Abstract:Underground miners in Australia are facing continued threats from dust-related diseases. To address these issues, improved knowledge of airflow migration patterns and respirable dust dispersion characteristics within a continuous-miner-driven heading under an exhausting ventilation system is required. Based on site-specific conditions of a development heading in New South Wales, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was constructed and validated with onsite dust monitoring data, where a good agreement was achieved. Three scenarios of coal cutting at the middle, floor and roof positions were considered and simulated, with dust generated at four different sources. The simulation results indicated that the operators on the left-hand-side (LHS) with the extraction duct should be equipped with fit-for-purpose personal protective equipment and stay behind the ventilation duct inlet during coal cutting process, while miners standing at the right-hand-side (RHS) of the continuous miner for roof and rib bolting and machine operating should stay immediately behind the roof and rib bolting rig where dust concentration is relatively low. In addition, an increase in airflow rate through the exhausting ventilation duct or a reduction in the distance from the duct inlet to the heading face assisted in reducing dust levels within the heading, particularly at the LHS of the continuous miners. Finally, compared to the scenario of the current ventilation scheme, an on-board exhausting ventilation system could improve dust removal performance, with dust concentration at the breathing level reducing by approximately 43.6%. This modelling study can advance the understanding of multi-source dust diffusion characteristics in the heading face and provide guidance on dust mitigation, thus improving the health and safety of miners and creating a cleaner underground working environment.

Abstract:Accumulation of float coal dust (FCD) in underground mines is an explosion hazard that affects all underground coal mine workers. While this hazard is addressed by the application of rock dust, inadequate rock dusting practices can leave miners exposed to an explosion risk. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have focused on developing a water curtain that removes FCD from the airstream, thereby reducing the buildup of FCD in mine airways. In this study, the number and spacing of the active sprays in the water curtain were varied to determine the optimal configuration to obtain peak knockdown efficiency (KE) while minimizing water consumption.

Abstract:Control of dust in underground coal mines is critical for mitigating both safety and health hazards. For decades, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has led research to evaluate the effectiveness of various dust control technologies in coal mines. Recent studies have included the evaluation of auxiliary scrubbers to reduce respirable dust downstream of active mining and the use of canopy air curtains (CACs) to reduce respirable dust in key operator positions. While detailed dust characterization was not a focus of such studies, this is a growing area of interest. Using preserved filter samples from three previous NIOSH studies, the current work aims to explore the effect of two different scrubbers (one wet and one dry) and a roof bolter CAC on respirable dust composition and particle size distribution. For this, the preserved filter samples were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis and/or scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray. Results indicate that dust composition was not appreciably affected by either scrubber or the CAC. However, the wet scrubber and CAC appeared to decrease the overall particle size distribution. Such an effect of the dry scrubber was not consistently observed, but this is probably related to the particular sampling location downstream of the scrubber which allowed for significant mixing of the scrubber exhaust and other return air. Aside from the insights gained with respect to the three specific dust control case studies revisited here, this work demonstrates the value of preserved dust samples for follow-up investigation more broadly.

A Laboratory Investigation of Underside Shield Sprays to Improve Dust Control of Longwall Water Spray Systems

Abstract:Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed laboratory testing to improve longwall dust control by examining the use of underside shield sprays in conjunction with the longwall directional spray system. In a field survey of longwall operations, NIOSH researchers observed dust clouds created by the fracturing and spalling of coal immediately upwind of the headgate drum that migrated into the walkway, exposing mining personnel to respirable coal dust. The goal of this research was to create an effective traveling water curtain to prevent this dust from reaching the personnel walkway by redirecting it toward the longwall face. The location, orientation, and pressure of the water sprays were the primary testing parameters examined for minimizing dust exposure in the walkway. Laboratory testing indicates that the use of underside shield sprays on the longwall face may be beneficial toward reducing respirable dust exposure for mining personnel.

Abstract:To reduce the impact of high-concentration RD on the physical and mental health of miners, numerical simulations were conducted on the coupling movement law of airflow-RD under the condition of cutting-advancing support dust sources and the distribution characteristics of the spray field in the mining face based on the computational fluid dynamics theory. Besides, a spatial stereoscopic dust control and removal technology for fully mechanized mining faces were proposed according to the structural characteristics of the shearer and hydraulic supports. The results show that the dust generated by advancing support constantly settles in the process of airflow movement and superimposes with the cutting-induced dust around the front drum to form a high-concentration (the highest concentration exceeding 1000 mg/m 3 ) RD mass (length about 18 m, width about 2.1 m and height about 1.8 m). The droplets sprayed by the novel high-efficiency atomization equipment can cover the area with high concentration of RD, and the concentration of spray droplets is much higher than that of RD, which can effectively realize dust control. After the application of the spatial stereoscopic dust control and removal technology, the average removal rates of TD, RD and coal dust reach 92.9%, 91.7% and 92.3%, respectively. The application of this technology can effectively improve the mining face environment, reduce the incidence of safety accidents and pneumoconiosis and ensure the safety production of coal enterprises and the occupational health of miners.

Abstract:In the confined spaces of underground mines, the exposure of over 10,000 miners in the U.S. to diesel exhaust and diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational inevitability, particularly in metal and nonmetal mineral extraction. These workers routinely operate amidst diesel-powered equipment, often outdated and highly polluting, extracting resources such as limestone, gold, and salt. The acute health effects of such exposure are significant, leading to symptoms like headaches and flu-like conditions, with the impact being more pronounced in these closed work environments. This review scrutinizes DPM's hazard in the mining sector, consolidating the extant knowledge and exploring ongoing research. It encapsulates our understanding of DPM's physicochemical properties, existing sampling methods, health ramifications, and mitigation technologies. Moreover, it underscores the necessity for further study in areas such as the evolution of DPM's physicochemical attributes, from its genesis at high-pressure, high-temperature conditions within diesel engines to its emission into the mine atmosphere. A key research gap is the intricate interaction of DPM with specific characteristics of the mine environment—such as relative humidity, ambient temperature, the presence of other mineral dust, and the dynamics of ventilation air. These factors can significantly alter the physicochemical profile of DPM, influencing both its in-mine transport and its deposition behavior. Consequently, this can affect the respiratory health of miners, modifying the toxicity and the respiratory deposition of DPM particles. Identified research imperatives include (1) the advancement of instrumentation for accurate number measurement of DPM to replace or supplement traditional gravimetric methods; (2) the development of long-lasting, cost-effective control technologies tailored for the mining industry; (3) an in-depth investigation of DPM interactions within the unique mine microclimate, considering the critical components like humidity and other aerosols; and (4) understanding the differential impact of DPM in mining compared to other industries, informing the creation of mining-specific health and safety protocols. This review's findings underscore the urgency to enhance emission control and exposure prevention strategies, paving the way for a healthier underground mining work environment.

Abstract:The aerosolized dust produced during coal mining operations pollutes underground air environment and increases the risk of lung diseases in coal miners, such as pneumoconiosis. Aiming to solve the dust pollution in mechanized excavation face, the integrated vortex ventilation and dust removal system is designed based on swirling jet flow theory. The design principles and technological parameters of the major components of integrated vortex ventilation and dust removal (IVVDR) system, namely vortex ventilation device and wet dust collector are described systematically. Through numerical simulation and field experiments, the dust control and dust removal effects of IVVDR system were analyzed and tested. The numerical simulation results show that the swirling jet flows produced by wall-attached duct can control most of total and respirable dust in the area between working face and exhausting air outlet. In addition, the IVVDR system provides better control and removal effect of smaller respirable dust. In field application, the IVVDR system has better performance compared with the long-compression short-suction (LCSS) ventilation. In conclusion, the concentration of total and respirable dust in purified air are below 10 mg/m 3 , and in accordance with the mine safety regulations.

Abstract:In one patient with pulmonary sarcoidosis, hypertension occurred during the course of the disease. Aortography showed extensive narrowing of the right renal artery. Surgical exploration disclosed extensive periaortic and perirenal fibrosis. This fibrosis encircled the right renal artery and caused extrinsic compression. Pathological examination disclosed a large amount of histiocyte epithelioid infiltration in various samples of the fibrosis and particularly in the adventitia of the renal artery, highly suggestive of sarcoidal angiitis. Surgical biopsy was performed on both kidneys. The right kidney, protected by arterial stenosis, was little altered, while the left kidney showed extensive interstitial, tubular, and glomerular lesions. The glomerular lesions were focal and segmental hyalinosis.
Open-air sprays for capturing and controlling airborne float coal dust on longwall faces

Abstract:Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce the risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm in diameter, in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity of 3.6 m/s (700 fpm). Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle should be operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings agree with past respirable dust control research, providing guidance on spray selection and spray array design in ongoing efforts to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening.

Abstract:The development of coal industry is restricted by dust pollution. Air curtain dust control technology was proposed as a solution to the serious problem of pollution. A mixture of numerical modeling and field tests has been used to study this technology. Numerical simulation is used to analyze the dust control effect of this technology under different dust generation conditions. Field measurements are used to verify the effectiveness of this technology. The results show that following the application of this technology, the fan-shaped air curtain generated by the fans forms a trapezoidal protective area between the coal cutter and the sidewalk. This protective area prevents dust from entering the coal-cutter driver’s workspace. The average dust concentrations where the coal-cutter driver works were 1590 and 466 mg/m3, severally, before and after the implementation of this technology. The dust control rate in this space is approximately 70.69%. This research provides useful data for dust control technology in fully mechanized mining faces, and will contribute to the stable development of coal fuel.

Abstract:Abstract In view of the ventilation status of xiaobaodang coal mine fully mechanized driving face, this paper puts forward the idea of using full extraction ventilation to solve the problem of pollution air leakage in long pressure short suction ventilation, which provides a new idea for dust control of fully mechanized excavation in xiaobaodang coal mine. Solid geometry model of fully mechanized driving face is established by SolidWorks. The influence of different distance between suction outlet and head-on and different air volume on dust migration distribution and dust control effect is analyzed by fluent. The results show that the best dust control effect is obtained when the air volume is set at 300m 3 / min and the distance between the suction outlet and the head-on is 5m. The dust concentration is lower than 10mg / m 3 in the air duct side, 8m in the central section of the air duct and 16m in the height of the respiratory zone on the pedestrian side. The dust control effect is better at the side far away from the air duct. The measured results are consistent with the numerical simulation results. In addition, the optimized dust control method was verified on site, and the dust reduction efficiency at the driver's place and personnel walking position reached 62.8% and 82.8% respectively.

Abstract:On the basis of the jet theory of airflow fields and the gas–solid two-phase flow theory, we studied the law of dust migration in a simulated dusting space. We used the control variable method and numerical simulation software to explore the airflow field and dust concentration distribution on the working surface of the dusting under different inlet wind speeds and different attached blades of the double-walled annular air curtain. We determined the speed of the inlet of the annular air curtain to be 30 m/s. When the angle of the attached blade was 30°, the dust concentration of the driver and other workers was controlled below 100 mg/m 3 , which produced the best dust control effect is the best. Using real data, we built a similar test platform to test the airflow field and dust concentration. Through data measurement and analysis, we proved that a dust control system with a double-wall attached-ring air curtain formed a circulating airflow field that could shield dust and effectively reduce dust concentration in the simulated space. The dust removal efficiency of total dust and exhaled dust reached 98.5% and 97.5%, respectively. We compared the test data and simulation results and concluded that the double-wall attached-ring air curtain could effectively ensure the safety of mine production and provide a better underground working environment for operators.

Abstract:In the present study, a numerical simulation method was adopted in order to examine the characteristics of dust dispersion during continuous dust release periods (CRP) and stop dust release periods (SRP). The purpose was to analyze the dust distributions and migration actions around road-header drivers in excavation roadways, and then determine effective dust control measures for underground coal mines. This study’s simulation results showed that the dust concentrations continuously increased, and then gradually reached a stability level during the CRP. During that time, the locations of the drivers were always at the intersection of the original migration dust and the backflow dust, and the drivers were invaded by these two strands dust. However, during the SRP, the dust concentrations gradually decreased under the actions of the roadway ventilation. Besides, obvious backflow phenomena were observed around the road-header during the SRP. The locations of the drivers were still within the backflow paths of the high dust concentrations. At the present time, dust separation and extraction systems have been implemented in coal mines, including vacuuming and air knife devices, which are designed to control the dust around the road-header drivers. The field applications of these systems were conducted in the 26 mechanized excavation faces of the Zhangcun Coal Mine. The results revealed that the use of these dust removal systems could effectively reduce the dust concentrations around the road-header drivers. In the present study, the dust removal rates during the CRP and SRP were determined to reach up to 88.7% and 94.6%, respectively. Therefore, the results of this research study provided effective theoretical guidance of the characteristics of dust distributions in coal mines, and introduced effective control methods for the hazardous dust concentrations around road-header drivers during the excavation process.

Evaluation of a Water-Type Dust Collector at an Underground Crushing Operation

Abstract:A self-induced wet dust collector operating at 8.7 m3/sec was evaluated at a crushing station in an underground hard rock mine. The new dust collector replaced a baghouse dust collector. The unit was evaluated for dust removal efficiency as a function of particle size. Performance also was assessed by comparing airborne respirable dust in the general area prior to and after installation of the new collector system. The use of cascade impactors and optical particle counters at the intake and the exhaust of the dust collector revealed a high efficiency (>90%) for particles greater than 2.0 µm in size. The efficiency dropped to approximately 70% and 25% for 1.0 µm and 0.5 µm particles, respectively. The overall respirable dust reduction in the immediate crusher vicinity was measured with 10-mm nylon cyclones and another type of personal dust sampler designed by the Mining Research Laboratory in Elliot Lake, Ontario. The results showed an average respirable dust reduction of 51% with a maximum of 64% in some areas. For respirable silica dust, the average reduction was higher at 70% with maxima of up to 79%.
Field study results of a 3rd generation roof bolter canopy air curtain for respirable coal mine dust control

Abstract:Abstract A 3rd generation roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) has been developed and constructed by J.H. Fletcher & Co., Inc. As with the previous generation of the CAC, this design uses the principle of providing uniform airflow across the canopy area as recommended by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The new modifications include a plenum that is constructed of a single flat aluminum plate, smaller-diameter airflow openings, and a single row of perimeter nozzles designed to prevent mine air contaminated by respirable dust from entering the CAC protection zone. Field testing was conducted on this new 3rd generation design showing reductions in coal mine respirable dust exposure for roof bolter operators. Dust control efficiencies for the CAC for the left bolter operator (intake side) ranged from approximately 26%–60%, while the efficiencies for the CAC for the right bolter operator (return side) ranged from 3% to 47%.

Abstract:Respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) exposure is associated with black lung and silicosis diseases in underground miners. Although only RCMD mass and silica concentrations are regulated, it is possible that particle size, surface area, and other chemical constituents also contribute to its adverse health effects. This review summarizes measurement technologies for RCMD mass concentrations, morphology, size distributions, and chemical compositions, with examples from published efforts where these methods have been applied. Some state-of-the-art technologies presented in this paper have not been certified as intrinsically safe, and caution should be exerted for their use in explosive environments. RCMD mass concentrations are most often obtained by filter sampling followed by gravimetric analysis, but recent requirements for real-time monitoring by continuous personal dust monitors (CPDM) enable quicker exposure risk assessments. Emerging low-cost photometers provide an opportunity for a wider deployment of real-time exposure assessment. Particle size distributions can be determined by microscopy, cascade impactors, aerodynamic spectrometers, optical particle counters, and electrical mobility analyzers, each with unique advantages and limitations. Different filter media are required to collect integrated samples over working shifts for comprehensive chemical analysis. Teflon membrane filters are used for mass by gravimetry, elements by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence, rare-earth elements by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and mineralogy by X-ray diffraction. Quartz fiber filters are analyzed for organic, elemental, and brown carbon by thermal/optical methods and non-polar organics by thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Polycarbonate-membrane filters are analyzed for morphology and elements by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray, and quartz content by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:Float coal dust is produced by various mining methods, carried by ventilating air and deposited on the floor, roof and ribs of mine airways. If deposited, float dust is re-entrained during a methane explosion. Without sufficient inert rock dust quantities, this float coal dust can propagate an explosion throughout mining entries. Consequently, controlling float coal dust is of critical interest to mining operations. Rock dusting, which is the adding of inert material to airway surfaces, is the main control technique currently used by the coal mining industry to reduce the float coal dust explosion hazard. To assist the industry in reducing this hazard, the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health initiated a project to investigate methods and technologies to reduce float coal dust in underground coal mines through prevention, capture and suppression prior to deposition. Field characterization studies were performed to determine quantitatively the sources, types and amounts of dust produced during various coal mining processes. The operations chosen for study were a continuous miner section, a longwall section and a coal-handling facility. For each of these operations, the primary dust sources were confirmed to be the continuous mining machine, longwall shearer and conveyor belt transfer points, respectively. Respirable and total airborne float dust samples were collected and analyzed for each operation, and the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust was calculated. During the continuous mining process, the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ranged from 10.3 to 13.8. The ratios measured on the longwall face were between 18.5 and 21.5. The total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ratio observed during belt transport ranged between 7.5 and 21.8.

Abstract:To address the challenge of dust control during dry drilling of underground coal seams, a novel dust-collecting device for micron-size dust was designed and tested. To determine the optimal structural parameters of the dust collector, numerical simulations were employed to investigate the influence of the positions of the dust extraction pipe, slag discharge pipe angle, and cavity diameter on the distributions of the airflow velocity field and the pressure field inside the device. The findings revealed that the best performance was achieved when the dust extraction pipe was positioned in the lower part of the cavity, the angle between the slag discharge pipe and the cavity was 45°, and the cavity diameter was 300 mm. Under these conditions, the average airflow velocity in the dust extraction pipe reached 8.32 m/s, the maximum negative pressure at the pipe's mouth was recorded at 1012.38 Pa, and the velocity of the dusty airflow in the cavity remained below 4.38 m/s. Dust capture performance was evaluated through on-site testing in the Taoyuan Coal Mine. The results demonstrated that using the novel device, the dust suppression rates at the slag discharge port, the connection between the device and the drill pipe, and 6 m from the drill hole on the downwind side increased by 92.5%, 88.5%, and 89.1%, respectively.

Abstract:In order to avoid pneumoconiosis and other hazards caused by excessive concentrations of dust in construction tunnels, this paper applies CFD numerical simulation, in combination with field measurements, to study the dust control effect of a construction tunnel under the different parameters of ventilation system. Firstly, the distance between the secondary air pressure inlet and the tunnel face (Lp) in the ventilation system was studied, then the airflow transport and dust pollution and diffusion were analyzed in eight positions, before the actual results of the analysis were measured on site. The results of the CFD model were validated with field measurements in a construction tunnel, with both fully concurring, thereby demonstrating the developed simulation strategy's high-level of accuracy. The optimal range obtained regarding the distance between the secondary air pressure inlet and the tunnel face was 30 m–40 m. Moreover, the dust pollution and dispersion distance was controlled at a range of 51.10 m–54.31 m, the dust concentration ranged from 1.32 mg/m3 to 13.12 mg/m3, and therefore the dust control effect was superior. Furthermore, the research methods and findings are of great significance and provide references for the effective prevention of a construction tunnel's dust and cleaner production.
