Abstract:The Haldane–Shastry spin chain has a myriad of remarkable properties, including Yangian symmetry and, for spin 1/2, explicit highest-weight eigenvectors featuring (the case α = 1/2 of) Jack polynomials. This stems from the spin-Calogero–Sutherland model, which reduces to Haldane–Shastry in a special 'freezing' limit. In this work we clarify various points that, to the best of our knowledge, were missing in the literature. We have two main results. First, we show that freezing the fermionic spin-1/2 Calogero–Sutherland model naturally accounts for the precise form of the Haldane–Shastry wave functions, including the Vandermonde factor squared. Second, we use the fermionic framework to prove the claim of Bernard–Gaudin–Haldane–Pasquier that the Yangian highest-weight eigenvectors of the SU(r)-version of the Haldane–Shastry chain arise by freezing SU(r−1) spin-Calogero–Sutherland eigenvectors at α = 1/2.

Abstract:Quantum Calogero-Moser spin system is a superintegable system with the spectrum of commuting Hamiltonians that can be described entirely in terms of representation theory of corresponding simple Lie group. In this paper the underlying Lie group G is a compact connected, simply connected simple Lie group. It has a natural generalization known as quantum Calogero-Moser spin chain. In the first part of the paper we show that quantum Calogero-Moser spin chain is a quantum superintegrable systems. Then we show that the Euclidean multi-time propagator for this model can be written as a partition function of a two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on a cylinder. Then we argue that the two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with Wilson loops with "outer ends" should be regarded as the theory on space times with non-removable corners. Partition functions of such theory satisfy non-stationary Calogero-Moser equations.

Abstract:We establish a direct connection between inhomogeneous XX spin chains (or free fermion systems with nearest-neighbors hopping) and certain QES models on the line giving rise to a family of weakly orthogonal polynomials. We classify all such models and their associated XX chains, which include two families related to the Lamé (finite gap) quantum potential on the line. For one of these chains, we numerically compute the Rényi bipartite entanglement entropy at half filling and derive an asymptotic approximation thereof by studying the model's continuous limit, which turns out to describe a massless Dirac fermion on a suitably curved background. We show that the leading behavior of the entropy is that of a $c=1$ critical system, although there is a subleading $\log(\log N)$ correction (where $N$ is the number of sites) unusual in this type of models.

Quantum Spin Chains and Symmetric Functions

Abstract:We consider the question of what quantum spin chains naturally encode in their Hilbert space. It turns out that quantum spin chains are rather rich systems, naturally encoding solutions to various problems in combinatorics, group theory, and algebraic geometry. In the case of the XX Heisenberg spin chain these are given by skew Kostka numbers, skew characters of the symmetric group, and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. As we show, this is revealed by a fermionic representation of the theory of "quantized" symmetric functions formulated by Fomin and Greene, which provides a powerful framework for constructing operators extracting this data from the Hilbert space of quantum spin chains. Furthermore, these operators are diagonalized by the Bethe basis of the quantum spin chain. Underlying this is the fact that quantum spin chains are examples of "quantum integrable systems." This is somewhat analogous to bosons encoding permanents and fermions encoding determinants. This points towards considering quantum integrable systems, and the combinatorics associated with them, as potentially interesting targets for quantum computers.

Abstract:We study quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnetic chains with dilute random antiferromagnetic impurity bonds with the modified spin-wave theory. By describing thermal excitations in the language of spin waves, we observe a low-temperature Curie susceptibility due to the formation of large spin clusters first predicted by the real-space renormalization-group approach, as well as a crossover to a pure ferromagnetic spin-chain behavior at intermediate and high temperatures. We compare our results of the modified spin-wave theory to quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:We study the trigonometric quantum spin-Calogero-Sutherland model, and the Haldane-Shastry spin chain as a special case, using a Bethe-ansatz analysis. We harness the model's Yangian symmetry to import the standard tools of integrability for Heisenberg spin chains into the world of integrable long-range models with spins. From the transfer matrix with a diagonal twist we construct Heisenberg-style symmetries (Bethe algebra) that refine the usual hierarchy of commuting Hamiltonians (quantum determinant) of the spin-Calogero-Sutherland model. We compute the first few of these new conserved charges explicitly, and diagonalise them by Bethe ansatz inside each irreducible Yangian representation. This yields a new eigenbasis for the spin-Calogero-Sutherland model that generalises the Yangian Gelfand-Tsetlin basis of Takemura and Uglov. The Bethe-ansatz analysis involves non-generic values of the inhomogeneities. Our review of the inhomogeneous Heisenberg XXX chain, with special attention to how the Bethe ansatz works in the presence of fusion, may be of independent interest.

Exploring quantum coherence, spin squeezing and entanglement in an extended spin-1/2 XX Chain

Abstract:In this study, we explore the ground state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 XX chain model, which features $XZY-YZX$ type three-spin interactions (TSI). This model, while seemingly simple, reveals a rich tapestry of quantum behaviors. Our analysis relies on several key metrics. The '$l_1$-norm of coherence' helps us identify coherent states within the phase diagram, which represent states capable of superposition and interference. We employ the 'spin squeezing parameter' to pinpoint unique coherent states characterized by isotropic noise in all directions, making them invaluable for quantum metrology. Additionally, we utilize the 'entanglement entropy' to determine which of these coherent states exhibit entanglement, indicating states that cannot be fully described by local variables. Our research unveils diverse regions within the phase diagram, each characterized by coherent, squeezed, or entangled states, offering insights into the quantum phenomena underling these systems. We also study the critical scaling versus the system size for the mentioned quantities.

The deformed Inozemtsev spin chain

Abstract:The Inozemtsev chain is an exactly solvable interpolation between the short-range Heisenberg and long-range Haldane-Shastry (HS) chains. In order to unlock its potential to study spin interactions with tunable interaction range using the powerful tools of integrability, the model's mathematical properties require better understanding. As a major step in this direction, we present a new generalisation of the Inozemtsev chain with spin symmetry reduced to U(1), interpolating between a Heisenberg xxz chain and the xxz-type HS chain, and integrable throughout. Underlying it is a new quantum many-body system that extends the elliptic Ruijsenaars system by including spins, contains the trigonometric spin-Ruijsenaars-Macdonald system as a special case, and yields our spin chain by 'freezing'. Our models have potential applications from condensed-matter to high-energy theory, and provide a crucial step towards a general theory for long-range integrability.

Can a spin chain relate combinatorics to number theory?

Abstract:The Motzkin spin chain is a spin-$1$ frustration-free model introduced by Shor & Movassagh. The ground state is constructed by mapping random walks on the upper half of the square lattice to spin configurations. It has unusually large entanglement entropy [quantum fluctuations]. The ground state of the Motzkin chain can be analytically described by the Motzkin paths. There is no analytical description of the excited states. The model is not solvable. We simplify the model by removing one of the local equivalence moves of the Motzkin paths. The system becomes integrable [similar to the XXX spin chain]. We call it free Motzkin chain. From the point of view of quantum integrability, the model is special since its $R$-matrix does not have crossing unitarity. We solve the periodic free Motzkin chain by generalizing the functional Bethe Ansatz method. We construct a $T-Q$ relation with an additional parameter to formulate the energy spectrum. This new parameter is related to the roots of unity and can be described by the Möbius function in number theory. We observe further patterns of number theory.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss a family of models of particle and energy diffusion on a one-dimensional lattice, related to those studied previously in [Sasamoto-Wadati], [Barraquand-Corwin] and [Povolotsky] in the context of KPZ universality class. We show that they may be mapped onto an integrable $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ Heisenberg spin chain whose Hamiltonian density in the bulk has been already studied in the AdS/CFT and the integrable system literature. Using the quantum inverse scattering method, we study various new aspects, in particular we identify boundary terms, modeling reservoirs in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics models, for which the spin chain (and thus also the stochastic process) continues to be integrable. We also show how the construction of a "dual model" of probability theory is possible and useful. The fluctuating hydrodynamics of our stochastic model corresponds to the semiclassical evolution of a string that derives from correlation functions of local gauge invariant operators of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory (SYM), in imaginary-time. As any stochastic system, it has a supersymmetric completion that encodes for the thermal equilibrium theorems: we show that in this case it is equivalent to the $\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)$ superstring that has been derived directly from $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM.

Abstract:We present a categorical formalism for context-free languages with morphisms given by correspondences obtained from rational transductions. We show that D0L-systems are a special case of the correspondences that define morphisms in this category. We construct a functorial mapping to aperiodic spin chains. We then generalize this construction to a class of mildly context sensitive grammars, the multiple-context-free grammars (MCFG), with a similar functorial mapping to spin systems in higher dimensions, with Boltzmann weights describing interacting spins on vertices of hypercubes. We show that a particular motivating example for this general construction is provided by the Korepin completely integrable model on the icosahedral quasicrystal, which we construct as the spin system associated to a multiple-context-free grammar describing the geometry of the Ammann planes quasilattice. We review the main properties of this spin system, including solvability, bulk free energy, and criticality, based on results of Baxter and the known relation to the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation. We show that the latter has a generalization for the Boltzmannweights on hypercubes of the spin systems associated to more general MCFGs in terms of two dual cubulations of the n-simplex. We formulate analogous questions about bulk free energy and criticality for our construction of spin systems.

Symmetries, correlation functions, and entanglement of general quantum Motzkin spin-chains

Abstract:Motzkin spin-chains, which include 'colorless' (integer spin $s=1$) and 'colorful' ($s \geq 2$) variants, are one-dimensional (1D) local integer spin models notable for their lack of a conformal field theory (CFT) description of their low-energy physics, despite being gapless. The colorful variants are particularly unusual, as they exhibit power-law violation of the area-law of entanglement entropy (as $\sqrt{n}$ in system size $n$), rather than a logarithmic violation as seen in a CFT. In this work, we analytically discover several unique properties of these models, potentially suggesting a new universality class for their low-energy physics. We identify a complex structure of symmetries and unexpected scaling behavior in spin-spin correlations, which deviate from known 1D universality classes. Specifically, the $s=1$ chain exhibits $U(1)$ spontaneous symmetry breaking and ferromagnetic order. Meanwhile, the $s \geq 2$ chains do not appear to spontaneously break any symmetries, but display quasi-long-range algebraic order with power-law decaying correlations, inconsistent with standard Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) critical exponents. We also derive exact asymptotic scaling expressions for entanglement measures in both colorless and colorful chains, generalizing previous results of Movassagh [J. Math Phys. (2017)], while providing benchmarks for potential quantum simulation experiments. The combination of hardness of classically simulating such systems along with the analytical tractability of their ground state properties position Motzkin spin chains as intriguing candidates for exploring quantum computational advantage in simulating many-body physics.

Abstract:The asymptotics of some spin foam amplitudes for a quantum 4-simplex is known to display rapid oscillations whose frequency is the Regge action. In this paper, we reformulate this result through a difference equation, asymptotically satisfied by these models, and whose semiclassical solutions are precisely the sine and the cosine of the Regge action. This equation is then interpreted as coming from the canonical quantization of a simple constraint in Regge calculus. This suggests to lift and generalize this constraint to the phase space of loop quantum gravity parametrized by twisted geometries. The result is a reformulation of the flat model for topological BF theory from the Hamiltonian perspective. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the spin network basis gives difference equations which are exactly recursion relations on the 15j-symbol. Moreover, the semiclassical limit is investigated using coherent states, and produces the expected results. It mimics the classical constraint with quantized areas, and for Regge geometries it reduces to the semiclassical equation which has been introduced in the beginning.

Critical spin chains and loop models with $PSU(n)$ symmetry

Abstract:Starting with the Ising model, statistical models with global symmetries provide fruitful approaches to interesting physical systems, for example percolation or polymers. These include the $O(n)$ model (symmetry group $O(n)$) and the Potts model (symmetry group $S_Q$). Both models make sense for $n,Q\in \mathbb{C}$ and not just $n,Q\in \mathbb{N}$, and both give rise to a conformal field theory in the critical limit. Here, we study similar models based on the group $PSU(n)$. We focus on the two-dimensional case, where the models can be described either as gases of non-intersecting orientable loops, or as alternating spin chains. This allows us to determine their spectra either by computing a twisted torus partition function, or by studying representations of the walled Brauer algebra. In the critical limit, our models give rise to a CFT that exists for any $n\in\mathbb{C}$ and has a global $PSU(n)$ symmetry. Its spectrum is similar to those of the $O(n)$ and Potts CFTs, but a bit simpler. We conjecture that the $O(n)$ CFT is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold of the $PSU(n)$ CFT, where $\mathbb{Z}_2$ acts as complex conjugation.

Conformal Spinning Quantum Particles in Complex Minkowski Space as Constrained Nonlinear Sigma Models in U(2,2) and Born's Reciprocity

Abstract:We revise the use of 8-dimensional conformal, complex (Cartan) domains as a base for the construction of conformally invariant quantum (field) theory, either as phase or configuration spaces. We follow a gauge-invariant Lagrangian approach (of nonlinear sigma-model type) and use a generalized Dirac method for the quantization of constrained systems, which resembles in some aspects the standard approach to quantizing coadjoint orbits of a group G. Physical wave functions, Haar measures, orthonormal basis and reproducing (Bergman) kernels are explicitly calculated in and holomorphic picture in these Cartan domains for both scalar and spinning quantum particles. Similarities and differences with other results in the literature are also discussed and an extension of Schwinger's Master Theorem is commented in connection with closure relations. An adaptation of the Born's Reciprocity Principle (BRP) to the conformal relativity, the replacement of space-time by the 8-dimensional conformal domain at short distances and the existence of a maximal acceleration are also put forward.
