Abstract:Open string disk integrals are represented as contour integrals of a product of Beta functions using Mellin transformations. This makes the mathematical problem of computing the α′-expansion around the field-theory limit similar to that of the ϵ-expansion in Feynman loop integrals around the four-dimensional limit. More explicitly, the formula in Mellin space obtained directly from the standard Koba–Nielsen-like representation is valid in a region of values of α′ that does not include α′=0. Analytic continuation is therefore needed since contours are pinched by poles as α′→0. Deforming contours that get pinched by poles generates a set of (n−3)! multi-dimensional residues left behind which contain all the field theory information. Some analogies between the field theory formulas obtained by this method and those derived recently from using the scattering equations are commented at the end.

Abstract:In this article, we study the intersection of a finite collection of disks in Euclidean space by examining spheres of various dimensions and their poles (extreme values with respect to canonical projections) contained within the intersection's boundary. We derive explicit formulae for computing these extreme values and present two applications. The first application involves computing the smallest common rescaling factor for the radii of the disk system, which brings the system to a single point of intersection. This calculation allows us to compute the generalized Čech filtration, a crucial tool for the topological data analysis of weighted point clouds. The second application focuses on determining the minimal Axis-Aligned Bounding Box (AABB) for the intersection of a finite collection of disks in Euclidean space, addressing a significant problem in computational geometry. We consider that this work aims to contribute to the fields of topological data analysis and computational geometry by providing new tools for analyzing complex geometric structures.

Abstract:We offer a new approach to the classical topological disk theorem of Reifenberg in the codimension-1 case. Our proof, using 1/2-level sets of the smoothing of the characteristic function of the domain Omega as approximating surfaces of partial derivative Omega, is much simpler than Reifenberg's original one (1960). We also extend the result to parabolic space.

Abstract:The existence of kinematic formulas for area measures with respect to any connected, closed subgroup of the orthogonal group acting transitively on the unit sphere is established. In particular, the kinematic operator for area measures is shown to have the structure of a co-product. In the case of the unitary group the algebra associated to this co-product is described explicitly in terms of generators and relations. As a consequence, a simple algorithm that yields explicit kinematic formulas for unitary area measures is obtained.

Abstract:A highly accurate and efficient method to compute the expected values of the count, sum, and squared norm of the sum of the centre vectors of a random maximal sized collection of non-overlapping unit diameter disks touching a fixed unit-diameter disk is presented. This extends earlier work on Rényi's parking problem [Magyar Tud. Akad. Mat. Kutató Int. Közl. 3 (1-2), 1958, pp. 109-127]. Underlying the method is a splitting of the the problem conditional on the value of the first disk. This splitting is proven and then used to derive integral equations for the expectations. These equations take a lower block triangular form. They are solved using substitution and approximation of the integrals to very high accuracy using a polynomial approximation within the blocks.

Abstract:In this paper we will examine unions of oriented and non-oriented unit squares in same plane and measure the ratio of perimeter to area of these unions. In 1998, T. Keleti published the conjecture that this ratio never exceeds 4. We outline the current state of research on this conjecture and give two proofs of a special case. Finally, we explore the difficulties that arise from using similar methods in the general case and examine properties of any potential counterexample.

Abstract:In recent years, sum-product estimates in Euclidean space and finite fields have been studied using a variety of combinatorial, number theoretic and analytic methods. Erdos type problems involving the distribution of distances, areas and volumes have also received much attention. In this paper we prove a relatively straightforward function version of an incidence results for points and planes previously established in \cite{HI07} and \cite{HIKR07}. As a consequence of our methods, we obtain sharp or near sharp results on the distribution of volumes determined by subsets of vector spaces over finite fields and the associated arithmetic expressions. In particular, our machinery enables us to prove that if $E \subset {\Bbb F}_q^d$, $d \ge 4$, the $d$-dimensional vector space over a finite field ${\Bbb F}_q$, of size much greater than $q^{\frac{d}{2}}$, and if $E$ is a product set, then the set of volumes of $d$-dimensional parallelepipeds determined by $E$ covers ${\Bbb F}_q$. This result is sharp as can be seen by taking $E$ to equal to $A \times A \times ... \times A$, where $A$ is a sub-field of ${\Bbb F}_q$ of size $\sqrt{q}$. In three dimensions we establish the same result if $|E| \gtrsim q^{15/8}$. We prove in three dimensions that the set of volumes covers a positive proportion of ${\Bbb F}_q$ if $|E| \ge Cq^{3/2}$. Finally we show that in three dimensions the set of volumes covers a positive proportion of ${\Bbb F}_q$ if $|E| \ge Cq^2$, without any further assumptions on $E$, which is again sharp as taking $E$ to be a 2-plane through the origin shows.

Abstract:We study certain points significant for the hyperbolic geometry of the unit disk. We give explicit formulas for the intersection points of the Euclidean lines and the stereographic projections of great circles of the Riemann sphere passing through these points. We prove several results related to collinearity of these intersection points, offer new ways to find the hyperbolic midpoint, and represent a formula for the chordal midpoint. The proofs utilize Gröbner bases from computer algebra for the solution of polynomial equations.

Lipschitz Functions on Unions and Quotients of Metric Spaces

Abstract:Given a finite collection $\{X_i\}_{i\in I}$ of metric spaces, each of which has finite Nagata dimension and Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$, we prove that their union has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$. The short proof we provide is based on the Pelczyński decomposition method. A corollary is a solution to a question of Kaufmann about the union of two planar curves with tangential intersection. A second focus of the paper is on a special case of this result that can be studied using geometric methods. That is, we prove that the Lipschitz free space of a union of finitely many quasiconformal trees is isomorphic to $L^1$. These geometric methods also reveal that any metric quotient of a quasiconformal tree has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$. Finally, we analyze Lipschitz light maps on unions and metric quotients of quasiconformal trees in order to prove that the Lipschitz dimension of any such union or quotient is equal to 1.

Abstract:For a manifold and an integer , the space of -immersions of in is defined to be the space of immersions of in such that the preimage of every point in contains fewer than points. We consider the space of -immersions when is a disjoint union of -dimensional discs, and prove that it is equivalent to the product of the -configuration space of points in and the power of the space of injective linear maps from to . This result is needed in order to apply Michael Weiss's manifold calculus to the study of -immersions. The analogous statement for spaces of embeddings is "well-known", but a detailed proof is hard to find in the literature, and the existing proofs seem to use the isotopy extension theorem, if only as a matter of convenience. Isotopy extension does not hold for -immersions, so we spell out the details of a proof that avoids using it, and applies to spaces of -immersions.

Abstract:Working over a base number field $\KK$, we study the attractive question of Zariski non-density for $(D,S)$-integral points in $\mathrm{O}_f(x)$ the forward $f$-orbit of a rational point $x \in X(\KK)$. Here, $f \colon X \rightarrow X$ is a regular surjective self-map for $X$ a geometrically irreducible projective variety over $\KK$. Given a non-zero and effective $f$-quasi-polarizable Cartier divisor $D$ on $X$ and defined over $\KK$, our main result gives a sufficient condition, that is formulated in terms of the $f$-dynamics of $D$, for non-Zariski density of certain dynamically defined subsets of $\mathrm{O}_f(x)$. For the case of $(D,S)$-integral points, this result gives a sufficient condition for non-Zariski density of integral points in $\mathrm{O}_f(x)$. Our approach expands on that of Yasufuku, \cite{Yasufuku:2015}, building on earlier work of Silverman \cite{Silverman:1993}. Our main result gives an unconditional form of the main results of loc.~cit.; the key arithmetic input to our main theorem is the Subspace Theorem of Schmidt in the generalized form that has been given by Ru and Vojta in \cite{Ru:Vojta:2016} and expanded upon in \cite{Grieve:points:bounded:degree} and \cite{Grieve:qualitative:subspace}.

Abstract:We present three new approximation algorithms with improved constant ratios for selecting $n$ points in $n$ disks such that the minimum pairwise distance among the points is maximized. (1) A very simple $O(n\log n)$-time algorithm with ratio $0.511$ for disjoint unit disks. (2) An LP-based algorithm with ratio $0.707$ for disjoint disks of arbitrary radii that uses a linear number of variables and constraints, and runs in polynomial time. (3) A hybrid algorithm with ratio either $0.4487$ or $0.4674$ for (not necessarily disjoint) unit disks that uses an algorithm of Cabello in combination with either the simple $O(n\log n)$-time algorithm or the LP-based algorithm. The LP algorithm can be extended for disjoint balls of arbitrary radii in $\RR^d$, for any (fixed) dimension $d$, while preserving the features of the planar algorithm. The algorithm introduces a novel technique which combines linear programming and projections for approximating Euclidean distances. The previous best approximation ratio for dispersion in disjoint disks, even when all disks have the same radius, was $1/2$. Our results give a partial answer to an open question raised by Cabello, who asked whether the ratio $1/2$ could be improved.

Uniform spacings are defined as the clockwise arc-lengths between the successive points from this sample. We are interested in the asymptotic behavior of the sum of functions of the m-tuples of successive spacings under the assumption that m can grow together with n. Asymptotic formulas for the expectation and variance of the sum and its asymptotic normality are established.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop Terence Tao's harmonic analysis method and apply it to restricted sumsets. The well-known Cauchy–Davenport theorem asserts that if ∅≠A, B⊆Z/pZ with p a prime, then |A+B|⩾min{p,|A|+|B|−1}, where A+B={a+b:a∈A,b∈B}. In 2005, Terence Tao gave a harmonic analysis proof of the Cauchy–Davenport theorem, by applying a new form of the uncertainty principle on Fourier transform. We modify Tao's method so that it can be used to prove the following extension of the Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture: If A,B,S are non-empty subsets of Z/pZ with p a prime, then |{a+b:a∈A,b∈B,a−b∉S}|⩾min{p,|A|+|B|−2|S|−1}.
