Abstract:We study a broad class of algorithmic problems with an "additive flavor" such as computing sumsets, 3SUM, Subset Sum and geometric pattern matching. Our starting point is that these problems can often be solved efficiently for integers, owed to the rich available tool set including bit-tricks, linear hashing, and the Fast Fourier Transform. However, for real numbers these tools are not available, leading to significant gaps in the best-known running times for integer inputs versus for real inputs. In this work our goal is to close this gap. As our key contribution we design a new technique for computing real sumsets. It is based on a surprising blend of algebraic ideas (like Prony's method and coprime factorizations) with combinatorial tricks. We then apply our new algorithm to the aforementioned problems and successfully obtain, in all cases, equally fast algorithms for real inputs. Specifically, we replicate the running times of the following landmark results by randomized algorithms in the standard real RAM model: - Sumsets: Given two sets $A,B$, their sumset $A+B=\{a+b:a\in A,b\in B\}$ can be computed in time $\tilde O(|A+B|)$ [Cole, Hariharan; STOC'02]. - Geometric pattern matching: Given two sets $A,B$, we can test whether there is some shift such that $A+s\subseteq B$ in time $\tilde O(|A|+|B|)$ [Cardoze, Schulman; FOCS'98]. - 3SUM with preprocessing: We can preprocess three size-$n$ sets $A,B,C$ in time $\tilde O(n^2)$ such that upon query of sets $A'\subseteq A,B'\subseteq B,C'\subseteq C$, the 3SUM instance $(A',B',C')$ can be decided in time $\tilde O(n^{13/7})$ [Chan, Lewenstein; STOC'15]. - Output-sensitive Subset Sum: Given a size-$n$ (multi-)set $X$ and a target $t$, we can compute the set of subset sums $\{\Sigma(X'):X'\subseteq X,\Sigma(X')\leq t\}$ in output-sensitive time $\tilde O(n+\mathrm{out}^{4/3})$ [Bringmann, Nakos; STOC'20].

Abstract:A subset $S$ of the Boolean hypercube $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ is a sumset if $S = A+A = \{a + b \ | \ a, b\in A\}$ for some $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_2^n$. We prove that the number of sumsets in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ is asymptotically $(2^n-1)2^{2^{n-1}}$. Furthermore, we show that the family of sumsets in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ is almost identical to the family of all subsets of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ that contain a complete linear subspace of co-dimension $1$.

Abstract:For a nonempty finite set $A$ of integers, let $S(A) = \left\{ \sum_{b\in B} b: \emptyset \not= B\subseteq A\right\}$ be the set of all nonempty subset sums of $A$. In 1995, Nathanson determined the minimum cardinality of $S(A)$ in terms of $|A|$ and described the structure of $A$ for which $|S(A)|$ is the minimum. He asked to characterize the underlying set $A$ if $|S(A)|$ is a small increment to its minimum size. Problems of such nature are inspired by the well-known Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem. In this paper, some results in the direction of Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem for the set of subset sums $S(A)$ are proved. Such results are also extended to the set of subsequence sums $S(\mathbb{A}) = \left\{ \sum_{b\in \mathbb{B}} b: \emptyset \not= \mathbb{B} \subseteq \mathbb{A} \right\}$ of sequence $\mathbb{A}$, where the notation $\mathbb{B} \subseteq \mathbb{A} $, is used for $\mathbb{B}$ is a subsequence of $\mathbb{A}$. The results are further generalized to a generalization of subset and subsequence sums. The main idea of the proofs of the results is to write the set of subset sums $S(A)$ and the set of subsequence sums $S(\mathbb{A})$ in terms of the $h$-fold sumset $hA$ and the $h$-fold restricted sumset $h^\wedge A$. Such representation also gives other proof of some of the results of Nathanson and Mistri et al.

On Power Sums and the Kummer Congruences

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the stabilizers of certain multisets $\mod p^k$ with respect to their natural multiplicative action, completely describing them for a certain family of polynomials whenever $p$ is an odd prime. This elucidates an underlying structure on the level of elements that yields a new proof of the classical Kummer Congruences. Hence the Kummer Congruences can be viewed as a consequence of putting together this local information, the interactions between which are understood. This gives a new perspective in that all known approaches are based directly on global considerations, namely either through global sum identities or $p$-adic integrals.

Abstract:We solve a problem in enumerative combinatorics which is equivalent to counting topological types of certain group actions on compact Riemann surfaces. Let $V_2(F_p)$ be the two-dimensional vector space over $F_p$, the field with $p$ elements, $p$ an odd prime. We count orbits of the general linear group $GL_2(F_p)$ on certain multisets consisting of $R \geq 3$ non-zero columns from $V_2(F_p)$. The $R$-multisets are `zero-sum,' that is, the sum (mod $p$) over the columns in the multiset is $[\begin{smallmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}]$. The orbit count yields the number of topological types of fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $2$ on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+ Rp(p-1)/2-p^2.$

Abstract:For $A\subseteq \mathbb{R}$, let $A+A=\{a+b: a,b\in A\}$ and $AA=\{ab: a,b\in A\}$. For $k\in \mathbb{N}$, let $SP(k)$ denote the minimum value of $\max\{|A+A|, |AA|\}$ over all $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ with $|A|=k$. Here we establish $SP(k)=3k-3$ for $2\leq k \leq 7$, the $k=7$ case achieved for example by $\{1,2,3,4,6,8,12\}$, while $SP(k)=3k-2$ for $k=8,9$, the $k=9$ case achieved for example by $\{1,2,3,4,6,8,9,12,16\}$. For $4\leq k \leq 7$, we provide two proofs using different applications of Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem; one of the proofs includes extensive case analysis on the product sets of $k$-element subsets of $(2k-3)$-term arithmetic progressions. For $k=8,9$, we apply Freiman's $3k-3$ theorem for product sets, and investigate the sumset of the union of two geometric progressions with the same common ratio $r>1$, with separate treatments of the overlapping cases $r\neq 2$ and $r\geq 2$.

Abstract:In 1957 Leo Moser published a problem in American Mathematical Monthly asking whether knowing the set of all pairwise sums of five numbers one could determine the original numbers. Problem was quickly generalized as "Is it always possible to restore a collection of $n$ numbers from the collection of its $s$-sums?"; it turned out to be a very interesting and nontrivial question in additive number theory and combinatorics. On its sixtieth anniversary we present here a survey of all the known research, results and techniques used in various attempts to solve this problem. Some new findings and open questions are presented as well.

Abstract:A subset $S$ of the Boolean hypercube $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ is a sumset if $S = \{a + b : a, b\in A\}$ for some $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_2^n$. Sumsets are central objects of study in additive combinatorics, featuring in several influential results. We prove a lower bound of $\Omega(2^{n/2})$ for the number of queries needed to test whether a Boolean function $f:\mathbb{F}_2^n \to \{0,1\}$ is the indicator function of a sumset. Our lower bound for testing sumsets follows from sharp bounds on the related problem of shift testing, which may be of independent interest. We also give a near-optimal $2^{n/2} \cdot \mathrm{poly}(n)$-query algorithm for a smoothed analysis formulation of the sumset refutation problem.

Abstract:A given subset $A$ of natural numbers is said to be complete if every element of $\N$ is the sum of distinct terms taken from $A$. This topic is strongly connected to the knapsack problem which is known to be NP complete. The main goal of the paper is to study the structure of subset sums in a higher dimension. We show 'dense' sets and generalized arithmetic progrssions in subset sums of certain sets.

Abstract:The aim of this note is to exploit a new relationship between additive combinatorics and the geometry of monomial projective curves. We associate to a finite set of non-negative integers a monomial projective curve such that the Hilbert function of and the cardinalities of agree. The singularities of determines the asymptotic behaviour of | sA |, equivalently the Hilbert polynomial of , and the asymptotic structure of sA . We show that some additive inverse problems can be translate to the rigidity of Hilbert polynomials and we improve an upper bound of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of monomial projective curves by using results of additive combinatorics.

An Introduction to Multisets

Abstract:Multisets are sets that allow repetition of elements. As such, multisets pave the way to a number of interesting possibilities of theoretical and applied nature. In the present work, after revising the main aspects of traditional sets, we introduce some of the main concepts and characteristics of multisets, followed by their generalization to take into account vectors and matrices. An approach is also proposed in which the real, negative multiplicities are allowed, implying the multiset universe to become finite and well-defined, corresponding to the multiset with null multiplicities. The complement operation in multisets is then defined, which allows properties involving complement -- including the De Morgan theorem -- to be recovered in multisets. In addition, it becomes possible to extend multisets to functions (which become multifunctions), scalar fields and other continuous mathematical structure, therefore achieving an enhanced space endowed with all algebraic operations plus set theoretical operations including union, intersection, and complementation. The possibility to define a set operation between mfunctions, namely the common product, that is analogous to the traditional inner product is also proposed, paving the way to obtaining respective mfunction transformations, and it is argued that the Walsh functions provide an orthogonal basis for the mfunctions space under the common product. This result also allowed the proposal of performing integrated signal processing operations on mset mfunctions, including filtering and enhanced template matching. Relationships between the cosine similarity index and the Jaccard index are also identified, including the presentation of an intersection-based variation of the cosine index. The potential of multisets in pattern recognition and deep learning is also briefly characterized and illustrated.

Abstract:We are looking for integer sets that resemble classical Cantor set and investigate the structure of their sum sets. Especially we investigate $FS(B)$ the subset sum of sequence type $B=\{\lfloor p^n\alpha\rfloor\}^\infty_{n=0}$. When $p=2$, then we prove $FS(B)+FS(B)=\N$ by analogy with the Cantor set, and some structure theorem for $p>2$

Abstract:In this paper we study summability based on double sequences of complex constants as it is defined in "Linear Operators, General Theory" by N. Dunford and J. T. Schwartz. We define "power double sequences" or infinite "power matrices" as certain generalizations of double sequences and power series. We relate the summability and boundedness of the power double sequences to the summability and boundedness of the double sequence \textit{A}. While others do investigate "power matrices" their definitions, as far as we were able to find, differ from our definitions. Using these definitions we extend some summability results for double sequences of constants to our power double sequences. We investigate also other possible generalizations of double sequences and assess their usefulness in summability study.

Abstract:We obtain quantitative estimates for the asymptotic density of subsets of the two-dimensional integer lattice which contain only trivial solutions to an additive equation involving binary forms. In the process we develop an analogue of Vinogradov's mean value theorem applicable to binary forms.

Abstract:Jin proved that whenever A and B are sets of positive upper density in Z, A+B is piecewise syndetic. Jin's theorem was subsequently generalized by Jin and Keisler to a certain family of abelian groups, which in particular contains Zd. Answering a question of Jin and Keisler, we show that this result can be extended to countable amenable groups. Moreover we establish that such sumsets (or — depending on the notation — “product sets”) are piecewise Bohr, a result which for G=Z was proved by Bergelson, Furstenberg and Weiss. In the case of an abelian group G, we show that a set is piecewise Bohr if and only if it contains a sumset of two sets of positive upper Banach density.
