Abstract:In the present article, we formulate a conjectural uniform error term in the Chebotarev–Sato–Tate distribution for abelian surfaces -isogenous to a product of not -isogenous non-CM-elliptic curves, established by the author in Amri (Eur J Math, 2023. https://doi.org/10.1007/s40879-023-00682-5, Theorem 1.1). As a consequence, we provide a conditional direct proof to the generalized Lang–Trotter conjecture recently formulated and studied in Chen et al. (Ramanujan J, 2022).

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:We generalize a theorem of Bismut–Zhang, which extends the Cheeger–Müller theorem on Ray–Singer torsion and Reidemeister torsion, to the case of infinite Galois covering spaces. Our result is stated in the framework of extended cohomology, and generalizes in this case a recent result of Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai. It does not use the determinant class condition and thus also (potentially) generalizes several results on L2-torsions due to Burghelea, Friedlander, Kappeler and McDonald. We combine the framework developed by Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai on the determinant of extended cohomology with the heat kernel method developed in the original paper of Bismut–Zhang to prove our result.
Abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ with large Tate-Shafarevich groups

Abstract:We produce an explicit sequence $\left(S_a \right)_{a \geq 1}$ of abelian surfaces over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ whose Tate-Shafarevich groups are finite and large. More precisely, we establish the estimate $\left \arrowvert\mathrm{III}(S_a) \right \arrowvert = H(S_a)^{1 + o(1)}$ as $a \rightarrow \infty$, where $H(S_a)$ denotes the exponential height of $S_a$. Our method is to prove that each $S_a$ satisfies the BSD conjecture, analyse the geometry and arithmetic of its Néron model and give an explicit expression for its $L$-function in terms of Gauss and Kloosterman sums. By studying the relative distribution of the angles associated to these character sums, we estimate the size of the central value of $L(S_a, T)$, hence the order of $\mathrm{III}(S_a)$.

Abstract:Faltings proved that there are finitely many abelian varieties of genus $g$ over a number field $K$, with good reduction outside a finite set of primes $S$. Fixing one of these abelian varieties $A$, we prove that there are finitely many smooth hypersurfaces in $A$, with good reduction outside $S$, representing a given ample class in the Néron-Severi group of $A$, up to translation, as long as the dimension of $A$ is at least $4$. Our approach builds on the approach of arXiv:1807.02721 which studies $p$-adic variations of Hodge structure to turn finiteness results for $p$-adic Galois representations into geometric finiteness statements. A key new ingredient is an approach to proving big monodromy for the variations of Hodge structure arising from the middle cohomology of these hypersurfaces using the Tannakian theory of sheaf convolution on abelian varieties.

Abstract:We generalize a theorem of Bismut-Zhang, which extends the Cheeger-Mueller theorem on Ray-Singer torsion and Reidemeister torsion, to the case where the flat vector bundle over a closed manifold carries a nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form. As a consequence, we prove the Burghelea-Haller conjecture which gives an analytic interpretation of the Turaev torsion. It thus also provides an analytic interpretation of (not merely the absolute value of) the Alexander polynomial in knot theory.

Abstract:We prove the Ramanujan and Sato-Tate conjectures for Bianchi modular forms of weight at least 2. More generally, we prove these conjectures for all regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{A}_F)$ of parallel weight, where $F$ is any CM field. We deduce these theorems from a new potential automorphy theorem for the symmetric powers of 2-dimensional compatible systems of Galois representations of parallel weight.

On the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for modular abelian surfaces

Abstract:Let $A$ be a modular abelian surface over $Q$ which either has trivial geometric endomorphism ring, or arises as the restriction of scalars of an elliptic curve over an imaginary quadratic field which is modular and is not a $Q$-curve. In the former case, assume that there exists an odd Dirichlet character $\chi$ such that $L(A,\chi,1)\neq 0$. We prove the following implication: if $L(A, 1) \ne 0$, and the $p$-adic eigenvariety for $GSp_4$ is smooth at the point corresponding to $A$ (and some auxiliary technical hypotheses hold), then $A(Q)$ is finite, as predicted by the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, and the $p$-part of the Tate--Shafarevich group is also finite. We also prove one inclusion of the cyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $A$. Moreover, we also prove analogous results for cohomological automorphic representations of $GSp_4$, removing many of the restrictive hypotheses in our earlier work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.05960" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.05960">2003.05960</a>]; for cohomological representations we do not need to assume smoothness of the eigenvariety, since it is automatic in this case. The main ingredient in the proof is the Euler system attached to the spin representations of genus $2$ Siegel modular forms constructed in our earlier work with Skinner.

On Effective Sato-Tate Distributions for Surfaces Arising from Products of Elliptic Curves

Abstract:We prove, with an unconditional effective error bound, the Sato-Tate distributions for two families of surfaces arising from products of elliptic curves, namely a one-parameter family of K3 surfaces and double quadric surfaces. To prove these effective Sato-Tate distributions, we prove an effective form of the joint Sato-Tate distribution for two twist-inequivalent elliptic curves, along with an effective form of the Sato-Tate distribution for an elliptic curve for primes in arithmetic progressions. The former completes the previous work of Thorner by including the cases in which one of the elliptic curves has CM.

An analogue of a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa for abelian varieties over function fields

Abstract:Let $L$ be a number field and let $\ell$ be a prime number. Rasmussen and Tamagawa conjectured, in a precise sense, that abelian varieties whose field of definition of the $\ell$-power torsion is both a pro-$\ell$ extension of $L(\mu_\ell)$ and unramified away from $\ell$ are quite rare. In this paper, we formulate an analogue of the Rasmussen--Tamagawa conjecture for non-isotrivial abelian varieties defined over function fields. We provide a proof of our analogue in the case of elliptic curves. In higher dimensions, when the base field is a subfield of the complex numbers, we show that our conjecture is a consequence of the uniform geometric torsion conjecture. Finally, using a theorem of Bakker and Tsimerman we also prove our conjecture unconditionally for abelian varieties with real multiplication.

A Chebotarev Density Theorem over Local Fields

Abstract:We compute the $p$-adic densities of points with a given splitting type along a (generically) finite map, analogous to the classical Chebotarev theorem over number fields and function fields. Under some mild hypotheses, we prove that these densities satisfy a functional equation in the size of the residue field. This functional equation is a direct reflection of Poincaré duality in étale cohomology. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Bhargava, Cremona, Fisher, and Gajović on factorization densities of p-adic polynomials. The key tool is the notion of admissible pairs associated to a group, which we use as an invariant of the inertia and decomposition action of a local field on the fibers of the finite map. We compute the splitting densities by Möbius inverting certain p-adic integrals along the poset of admissible pairs. The conjecture on factorization densities follows immediately for tamely ramified primes from our general results. We reduce the complete conjecture (including the wild primes) to the existence of an explicit "Tate-type" resolution of the "resultant locus" over the integers and complete the proof of the conjecture by constructing this resolution.

On abelian varieties whose torsion is not self-dual

Abstract:We construct infinitely many abelian surfaces $A$ defined over the rational numbers such that, for a prime $\ell \leqslant 7$, the $\ell$-torsion subgroup of $A$ is not isomorphic as a Galois module to the $\ell$-torsion subgroup of its dual $A^\vee$. We do this by explicitly analyzing the action of the Galois group on the $\ell$-adic Tate module and its reduction modulo $\ell$. We offer a framework for these computations and illustrate its use in simpler examples before using it in the proof of our main result.

Abstract:We improve the uniformity in the asymptotic Chebotarev density theorem for Galois extensions of number fields satisfying Artin's holomorphy conjecture. Using nonabelian base change, this yields an unconditional improvement to the uniformity in the Chebotarev density theorem along with the first theoretical improvement over Weiss's bound for the least norm of an unramified prime ideal in the Chebotarev density theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an intersection-theoretic result pertaining to curves in certain Hilbert modular surfaces in positive characteristic. Specifically, we show that given two appropriate curves C,D parameterizing abelian surfaces with real multiplication, the set of points (x,y) in the product CxD with surfaces parameterized by x and y isogenous to each other is Zariski dense in C x D, thereby proving a case of a just-likely intersection conjecture. We also compute the change in Faltings height under appropriate p-power isogenies of abelian surfaces with real multiplication over characteristic p global fields.

Abstract: In this paper we study various aspects of the Ekedahl-Serre problem. We formulate questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and Coleman-Oort type for general weakly special subvarieties in the Siegel moduli space, propose a conjecture relating these two questions, and provide examples supporting these questions. The main new result is an upper bound of genera for curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isogeneous to products of elliptic curves satisfying the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and we also refine previous results showing that certain weakly special subvarieties only meet the open Torelli locus in at most finitely many points.
