Abstract:Ever since the time of Euler, the so-called Euler sums have been evaluated in many different ways. We give here a (presumably) new proof of the classical Euler sum. We show that several interesting analogues of the Euler sums can be evaluated by systematically analyzing some known summation formulas involving hypergeometric series. Many other identities related to the Euler sums are also presented.

Abstract:We use the classical umbral calculus to describe Riordan arrays. Here, a Riordan array is generated by a pair of umbrae, and this provides efficient proofs of several basic results of the theory such as the multiplication rule, the recursive properties, the fundamental theorem and the connection with Sheffer sequences. In particular, we show that the fundamental theorem turns out to be a reformulation of the umbral Abel identity. As an application, we give an elementary approach to the problem of extending integer powers of Riordan arrays to complex powers in such a way that additivity of the exponents is preserved. Also, ordinary Riordan arrays are studied within the classical umbral perspective and some combinatorial identities are discussed regarding Catalan numbers, Fibonacci numbers and Chebyshev polynomials.

Abstract:Using combinatorial techniques, we derive a recurrence identity that expresses an exponential power sum with negative powers in terms of another exponential power sum with positive powers. Consequently, we derive a formula for the power sum of the first $k$ natural numbers when the power is odd, which when used in combination with Faulhaber's formula for computing power sums helps us to retrieve the Bernoulli numbers in certain cases.

Abstract:We revisit and generalize inequalities for the summatory function of the sum of digits in a given integer base. We prove that several known results can be deduced from a theorem in a 2023 paper by Mohanty, Greenbury, Sarkany, Narayanan, Dingle, Ahnert, and Louis, whose primary scope is the maximum mutational robustness in genotype-phenotype maps.

Abstract:Seventy years on, Moessner's theorem and Moessner's process -- i.e., the additive computation of integral powers -- continue to fascinate. They have given rise to a variety of elegant proofs, to an implementation in hardware, to generalizations, and now even to a popular video, "The Moessner Miracle.'' The existence of this video, and even more its title, indicate that while the "what'' of Moessner's process is understood, its "how'' and even more its "why'' are still elusive. And indeed all the proofs of Moessner's theorem involve more complicated concepts than both the theorem and the process. This article identifies that Moessner's process implements an additive function with dynamic programming. A version of this implementation without dynamic programming (1) gives rise to a simpler statement of Moessner's theorem and (2) can be abstracted and then instantiated into related additive computations. The simpler statement also suggests a simpler and more efficient implementation to compute integral powers as well as simple additive functions to compute, e.g., Factorial numbers. It also reveals the source of -- to quote John Conway and Richard Guy -- Moessner's magic.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel direct elementary proof for Fermat's Last Theorem. We use algebra, modular math, and binomial series to develop inherent mathematical relationships hidden within Fermat's Last Theorem. With these derived relationships, we are able to develop general pattern applicable for all positive integers of n. Finally, we are able to confirm and complete the direct proof for Fermat's Diophantine equation for all n.

Abstract:First we reprove two results in additive number theory due to Dombi and Chen & Wang, respectively, on the number of representations of n as the sum of two odious or evil numbers, using techniques from automata theory and logic. We also use this technique to prove a new result about the numbers represented by five summands. Furthermore, we prove some new results on the tenfold sums of the evil and odious numbers, as well as k-fold sums of similar sequences of integers, by using techniques of analytic number theory involving trigonometric sums associated with the (+-1)-characteristic sequences of these integers.

Abstract:We discuss the summation of certain series defined by counting blocks of digits in the $B$-ary expansion of an integer. For example, if $s_2(n)$ denotes the sum of the base-2 digits of $n$, we show that $\sum_{n \geq 1} s_2(n)/(2n(2n+1)) = (\gamma + \log \frac{4}{\pi})/2$. We recover this previous result of Sondow in math.NT/0508042 and provide several generalizations.

Abstract:The generalized hyperharmonic numbers $h_n^{(m)}(k)$ are defined by means of the multiple harmonic numbers. We show that the hyperharmonic numbers $h_n^{(m)}(k)$ satisfy certain recurrence relation which allow us to write them in terms of classical harmonic numbers. Moreover, we prove that the Euler-type sums with hyperharmonic numbers: \[S\left( {k,m;p} \right): = \sum\limits_{n = 1}^\infty {\frac{{h_n^{\left( m \right)}\left( k \right)}}{n^p}} \;\;\left(p\geq m+1,\ {k = 1,2,3} \right)\] can be expressed as a rational linear combination of products of Riemann zeta values and harmonic numbers. This is an extension of the results of Dil (2015) \cite{AD2015} and Mez$\ddot{o}$ (2010) \cite{M2010}. Some interesting new consequences and illustrative examples are considered.

Abstract:The problem of finding the sum of a polynomial's values is considered. In particular, for any $n\geq 3$, the explicit formula for the sum of the $n$th powers of natural numbers $S_n=\sum_{x=1}^{m}x^{n}$ is proved: $$\sum_{x=1}^{m}x^{n}=(-1)^{n}m(m+1)(-\frac{1}{2}+\sum_{i=2}^{n}a_i(m+2)(m+3)...(m+i)),$$ here $a_i=\frac{1}{i+1}\sum_{k=1}^{i}\frac{(-1)^{k}k^{n}}{k!(i-k)!}$, $(i=2,3,...,n-1)$, $a_n=\frac{(-1)^n}{n+1}$. Note that this formula does not contain Bernoulli numbers.

Abstract:A composition of a positive integer n is a k-tuple (λ1, λ2, …, λk) ∈ ℤk>0 such that n = λ1 + λ2 + … + λk. Our goal is to enumerate those compositions whose parts λ1, λ2, …, λk avoid a fixed arithmetic sequence. When this sequence is given by the even integers (i.e., all parts of the compositions must be odd), it is well known that the number of compositions is given by the Fibonacci sequence. A much more recent theorem says that when the parts are required to avoid all multiples of a given integer k, the resulting compositions are counted by a sequence given by a Fibonacci-type recursion of depth k. We extend this result to arbitrary arithmetic sequences. Our main tool is a lemma on generating functions that is no secret among experts but deserves to be more widely known.

Abstract:The following magic trick is at the center of this paper. While the audience writes the first ten terms of a Fibonacci-like sequence (the sequence following the same recursion as the Fibonacci sequence), the magician calculates the sum of these ten terms very fast by multiplying the 7th term by 11. This trick is based on the divisibility properties of partial sums of Fibonacci-like sequences. We find the maximum Fibonacci number that divides the sum of the Fibonacci numbers 1 through $n$. We discuss the generalization of the trick for other second-order recurrences. We show that a similar trick exists for Pell-like sequences and does not exist for Jacobhstal-like sequences.
