However, no closed form of this number is known. Here, we determine its closed form representation in terms of the inverse regularized beta function.

Abstract:Given a finite family of compact subsets of the complex plane we propose a certificate of mutual non-overlapping with respect to area measure. The criterion is stated as a couple of positivity conditions imposed on a four argument analytic/anti-analytic kernel defined in a neighborhood of infinity. In case the compact sets are closures of quadrature domains the respective kernel is rational, enabling an effective matrix analysis algorithm for the non-overlapping decision. The simplest situation of two disks is presented in detail from a matrix model perspective as well as from a Riemann surface potential theoretic interpretation.

Abstract:We provide a tight result for a fundamental problem arising from packing disks into a circular container: The critical density of packing disks in a disk is 0.5. This implies that any set of (not necessarily equal) disks of total area $\delta\leq 1/2$ can always be packed into a disk of area 1; on the other hand, for any $\varepsilon>0$ there are sets of disks of area $1/2+\varepsilon$ that cannot be packed. The proof uses a careful manual analysis, complemented by a minor automatic part that is based on interval arithmetic. Beyond the basic mathematical importance, our result is also useful as a blackbox lemma for the analysis of recursive packing algorithms.

Abstract:We present three new approximation algorithms with improved constant ratios for selecting $n$ points in $n$ disks such that the minimum pairwise distance among the points is maximized. (1) A very simple $O(n\log n)$-time algorithm with ratio $0.511$ for disjoint unit disks. (2) An LP-based algorithm with ratio $0.707$ for disjoint disks of arbitrary radii that uses a linear number of variables and constraints, and runs in polynomial time. (3) A hybrid algorithm with ratio either $0.4487$ or $0.4674$ for (not necessarily disjoint) unit disks that uses an algorithm of Cabello in combination with either the simple $O(n\log n)$-time algorithm or the LP-based algorithm. The LP algorithm can be extended for disjoint balls of arbitrary radii in $\RR^d$, for any (fixed) dimension $d$, while preserving the features of the planar algorithm. The algorithm introduces a novel technique which combines linear programming and projections for approximating Euclidean distances. The previous best approximation ratio for dispersion in disjoint disks, even when all disks have the same radius, was $1/2$. Our results give a partial answer to an open question raised by Cabello, who asked whether the ratio $1/2$ could be improved.

Abstract:A classical result of Dowker (Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 50: 120-122, 1944) states that for any plane convex body $K$, the areas of the maximum (resp. minimum) area convex $n$-gons inscribed (resp. circumscribed) in $K$ is a concave (resp. convex) sequence. It is known that this theorem remains true if we replace area by perimeter, or convex $n$-gons by disk-$n$-gons, obtained as the intersection of $n$ closed Euclidean unit disks. It has been proved recently that if $C$ is the unit disk of a normed plane, then the same properties hold for the area of $C$-$n$-gons circumscribed about a $C$-convex disk $K$ and for the perimeters of $C$-$n$-gons inscribed or circumscribed about a $C$-convex disk $K$, but for a typical origin-symmetric convex disk $C$ with respect to Hausdorff distance, there is a $C$-convex disk $K$ such that the sequence of the areas of the maximum area $C$-$n$-gons inscribed in $K$ is not concave. The aim of this paper is to investigate this question if we replace the topology induced by Hausdorff distance with a topology induced by the surface area measure of the boundary of $C$.

A reverse isoperimetric inequality for convex shapes with inclusion constraint

Abstract:The convex shape contained in a disk having prescribed area and maximal perimeter is completely characterized in terms of the area fraction. The solution is always a polygon having all but one sides equal. The lengths of the sides are characterized through explicit equations. The case of more general containing shapes is also discussed from both theoretical and numerical perspectives.

Abstract:We prove weighted isoperimetric inequalities for smooth, bounded, and simply connected domains. More precisely, we show that the moment of inertia of inner parallel curves for domains with fixed perimeter attains its maximum for a disk. This inequality, which was previously only known for convex domains, allows us to extend an isoperimetric inequality for the magnetic Robin Laplacian to non-convex centrally symmetric domains. Furthermore, we extend our isoperimetric inequality for moments of inertia, which are second moments, to $p$-th moments for all $p$ smaller than or equal to two. We also show that the disk is a strict local maximiser in the nearly circular, centrally symmetric case for all $p$ strictly less than three, and that the inequality fails for all $p$ strictly bigger than three.

Abstract:For a convex body C in R, what is the smallest number f = fd(C) such that any sequence of smaller homothetic copies of C whose total volume is at least f times the volume of C permits a translative covering of C? László Fejes Tóth conjectured in 1984 that f2(C) ≤ 3 for any convex body C in the plane. This conjecture has been only confirmed for parallelograms and triangles: Moon and Moser had shown in 1967 that f2(C) = 3 for a square C. Since fd(C) is invariant under affine transformation of C, it follows from Moon and Moser’s result that f2(C) = 3 for any parallelogram C. In 2003, Füredi settled the case of triangles with a sharper bound, by showing that f2(C) = 2 for a triangle C, and thus confirming a stronger conjecture of A. Bezdek and K. Bezdek for this case. For an arbitrary planar convex body C, the current best bound is f2(C) ≤ 6.5, due to Januszewski. In this paper, we prove that f2(D) < 3 for a disk D, and thereby confirm the conjecture of László Fejes Tóth for disks. We also present the first non-trivial bound for covering a disk by disks in the online model. Computing Diameter +1 in Truly Subquadratic Time for Unit-Disk Graphs

Abstract:Finding the diameter of a graph in general cannot be done in truly subquadratic assuming the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH), even when the underlying graph is unweighted and sparse. When restricting to concrete classes of graphs and assuming SETH, planar graphs and minor-free graphs admit truly subquadratic algorithms, while geometric intersection graphs of unit balls, congruent equilateral triangles, and unit segments do not. Unit-disk graphs are one of the major open cases where the complexity of diameter computation remains unknown. More generally, it is conjectured that a truly-subquadratic time algorithm exists for pseudo-disk graphs where each pair of objects has at most two intersections on the boundary. In this paper, we show a truly-subquadratic algorithm of running time $\tilde{O}(n^{2-1/18})$, for finding the diameter in a unit-disk graph, whose output differs from the optimal solution by at most 1. This is the first algorithm that provides an additive guarantee in distortion, independent of the size or the diameter of the graph. Our algorithm requires two important technical elements. First, we show that for the intersection graph of pseudo-disks, the graph VC-dimension, either of $k$-hop balls or the distance encoding vectors, is 4. Second, we introduce a clique-based $r$-clustering for geometric intersection graphs, which is an analog of the $r$-division construction for planar graphs. We also showcase the new techniques by establishing new results for distance oracles for unit-disk graphs with subquadratic storage and $O(1)$ query time. The results naturally extend to unit $L_1$- or $L_\infty$-disks and fat pseudo-disks of similar size. Last, if the pseudo-disks additionally have bounded ply, we have a truly-subquadratic algorithm to find the exact diameter.

Bipartizing (Pseudo-)Disk Graphs: Approximation with a Ratio Better than 3

Abstract:In a disk graph, every vertex corresponds to a disk in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and two vertices are connected by an edge whenever the two corresponding disks intersect. Disk graphs form an important class of geometric intersection graphs, which generalizes both planar graphs and unit-disk graphs. We study a fundamental optimization problem in algorithmic graph theory, Bipartization (also known as Odd Cycle Transversal), on the class of disk graphs. The goal of Bipartization is to delete a minimum number of vertices from the input graph such that the resulting graph is bipartite. A folklore (polynomial-time) $3$-approximation algorithm for Bipartization on disk graphs follows from the classical framework of Goemans and Williamson [Combinatorica'98] for cycle-hitting problems. For over two decades, this result has remained the best known approximation for the problem (in fact, even for Bipartization on unit-disk graphs). In this paper, we achieve the first improvement upon this result, by giving a $(3-\alpha)$-approximation algorithm for Bipartization on disk graphs, for some constant $\alpha>0$. Our algorithm directly generalizes to the broader class of pseudo-disk graphs. Furthermore, our algorithm is robust in the sense that it does not require a geometric realization of the input graph to be given.

Abstract:We show that if $A$ is a set of mutually orthogonal exponentials with respect to the unit disk then $|A \cap [-R, R]^2| \lesssim_\varepsilon R^{3/5+\varepsilon}$ holds. This improves the previous bound of $R^{2/3}$ by Iosevich--Kolountzakis. The main new ingredient in the proof is a variant of Marstrand's projection theorem.

On Line-Separable Weighted Unit-Disk Coverage and Related Problems

Abstract:Given a set $P$ of $n$ points and a set $S$ of $n$ weighted disks in the plane, the disk coverage problem is to compute a subset of disks of smallest total weight such that the union of the disks in the subset covers all points of $P$. The problem is NP-hard. In this paper, we consider a line-separable unit-disk version of the problem where all disks have the same radius and their centers are separated from the points of $P$ by a line $\ell$. We present an $O(n^{3/2}\log^2 n)$ time algorithm for the problem. This improves the previously best work of $O(n^2\log n)$ time. Our result leads to an algorithm of $O(n^{{7}/{2}}\log^2 n)$ time for the halfplane coverage problem (i.e., using $n$ weighted halfplanes to cover $n$ points), an improvement over the previous $O(n^4\log n)$ time solution. If all halfplanes are lower ones, our algorithm runs in $O(n^{{3}/{2}}\log^2 n)$ time, while the previous best algorithm takes $O(n^2\log n)$ time. Using duality, the hitting set problems under the same settings can be solved with similar time complexities.

Revisiting mean-square approximation by polynomials in the unit disk

Abstract:For a positive finite Borel measure $\mu$ compactly supported in the complex plane, the space $\mathcal{P}^2(\mu)$ is the closure of the analytic polynomials in the Lebesgue space $L^2(\mu)$. According to Thomson's famous result, any space $\mathcal{P}^2(\mu)$ decomposes as an orthogonal sum of pieces which are essentially analytic, and a residual $L^2$-space. We study the structure of this decomposition for a class of Borel measures $\mu$ supported on the closed unit disk for which the part $\mu_\mathbb{D}$, living in the open disk $\mathbb{D}$, is radial and decreases at least exponentially fast near the boundary of the disk. For the considered class of measures, we give a precise form of the Thomson decompsition. In particular, we confirm a conjecture of Kriete and MacCluer from 1990, which gives an analog to Szegö's classical theorem.

Abstract:For a planar point-set P , let D ( P ) be the minimum number of pairwise-disjoint empty disks such that each point in P lies on the boundary of some disk. Further define D ( n ) as the maximum of D ( P ) over all n -element point sets. Hosono and Urabe recently conjectured that D(n) = ⌈ n/2 ⌉ . Here we show that D(n) ≥ n/2 + n/236 - O(√(n)) and thereby disprove this conjecture.
The Double Bubble Problem in the Hexagonal Norm

Abstract:We study the double bubble problem where the perimeter is taken with respect to the hexagonal norm, i.e. the norm whose unit circle in $\mathbb{R}^2$ is the regular hexagon. We provide an elementary proof for the existence of minimizing sets for volume ratio parameter $\alpha\in (0,1]$ by arguing that any minimizer must belong to a small family of parameterized sets. This family is further simplified by showing that $60^{\circ}$ angles are not optimal as well as other geometric exclusions. We then provide a minimizer for all $\alpha\in(0,1]$ except at a single point, for which we find two minimizing configurations.

The aim of our paper is to investigate these problems for $C$-$n$-gons, defined as intersections of $n$ translates of the unit disk $C$ of a normed plane. In particular, we show that Dowker's theorem remains true for the areas and the perimeters of circumscribed $C$-$n$-gons, and the perimeters of inscribed $C$-$n$-gons. We also show that in the family of origin-symmetric plane convex bodies, for a typical element $C$ with respect to Hausdorff distance, Dowker's theorem for the areas of inscribed $C$-$n$-gons fails.
