Abstract:Mercury emissions from industrial stacks pose a hazardous threat to human being. Conventional methods of atomic absorption and plasma emission spectroscopy have their limitations. In order to develop a sensitive real-time measurement approach for industrial applications, an ultraviolet interferometer system capable of Fourier transform spectrochemical measurements has been preliminary studied in our laboratory. Though interferometry approach is mostly used in infrared, the interferometer we developed has showed its great potential for application in atomic emission detection in ultraviolet. We have set up the interferometer in Michelson configuration. Light source of our choice is low pressure mercury pen lamp which provides strong atomic mercury emissions at 253.7nm. Fringe patterns at 253.7nm and 546.1nm were pictured by a charge-coupled-device (CCD) camera. Moving fringes was generated by linear displacement of the movable mirror of the Michelson interferometer. The interferograms at both ultraviolet and visible regions of atomic mercury emission spectrum were recorded. Based on the translation function of movable mirror, wavelength information is retrieved from the interferogram. The error of experimental resolved wavelength is within 2%.

Abstract:In recent years, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy has been widely used for chemical oxygen demand (COD) measurements of water. However, chemical compositions of substance in different water samples can cause measurement deviations, so a local calibration is needed. In this study, a novel local calibration method is proposed. The absorption spectra of COD standard solutions and wastewater samples taken from four factories were collected. We analyzed the impact of chemical compositions of substance in different water samples and extracted the morphology features of their absorptive spectra for recognition models. Furthermore, we calculated the local calibration parameters of the four categories of real water samples by specific modification based on the ability of light absorption in various water environments. After the process of local calibration, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the predictions were very small, which highlights the potential of this method for improving the accuracy and adaptability of COD measurements based on ultraviolet–visible spectrum.

Abstract:A novel spectroscopic sensor based on an optofluidic liquid jet waveguide is presented. In this device, a liquid jet waveguide is generated with the solution under analysis. This stream, exploiting total internal reflection, acts as an optical waveguide confining the autofluorescence light produced by chemical or biological samples when opportunely excited. Using a self-aligned configuration, the liquid jet is directly coupled with a multimode optical fiber collecting the fluorescence towards the detection system. Experimental measurements have been performed using an UV excitation source on water solutions containing representative water pollutants as aromatic hydrocarbons or bacteria showing very low limit of detection.

Abstract:UV continua observed in multi-bubble and single-bubble sonoluminescence spectra of hydrogen-containing liquids have the same physical nature - radiative dissociation of electronically excited hydrogen molecules (and possibly hydrides of heavy rare gases like ArH). In the case of SBSL of "air bubble in water" the oscillating bubble actually consists of a hydrogen/argon mixture with periodically changing amount of water vapor. The proposed mechanism is able to explain all available spectroscopic observations without any exotic hypothesis but in terms usual for plasma spectroscopy.

Abstract:The dynamic behaviour of SonoVue microbubbles, a new generation ultrasound contrast agent, is investigated in real time with light scattering method. Highly diluted SonoVue microbubbles are injected into a diluted gel made of xanthan gum and water. The responses of individual SonoVue bubbles to driven ultrasound pulses are measured. Both linear and nonlinear bubble oscillations are observed and the results suggest that SonoVue microbubbles can generate strong nonlinear responses. By fitting the experimental data of individual bubble responses with Sarkar's model, the shell coating parameter of the bubbles and dilatational viscosity is estimated to be 7.0 nm.s.Pa.

Abstract:A simple, compact, and inexpensive tunable volume holographic imaging spectrometer is presented to acquire narrowband multispectral fluorescence measurements. It is constructed with three simple achromatic lenses, a transmission volume hologram, and a detector array. Experiments are carried out to evaluate the performance of this spectrometer. The experimental results indicate that the tunable spectrometer can operate at a wavelength range from 400 to 700 nm. Additionally, this spectrometer can provide a lateral field-of-view greater than 33 mm and a spatial resolution of 1.0 mm under narrow band illumination (full-width-half-maximum bandwidth 20 nm). Multispectral fluorescence molecular tomography experiments are conducted with this spectrometer to test the applicability of narrowband multispectral macroscopy. Abstract:Based on the spectrum measurement,we have investigated the single bubble sonoluminescence(SBSL)driven by a biharmonic ultrasound.The spectral temperature is sensitive to the relative phase of the second harmonic with respect to the fundamental.At the optimal phase,about 160°,the SBSL reaches its most efficient state in which the temperature is lifted by over 10000 K.Our experimental results have also been reproduced by numerical calculation in the theoretical framework of Rayleigh bubble dynamics.

Abstract:Results of transmission experiments of vacuum ultraviolet light through a 11.6 cm long cell filled with pure and xenon-doped liquid argon are described. Pure liquid argon shows no attenuation down to the experimental short-wavelength cut-off at 118nm. Based on a conservative approach, a lower limit of 1.10 m for the attenuation length of its own scintillation light could be derived. Adding xenon to liquid argon at concentrations on the order of parts per million leads to strong xenon-related absorption features which are used for a tentative assignment of the recently found near-infrared emission observed in electron-beam excited liquid argon-xenon mixtures. Two of the three absorption features can be explained by perturbed xenon transitions and the third one by a trapped exciton (Wannier-Mott) impurity state. A calibration curve connecting the equivalent width of the absorption line at 140 nm with xenon concentration is provided.

Abstract:Bubble dynamics and luminol emissions of cavitation in sub-millimeter-sized PFA flow tubes, submerged in an ultrasonic bath reactor, are studied at 27 kHz driving frequency. Nucleation of cavitation inside the tubes only takes place via a free interface, realized here in form of an alternating water-air slug flow. High-speed recordings show that cavitation bubbles in the water slugs often develop localized structures in form of clusters or bubble plugs, and that such structures can be seeded via a single pinch-off from the free interface. Within the structures, bubbles strongly interact and frequently undergo merging or splitting events. Due to the mutual interaction and resulting motion, bubbles often collapse with a fast displacement, suggesting jetting dynamics. Bubble compression ratios are estimated on basis of observed individual bubble dynamics and numerical fitting by a single bubble model. The resulting peak temperatures around 3000 K allow for dissociation of water vapor. This is in accordance with observed sonochemiluminescence from luminol, originating from active bubble zones in the tubes.

Abstract:This paper describes a tri-colour light emitting diode (LED)-photoresistor (PR)-based in situ spectrometer with geometry that differs from the previously presented and allows for small volumes of test solution (350mul) and effective homogenisation of reagents. The emission maximums of the tri-colour LED (TC-LED) are at 470, 565 and 660nm. The basic measuring characteristics of the prototype were evaluated. The prototype was tested for determination of calcium in natural waters with the o-cresolphtalein complexon and was proved to be useful for real life applications. The in situ spectrometer with microreaction chamber enables the rapid optimisation of experimental conditions, as was demonstrated on the example of oxidation of alcohols with potassium dichromate. The drop-based experimental approach to the ruggedness test is fast, economic and gives reliable results with the minimum waste production. The prototype, connected to the computer, functions as a kinetic microreactor suitable also for following rapid changes. In spite of the manual addition of the initialising reagent, the data are lost only during the first 3s.

Abstract:Optical methods such as ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) and fluorescence spectroscopy are well-established analytical techniques for in situ water quality monitoring. A broad range of bio-logical and chemical contaminants in different concentration ranges can be detected using these methods. The availability of results in real time allows a quick response to water quality changes. The measuring devices are configured as portable multi-parameter probes. However, their specification and data processing typically cannot be changed by users, or only with difficulties. Therefore, we developed a submersible sensor probe, which combines UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy together with a flexible data processing platform. Due to its modular design in the hardware and software, the sensing system can be modified to the specific application. The dimension of the waterproof enclosure with a diameter of 100 mm permits also its application in groundwater monitoring wells. As a light source for fluorescence spectroscopy, we constructed an LED array that can be equipped with four different LEDs. A miniaturized deuterium-tungsten light source (200-1100 nm) was used for UV/Vis spectroscopy. A miniaturized spectrometer with a spectral range between 225 and 1000 nm permits the detection of complete spectra for both methods.

Abstract:The portable Raman spectrometer boasts portability, rapid analysis, and high flexibility. It stands as a crucial and powerful technical tool for analyzing the chemical composition of samples, whether biological or non-biological, across diverse fields. To improve the resolution of grating spectrometers and ensure a wide spectral range, many spectrometer systems have been designed with double-grating structures. However, the impact of external forces, such as installation deviations and inevitable collisions, may cause differences between the actual state of the internal spectrometer components and their theoretical values. Therefore, spectrometers must be calibrated to establish the relationship between the wavelength and the pixel positions. The characteristic peaks of commonly used calibration substances are primarily distributed in the 200–2000 cm−1 range. The distribution of characteristic peaks in other wavenumber ranges is sparse, especially for spectrometers with double-channel spectral structures and wide spectral ranges. This uneven distribution of spectral peaks generates significant errors in the polynomial fitting results used to calibrate spectrometers. Therefore, to satisfy the calibration requirements of a dual-channel portable Raman spectrometer with a wide spectral range, this study designed a calibration method based on an optical frequency comb, which generates dense and uniform comb-like spectral signals at equal intervals. The method was verified experimentally and compared to the traditional calibration method of using a mercury–argon lamp. The results showed that the error bandwidth of the calibration results of the proposed method was significantly smaller than that of the mercury–argon lamp method, thus demonstrating a substantial improvement in the calibration accuracy.

Abstract:UV-vis spectroscopy is widely used for kinetic studies in physical chemistry, as species' absolute cross-sections are usually less sensitive to experimental conditions (i.e., temperature and pressure). Here, we present the design and characterization of a multipass UV-vis absorption spectroscopy white cell coupled to a pulsed-laser photolysis flow reactor. The glass reactor was designed to facilitate studies of gas phase chemical reactions over a range of conditions (239-293 K and 10-550 Torr). Purged windows mitigate contamination from chemical precursors and photolysis products. We report the measured impact of this purging on temperature uniformity and the absorption length and present some supporting flow calculations. The combined optical setup is unique and enables the photolysis laser to be coaligned with a well-defined absorption pathlength probe beam. This alignment leverages the use of one long-pass filter to increase the spectrum flatness and increase the light intensity vs other systems that use two dichroic mirrors. The probe beam is analyzed with a dual exit spectrograph, customized to split the light between an intensified CCD and photomultiplier tube, enabling simultaneous spectrum and single wavelength detection. This multipass system yields a pathlength of ∼450 cm and minimum observable concentrations of ∼3.7 × 1011 molecule cm-3 (assuming cross-sections ∼1.2 × 10-17 cm2). The temperature profile across the reaction region is ±2 K, defined by the worst-case temperature of 239 K, validated by measurements of the N2O4 equilibrium constant. Finally, the system is implemented to study the simplest Criegee intermediate, demonstrating the instrument performance and advantages of simultaneous spectrum and temporal profile measurements.
Collision broadening of line spectrum in sonoluminescence

Abstract:The direct measurement of temperature inside a sonoluminescing bubble as it is at its flashing phase is almost impossible due to the smallness of the bubble and the short duration of the flashing. One may estimate the temperature through fitting the continuum spectrum of sonoluminescence by the black body radiation formula, or fitting the shape of atomic or molecular line spectrum (the different temperature, density and pressure result in the different shape of the line spectrum due to the effect of collision broadening). However, the temperature changes in a huge range at short duration as the bubble flashes, therefore, the observed spectra are some kind of average one, so are those fitted results. To evaluate the instantaneous temperature more accurately, we simulate the processes of the bubble motion and the thermodynamics inside the bubble, in which atomic or molecular line spectra with the collision broadening effect and the continuum spectra contributed from the processes of electron-atom bremsstrahlung, electron-ion bremsstrahlung and recombination radiation and radiative attachment of electrons to atoms and molecules are taken into account in calculating the light emission. If both the calculated continuum spectra and the shape of line spectra can well represent the experimental data, we may deduce that the calculation of the temperature, density and pressure is reliable and we indirectly evaluate those quantities inside the bubble. in the present calculation, the line spectra of OH radical at about 310nm mixing the electron transition with the vibration and rotational bands are considered. The calculation qualitatively consists with the observation, and we expect that with the more precise bubble dynamics model instead of the uniform model employed in the present calculation we may improve the quantitative result.

Abstract:The investigation of reaction mechanisms is a complex task that usually requires the use of several techniques. To obtain as much information as possible on the reaction and any intermediates ‐ possibly invisible to one technique ‐ the combination of techniques is a solution. In this work we present a new setup for combined UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopy and compare it to an established alternative. The presented approach allows a versatile usage of different commercially‐available components like mirrors and fiber bundles as well as different fixed pathlengths according to double transmission or single transmission measurements. While a previous approach is based on a dip‐probe setup for conventional NMR probes, the new one is based on a micro‐Helmholtz coil array (LiquidVoxelTM). This makes the use of rectangular cuvettes possible, which ensure well‐defined pathlengths allowing for quantification of species. Additionally, very low quantities of compound can be analyzed due to the microfabrication and small cuvette size used. As proof‐of‐principle this new setup for combined UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopy is used to examine a well‐studied photochromic system of the dithienylethene compound class. A thorough comparison of the pros and cons of the two setups for combined UV/Vis and NMR measurements is performed.

Developing a Miniaturized Spectrophotometer Using 235 and 275 Nm UVC-LEDs for Fast Detection of Nitrate in Natural Water and Wastewater Effluents

Abstract:In this study, miniaturized portable/online UVCLED spectrophotometers have been developed for fast detection of nitrate nitrogen and dissolved organic matter, using 235 and 275 nm light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the light sources and GaNbased photodiodes as UV detectors. The application of the wideband gap GaN-based photodiodes eliminated the influences of parasitic visible emission of UVC-LEDs. Using Orange G as the test absorbing compound, the portable UVC-LED spectrophotometer showed high linear upper detection limits and a negligible stray light. The portable spectrophotometer showed good linearity for NO3--N concentration in the range of 0-15 mg/L (R-2 > 0.99), while a loss of sensitivity was observed at higher NO3--N concentration. This nonlinearity was attributed to the intrinsic stray light arising from the incomplete overlap between the 235 nm LED emission spectra and the nitrate absorption spectra. With the empirical correction coefficient alpha being determined from natural water and municipal wastewater samples, the UVC-LED spectrophotometers have comparable accuracy to the standard spectrophotometric method. The results of size exclusion chromatography further elucidated that it was the fraction of humic substances that determined the correction coefficient alpha for the UV spectrophotometric detection of nitrate in natural water and municipal wastewater samples.

Abstract:An advanced wavelength calibration process with higher wavelength accuracy is developed based on the conventional calibration method of micro-spectrometers with multichannel detectors. The deficiencies of the conventional method in acquiring sufficient well-spaced and adequately accurate wavelength-pixel data for calibration are analyzed. And three steps are added to the conventional method before the final pixel-wavelength fit is carried out. First, segmented data collection is carried out to ensure sufficient well-spaced lines for calibration. Second, sub-pixel analysis is executed to increase sampling rate. Third, peak fit is implemented to acquire more accurate central wavelength positions. The simulated experiment was based on a compact spectrometer with a crossed Czerny-Turner optical design. Mercury and Argon line spectra are used as wavelength standards. A linear image sensor with 1024 pixels each 25 mu m in width is used as the detector. In the new calibration process the whole spectral region was divided into two segments with different integral time of the detector; the sampling rate was increased by 2 times by sub-pixel analysis; and log-normal function is applied in the peak fit. The results show that by applying the new method, the wavelength accuracy improves from above 1.0nm to around 0.6nm.
Computational Simulation of Sodium Doublet Line Intensities in Multibubble Sonoluminescence

Abstract:We perform a computational simulation of the fluid dynamics of sodium doublet（Na-D）line emissions from one sonoluminescing bubble among the cavitation bubbles in argon-saturated Na hydroxide（NaOH）aqueous solutions.Our simulation includes the distributions of acoustic pressures and the dynamics of cavitation bubbles by numerically solving the cavitation dynamic equation and bubble-pulsation equation.The simulation results demonstrate that when the maximum temperature inside a luminescing bubble is relatively low,two emission peaks from excited Na are prominent within the emission spectra,at wavelengths of 589.0 and 589.6 nm.As the maximum temperature of the bubble increases,the two peaks merge into one peak and the full width at half maximum of this peak increases.These calculations match with the observations of Na-D line emissions from MBSL occurring in aqueous solutions of NaOH under an argon gas.

Abstract:The light power of a xenon excimer VUV source was determined by means of oxygen actinometiy. It was found that the method is not applicable for direct measurement of the light power mainly because of the side-reactions of ozone with oxygen atoms. Model calculations led to a simple equation between the quantum yield and the concentrations of ozone and oxygen. The correlation between the overall quantum yield and the ozone and oxygen concentration at room temperature is Φ = 2 - 1.l0[O3]/(O2]1.94, and at atmospheric oxygen pressure Φ = 2 - 520 [O3].
