Abstract:The evaluation of relativistic spin networks plays a fundamental role in the Barrett-Crane state sum model of Lorentzian quantum gravity in 4 dimensions. A relativistic spin network is a graph labelled by unitary irreducible representations of the Lorentz group appearing in the direct integral decomposition of the space of L^2 functions on three-dimensional hyperbolic space. To `evaluate' such a spin network we must do an integral; if this integral converges we say the spin network is `integrable'. Here we show that a large class of relativistic spin networks are integrable, including any whose underlying graph is the 4-simplex (the complete graph on 5 vertices). This proves a conjecture of Barrett and Crane, whose validity is required for the convergence of their state sum model.

Abstract:The purpose of this note is to make several advances in the interpretation of the balanced state sum model by Barrett and Crane in gr-qc/9709028 as a quantum theory of gravity. First, we outline a shortcoming of the definition of the model in pointed out to us by Barrett and Baez in private communication, and explain how to correct it. Second, we show that the classical limit of our state sum reproduces the Einstein-Hilbert lagrangian whenever the term in the state sum to which it is applied has a geometrical interpretation. Next we outline a program to demonstrate that the classical limit of the state sum is in fact dominated by terms with geometrical meaning. This uses in an essential way the alteration we have made to the model in order to fix the shortcoming discussed in the first section. Finally, we make a brief discussion of the Minkowski signature version of the model.

Abstract:This paper aims at studying the spin once again. The departure point is thus the Stern and Gerlach experimental results that can be described in a coherent way in the frame of quantum mechanics only. Instead, the relativistic mechanics point of view is proposed here following the work presented in a previous article about rigid body rotation. Indeed, a careful study of the horizon of this relativistic rigid body rotation appears to be invariant from any observation angle in full agreement with the spin property.

Abstract:We give the construction modulo normalization of a new state sum model for lorentzian quantum general relativity, using the construction of Dirac's expansors to include quantum operators corresponding to edge lengths as well as the quantum bivectors of the Barrett-Crane model, and discuss the problem of its normalization. The new model gives rise to a new picture of quantum geometry in which lengths come in a discrete spectrum, while areas have a continuum of values.

Abstract:The no-go theorems of Bell and Kochen and Specker could be interpreted as implying that the notions of system and experimental context are fundamentally inseparable. In this interpretation, statements such as "spin is 'up' along direction $x$" are relational statements about the configurations of macroscopic devices which are mediated by the spin and not about any intrinsic properties of the spin. The operational meaning of these statements is provided by the practically infinite resources of macroscopic devices that serve to define the notion of a direction in three-dimensional space. This is the subject of "textbook quantum mechanics": The description of quantum systems in relation to an experimental context.. Can one go beyond that? Relational quantum mechanics endeavors to provide a relational description between any quantum systems without the necessity of involving macroscopic devices. However, by applying "textbook quantum mechanics" in such situations, it implicitly assumes infinite resources, even for simple quantum systems such as spins, which have no capacity to define an experimental context. This leads to conceptual difficulties. We analyse Penrose's spin network proposal as a potential formalisation of quantum theory that goes beyond the textbook framework: A description in presence of finite resources, which is inherently relational and inseparable in the system-context entity.

A Physically Meaningful Relativistic Description of the Spin State of an Electron

Abstract:We introduced a new model to present the states of a two-state quantum system. The space is the complexified Minkowski space. The Lorentz group acts by the linear extension of its action on the four-vectors. We applied this model to represent the spin state of an electron or any relativistic spin 1/2 particle. The spin state of such particle is of the form U+iS, where U is the four-velocity of the particle in the lab frame, and S is the 4D spin in this frame. Under this description, the transition probability between two pure spin states ρ1 and ρ2 of particles moving with the same velocity are defined by use of Minkowski dot product as 12 . This transition probability is Lorentz invariant, coincide with the quantum mechanics prediction and thus agree with the experimental results testing quantum mechanics predictions based on Bell’s inequality. For a a particle of mass m and charge q with the spin state ρ, the total momentum is mcρ and the electromagnetic momentum is qρ. This imply that the Landé g factor for such particles must be g=2. We obtain an evolution equation of the spin state in an electromagnetic field which defines correctly the anomalous Zeeman effect and the fine structure splitting.
Relativistic spin sum rules and the role of the pivot

Abstract:Spin sum rules depend on the choice of a pivot, i.e. the point about which the angular momentun is defined, usually identified with the center of the nucleon. The latter is however not unique in a relativistic theory and has led to apparently contradictory results in the literature. Using the recently developed phase-space approach, we compute for the first time the contribution associated with the motion of the center of the nucleon, and we derive a general spin sum rule which reduces to established results after appropriate choices for the pivot and the spin component.

Abstract:We investigate spatial reflection and associated nonlocal order in spin chain quantum systems. The proposed string order parameters, e.g., reflected via operations of the spatial reflection or combinations of it with spin reflection, are able to characterize a variety of physical systems and allow us to gain renewed insights to the statistical mechanism underlying phenomena such as the Haldane gap and quantum phase transitions. Besides revealing further the potential application of the generalized parity symmetry in numerical algorithm, we build an explicit scheme to determine the symmetry and the related string order for matrix product states so that one can construct ansatz models with presumed properties.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new, elementary derivation of non-relativistic spin using exclusively real algebraic methods. To do this, we formulate a novel method to decompose the domain of a real endomorphism according to its algebraic properties. We reveal non-commutative multipole tensors as the primary physically meaningful observables of spin, and indicate that spin is fundamentally geometric in nature. In so doing, we demonstrate that neither dynamics nor complex numbers are essential to the fundamental description of spin.

Abstract:A consistent theory of quantum entanglement requires that constituent single-particle states belong to the same Hilbert space, the coherent eigenstates of a complete set of operators in a given representation, defined with respect to a shared continuous parameterization. Formulating such eigenstates for a single relativistic particle with spin, and applying them to the description of many-body states, presents well-known challenges. In this paper, we review the covariant theory of relativistic spin and entanglement in a framework first proposed by Stueckelberg and developed by Horwitz, Piron, et al. This approach modifies Wigner's method by introducing an arbitrary timelike unit vector nμ and then inducing a representation of SL(2,C), based on pμ rather than on the spacetime momentum. Generalizing this approach, we construct relativistic spin states on an extended phase space {(xμ,pμ),(ζμ,πμ)}, inducing a representation on the momentum πμ, thus providing a novel dynamical interpretation of the timelike unit vector nμ=πμ/M. Studying the unitary representations of the Poincaré group on the extended phase space allows us to define basis quantities for quantum states and develop the gauge invariant electromagnetic Hamiltonian in classical and quantum mechanics. We write plane wave solutions for free particles and construct stable singlet states, and relate these to experiments involving temporal interference, analogous to the spatial interference known from double slit experiments.

Abstract:The majority of current understanding of the quantum correlations is in the field of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. To develop quantum information and computation tasks fully, one must inevitably take into account the relativistic effects. In this regard, the spin is one of the central tools. For this purpose, it is of paramount importance to understand and characterize fully the theory of spin in relativistic quantum information theory where the spin states act as qubit. This area is still far from being resolved. As a result, this article will explore the recent studies of the concepts of the spin and spin quantum correlations in inertial frames and some apparent paradoxes regarding this concept. We will mainly focus on the problem of characterizing the spin, reduced spin density matrices and spin quantum correlations in inertial reference frames and the apparent paradoxes involved therein. Another important aspect is the use of tools of quantum field theory to extend several concepts in non-relativistic domain to relativistic one. In this regard, we analyze the development of the theory of relativistic secret sharing and a correlation measure namely the entanglement of purification.

Abstract:Noticing renewed or increasing interest in the possibility to describe semirelativistic bound states (of either spin-zero constituents or, upon confining oneself to spin-averaged features, constituents with nonzero spin) by means of the spinless Salpeter equation generalizing the Schrödinger equation towards incorporation of effects caused by relativistic kinematics, we revisit this problem for interactions between bound-state constituents of Yukawa shape, by recalling and applying several well-known tools enabling to constrain the resulting spectra.

Abstract:The physics of the paradigmatic one-dimensional transverse field quantum Ising model $J \sum_{\langle i,j \rangle} \sigma^x_i \sigma^x_j + h \sum_i \sigma^z_i$ is well-known. Instead, let us imagine "applying" the transverse field via a transverse Ising coupling of the spins to partner auxiliary spins, i.e. $H= J_x \sum_{\langle i,j \rangle} \sigma^x_i \sigma^x_j + J_z \sum_i \sigma^z_i \sigma^z_{\text{partner of }i}$. If each spin of the chain has a unique auxiliary partner, then the resultant eigenspectrum is still the same as that of the quantum Ising model with $\frac{h}{J} = \frac{J_z}{J_x}$ and the degeneracy of the entire spectrum is $2^{\text{number of auxiliary spins}}$. We can interpret this as the auxiliary spins remaining paramagnetic down to zero temperature and an extensive ground state entropy. This follows from the existence of extensively large and mutually «anticommuting»$\;$ sets of $local$ conserved quantities for $H$. Such a structure will be shown to be not unnatural in the class of bond-dependent Hamiltonians. In the above quantum Ising model inspired example of $H$, this is lost upon the loss of the unique partner condition for the full spin chain. Other cases where such degeneracy survives or gets lost are also discussed. Thus this is more general and forms the basis for an exact statement on the existence of extensive ground state entropy in any dimension. Furthermore this structure can be used to prove spin liquidity non-perturbatively in the ground state manifold. Higher-dimensional quantum spin liquid constructions based on this are given which may evade a quasiparticle description.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate a correspondence among spin and vertex models with the same number of local states on the square lattice with toroidal boundary conditions. We argue that the partition functions of an arbitrary $n$-state spin model and of a certain specific $n$-state vertex model coincide for finite lattice sizes. The equivalent vertex model has $n^3$ non-null Boltzmann weights and their relationship with the edge weights of the spin model is explicitly presented. In particular, the Ising model in a magnetic field is mapped to an eight-vertex model whose weights configurations combine both even and odd number of incoming and outcoming arrows at a vertex. We have studied the Yang-Baxter algebra for such mixed eight-vertex model when the weights are invariant under arrows reversing. We find that while the Lax operator lie on the same elliptic curve of the even eight-vertex model the respective $\mathrm{R}$-matrix can not be presented in terms of the difference of two rapidities. We also argue that the spin-vertex equivalence may be used to imbed an integrable spin model in the realm of the quantum inverse scattering framework. As an example, we show how to determine the $\mathrm{R}$-matrix of the 27-vertex model equivalent to a three-state spin model devised by Fateev and Zamolodchikov.

Abstract:We extend a 2d topological model of the gravitational path integral to include sums over spin structure, corresponding to Neveu-Schwarz (NS) or Ramond (R) boundary conditions for fermions. This path integral corresponds to a correlator of boundary creation operators on a non-trivial baby universe Hilbert space, and vanishes when the number of R boundaries is odd. This vanishing implies a non-factorization of the correlator, which necessitates a dual interpretation of the bulk path integral in terms of a product of partition functions (associated to NS boundaries) and Witten indices (associated to R boundaries), averaged over an ensemble of theories with varying Hilbert space dimension and different numbers of bosonic and fermionic states. We also consider a model with End-of-the-World (EOW) branes, for which the dual ensemble then includes a sum over randomly chosen fermionic and bosonic states. We propose two modifications of the bulk path integral which restore an interpretation in a single dual theory: (i) a geometric prescription where we add extra boundaries with a sum over their spin structures, and (ii) an algebraic prescription involving "spacetime D-branes". We extend our ideas to Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, and propose a dual description of a single unitary theory with spin structure in a system with eigenbranes.

Spin supplementary condition in quantum field theory: covariant SSC and physical state projection

Abstract:The spin supplementary conditions are constraints on spin degrees of freedom in classical relativity which restricts physical degrees of freedom to rotations. It is argued that the equivalent constraints in quantum field theory are the projection conditions on polarisation tensors, which remove timelike/longitudinal polarisations from the physical spectrum. The claim is supported by three examples of massive spinning particles coupled to electromagnetism: Dirac and Proca fields in quantum field theory, and $\mathcal{N} = 1$ worldline QFT for classical worldline theory. This suggests a resolution to the apparent discrepancy between effective field theory description of massive higher-spin fields~\cite{Bern:2020buy,Bern:2022kto} and post-Newtonian effective field theory of spinning classical particles~\cite{Levi:2015msa}, where the former admits more unfixed parameters compared to the latter; the additional parameters are fixed by projection conditions and therefore are not tunable parameters.

Abstract:Recently the $\text{SU}(2)$ spin-network states in loop quantum gravity is generalized to those of the corresponding affine Lie algebra. We show that if one literally starts from the full $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ group, this procedure naturally leads to the Bekenstein-Hawking formula of the entanglement entropy for any macroscopic spacetime region. This suggests that a smooth spacetime geometry could be recovered in such a way, as conjectured by Bianchi and Myers. Some comparison with Xiao-Gang Wen's string-net picture of gauge theory is made.

The SO(4,C) Barret-Crane interwiner is unique. The propagators of the SO(4,C) Barrett-Crane model are discussed. The asymptotic limit of the SO(4,C) general relativity is discussed. The asymptotic limit is controlled by the SO(4,C) Regge calculus.

Abstract:Spin network technique is usually generalized to relativistic case by changing SO group – Euclidean counterpart of the Lorentz group – to its universal spin covering SU SU , or by using the representations of SO Lorentz group. We extend this approach by using inhomogeneous Lorentz group , which results in the simplification of the spin network technique. The labels on the network graph corresponding to the subgroup of translations make the intertwiners into the products of SU parts and the energy-momentum conservation delta functions. This maps relativistic spin networks to usual Feynman diagrams for the matter fields.
