Abstract:We show that a minimal dynamical system $(X,\mathbb{Z})$ on a compact metric $X$ with mdim$X=d$ admits for every natural $k>d$ an equivariant map to the shift $([0,1]^k)^{\mathbb{Z}}$ such that each fiber of this map contains at most $[k/(k-d)]k/(k-d)$ points.

Abstract:The Hurewicz theorem is a fundamental result in classical dimension theory concerning continuous maps which lower topological dimension. We study whether or not its analogue holds for mean dimension of dynamical systems. Our first main result shows that an analogue of the Hurewicz theorem does not hold for mean dimension in general. Our second main result shows that it holds true if a base system has zero mean dimension.

Abstract:In this note, we show several variational principles for metric mean dimension. First we prove a variational principles in terms of Shapira's entropy related to finite open covers. Second we establish a variational principle in terms of Katok's entropy. Finally using these two variational principles we develop a variational principle in terms of Brin-Katok local entropy.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly elucidate a close relationship between the topological entropy and mean dimension theory for actions of polynomial growth groups. We show that metric mean dimension and mean Hausdorff dimension of subshifts with respect to the lower rank subgroup are equal to its topological entropy multiplied by the growth rate of the subgroup. Meanwhile, we also prove the above result holds for the rate distortion dimension of subshifts with respect to the lower rank subgroup and measure entropy. Furthermore, some relevant examples are indicated.

Abstract:We prove a variational principle for the upper and lower metric mean dimension of level sets \[ \left\{x\in X: \lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{1}{n}\sum_{j=0}^{n-1}\varphi(f^{j}(x))=\alpha\right\} \] associated to continuous potentials $\varphi:X\to \mathbb R$ and continuous dynamics $f:X\to X$ defined on compact metric spaces and exhibiting the specification property. This result relates the upper and lower metric mean dimension of the above mentioned sets with growth rates of measure-theoretic entropy of partitions decreasing in diameter associated to some special measures. Moreover, we present several examples to which our result may be applied to. Similar results were previously known for the topological entropy and for the topological pressure.

Abstract:Abstract We generalize to a broader class of decoupled measures a result of Ziv and Merhav on universal estimation of the specific cross (or relative) entropy, originally for a pair of multilevel Markov measures. Our generalization focuses on abstract decoupling conditions and covers pairs of suitably regular g-measures and pairs of equilibrium measures arising from the “small space of interactions” in mathematical statistical mechanics.

Abstract:Consider a topological dynamical system $(X, T)$ endowed with the metric $d$. We introduce a novel function as $\overline{BF}(x, y) = \limsup_{n-m \rightarrow +\infty} \inf_{\sigma \in S_{n,m}} \frac{1}{n-m} \sum_{k=m}^{n-1} d\left(T^{k} x, T^{\sigma(k)} y\right)$, where the permutation group $S_{n,m}$ is utilized. It is demonstrated that $BF(x, y)$ exists when $x, y \in X$ are uniformly generic points. Leveraging this function, we introduce the concept of weak Banach mean equicontinuity and establish that the dynamical system $(X, T)$ exhibits weak Banach mean equicontinuity if and only if the uniform time averages $f_B^{*}(x) = \lim_{n-m \rightarrow +\infty} \frac{1}{n-m} \sum_{k=m}^{n-1} f\left(T^{k} x\right)$ are continuous for all $f \in C(X)$. Finally, we demonstrate that in the case of a transitive system, the equivalence between weak Banach mean equicontinuity and weak mean equicontinuity is established.

Abstract:We define the entropy of an infinite family C\mathcal {C} of measurable sets in a probability space, and show that a family has zero entropy if and only if it is totally bounded under the symmetric difference semi-metric. Our principal result is that the mean ergodic theorem holds uniformly for C\mathcal {C} under every ergodic transformation if and only if C\mathcal {C} has zero entropy. When the entropy of C\mathcal {C} is positive, we establish a strong converse showing that the uniform mean ergodic theorem fails generically in every isomorphism class, including the isomorphism classes of Bernoulli transformations. As a corollary of these results, we establish that every strong mixing transformation is uniformly strong mixing on C\mathcal {C} if and only if the entropy of C\mathcal {C} is zero, and we obtain a corresponding result for weak mixing transformations.

Abstract:Mean dimension may decrease after taking the natural extension. In this paper we show that mean dimension is preserved by natural extension for an endomorphism on a compact metrizable abelian group. As an application, we obtain that the mean dimension of an algebraic cellular automaton coincides withthe mean dimension of its natural extension, which strengthens a result of Burguet and Shi \cite{BS21} with a different proof.

In this article, we investigate the existence of columns containing an equal or greater number of ones than zeros. Specifically, the existence of such columns when the rows of the matrix are closed under $\textit{material conditional}$ leads us to a weaker version of the $\textit{Union-Closed Set Conjecture}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an extension of topological sequence entropy and d-sequence entropy for a dynamical system on a non-compact metric space. Then we give some elementary properties of those sequence entropy. In particular, we establish a variational principle which states that for a class of sequences, the supremum of the measure-theoretic sequence entropies and the minimum of the d-sequence entropies always coincide, and they are not less than the topological sequence entropy. Finally, we introduce the concepts of mean sequence dimension and maximal pattern mean topological dimension and give some properties of them.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the investigation of the weighted mean topological dimension in dynamical systems. We show that the weighted mean dimension is not larger than the weighted metric mean dimension, which generalizes the classical result of Lindenstrauss and Weiss \cite{LWE}. We also establish the relationship between the weighted mean dimension and the weighted topological entropy of dynamical systems, which indicates that each system with finite weighted topological entropy or small boundary property has zero weighted mean dimension.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a finite dimensional compact metric space and $K^\mathbb{Z}$ the full shift on the alphabet $K$. We prove that its mean dimension is given by $\dim K$ or $\dim K-1$ depending on the "type" of $K$. We propose a problem which seems interesting from the view point of infinite dimensional topology.

Abstract:It is well-known that the relativized variational principle established by Bogenschutz and Kifer connects the fiber topological entropy and fiber measure-theoretic entropy. In context of random dynamical systems, metric mean dimension was introduced to characterize infinite fiber entropy systems. We give four types of measure-theoretic $\epsilon$-entropies, called measure-theoretic entropy of partitions decreasing in diameter, Shapira's entropy, Katok's entropy and Brin-Katok local entropy, and establish four variational principles for metric mean dimension.
