Abstract:The ionosphere is the ionized part of the upper atmosphere that is caused mainly by photoionization by solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission and the atmospheric photochemistry process. The ionospheric ions escape from the ionosphere and populate the Earth’s magnetosphere. In this case study, ion outflows from two different origins were obtained by spacecraft Cluster C1 in the magnetospheric cusp region. One of the outflows was from the reflection of the dispersed solar wind particles. The other was the ionospheric outflow passing through the low latitude boundary layer of the cusp (LLBL/cusp), which was energized by downward Poynting flux. Similar to the reflected solar wind particles, outflowing ionospheric cold ions could also extend to the high-latitude region with magnetic field line convection, which mixed it up with solar wind particles. Based on the Cluster observation in the cusp region, two different origins of the outflowing particles were determined, and their unique mechanisms of formation were discussed. Results suggest that the strong electric field associated with solar wind particle precipitation may additionally accelerate the cold ionospheric ion flow in the LLBL/cusp.
The Relation Between Dayside Local Poynting Flux Enhancement and Cusp Reconnection

Abstract:The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program(DMSP) F15 satellite frequently observes an unusually high level of local Poynting flux when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is northward but also has a large By component. We use the Open Geospace General Circulation Model (OpenGGCM) coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere code to study several events where, under such conditions, unusually large earthward Poynting flux has been observed. We find that the Joule heating rate in the model agrees well with the observed Poynting flux. Analysis of the model results shows that the strong Poynting flux hot spots are physically linked with magnetic reconnection at the high-latitude cusps. The solar wind mechanical force and the J x B force act on the newly opened field lines created by cusp reconnection to produce a Pedersen current, which consequently generates an intense Joule heating region, and a pair of adjacent and opposite field-aligned currents (FACs) connecting to the magnetopause currents forming a closed circuit. The intense Joule heating region is also the region with strong downward Poynting flux. The distribution, scale, and magnitude of this Joule heating region and corresponding FACs in the polar regions are mainly controlled by IMF clock angle, IMF magnitude, and solar wind dynamic pressure. A northward IMF condition with a large By component will result in an extended region with intense Joule heating and FAC, thus making a spacecraft transiting the dayside region more likely to observe a strong downward Poynting flux.
The Dynamics of Earth’s Cusp in Response to the Interplanetary Shock

Abstract:The Earth’s magnetospheric cusp, a region with an off-equatorial magnetic field minimum, is an important place which directly transports plasma and energy from the solar wind into the magnetosphere and ionosphere. Its magnetic topology and charged particles therein are known to respond to the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field. However, its dynamics in response to the interplanetary (IP) shock are still unknown, due to lack of direct spacecraft observations. This study first reports the observations of the cusp’s motion under the drive of an IP shock and both strong electric fields and outflowing energetic ions in the moving cusp. After an IP shock arrival on 7 September 2017, triple cusps were observed by Cluster C4 when it was crossing the high-altitude northern polar region to the sub-solar magnetosphere. The multiple cusps had a one-to-one correspondence with the dayside magnetosphere compression and relaxation detected by THEMIS E, indicating that one cusp moved back and forth three times due to the IP shock’s impact. In the moving cusp, there were strong impulsive electric fields with a peak of up to ∼40 mV/m and an ionospheric source population of upward propagating ions (O+, He+ and H+) with energies extending to MeV. However, the outflowing ions outside the cusp had energies of no more than 1 keV. An enhancement of energetic O+ appeared inside the cusp with the flux ratio of O+/H+ increasing from 10 keV to ∼ MeV, which implies the efficient acceleration of O+. These observations are shown to be consistent with the prompt acceleration by the impulsive electric fields, which is mass-dependent. This finding suggests a new acceleration mechanism for cusp energetic ions, especially for O+.
The Electron Energy Distribution in the Hotspots of Cygnus A: Filling the Gap with the Spitzer Space Telescope

Abstract:Here we present Spitzer Space Telescope imaging of Cyg A with the Infrared Array Camera, resulting in the detection of the high-energy tails or cut-offs in the synchrotron spectra for all four hotspots of this archetype radio galaxy. When combined with the other data collected from the literature, our observations allow for detailed modeling of the broad-band emission for the brightest spots A and D. We confirm that the X-ray flux detected previously from these features is consistent with the synchrotron self-Compton radiation for the magnetic field intensity 170 muG in spot A, and 270 muG in spot D. We also find that the energy density of the emitting electrons is most likely larger by a factor of a few than the energy density of the hotspots' magnetic field. We construct energy spectra of the radiating ultrarelativistic electrons. We find that for both hotspots A and D these spectra are consistent with a broken power-law extending from at least 100 MeV up to 100 GeV, and that the spectral break corresponds almost exactly to the proton rest energy of 1 GeV. We argue that the shape of the electron continuum reflects two different regimes of the electron acceleration process at mildly relativistic shocks, rather than resulting from radiative cooling and/or absorption effects. In this picture the protons' inertia defines the critical energy for the hotspot electrons above which Fermi-type acceleration processes may play a major role, but below which the operating acceleration mechanism has to be of a different type. At energies >100 GeV, the electron spectra cut-off/steepen again, most likely as a result of spectral aging due to radiative loss effects. We discuss several implications of the presented analysis for the physics of extragalactic jets.

Abstract:Bursty energetic electron events with energies of about 20–400keV have been observed in the cusp region when the CLUSTER S/C were travelling outbound on 5 April 2001. These electron events are characterized by strong impulsive increases in the flux whereas energetic ions (>30keV) show no obvious changes. The enhanced energetic electron flux is more than 10 times higher than the background level whereas the energetic ions show no significant changes. The bursts of energetic electrons occurred mainly in the time interval when the northward IMF had a significant By component and were associated with the rotation of the local Bz (bi-polar signature) and with a dramatic change of the plasma flow (<30keV) from tailward to dawnward. These bursts of electrons are well confined in a small scale flux rope structure as implied by the magnetic field and plasma measurements. Energetic electrons were flowing dawnward from the cusp region along (but anti-parallel to) the magnetic field. No stable energetic electron flux that indicates the cusp has a general open field line geometry has been observed. The spike-like electron bursts could be explained by energetic electrons leaking out of the magnetosphere into the cusp when the flux ropes are formed by a transient reconnection in the cusp stagnation region. Further, we propose that the flux ropes are most likely formed in dawn (dusk) side of the cusp region during northward IMF with a significant positive (negative) By component.

Long-period energy releases during a C2.8 flare

Abstract:Context. The study of quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) is a key diagnostic of intermittent or periodic energy releases during solar flares. Aims. We investigated the intermittent energy-releasing processes by analyzing the long-period pulsations during a C2.8 flare on 2023 June 3. Methods. The solar flare was simultaneously observed by the solar X-ray detector on board the Macau Science Satellite-1B, the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite, the Chinese H α Solar Explorer, the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array, the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly, and the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment for the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Results. The C2.8 flare shows three successive and repetitive pulsations in soft X-ray (SXR) and high-temperature extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emissions, which may imply three episodes of energy releases during the solar flare. The QPP period is estimated to be as long as ∼7.5 minutes. EUV imaging observations suggest that these three pulsations come from the same flare area dominated by the hot loop system. Conversely, the flare radiation in wavelengths of radio/microwave, low-temperature EUV, ultraviolet (UV), and H α only reveals the first pulsation, which may be associated with nonthermal electrons accelerated by magnetic reconnection. The other two pulsations in wavelengths of SXR and high-temperature EUV might be caused by the loop-loop interaction. Conclusions. Our observations indicate that the three episodes of energy releases during the C2.8 flare are triggered by different mechanisms, namely the accelerated electron via magnetic reconnection, and the loop-loop interaction in a complicated magnetic configuration.

Outflow of Low-Energy O+ Ion Beams Observed During Periods Without Substorms

Abstract:Abstract. Numerous observations have shown that ions flow out of the ionosphere during substorms with more fluxes leaving as the substorm intensity increases (Wilson et al., 2004). In this article we show observations of low-energy (few tens of electron volts) ionospheric ions flowing out periods without substorms, determined using the Wideband Imaging Camera (WIC) and Auroral Electrojet (AE) indices. We use Cluster ion composition data and show the outflowing ions are field-aligned H+, He+ and O+ beams accelerated to energies of ~40–80 eV, after correcting for spacecraft potential. The estimated fluxes of the low-energy O+ ions measured at ~20 000 km altitude are >103–105 cm−2 s. Assuming the auroral oval is the source of the escaping ions, the measured fluxes correspond to a flow rate of ~1019–1021 ions s−1 leaving the ionosphere. However, periods without substorms can persist for hours suggesting the low-energy ions flowing out during these times could be a major source of the heavy ion population in the plasma sheet and lobe.
Direct observations of cross-scale energy transfer in space plasmas

Abstract:The collisionless plasmas in space and astrophysical environments are intrinsically multiscale in nature, behaving as conducting fluids at macroscales and kinetically at microscales comparable to ion- and/or electron-gyroradii. A fundamental question in understanding the plasma dynamics is how energy is transported and dissipated across different scales. Here, we present spacecraft measurements in the solar wind upstream of the terrestrial bow shock, in which the macroscale ultra-low-frequency waves and microscale whistler waves simultaneously resonate with the ions. The ion acceleration from ultra-low-frequency waves leads to velocity distributions unstable to the growth of whistler waves, which in turn resonate with the electrons to complete cross-scale energy transfer. These observations, consistent with numerical simulations in the occurrence of phase-bunched ion and electron distributions, also highlight the importance of anomalous resonance, a nonlinear modification of the classical cyclotron resonance, in the cross-scale wave coupling and energy transfer processes.

Abstract:With the launch of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program F-15 spacecraft in late 1999, data for calculating Earth-directed, magnetospheric Poynting flux became available for the 09-21 solar local time sectors. We have assembled a data base for this key element of the upper atmosphere energy budget, for the interval 2000-2005. Here we briefly introduce the data set and show a subset that reveals a pattern of extreme Poynting flux deposition associated with a large east-west interplanetary magnetic field component. At such times the dayside high-latitude Poynting flux may exceed 170 mW/m(2)-an order of magnitude above typical values. The likely source of these events is merging at the magnetopause flank and lobe. A significant fraction of these events occur with high speed solar wind. This pattern of extreme Poynting flux deposition has, to date, eluded detection. Cluster Observations of Particle Acceleration Up to Supra-Thermal Energies in the Cusp Region Related to Low-Frequency Wave Activity - Possible Implications for the Substorm Initiation Process

Abstract:The purpose of our study is to investigate the way particles are accelerated up to supra-thermal energies in the cusp diamagnetic cavities. For this reason we have examined a number of Cluster cusp crossings, originally identified by Zhang et al. (2005), for the years 2001 and 2002 using data from RAPID, STAFF, EFW, CIS, PEACE, and FGM exper- iments. In the present study we focus on two particular cusp crossings on 25 March 2002 and on 10 April 2002 which demonstrate in a clear way the general characteristics of the events in our survey. Both events exhibit very sharp spatial boundaries seen both in CNO (primarily single-charged oxy- gen of ionospheric origin based on CIS observations) and H + flux increases within the RAPID energy range with the magnetic field intensity being anti-correlated. Unlike the first event, the second one shows also a moderate electron flux in- crease. The fact that the duskward electric field Ey has rel- atively low values <5 mV/m while the local wave activity is very intense provides a strong indication that particle en- ergization is caused primarily by wave-particle interactions. The wave power spectra and propagation parameters during these cusp events are examined in detail. It is concluded that the high ion fluxes and at the same time the presence or absence of any sign of energization in the electrons clearly shows that the particle acceleration depends on the wave power near the local particle gyrofrequency and on the per- sistence of the wave-particle interaction process before par- ticles escape from cusp region. Furthermore, the continuous existence of energetic O + ions suggests that energetic O + populations are of spatial nature at least for the eight events that we have studied so far.

Abstract:The nature of energy generation, transport, and effective dissipation responsible for maintaining a hot solar upper atmosphere is still elusive. The Poynting flux is a vital parameter for describing the direction and magnitude of the energy flow, which is mainly used in solar physics for estimating the upward energy generated by photospheric plasma motion. This study presents a pioneering 3D mapping of the magnetic energy transport within a numerically simulated solar atmosphere. By calculating the Finite Time Lyapunov Exponent of the energy velocity, defined as the ratio of the Poynting flux to the magnetic energy density, we precisely identify the sources and destinations of the magnetic energy flow throughout the solar atmosphere. This energy mapping reveals the presence of transport barriers in the lower atmosphere, restricting the amount of magnetic energy from the photosphere reaching the chromosphere and corona. Interacting kinematic and magnetic vortices create energy channels, breaking through these barriers and allowing three times more energy input from photospheric motions to reach the upper atmosphere than before the vortices formed. The vortex system also substantially alters the energy mapping, acting as a source and deposition of energy, leading to localized energy concentration. Furthermore, our results show that the energy is transported following a vortical motion: the Poynting flux vortex. In regions where these vortices coexist, they favor conditions for energy dissipation through ohmic and viscous heating, since they naturally create large gradients in the magnetic and velocity fields over small spatial scales. Hence, the vortex system promotes local plasma heating, leading to temperatures around a million Kelvins.

Abstract:The coronal magnetic field is the prime driver behind many as-yet unsolved mysteries: solar eruptions, coronal heating, and the solar wind, to name a few. It is, however, still poorly observed and understood. We highlight key questions related to magnetic energy storage, release, and transport in the solar corona, and their relationship to these important problems. We advocate for new and multi-point co-optimized measurements, sensitive to magnetic field and other plasma parameters, spanning from optical to $\gamma$-ray wavelengths, to bring closure to these long-standing and fundamental questions. We discuss how our approach can fully describe the 3D magnetic field, embedded plasma, particle energization, and their joint evolution to achieve these objectives.

Velocity distributions of superthermal electrons fitted with a power law function in the magnetosheath: Cluster observations

Abstract:Satellite observations have revealed that superthermal electrons in space plasma generally possess a power law distribution. In this paper, we utilize a power law function to model the omnidirectional differential fluxes of superthermal electrons observed by Cluster in the magnetosheath. By assuming an isotropic pitch angle distribution and performing a nonlinear least squares fitting, we can calculate the index a of the power law distribution of the superthermal electrons. We found that in the magnetosheath the indices alpha of the power law distributions decrease with the increase of w(pe)/Omega(e). It is consistent with the results of the recent particle-in-cell simulations, which described the electron distributions scattered by enhanced whistler waves. This is the first reported observation of this relation in space plasma.
Rapid Enhancement of Low-Energy (< 100ev) Ion Flux in Response to Interplanetary Shocks Based on Two Van Allen Probes Case Studies: Implications for Source Regions and Heating Mechanisms

Abstract:Interactions between interplanetary (IP) shocks and the Earth's magnetosphere manifest many important space physics phenomena including low-energy ion flux enhancements and particle acceleration. In order to investigate the mechanisms driving shock-induced enhancement of low-energy ion flux, we have examined two IP shock events that occurred when the Van Allen Probes were located near the equator while ionospheric and ground observations were available around the spacecraft footprints. We have found that, associated with the shock arrival, electromagnetic fields intensified, and low-energy ion fluxes, including H+, He+, and O+, were enhanced dramatically in both the parallel and perpendicular directions. During the 2 October 2013 shock event, both parallel and perpendicular flux enhancements lasted more than 20min with larger fluxes observed in the perpendicular direction. In contrast, for the 15 March 2013 shock event, the low-energy perpendicular ion fluxes increased only in the first 5min during an impulse of electric field, while the parallel flux enhancement lasted more than 30min. In addition, ionospheric outflows were observed after shock arrivals. From a simple particle motion calculation, we found that the rapid response of low-energy ions is due to drifts of plasmaspheric population by the enhanced electric field. However, the fast acceleration in the perpendicular direction cannot solely be explained by ExB drift but betatron acceleration also plays a role. Adiabatic acceleration may also explain the fast response of the enhanced parallel ion fluxes, while ion outflows may contribute to the enhanced parallel fluxes that last longer than the perpendicular fluxes.

Abstract:Particle energization and energy dissipation in electromagnetic environments are longstanding topics of intensive research in space, laboratory, and astrophysical plasmas. One challenge is to understand these conversion processes at smaller and smaller spatial/temporal scales. In this Letter, with very high cadence measurements of particle distributions from the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft, we report evidence of evolution of an identified microscale (i.e., electron gyro-scale) magnetic cavity structure and reveal within it a unique energization process that does not adhere to prevailing adiabatic invariance theory. Our finding indicates that this process is largely energy dependent, and can accelerate/decelerate charged particles inside the trapping region during their gyromotion, clearly altering the particle distribution.

Abstract:We investigate the coupling between the solar wind and the magnetospheric cusp during the passage of a Corotating Interaction Region (CIR) high-speed stream. A CIR event on 11 January 2002 is selected for this study. We use ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer) and Geotail plasma and magnetic field data for interplanetary solar wind observations and Cluster plasma and magnetic field data for the cusp observations. The response of the solar wind on the polar cusp was studied and made visible with the wavelet and cross-wavelet analysis. During the CIR event we observe significantly enhanced wave power for waves with periods ranging from 15 to 25 min (1.1-0.7 mHz). Significant cross-correlation power of the ACE and Geotail interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz- and Ey-component and the solar wind Vx-component versus the Cluster cusp H+ density, the thermal temperature and energetic electron flux (50-244 key) were found at the corresponding frequencies. We conclude that the solar wind Alfven waves affect the magnetospheric dayside cusp density and heat the cusp. We interpret these correlation results as evidence of high-speed solar wind-magnetosphere coupling driven by waves in the solar wind. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:An important source of the terrestrial magnetospheric plasma is the Earth's ionospheric outflows from the high‐latitude regions of both hemispheres. The ionospheric ion outflows have rarely been observed at the dayside magnetopause. We report Cluster observations of the ionospheric ion outflows observed at the dayside magnetopause. The low‐energy (up to 1.5 keV) electrons are detected with bidirectional pitch angle distributions indicating that the magnetic field lines are closed. The unidirectional cold ions (< 200 eV) are observed in the magnetosphere by both C1 and C3. The pitch angle distributions (0 ∘ –75 ∘ ) of the cold ions (< 1 keV) at the dayside magnetopause indicate that these cold ions are the ionospheric outflows coming only from the Southern Hemisphere. The cold ions (< 200 eV) fluxes are modulated by the ULF wave electric field. Two different species (possibly H + and He + ) are observed in the magnetosphere. Our results suggest that the ionospheric outflows can directly reach the dayside magnetopause region and may participate in the reconnection process.
