots associated to their holonomy representations determine the genus and fiberedness of the knots.

Abstract:We compute the Jones polynomial for a three-parameter family of links, the twisted torus links of the form $T((p,q),(2,s))$ where $p$ and $q$ are coprime and $s$ is nonzero. When $s = 2n$, these links are the twisted torus knots $T(p,q,2,n)$. We show that for $T(p,q,2,n)$, the Jones polynomial is trivial if and only if the knot is trivial.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the $N$-dimensional colored Jones polynomial of the figure-eight knot evaluated at $\exp\bigl((\kappa+2p\piı/N\bigr)$, where $\kappa:=\arccosh(3/2)$ and $p$ is a positive integer. We can prove that it grows exponentially with growth rate determined by the Chern--Simons invariant of an affine representation from the fundamental group of the knot complement to the Lie group $\SL(2;\C)$.

Jones polynomials from matrix elements of tangles in a pseudounitary representation

Abstract:In these notes we review the calculation of Jones polynomials using a matrix representation of the braid group and Temperley-Lieb algebra. The pseudounitary representation that we consider allows constructing ``states'' from the group/algebra matrices and compute the knot invariants as matrix elements, rather than traces. In comparison with a more standard way of computing the invariants through traces, the matrix element method is more interesting and complete from the point of view of applications. As a byproduct of the discussion we prove a general formula for pretzel knots.

On amphichirality of symmetric unions

Abstract:It is still unknown whether there is a nontrivial knot with Jones polynomial equal to that of the unknot. Tanaka shows that if an amphichiral knot is a symmetric union of the unknot with one twist region, then its Jones polynomial is trivial. Hence, he proposes that if any of these knots were nontrivial, a nontrivial knot with trivial Jones polynomial would exist. We first show such a knot is always trivial and hence cannot be used to answer the above question. We then generalize the argument to symmetric unions of any knots and show that if a symmetric union of a knot $J$ with one twist region is amphichiral, then it is the connected sum of $J$ and its mirror image $-J$.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the $N$-dimensional colored Jones polynomial of the figure-eight knot, evaluated at $\exp\bigl((u+2p\pi\sqrt{-1})/N\bigr)$ as $N$ tends to infinity, where $u>\operatorname{arccosh}(3/2)$ is a real number and $p\ge1$ is an integer. It turns out that it corresponds to an $\operatorname{SL}(2;\mathbb{R})$ representation of the fundamental group of the knot complement. Moreover, it defines the adjoint Reidemeister torsion and the Chern--Simons invariant associated with the representation.

Abstract:Garoufalidis conjectured a relation between the boundary slopes of a knot and its colored Jones polynomials. According to the conjecture, certain boundary slopes are detected by the sequence of degrees of the colored Jones polynomials. We verify this conjecture for adequate knots, a class that vastly generalizes that of alternating knots.

Abstract:The Jones problem is a question whether there is a non-trivial knot with the trivial Jones polynomial in one variable $q$. The answer to this fundamental question is still unknown despite numerous attempts to explore it. In braid presentation the case of 4-strand braids is already open. S. Bigelow showed in 2000 that if the Burau representation for four-strand braids is unfaithful, then there is an infinite number of non-trivial knots with the trivial two-variable HOMFLY-PT polynomial and hence, with the trivial Jones polynomial, since it is obtained from the HOMFLY-PT polynomial by the specialisation of one of the variables $A=q^2$.

Abstract:Let $N=2n^2-1$ or $N=n^2+n-1$, for any $n\ge 2$. Let $M=\frac{N-1}{2}$. We construct families of prime knots with Jones polynomials $(-1)^M\sum_{k=-M}^{M} (-1)^kt^k$. Such polynomials have Mahler measure equal to $1$. If $N$ is prime, these are cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_{2N}(t)$, up to some shift in the powers of $t$. Otherwise, they are products of such polynomials, including $\Phi_{2N}(t)$. In particular, all roots of unity $\zeta_{2N}$ occur as roots of Jones polynomials. We also show that some roots of unity cannot be zeros of Jones polynomials.

Abstract:The volume conjecture and its generalization state that the series of certain evaluations of the colored Jones polynomials of a knot would grow exponentially and its growth rate would be related to the volume of a three-manifold obtained by Dehn surgery along the knot. In this paper, we show that for the figure-eight knot the series converges in some cases and the limit equals the inverse of its Alexander polynomial.

Abstract:We provide a new bound on the maximum degree of the Jones polynomial of a positive link with second Jones coefficient equal to $\pm 1$ or $\pm 2$. This builds upon the result of our previous work, in which we found such a bound for positive fibered links. We also show that each of these three bounds obstruct positivity for infinitely many almost-positive diagrams, allowing us to classify infinitely many knots as almost-positive.

Abstract:We investigate coincidences of the (one-variable) Jones polynomial amongst rational knots, what we call `Jones rational coincidences'. We provide moves on the continued fraction expansion of the associated rational which we prove do not change the Jones polynomial and conjecture (based on experimental evidence from all rational knots with determinant $<900$) that these moves are sufficient to generate all Jones rational coincidences. These coincidences are generically not mutants, as is verified by checking the HOMFLYPT polynomial. In the process we give a new formula for the Jones polynomial of a rational knot based on a continued fraction expansion of the associated rational, which has significantly fewer terms than other formulae known to us. The paper is based on the second author's Ph.D. thesis and gives an essentially self-contained account.
