Abstract:Let m_2(n, q) be the maximum size of k for which there exists a k-cap in PG(n, q), and let m'_2(n, q) be the second largest value of k for which there exists a complete k-cap in PG(n, q). In this paper Chao's upper bound q^2 - q + 5 for m'_2(3, q), q even and q \geq 8, will be improved. As a corollary new bounds for m_2(n, q), q even, q\geq 8 and n \geq 4, are obtained. Cao and Ou published a better bound but there seems to be a gap in their proof.

Abstract:A $t$-fold packing of a projective space $\rm{PG}_n(q)$ is a collection $\mathcal{P}$ of line-spreads such that each line of $\rm{PG}_n(q)$ occurs in precisely $t$ spreads in $\mathcal{P}$. A $t$-fold packing $\mathcal{P}$ is transitive if a subgroup of $\rm{P\Gamma L}_{n+1}(q)$ preserves and acts transitively on $\mathcal{P}$. We give a construction for a transitive $(q-1)$-fold packing of $\rm{PG}_n(q)$, where $q=2^k$, for any odd positive integers $n$ and $k$, such that $n\geq 3$. This generalises a construction of Baker from 1976 for the case $q=2$.

Abstract:A cap in PG(r,q) is a set of points, no three of which are collinear. A cap is said to be transitive if its automorphism group in PGammaL(r+1,q) acts transtively on the cap, and co-transitive if the automorphism group acts transtively on the cap's complement in PG(r,q). Transitive, co-transitive caps are characterized as being one of: an elliptic quadric in PG(3,q); a Suzuki-Tits ovoid in PG(3,q); a hyperoval in PG(2,4); a cap of size 11 in PG(4,3); the complement of a hyperplane in PG(r,2); or a union of Singer orbits in PG(r,q) whose automorphism group comes from a subgroup of GammaL(1,q^{r+1}).

On two non-existence results for Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$

Abstract:This paper focuses on non-existence results for Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets. A Cameron-Liebler $k$-set is a collection of $k$-spaces in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ or $\mathrm{AG}(n,q)$ admitting a certain parameter $x$, which is dependent on the size of this collection. One of the main research questions remains the (non-)existence of Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets with parameter $x$. This paper improves two non-existence results. First we show that the parameter of a non-trivial Cameron-Liebler $k$-set in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ should be larger than $q^{n-\frac{5k}{2}-1}$, which is an improvement of an earlier known lower bound. Secondly, we prove a modular equality on the parameter $x$ of Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ with $x<\frac{q^{n-k}-1}{q^{k+1}-1}$, $n\geq 2k+1$, $n-k+1\geq 7$ and $n-k$ even. In the affine case we show a similar result for $n-k+1\geq 3$ and $n-k$ even. This is a generalization of earlier known modular equalities in the projective and affine case.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be the graph whose vertices are the chambers of the finite projective $3$-space PG$(3,q)$, with two vertices being adjacent if and only if the corresponding chambers are in general position. We show that a maximal independent set of vertices of $\Gamma$ contains $q^4+3q^3+4q^2+3q+1$, or $3q^3+5q^2+3q+1$, or at most $3q^3+4q^2+3q+2$ elements. For $q\geq 4$ the structure of the largest maximal independent sets is described. For $q\geq 7$ the structure of the maximal independent sets of the three largest cardinalities is described. Using the cardinality of the second largest maximal independent sets, we show that the chromatic number of $\Gamma$ is $q^2+q$.

Abstract:Let Γ be the graph whose vertices are the chambers of the finite projective 3‐space PG(3,q) , with two vertices being adjacent if and only if the corresponding chambers are in general position. We show that a maximal independent set of vertices of Γ contains q4+3q3+4q2+3q+1 , or 3q3+5q2+3q+1 , or at most 3q3+4q2+3q+2 elements. For q≥4 the structure of the largest maximal independent sets is described. For q≥7 the structure of the maximal independent sets of the three largest cardinalities is described. Using the cardinality of the second largest maximal independent sets, we show that the chromatic number of Γ is q2+q .

Upper bounds for the number of substructures in finite geometries from the container method

Abstract:We use techniques from algebraic and extremal combinatorics to derive upper bounds on the number of independent sets in several (hyper)graphs arising from finite geometry. In this way, we obtain asymptotically sharp upper bounds for partial ovoids and EKR-sets of flags in polar spaces, line spreads in $\mathrm{PG}(2r-1,q)$ and plane spreads in $\mathrm{PG}(5,q)$, and caps in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$. The latter result extends work due to Roche-Newton and Warren and Bhowmick and Roche-Newton. Finally, we investigate caps in $p$-random subsets of $\mathrm{PG}(r,q)$, which parallels recent work for arcs in projective planes by Bhowmick and Roche-Newton, and by Roche-Newton and Warren, and arcs in projective spaces by Chen, Liu, Nie and Zeng.

Abstract:An $(n,r)$-arc in $PG(2,q)$ is a set $B$ of points in $PG(2,q)$ such that each line in $PG(2,q)$ contains at most $r$ elements of $B$ and such that there is at least one line containing exactly $r$ elements of $B$. The value $m_r(2,q)$ denotes the maximal number $n$ of points in the projective geometry $PG(2,q)$ for which an $(n,r)$-arc exists. By explicitly constructing $(n,r)$-arcs using prescribed automorphisms and integer linear programming we obtain some improved lower bounds for $m_r(2,q)$: $m_{10}(2,16)\ge 144$, $m_3(2,25)\ge 39$, $m_{18}(2,25)\ge 418$, $m_9(2,27)\ge 201$, $m_{14}(2,29)\ge 364$, $m_{25}(2,29)\ge 697$, $m_{25}(2,31)\ge 734$. Furthermore, we show by systematically excluding possible automorphisms that putative $(44,5)$-arcs, $(90,9)$-arcs in $PG(2,11)$, and $(39,4)$-arcs in $PG(2,13)$ -- in case of their existence -- are rigid, i.e. they all would only admit the trivial automorphism group of order $1$. In addition, putative $(50,5)$-arcs, $(65,6)$-arcs, $(119,10)$-arcs, $(133,11)$-arcs, and $(146,12)$-arcs in $PG(2,13)$ would be rigid or would admit a unique automorphism group (up to conjugation) of order $2$.

We show that no hyperplane of $\mathrm{PG}(6,4)$ intersects $\mathcal{C}$ in a Hill 78-cap. So if it can be shown that the Hill 78-cap of $\mathrm{PG}(5,4)$ is projectively unique, then such a 430-cap does not exist, or equivalently, a two-weight $[430,7]_{\mathbb{F}_4}$ linear code with dual weight at least 4, does not exist.

A $k^{\frac{q}{q-2}}$ Lower Bound for Odd Query Locally Decodable Codes from Bipartite Kikuchi Graphs

Abstract:A code $C \colon \{0,1\}^k \to \{0,1\}^n$ is a $q$-query locally decodable code ($q$-LDC) if one can recover any chosen bit $b_i$ of the message $b \in \{0,1\}^k$ with good confidence by querying a corrupted string $\tilde{x}$ of the codeword $x = C(b)$ in at most $q$ coordinates. For $2$ queries, the Hadamard code is a $2$-LDC of length $n = 2^k$, and this code is in fact essentially optimal. For $q \geq 3$, there is a large gap in our understanding: the best constructions achieve $n = \exp(k^{o(1)})$, while prior to the recent work of [AGKM23], the best lower bounds were $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^{\frac{q}{q-2}})$ for $q$ even and $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^{\frac{q+1}{q-1}})$ for $q$ odd. The recent work of [AGKM23] used spectral methods to prove a lower bound of $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^3)$ for $q = 3$, thus achieving the "$k^{\frac{q}{q-2}}$ bound" for an odd value of $q$. However, their proof does not extend to any odd $q \geq 5$. In this paper, we prove a $q$-LDC lower bound of $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^{\frac{q}{q-2}})$ for any odd $q$. Our key technical idea is the use of an imbalanced bipartite Kikuchi graph, which gives a simpler method to analyze spectral refutations of odd arity XOR without using the standard "Cauchy-Schwarz trick", a trick that typically produces random matrices with correlated entries and makes the analysis for odd arity XOR significantly more complicated than even arity XOR.

Abstract:Ellenberg and Gijswijt gave the best known asymptotic upper bound for the cardinality of subsets of $\mathbb F_q^n$ without 3-term arithmetic progressions. We improve this bound by a factor $\sqrt{n}$. In the case $q=3$, we also obtain more explicit upper bounds for the Cap Set Problem.

Here a wide class of linear sets in $PG(1,q^5)$ is studied which depends on two parameters. Abstract:A $2$-semiarc is a pointset ${\mathcal S}_k$ with the property that the number of tangent lines to ${\mathcal S}_k$ at each of its points is two. Using some theoretical results and computer aided search, the complete classification of $2$-semiarcs in PG$(2,q)$ is given for $q\leq 7,$ the spectrum of their sizes is determined for $q\leq 9$, and some results about the existence are proven for $q=11$ and $q=13.$ For several sizes of $2$-semiarcs in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, $q\leq 7$, classification results have been obtained by theoretical proofs.

Abstract:A well-known result of Kupitz from 1982 asserts that the maximal number of edges in a convex geometric graph (CGG) on $n$ vertices that does not contain $k+1$ pairwise disjoint edges is $kn$ (provided $n>2k$). For $k=1$ and $k=n/2-1$, the extremal examples are completely characterized. For all other values of $k$, the structure of the extremal examples is far from known: their total number is unknown, and only a few classes of examples were presented, that are almost symmetric, consisting roughly of the $kn$ "longest possible" edges of $CK(n)$, the complete CGG of order $n$. In order to understand further the structure of the extremal examples, we present a class of extremal examples that lie at the other end of the spectrum. Namely, we break the symmetry by requiring that, in addition, the graph admit an independent set that consists of $q$ consecutive vertices on the boundary of the convex hull. We show that such graphs exist as long as $q \leq n-2k$ and that this value of $q$ is optimal. We generalize our discussion to the following question: what is the maximal possible number $f(n,k,q)$ of edges in a CGG on $n$ vertices that does not contain $k+1$ pairwise disjoint edges, and, in addition, admits an independent set that consists of $q$ consecutive vertices on the boundary of the convex hull? We provide a complete answer to this question, determining $f(n,k,q)$ for all relevant values of $n,k$ and $q$.
