Abstract:We describe an algorithm for testing the completeness of caps in PG(r; q), q even. It allowed us to check that the 95256-cap in PG(12; 4) recently found by Fu el al. (see [14]) is complete.

Abstract:Let m_2(n, q) be the maximum size of k for which there exists a k-cap in PG(n, q), and let m'_2(n, q) be the second largest value of k for which there exists a complete k-cap in PG(n, q). In this paper Chao's upper bound q^2 - q + 5 for m'_2(3, q), q even and q \geq 8, will be improved. As a corollary new bounds for m_2(n, q), q even, q\geq 8 and n \geq 4, are obtained. Cao and Ou published a better bound but there seems to be a gap in their proof.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a 430-cap of $\mathrm{PG}(6,4)$ having two intersection sizes with respect to hyperplanes. We show that no hyperplane of $\mathrm{PG}(6,4)$ intersects $\mathcal{C}$ in a Hill 78-cap. So if it can be shown that the Hill 78-cap of $\mathrm{PG}(5,4)$ is projectively unique, then such a 430-cap does not exist, or equivalently, a two-weight $[430,7]_{\mathbb{F}_4}$ linear code with dual weight at least 4, does not exist.

Abstract:A cap in PG(r,q) is a set of points, no three of which are collinear. A cap is said to be transitive if its automorphism group in PGammaL(r+1,q) acts transtively on the cap, and co-transitive if the automorphism group acts transtively on the cap's complement in PG(r,q). Transitive, co-transitive caps are characterized as being one of: an elliptic quadric in PG(3,q); a Suzuki-Tits ovoid in PG(3,q); a hyperoval in PG(2,4); a cap of size 11 in PG(4,3); the complement of a hyperplane in PG(r,2); or a union of Singer orbits in PG(r,q) whose automorphism group comes from a subgroup of GammaL(1,q^{r+1}).

Abstract:Cameron-Liebler line classes were introduced in [5], and motivated by a question about orbits of collineation groups of PG(3,q). These line classes have appeared in different contexts under disguised names such as Boolean degree one functions, regular codes of covering radius one, and tight sets. In this paper we construct an infinite family of Cameron-Liebler line classes in PG(3,q) with new parameter x=(q+1)2/3 for all prime powers q congruent to 2 modulo 3. The examples obtained when q is an odd power of two represent the first infinite family of Cameron-Liebler line classes in PG(3,q), q even.

Abstract:We prove that, if $q$ is large enough, the set of the $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}$-rational points of the Hermitian curve is a complete $(q+1)$-arc in $\mathrm{PG}(2,\mathbb{F}_{q^6})$, addressing an open case from a recent paper by Korchmáros, Szőnyi and Nagy. An algebraic approach based on the investigation of some algebraic varieties attached to the arc is used.

Upper bounds for the number of substructures in finite geometries from the container method

Abstract:We use techniques from algebraic and extremal combinatorics to derive upper bounds on the number of independent sets in several (hyper)graphs arising from finite geometry. In this way, we obtain asymptotically sharp upper bounds for partial ovoids and EKR-sets of flags in polar spaces, line spreads in $\mathrm{PG}(2r-1,q)$ and plane spreads in $\mathrm{PG}(5,q)$, and caps in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$. The latter result extends work due to Roche-Newton and Warren and Bhowmick and Roche-Newton. Finally, we investigate caps in $p$-random subsets of $\mathrm{PG}(r,q)$, which parallels recent work for arcs in projective planes by Bhowmick and Roche-Newton, and by Roche-Newton and Warren, and arcs in projective spaces by Chen, Liu, Nie and Zeng.

Saturating linear sets in PG$(2,q^4)$

Abstract:Bonini, Borello and Byrne started the study of saturating linear sets in Desarguesian projective spaces, in connection with the covering problem in the rank metric. In this paper we study \emph{$1$-saturating} linear sets in PG$(2,q^4)$, that is $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets in PG$(2,q^4)$ with the property that their secant lines cover the entire plane. By making use of a characterization of generalized Gabidulin codes, we prove that the rank of such a linear set is at least $5$. This answers to a recent question posed by Bartoli, Borello and Marino.

Abstract:Minimal 1-saturating sets in the projective plane $PG(2,q)$ are considered. They correspond to covering codes which can be applied to many branches of combinatorics and information theory, as data compression, compression with distortion, broadcasting in interconnection network, write-once memory or steganography (see \cite{Coh} and \cite{BF2008}). The full classification of all the minimal 1-saturating sets in PG(2,9) and PG(2,11) and the classification of minimal 1-saturating sets of smallest size in PG(2,q), $16\leq q\leq 23$ are given. These results have been found using a computer-based exhaustive search that exploits projective equivalence properties.

Abstract:We consider a non-degenerate conic in $\PG(2,q^2)$, $q$ odd, that is tangent to $\ell_\infty$ and look at its structure in the Bruck-Bose representation in $\PG(4,q)$. We determine which combinatorial properties of this set of points in $\PG(4,q)$ are needed to reconstruct the conic in $\PG(2,q^2)$. That is, we define a set $\C$ in $\PG(4,q)$ with $q^2$ points that satisfies certain combinatorial properties. We then show that if $q\ge 7$, we can use $\C$ to construct a regular spread $§$ in the hyperplane at infinity of $\PG(4,q)$, and that $\C$ corresponds to a conic in the Desarguesian plane $¶(§)\cong\PG(2,q^2)$ constructed via the Bruck-Bose correspondence.

Abstract:Ellenberg and Gijswijt gave the best known asymptotic upper bound for the cardinality of subsets of $\mathbb F_q^n$ without 3-term arithmetic progressions. We improve this bound by a factor $\sqrt{n}$. In the case $q=3$, we also obtain more explicit upper bounds for the Cap Set Problem.

Abstract:A $2$-semiarc is a pointset ${\mathcal S}_k$ with the property that the number of tangent lines to ${\mathcal S}_k$ at each of its points is two. Using some theoretical results and computer aided search, the complete classification of $2$-semiarcs in PG$(2,q)$ is given for $q\leq 7,$ the spectrum of their sizes is determined for $q\leq 9$, and some results about the existence are proven for $q=11$ and $q=13.$ For several sizes of $2$-semiarcs in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, $q\leq 7$, classification results have been obtained by theoretical proofs.

Abstract:The maximum scattered linear sets in $PG(1,q^n)$ have been completely classified for $n \le 4$ by Csajbók-Zanella and Lavrauw-Van de Voorde. Here a wide class of linear sets in $PG(1,q^5)$ is studied which depends on two parameters. Conditions for the existence, in this class, of possible new maximum scattered linear sets in $PG(1,q^5)$ are exhibited.

Abstract:An s-cap n-flat, or an n-dimensional cap of size s, is a pair (S,F) where F is an n-dimensional affine space over Z/3Z and the size-s subset S of F contains no triple of collinear points. The cap set problem in dimension n asks for the largest s for which an s-cap n-flat exists. This series of articles investigates the cap set problem in dimensions up to and including 7. This is the second paper in the series. By applying and adapting methods from the first paper in the series, we systematically classify all 5-dimensional caps of size at least 41.

Abstract:For $p$ a prime, $G$ a finite group and $A$ a normal subset of elements of order $p$, we prove that if $A^2 = \{ab \mid a, b \in A\}$ consists of $p$-elements then $Q = \langle A \rangle$ is soluble. Further, if $O_p(G) = 1$, we show that $p$ is odd, $F(Q)$ is a non-trivial $p'$-group and $Q/F(Q)$ is an elementary abelian $p$-group. We also provide examples which show this conclusion is best possible.

Abstract:An $(n,r)$-arc in $PG(2,q)$ is a set $B$ of points in $PG(2,q)$ such that each line in $PG(2,q)$ contains at most $r$ elements of $B$ and such that there is at least one line containing exactly $r$ elements of $B$. The value $m_r(2,q)$ denotes the maximal number $n$ of points in the projective geometry $PG(2,q)$ for which an $(n,r)$-arc exists. By explicitly constructing $(n,r)$-arcs using prescribed automorphisms and integer linear programming we obtain some improved lower bounds for $m_r(2,q)$: $m_{10}(2,16)\ge 144$, $m_3(2,25)\ge 39$, $m_{18}(2,25)\ge 418$, $m_9(2,27)\ge 201$, $m_{14}(2,29)\ge 364$, $m_{25}(2,29)\ge 697$, $m_{25}(2,31)\ge 734$. Furthermore, we show by systematically excluding possible automorphisms that putative $(44,5)$-arcs, $(90,9)$-arcs in $PG(2,11)$, and $(39,4)$-arcs in $PG(2,13)$ -- in case of their existence -- are rigid, i.e. they all would only admit the trivial automorphism group of order $1$. In addition, putative $(50,5)$-arcs, $(65,6)$-arcs, $(119,10)$-arcs, $(133,11)$-arcs, and $(146,12)$-arcs in $PG(2,13)$ would be rigid or would admit a unique automorphism group (up to conjugation) of order $2$.

Abstract:A $t$-fold packing of a projective space $\rm{PG}_n(q)$ is a collection $\mathcal{P}$ of line-spreads such that each line of $\rm{PG}_n(q)$ occurs in precisely $t$ spreads in $\mathcal{P}$. A $t$-fold packing $\mathcal{P}$ is transitive if a subgroup of $\rm{P\Gamma L}_{n+1}(q)$ preserves and acts transitively on $\mathcal{P}$. We give a construction for a transitive $(q-1)$-fold packing of $\rm{PG}_n(q)$, where $q=2^k$, for any odd positive integers $n$ and $k$, such that $n\geq 3$. This generalises a construction of Baker from 1976 for the case $q=2$.
