Abstract:Using the recently developed PPMLR-MHD code, we present 3D global simulation of the interaction of the interplanetary(IP) shock with the magnetosphere with emphasis on the the effect of shock orientation. We investigate its impact on the sudden commencement(SC) of geomagnetic storms and the magnetospheric responses. Generally speaking, a highly oblique shock causes asymmetric compression of the magnetosphere with respect to the noon-midnight meridian, and requires more time to compress the forward part of the magnetosphere, which producing longer rise time of SC. Even if the solar wind dynamic pressure changed similarly at a solar wind monitor, the responses of the magnetosphere could vary depending on the orientation of the causative IP shock. The effect of the shock orientation is of great help to understand space weather processes.

Abstract:By separating the incident ions into directly transmitted, downstream thermalized, and diffuse ions, we perform one-dimensional (1D) hybrid simulations to investigate ion dynamics at a supercritical quasi-parallel shock. In the simulations, the angle between the upstream magnetic field and shock nominal direction is θBn=30°, and the Alfven Mach number is MA∼5.5. The shock exhibits a periodic reformation process. The ion reflection occurs at the beginning of the reformation cycle. Part of the reflected ions is trapped between the old and new shock fronts for an extended time period. These particles eventually form superthermal diffuse ions after they escape to the upstream of the new shock front at the end of the reformation cycle. The other reflected ions may return to the shock immediately or be trapped between the old and new shock fronts for a short time period. When the amplitude of the new shock front exceeds that of the old shock front and the reformation cycle is finished, these ions become thermalized ions in the downstream. No noticeable heating can be found in the directly transmitted ions. The relevance of our simulations to the satellite observations is also discussed in the paper.
Properties of A Supercritical Quasi-Perpendicular Interplanetary Shock Propagating in Super-Alfvénic Solar Wind: from MHD to Kinetic Scales

Abstract:We investigate the properties of an interplanetary shock (MA=3.0, θBn=80°) propagating in Super-Alfvénic solar wind observed on September 12th, 1999 with in situ Wind/MFI and Wind/3DP observations. Key results are obtained concerning the possible energy dissipation mechanisms across the shock and how the shock modifies the ambient solar wind at MHD and kinetic scales: (1) Waves observed in the far upstream of the shock are incompressional and mostly shear Alfvén waves. (2) In the downstream, the shocked solar wind shows both Alfvénic and mirror-mode features due to the coupling between the Alfvén waves and ion mirror-mode waves. (3) Specularly reflected gyrating ions, whistler waves, and ion cyclotron waves are observed around the shock ramp, indicating that the shock may rely on both particle reflection and wave-particle interactions for energy dissipation. (4) Both ion cyclotron and mirror mode instabilities may be excited in the downstream of the shock since the proton temperature anisotropy touches their thresholds due to the enhanced proton temperature anisotropy. (5) Whistler heat flux instabilities excited around the shock give free energy for the whistler precursors, which help explain the isotropic electron number and energy flux together with the normal betatron acceleration of electrons across the shock. (6) The shock may be somehow connected to the electron foreshock region of the Earth’s bow shock, since Bx > 0, By < 0, and the electron flux varies only when the electron pitch angles are less than PA = 90°, which should be further investigated. Furthermore, the interaction between Alfvén waves and the shock and how the shock modifies the properties of the Alfvén waves are also discussed.
Suprathermal Proton Spectra at Interplanetary Shocks in Hybrid Simulations

Abstract:Interplanetary shocks are one of the proposed sources of suprathermal ion populations (i.e., ions with energies of a few times the solar wind energy). Here, we present results from a series of three-dimensional hybrid simulations of collisionless shocks in the solar wind. We focus on the influence of the shock-normal angle, $\theta_{Bn}$, and the shock speed, $V_s$, on producing protons with energies a few to hundreds of times the thermal energy of the upstream plasma. The combined effects of $\theta_{Bn}$ and $V_s$ result in shocks with Alfvén Mach numbers in the range 3.0 to 6.0 and fast magnetosonic Mach numbers in the range 2.5 to 5.0, representing moderate to strong interplanetary shocks. We find that $\theta_{Bn}$ largely organizes the shape of proton energy spectra while shock speed controls acceleration efficiency. All shocks accelerate protons at the shock front but the spectral evolution depends on $\theta_{Bn}$. Shocks with $\theta_{Bn} \geq 60^\circ$ produce isolated bursts of suprathermal protons at the shock front while shocks with $\theta_{Bn} \leq 45^\circ$ create suprathermal beams upstream of the shock. Downstream proton energy spectra have exponential or smoothed broken power-law forms when $\theta_{Bn} \geq 45^\circ$, and a single power-law form when $\theta_{Bn} \leq 30^\circ$. Protons downstream of the strongest shocks have energies at least 100 times the upstream thermal energy, with $\theta_{Bn} \leq 30^\circ$ shocks producing the highest energy protons and $\theta_{Bn} \geq 60^\circ$ shocks producing the largest number of protons with energies at least a few times the thermal energy.

Abstract:Context.Interplanetary collisionless shocks are known to be sources of energetic charged particles up to hundreds of MeV. However, the underlying acceleration mechanisms are still under debate.Aims.We determine the properties of suprathermal protons accelerated by the interplanetary shock on 2021 November 3 with the unprecedented high-resolution measurements by the SupraThermal Electron Proton sensor of the Energetic Particle Detector on board the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, in order to constrain the potential shock acceleration mechanisms.Methods.We first reconstructed the pitch-angle distributions (PADs) of suprathermal protons in the solar wind frame. Then, we studied the evolution of the PADs, the temporal flux profile, and the velocity distribution function of this proton population close to the shock and compared the observations to theoretical predictions.Results.We find that the suprathermal proton fluxes peak ∼12 to ∼24 s before the shock in the upstream region. The proton fluxes rapidly decrease by ∼50% in a thin layer (∼8000 km) adjacent to the shock in the downstream region and become constant farther downstream. Furthermore, the proton velocity distribution functions in the upstream (downstream) region fit a double power law,f(v)∼v−γ, at ∼1000 − 3600 km s−1, with aγof ∼3.4 ± 0.2 (∼4.3 ± 0.7) at velocities (v) below a break at ∼1800 ± 100 km s−1(∼1600 ± 200 km s−1) and aγof ∼5.8 ± 0.3 (∼5.8 ± 0.2) at velocities higher than this. These indices are all smaller than predicted by first-order Fermi acceleration. In addition, the proton PADs in the covered pitch-angle range show anisotropies in the direction away from the shock in the region close to the upstream region and become nearly isotropic farther upstream, while downstream of the shock, they show a tendency of anisotropies towards 90° PA.Conclusions.These results suggest that the acceleration of suprathermal protons at interplanetary shocks are dynamic on a timescale of ∼10 s, that is, few proton gyroperiods. Furthermore, shock-drift acceleration likely plays an important role in accelerating these suprathermal protons.

Abstract:The evolution of coronal mass ejection/shock system is investigated by numerically solving the usual set of two-dimensional single-fluid polytropic magnetohydrodynamic equations from 1 Rs to 1 AU in the meridian plane. The simulation result reveals that the coronal mass ejection/shock system formed near the sun evolves into the magnetic cloud/shock system near the earth’s orbit through the following three phases: the initial formation, the dominant latitudinal expansion and the similar expansion.

Abstract:Solar Orbiter, a mission developed by the European Space Agency, explores in situ plasma across the inner heliosphere while providing remote-sensing observations of the Sun. Our study examines particle observations for the 30 October 2021 shock. The particles provide clear evidence of ion reflection up to several minutes upstream of the shock. Additionally, the magnetic and electric field observations contain complex electromagnetic structures near the shock, and we aim to investigate how they are connected to ion dynamics. The main goal of this study is to advance our understanding of the complex coupling between particles and the shock structure in high Mach number regimes of interplanetary shocks. We used observations of magnetic and electric fields, probe-spacecraft potential, and thermal and energetic particles to characterize the structure of the shock front and particle dynamics. Furthermore, ion velocity distribution functions were used to study reflected ions and their coupling to the shock. To determine shock parameters and study waves, we used several methods, including cold plasma theory, singular-value decomposition, minimum variance analysis, and shock Rankine-Hugoniot relations. To support the analysis and interpretation of the experimental data, test-particle analysis, and hybrid particle in-cell simulations were used. The ion velocity distribution functions show clear evidence of particle reflection in the form of backstreaming ions several minutes upstream. The shock structure has complex features at the ramp and whistler precursors. The backstreaming ions may be modulated by the complex shock structure, and the whistler waves are likely driven by gyrating ions in the foot. Supra-thermal ions up to 20 keV were observed, but shock-accelerated particles with energies above this were not.

The Pitch-angle Distributions of Suprathermal Ions Near an Interplanetary Shock

Abstract:We present a case study of the pitch-angle distributions (PADs) of suprathermal H+, He2+ at ∼10–40 keV/nuc and He+ at ∼8–20 keV/nuc near a reverse shock of a stream interaction region observed by the Plasma and Suprathermal Ion Composition instrument on board the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory Ahead spacecraft on 2008 March 9. We find that in both the downstream and upstream region close to the shock, the shocked particles of all three species appear to have a power-law-like spectrum at these suprathermal energies. The PADs of these three species show very similar behavior: in the downstream region, the phase space density appears to be significantly higher in the direction perpendicular to the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) than in the parallel direction, along which particles accelerated at the shock front are supposed to escape into the downstream region. In the upstream region, the PADs of all three species show a clear beam in the direction antiparallel to the IMF due to the escaping particles from the shock into the upstream region. In addition, we find that suprathermal He+ shows a signature of bidirectional beams in the upstream region very close to the shock. These results suggest that H+, He2+ at ∼10–40 keV/nuc and He+ at ∼8–20 keV/nuc could be accelerated similarly at interplanetary shocks and that shock drift acceleration likely plays an important role in the in situ acceleration of low-energy suprathermal ions.
The Importance of Heat Flux in Quasi-Parallel Collisionless Shocks

Abstract:Collisionless plasma shocks are a common feature of many space and astrophysical systems and are sources of high-energy particles and non-thermal emission, channeling as much as 20\% of the shock's energy into non-thermal particles. The generation and acceleration of these non-thermal particles have been extensively studied, however, how these particles feed back on the shock hydrodynamics has not been fully treated. This work presents the results of self-consistent hybrid particle-in-cell simulations that show the effect of self-generated non-thermal particle populations on the nature of collisionless, quasi-parallel shocks. They contribute to a significant heat flux density upstream of the shock. Non-thermal particles downstream of the shock leak into the upstream region, taking energy away from the shock. This increases the compression ratio, slows the shock down, and flattens the non-thermal population's spectral index for lower Mach number shocks. We incorporate this into a revised theory for the Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions that include this effect and it shows excellent agreement with simulations. The results have the potential to explain discrepancies between predictions and observations in a wide range of systems, such as inaccuracies of predictions of arrival times of coronal mass ejections and the conflicting radio and x-ray observations of intracluster shocks. These effects will likely need to be included in fluid modeling to accurately predict shock evolution.

Rapid Enhancement of Low-Energy (< 100ev) Ion Flux in Response to Interplanetary Shocks Based on Two Van Allen Probes Case Studies: Implications for Source Regions and Heating Mechanisms

Abstract:Interactions between interplanetary (IP) shocks and the Earth's magnetosphere manifest many important space physics phenomena including low-energy ion flux enhancements and particle acceleration. In order to investigate the mechanisms driving shock-induced enhancement of low-energy ion flux, we have examined two IP shock events that occurred when the Van Allen Probes were located near the equator while ionospheric and ground observations were available around the spacecraft footprints. We have found that, associated with the shock arrival, electromagnetic fields intensified, and low-energy ion fluxes, including H+, He+, and O+, were enhanced dramatically in both the parallel and perpendicular directions. During the 2 October 2013 shock event, both parallel and perpendicular flux enhancements lasted more than 20min with larger fluxes observed in the perpendicular direction. In contrast, for the 15 March 2013 shock event, the low-energy perpendicular ion fluxes increased only in the first 5min during an impulse of electric field, while the parallel flux enhancement lasted more than 30min. In addition, ionospheric outflows were observed after shock arrivals. From a simple particle motion calculation, we found that the rapid response of low-energy ions is due to drifts of plasmaspheric population by the enhanced electric field. However, the fast acceleration in the perpendicular direction cannot solely be explained by ExB drift but betatron acceleration also plays a role. Adiabatic acceleration may also explain the fast response of the enhanced parallel ion fluxes, while ion outflows may contribute to the enhanced parallel fluxes that last longer than the perpendicular fluxes.

Abstract:We carry out two-dimensional global particle-in-cell simulations of the interaction between the solar wind and a dipole field to study the formation of the bow shock and magnetosphere. A self-reforming bow shock ahead of a dipole field is presented by using relatively high temporal-spatial resolutions. We find that (1) the bow shock and the magnetosphere are formed and reach a quasi-stable state after several ion cyclotron periods, and (2) under the B-z southward solar wind condition, the bow shock undergoes a self-reformation for low beta(i) and high M-A. Simultaneously, a magnetic reconnection in the magnetotail is found. For high beta(i) and low M-A, the shock becomes quasi-stationary, and the magnetotail reconnection disappears. In addition, (3) the magnetopause deflects the magnetosheath plasmas. The sheath particles injected at the quasi-perpendicular region of the bow shock can be convected downstream of an oblique shock region. A fraction of these sheath particles can leak out from the magnetosheath at the wings of the bow shock. Hence, the downstream situation is more complicated than that for a planar shock produced in local simulations.
Properties of a Supercritical Quasi-perpendicular Interplanetary Shock Propagating in the Terrestrial Foreshock Region

Abstract:We investigate the properties of an interplanetary (IP) shock (M (f) = 2.1, theta = 80 degrees) that was detected by Wind on 1999 September 12 and was magnetically connected to the terrestrial bow shock. Key results are obtained concerning how the IP shock modifies the terrestrial foreshock electron and ion dynamics: (1) Intensive Langmuir waves were detected downstream of the IP shock due to the enhanced penetrating terrestrial foreshock electron beams. (2) Whistler heat flux instabilities associated with the oblique precursor whistler pitch-angle scatter the suprathermal electrons, together with the normal betatron acceleration that occurs across the IP shock. (3) The IP shock interacts with the antisunward propagating Alfven waves/fluctuations, and the shocked plasma shows both Alfvenic and mirror-mode features where Alfven waves were separated into two parts propagating in opposite directions. (4) Intense specularly reflected gyrating ions were detected around the IP shock, which indicates that the energy dissipation effects at the IP shock depend on both reflected ions and the waves intrinsic to the shock. These results provide new insights into the interaction between an IP shock and the terrestrial foreshock.
Interplanetary Shocks Between 0.3 and 1.0 Au: Helios 1 and 2 Observations

Abstract:The Helios 1 (H1) and Helios 2 (H2) spacecraft measured the solar winds at a distance between ∼0.3 and 1.0 au from the Sun. With increasing heliocentric distance (r h), the plasma speed is found to increase at ∼34–40 km s−1 au−1 and the density exhibits a sharper fall ( rh−2 ) compared to the magnetic field magnitude ( rh−1.5 ) and the temperature ( rh−0.8 ). Using all available solar wind plasma and magnetic field measurements, we identified 68 and 39 fast interplanetary shocks encountered by H1 and H2, respectively. The overwhelming majority (85%) of the shocks are found to be driven by interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs). While the two spacecraft encountered more than 73 solar wind high-speed streams (HSSs), only ∼22% had shocks at the boundaries of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) formed by the HSSs. All of the ICME shocks were found to be fast forward (FF) shocks; only four of the CIR shocks were fast reverse shocks. Among all ICME FF shocks (CIR FF shocks), 60% (75%) are quasi-perpendicular with shock normal angles (θ Bn) ≥ 45° relative to the upstream ambient magnetic field, and 40% (25%) are quasi-parallel (θ Bn < 45°). No radial dependences were found in FF shock normal angle and speed. The FF shock Mach number (M ms), magnetic field, and plasma compression ratios are found to increase with increasing r h at the rates of 0.72, 0.89, and 0.98 au−1, respectively. On average, ICME FF shocks are found to be considerably faster (∼20%) and stronger (with ∼28% higher M ms) than CIR FF shocks.
Suprathermal Electron Evolution under the Competition Between Plasmaspheric Plume Hiss Wave Heating and Collisional Cooling

Abstract:Suprathermal electrons are a major heat source of ionospheric plasma. How the suprathermal electrons evolve during their bounces inside the plasmasphere is a fundamental question for the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. On the basis of Van Allen Probes observations and quasi-linear simulations, we present here the first quantitative study on the evolution of suprathermal electrons under the competition between Landau heating by whistler mode hiss waves and Coulomb collisional cooling by background plasma inside a plasmaspheric plume. We show that the Landau heating can prevail over the collisional cooling for>50 eV electrons and cause the field-aligned suprathermal electron fluxes to increase by up to 1 order of magnitude within 1.5 hr. Our results imply that the plasmaspheric plume hiss waves could mediate energy from the ring current electrons to the ionospheric plasma.

Abstract:Satellite observations with high-resolution measurements have demonstrated the existence of intermittent current sheets and occurrence of magnetic reconnection in a quasi-parallel magnetosheath behind the terrestrial bow shock. In this Letter, by performing a three-dimensional (3-D) global hybrid simulation, we investigated the characteristics of the quasi-parallel magnetosheath of the bow shock, which is formed due to the interaction of the solar wind with the earth’s magnetosphere. Current sheets with widths of several ion inertial lengths are found to be produced in the magnetosheath after the upstream large amplitude electromagnetic waves penetrate through the shock and are then compressed in the downstream. Magnetic reconnection consequently occurs in these current sheets, where high-speed ion flow jets are identified in the outflow region. Simultaneously, flux ropes with the extension (along the direction) of about several earth’s radii are also observed. Our simulation shed new insight on the mechanism for the occurrence of magnetic reconnection in the quasi-parallel shocked magnetosheath.

Abstract:Superhalo electrons appear to be continuously present in the interplanetary medium, even during very quiet times, with a power-law spectrum at energies above similar to 2 keV. Here we numerically investigate the generation of superhalo electrons by magnetic reconnection in the solar wind source region, using magnetohydrodynamics and test particle simulations for both single X-line reconnection and multiple X-line reconnection. We find that the direct current electric field, produced in the magnetic reconnection region, can accelerate electrons from an initial thermal energy of T similar to 10(5) K up to hundreds of keV. After acceleration, some of the accelerated electrons, together with the nascent solar wind flow driven by the reconnection, propagate upwards along the newly-opened magnetic field lines into interplanetary space, while the rest move downwards into the lower atmosphere. Similar to the observed superhalo electrons at 1 AU, the flux of upward-traveling accelerated electrons versus energy displays a power-law distribution at similar to 2 - 100 keV, f (E) similar to E-delta, with a delta of similar to 1.5 - 2.4. For single (multiple) X-line reconnection, the spectrum becomes harder (softer) as the anomalous resistivity parameter alpha (uniform resistivity eta) increases. These modeling results suggest that the acceleration in the solar wind source region may contribute to superhalo electrons.
Effects of Thomson-Scattering Geometry on White-Light Imaging of an Interplanetary Shock: Synthetic Observations from Forward Magnetohydrodynamic Modelling

Abstract:Stereoscopic white-light imaging of a large portion of the inner heliosphere has been used to track interplanetary coronal mass ejections. At large elongations from the Sun, the white-light brightness depends on both the local electron density and the efficiency of the Thomson-scattering process. To quantify the effects of the Thomson-scattering geometry, we study an interplanetary shock using forward magnetohydrodynamic simulation and synthetic white-light imaging. Identifiable as an inclined streak of enhanced brightness in a time–elongation map, the travelling shock can be readily imaged by an observer located within a wide range of longitudes in the ecliptic. Different parts of the shock front contribute to the imaged brightness pattern viewed by observers at different longitudes. Moreover, even for an observer located at a fixed longitude, a different part of the shock front will contribute to the imaged brightness at any given time. The observed brightness within each imaging pixel results from a weighted integral along its corresponding ray-path. It is possible to infer the longitudinal location of the shock from the brightness pattern in an optical sky map, based on the east–west asymmetry in its brightness and degree of polarisation. Therefore, measurement of the interplanetary polarised brightness could significantly reduce the ambiguity in performing three-dimensional reconstruction of local electron density from white-light imaging.

Abstract:Using test particle simulations we study particle acceleration at highly perpendicular (theta(Bn) >= 75 degrees) shocks under conditions of modeling magnetic turbulence. We adopt a backward-in-time method to solve the Newton-Lorentz equation using the observed shock parameters for quasi-perpendicular interplanetary shocks, and compare the simulation results with ACE/EPAM observations to obtain the injection energy and timescale of particle acceleration. With our modeling and observations, we find that a large upstream speed is responsible for efficient particle acceleration. Our results also show that the quasi-perpendicular shocks are capable of accelerating thermal particles to high energies of the order of MeV for both kappa and Maxwellian upstream distributions, which may originate from the fact that in our model, the local background magnetic field has a component parallel to the shock normal.

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shocks in general have strong impact on particles and electromagnetic field. In this study, we have examined the dynamics of cross-energy ions and plasma waves observed by the Van Allen Probe B satellite which was located near the equator at the noon sector after the impact of an IP shock on 27 Feb, 2014. We found that the ULF waves and electromagnetic waves are induced and the differential fluxes of protons with different energies increased or decreased after the IP shock arrival. For low energy ions (10-100eV), the perpendicular flux increased intensively due to ExB drift and betatron acceleration. These adiabatic processes also accounted for the special behavior of 10~200 keV ions, which are due to the positive gradient in phase space density before the IP shock arrival. In addition, the short-lived ultra-low frequency waves triggered by the IP shock interacted with the ~100 keV protons and resulting in the stripes in pitch angle distribution. Meanwhile, the anisotropic ions of ~50-300 keV generate EMIC wave at higher L shell after the shock arrival. This study reveals that an IP shock event can cause comprehensive responses of different energy ions and drive several plasma waves at the same time.
