Abstract:The aerosolized dust produced during coal mining operations pollutes underground air environment and increases the risk of lung diseases in coal miners, such as pneumoconiosis. Aiming to solve the dust pollution in mechanized excavation face, the integrated vortex ventilation and dust removal system is designed based on swirling jet flow theory. The design principles and technological parameters of the major components of integrated vortex ventilation and dust removal (IVVDR) system, namely vortex ventilation device and wet dust collector are described systematically. Through numerical simulation and field experiments, the dust control and dust removal effects of IVVDR system were analyzed and tested. The numerical simulation results show that the swirling jet flows produced by wall-attached duct can control most of total and respirable dust in the area between working face and exhausting air outlet. In addition, the IVVDR system provides better control and removal effect of smaller respirable dust. In field application, the IVVDR system has better performance compared with the long-compression short-suction (LCSS) ventilation. In conclusion, the concentration of total and respirable dust in purified air are below 10 mg/m 3 , and in accordance with the mine safety regulations.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the control and removal of dust pollution in mechanized tunneling faces. Specifically, aerosol dust generated during coal mining operations can pollute the underground air environment and increase the risk of lung diseases, such as pneumoconiosis, for coal miners. To meet this challenge, the author designed an Integrated Vortex Ventilation and Dust Removal system (IVVDR) based on the swirling jet theory. This system aims to generate swirling jets with large diffusion angles, strong turbulent fluctuations, and strong rolling effects through optimized wall - attached pipes, so as to effectively control and remove total dust and respirable dust, thereby improving the working environment in underground mines and reducing the risk of occupational diseases such as pneumoconiosis. ### Main research contents and methods 1. **System design**: - The paper elaborately describes the main components of the IVVDR system and its technical parameters, including the design principles of the vortex ventilation device and the wet - type dust collector. - Through numerical simulation and field experiments, the dust removal effect of the IVVDR system was analyzed and tested. 2. **Numerical simulation**: - The FLUENT software was used to conduct numerical simulations of the air - flow field and dust distribution in the mechanized tunneling face. - The simulation results show that the swirling jets generated by the wall - attached pipes can effectively control most of the total dust and respirable dust between the working face and the exhaust outlet, especially having a better control and removal effect on the smaller respirable dust. 3. **Field application**: - Field tests were carried out at the 4306 mechanized tunneling face in Dongtan Coal Mine in Shandong to verify the practical application effect of the IVVDR system. - Compared with traditional Forced Ventilation (FV) and Long - Pressure - Short - Suction Ventilation (LCSS), the IVVDR system shows better performance in reducing the concentrations of total dust and respirable dust. Especially at the driver's position, the dust concentration was reduced by more than 80%, and the concentration of respirable dust in the purified air was only 4.3%, meeting the standard of the Coal Mine Safety Regulations (10 mg/m³). ### Conclusion - The IVVDR system, which combines vortex ventilation and the KCS wet - type dust collector, can effectively control and remove dust in mechanized tunneling faces, improving the safety and healthiness of the working environment. - The results of numerical simulation and field tests both indicate that the IVVDR system has significant advantages in reducing the concentrations of total dust and respirable dust, especially at the tunnel machine position, with a dust reduction efficiency of more than 90%. In conclusion, this research provides a new and effective solution to the problem of dust pollution in underground coal mines, which is helpful for improving the working environment and health conditions of coal miners.
