Abstract:We prove, with an unconditional effective error bound, the Sato-Tate distributions for two families of surfaces arising from products of elliptic curves, namely a one-parameter family of K3 surfaces and double quadric surfaces. To prove these effective Sato-Tate distributions, we prove an effective form of the joint Sato-Tate distribution for two twist-inequivalent elliptic curves, along with an effective form of the Sato-Tate distribution for an elliptic curve for primes in arithmetic progressions. The former completes the previous work of Thorner by including the cases in which one of the elliptic curves has CM.

Abstract:Generalizing the problem of counting rational points on curves and surfaces over finite fields, we consider the setting of n × n matrix points with finite field entries. We obtain exact formulas for matrix point counts on elliptic curves and certain K3 surfaces for “supersingular” primes. These exact formulas, which involve partitions of integers up to n, essentially coincide with the expected value for the number of such points. Therefore, in analogy with the Sato–Tate conjecture, it is natural to study the distribution of the deviation from the expected values for all primes. We determine the limiting distributions for elliptic curves and a family of K3 surfaces. For non-CM elliptic curves with square-free conductor, our results are explicit.

Abstract:Vertical Sato-Tate states that the Frobenius trace of a randomly chosen elliptic curve over $\mathbb F_p$ tends to a semicircular distribution as $p\rightarrow \infty$. We go beyond this statement by considering the number of elliptic curves $N_{t,p}'$ with a given trace $t$ over $\mathbb F_p$ and characterizing the 2-dimensional distribution of $(t,N_{t,p}')$. In particular, this gives the distribution of the size of isogeny classes of elliptic curves over $\mathbb F_p$. Furthermore, we show a notion of stronger convergence for vertical Sato-Tate which states that the number of elliptic curves with Frobenius trace in an interval of length $p^\epsilon$ converges to the expected amount. The key step in the proof is to truncate Gekeler's infinite product formula, which relies crucially on an effective Chebotarev's density theorem that was recently developed by Pierce, Turnage-Butterbaugh and Wood.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.

Behaviors of the Tate--Shafarevich group of elliptic curves under quadratic field extensions

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\Bbb{Q}$. We study the behavior of the Tate--Shafarevich group of $E$ under quadratic extensions $\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})/\Bbb{Q}$. First, we determine the cokernel of the restriction map $H^1(\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\Bbb{Q}}/\Bbb{Q}),E)[2] \to \bigoplus_{p}H^1(\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\Bbb{Q}_p}/\Bbb{Q}_p),E)[2]$. Using this result, without assuming the finiteness of the Tate--Shafarevich group, we prove that the ratio $\frac{\#\Sha(E/\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}))[2] \cdot \#2\Sha(E/\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}))[4]}{\#\Sha(E_D/\Bbb{Q})[2]}$ can grow arbitrarily large, where $E_D$ denotes the quadratic twist of $E$ by $D$. For elliptic curves of the form $E : y^2 = x^3 + px$ with $p$ an odd prime, assuming the finiteness of the relevant Tate--Shafarevich groups, we prove two results: first, that $\Sha(E_D/\Bbb{Q})[2] = 0$ for infinitely many square-free integers $D$, and second, that $\#\Sha(E/\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}))[2] \leq 4$ for infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields $\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$.

Nondegeneracy and Sato-Tate Distributions of Two Families of Jacobian Varieties

Abstract:We consider the curves $ y^2=x^{2^m} -c$ and $y^2=x^{2^{d}+1}-cx$ over the rationals where $c \in \mathbb{Q}^{\times}.$ These curves are related via their associated Jacobian varieties in that the Jacobians of the latter appear as factors of the Jacobians of the former. One of the principle aims of this paper is to fully describe their Sato-Tate groups and distributions by determining generators of the component groups. In order to do this, we first prove the nondegeneracy of the two families of Jacobian varieties via their Hodge groups. We then use results relating Sato-Tate groups and twisted Lefschetz groups of nondegenerate abelian varieties to determine the generators of the associated Sato-Tate groups. The results of this paper add new examples to the literature of families of nondegenerate Jacobian varieties and of noncyclic Sato-Tate groups. Furthermore, we compute moment statistics associated to the Sato-Tate groups which can be used to verify the equidistribution statement of the generalized Sato-Tate conjecture by comparing them to moment statistics obtained for the traces in the normalized $L$-polynomials of the curves.

Abstract:In this paper we refine recent work due to A. Shankar, A. N. Shankar, and X. Wang on counting elliptic curves by conductor to the case of elliptic curves with a rational 2-torsion point. This family is a small family, as opposed to the large families considered by the aforementioned authors. We prove the analogous counting theorem for elliptic curves with so-called square-free index as well as for curves with suitably bounded Szpiro ratios. We note that our assumptions on the size of the Szpiro ratios is less stringent than would be expected by the naive generalization of their approach.

Abstract:Given a family of products of elliptic curves over a rational curve over a number field $K$, we give a bound for the number of special fibers of height at most $B$ such that the two factors are isogenous. We prove an upper bound that depends on $K$, the family, and the height $B$. Moreover, if we slightly change the definition of the height of the parametrizing family, we prove a uniform bound that depends only on the degree of the family, $K$, and the height $B$.

Abstract:In 2016, Balakrishnan-Ho-Kaplan-Spicer-Stein-Weigandt produced a database of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by height in which they computed the rank, the size of the $2$-Selmer group, and other arithmetic invariants. They observed that after a certain point, the average rank seemed to decrease as the height increased. Here we consider the family of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose rational torsion subgroup is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/8\mathbb{Z}$. Conditional on GRH and BSD, we compute the rank of $92\%$ of the $202461$ curves with parameter height less than $10^3$. We also compute the size of the $2$-Selmer group and the Tamagawa product, and prove that their averages tend to infinity for this family.

Abstract:Let denote the space of cusp forms of even integer weight k and level N . We prove an asymptotic for the Petersson trace formula for under an appropriate condition. Using the non-vanishing of a Kloosterman sum involved in the asymptotic, we give a lower bound for discrepancy in the Sato–Tate distribution for levels not divisible by 8. This generalizes a result of Jung and Sardari (Math Ann 378(1–2):513–557, 2020, Theorem 1.6) for squarefree levels. An analogue of the Sato-Tate distribution was obtained by Omar and Mazhouda (Ramanujan J 20(1):81–89, 2009, Theorem 3) for the distribution of eigenvalues where f is a Hecke eigenform and p is a prime number. As an application of the above-mentioned asymptotic, we obtain a sequence of weights such that discrepancy in the analogue distribution obtained in Omar and Mazhouda (Ramanujan J 20(1):81–89, 2009) has a lower bound.

Abstract:We prove non-trivial upper bounds for general bilinear forms with trace functions of bountiful sheaves, where the supports of two variables can be arbitrary subsets in F p of suitable sizes. This essentially recovers the Pólya-Vinogradov range, and also applies to symmetric powers of Kloosterman sums and Frobenius traces of elliptic curves. In the case of hyper-Kloosterman sums, we can beat the Pólya-Vinogradov barrier by combining additive combinatorics with a deep result of Kowalski, Michel and Sawin (2017) on sum-products of Kloosterman sheaves. Two Sato-Tate distributions of Kloosterman sums and Frobenius traces of elliptic curves in sparse families are also concluded.

In this paper we study the limiting distributions of the normalized $L$-polynomials of the curves by computing their Sato-Tate groups and distributions. We also provide results for the number of points on the curves over finite fields, including a formula in terms of Jacobi sums when the field $\mathbb F_q$ satisfies $q\equiv 1 \pmod{\ell^2}$.

One-level density of families of elliptic curves and the Ratios Conjectures

Abstract:Using the ratios conjectures as introduced by Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer, we obtain closed formulas for the one-level density for two families of L-functions attached to elliptic curves. From those closed formulas, we can determine the underlying symmetry types of the families. The one-level scaling density for the first family corresponds to the orthogonal distribution as predicted by the conjectures of Katz and Sarnak, and the one-level scaling density for the second family is the sum of the Dirac distribution and the even orthogonal distribution. This seems to be a new phenomenon, caused by the fact that the curves of the second families have odd rank. Then, there is a trivial zero at the central point which accounts for the Dirac distribution, and also affects the remaining part of the scaling density which is then (maybe surprisingly) the even orthogonal distribution. The one-level density for this second family was studied in the past for test functions with Fourier transforms of small support, but since the Fourier transforms of the even orthogonal and odd orthogonal distributions are undistinguishable for small support, it was not possible to identify the distribution with those techniques. This can be done with the ratios conjectures, and it sheds more light on "independent" and "non-independent" zeroes and the repulsion phenomenon.

Abstract:For $j=1,2$, let $f_j(z) = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} a_{j}(n) e^{2\pi i nz}$ be a holomorphic, non-CM cuspidal newform of even weight $k_j \ge 2$ with trivial nebentypus. For each prime $p$, let $\theta_{j}(p)\in[0,\pi]$ be the angle such that $a_j(p) = 2p^{(k-1)/2} \cos \theta_{j}(p)$. The now-proven Sato--Tate conjecture states that the angles $(\theta_j(p))$ equidistribute with respect to the measure $d\mu_{\mathrm ST} = \frac{2}{\pi}\sin^2\theta\,d\theta$. We show that, if $f_1$ is not a character twist of $f_2$, then for subintervals $I_1,I_2 \subset [0,\pi]$, there exist infinitely many bounded gaps between the primes $p$ such that $\theta_1(p) \in I_1$ and $\theta_2(p) \in I_2$. We also prove a common generalization of the bounded gaps with the Green--Tao theorem.

Abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ with large Tate-Shafarevich groups

Abstract:We produce an explicit sequence $\left(S_a \right)_{a \geq 1}$ of abelian surfaces over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ whose Tate-Shafarevich groups are finite and large. More precisely, we establish the estimate $\left \arrowvert\mathrm{III}(S_a) \right \arrowvert = H(S_a)^{1 + o(1)}$ as $a \rightarrow \infty$, where $H(S_a)$ denotes the exponential height of $S_a$. Our method is to prove that each $S_a$ satisfies the BSD conjecture, analyse the geometry and arithmetic of its Néron model and give an explicit expression for its $L$-function in terms of Gauss and Kloosterman sums. By studying the relative distribution of the angles associated to these character sums, we estimate the size of the central value of $L(S_a, T)$, hence the order of $\mathrm{III}(S_a)$.

Abstract:Mazur and Tate proposed a conjecture which compares the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with the order of vanishing of Mazur-Tate elements, which are analogues of Stickelberger elements. Under some relatively mild assumptions, we prove this conjecture. Our strategy of the proof is to study divisibility of certain derivatives of Kato's Euler system.
