Abstract:Ellenberg and Gijswijt gave the best known asymptotic upper bound for the cardinality of subsets of $\mathbb F_q^n$ without 3-term arithmetic progressions. We improve this bound by a factor $\sqrt{n}$. In the case $q=3$, we also obtain more explicit upper bounds for the Cap Set Problem.

Abstract:An s-cap n-flat, or an n-dimensional cap of size s, is a pair (S,F) where F is an n-dimensional affine space over Z/3Z and the size-s subset S of F contains no triple of collinear points. The cap set problem in dimension n asks for the largest s for which an s-cap n-flat exists. This series of articles investigates the cap set problem in dimensions up to and including 7. This is the second paper in the series. By applying and adapting methods from the first paper in the series, we systematically classify all 5-dimensional caps of size at least 41.

Abstract:An s-cap n-flat is given by a set of s points, no three of which are on a common line, in an n-dimensional affine space over the field of three elements. The cap set problem in dimension n is: what is the maximum s such that there is an s-cap n-flat? The first two papers in this series of articles considered the cap set problem in dimensions up to and including 5. In this paper, which is the third in the series, we consider dimensions 6 and 7: we prove that every 110-cap 6-flat is a 112-cap 6-flat minus two cap points, and that there are no 289-cap 7-flats.

Abstract:A cap set in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$ is a subset that contains no three elements adding to 0. Building on a construction of Edel, a recent paper of Tyrrell gave the first improvement to the lower bound for a size of a cap set in two decades showing that, for large enough $n$, there is always a cap set in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$ of size at least $2.218^n$. This was shown by constructing what is called an $I(11,7)$ admissible set.

Abstract:We define a natural equivalence relation on collections of cards from the card game SET, and enumerate some of the equivalence classes, vastly generalizing the standard game. On this basis, we describe several alternative games for the SET deck, including the game of STUN, in which the goal is to find three cards with exactly two values in each attribute.

Abstract:Examination timetabling is a problem well known to the scheduling community. Its simplest version, which is the uncapacitated examination timetabling problem, is easily described and comprehended. Nevertheless, proof of optimality is notoriously difficult even for moderate size problems. In this paper, we describe the effort that our team exercised in finally proving the optimality of the sta83 instance of Carter's dataset. The problem was decomposed naturally in three parts and for each part a different approach managed to prove optimality of the currently best known solution. This work also presents optimal solutions to subproblems that exist in various public datasets problems and two best known solutions of such problems.

Abstract:Poset games are a class of combinatorial game that remain unsolved. Soltys and Wilson proved that computing wining strategies is in \textbf{PSPACE} and aside from special cases such as Nim and N-Free games, \textbf{P} time algorithms for finding ideal play are unknown. This paper presents methods calculate the nimber of posets games allowing for the classification of winning or losing positions. The results present an equivalence of ideal strategies on posets that are seemingly unrelated.

Upper bounds for the number of substructures in finite geometries from the container method

Abstract:We use techniques from algebraic and extremal combinatorics to derive upper bounds on the number of independent sets in several (hyper)graphs arising from finite geometry. In this way, we obtain asymptotically sharp upper bounds for partial ovoids and EKR-sets of flags in polar spaces, line spreads in $\mathrm{PG}(2r-1,q)$ and plane spreads in $\mathrm{PG}(5,q)$, and caps in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$. The latter result extends work due to Roche-Newton and Warren and Bhowmick and Roche-Newton. Finally, we investigate caps in $p$-random subsets of $\mathrm{PG}(r,q)$, which parallels recent work for arcs in projective planes by Bhowmick and Roche-Newton, and by Roche-Newton and Warren, and arcs in projective spaces by Chen, Liu, Nie and Zeng.

The success probability in Levine's hat problem, and independent sets in graphs

Abstract:Lionel Levine's hat challenge has $t$ players, each with a (very large, or infinite) stack of hats on their head, each hat independently colored at random black or white. The players are allowed to coordinate before the random colors are chosen, but not after. Each player sees all hats except for those on her own head. They then proceed to simultaneously try and each pick a black hat from their respective stacks. They are proclaimed successful only if they are all correct. Levine's conjecture is that the success probability tends to zero when the number of players grows. We prove that this success probability is strictly decreasing in the number of players, and present some connections to problems in graph theory: relating the size of the largest independent set in a graph and in a random induced subgraph of it, and bounding the size of a set of vertices intersecting every maximum-size independent set in a graph.

New lower bounds for three-term progression free sets in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$

Abstract:We prove new lower bounds on the maximum size of sets $A\subseteq \mathbb{F}_p^n$ or $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_m^n$ not containing three-term arithmetic progressions (consisting of three distinct points). More specifically, we prove that for any fixed integer $m\ge 2$ and sufficiently large $n$ (in terms of $m$), there exists a three-term progression free subset $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_m^n$ of size $|A|\ge (cm)^n$ for some absolute constant $c>1/2$. Such a bound for $c=1/2$ can be obtained with a classical construction of Salem and Spencer from 1942, and improving upon this value of $1/2$ has been a well-known open problem (our proof gives $c= 0.54$).

Abstract:Every polygon $P$ can be companioned by a cap polygon $\hat P$ such that $P$ and $\hat P$ serve as two parts of the boundary surface of a polyhedron $V$. Pairs of vertices on $P$ and $\hat P$ are identified successively to become vertices of $V$. In this paper, we study the cap construction that asserts equal angular defects at these pairings. We exhibit a linear relation that arises from the cap construction algorithm, which in turn demonstrates an abundance of polygons that satisfy the closed cap condition, that is, those that can successfully undergo the cap construction process.

Counting Matchings via Capacity Preserving Operators

Abstract:The notion of the capacity of a polynomial was introduced by Gurvits around 2005, originally to give drastically simplified proofs of the Van der Waerden lower bound for permanents of doubly stochastic matrices and Schrijver's inequality for perfect matchings of regular bipartite graphs. Since this seminal work, the notion of capacity has been utilized to bound various combinatorial quantities and to give polynomial-time algorithms to approximate such quantities (e.g., the number of bases of a matroid). These types of results are often proven by giving bounds on how much a particular differential operator can change the capacity of a given polynomial. In this paper, we unify the theory surrounding such capacity preserving operators by giving tight capacity preservation bounds for all nondegenerate real stability preservers. We then use this theory to give a new proof of a recent result of Csikvári, which settled Friedland's lower matching conjecture.

Abstract:The notion of abundance of certain type of configuration in certain large sets was first proved by Furstenberg and Glazner in 1998. After that many author investigate abundance of different types of configurations in different types of large sets. Hindman, Hosseini, Strauss and Tootkaboni recently introduced another notion of large sets called $CR$ sets. Then Debnath and De proved abundance of arithmetic progression in $CR$ sets for commutative semigroups. In the present article we investigate abundance of progressions in for non-commutative semigroups.

Algebraic sums of achievable sets involving Cantorvals

Abstract:In this paper we look at the topological type of algebraic sum of achievement sets. We show that there is a Cantorval such that the algebraic sum of its $k$ copies is still a Cantorval for any $k \in \mathbb{N}$. We also prove that for any $m,p \in (\mathbb{N}\setminus \{1\}) \cup \{\infty\}$, $p \geq m$, the algebraic sum of $k$ copies of a Cantor set can transit from a Cantor set to a Cantorval for $k=m$ and then to an interval for $k=p$. These two main results are based on a new characterization of sequences whose achievement sets are Cantorvals. We also define a new family of achievable Cantorvals which are not generated by multigeometric series. In the final section we discuss various decompositions of sequences related to the topological typology of achievement sets.

Context-Aware Patch Generation for Better Automated Program Repair

Abstract:The effectiveness of search-based automated program repair is limited in the number of correct patches that can be successfully generated. There are two causes of such limitation. First, the search space does not contain the correct patch. Second, the search space is huge and therefore the correct patch cannot be generated (ie correct patches are either generated after incorrect plausible ones or not generated within the time budget). To increase the likelihood of including the correct patches in the search space, we propose to work at a fine granularity in terms of AST nodes. This, however, will further enlarge the search space, increasing the challenge to find the correct patches. We address the challenge by devising a strategy to prioritize the candidate patches based on their likelihood of being correct. Specifically, we study the use of AST nodes' context information to estimate the likelihood. In this paper, we propose CapGen, a context-aware patch generation technique. The novelty which allows CapGen to produce more correct patches lies in three aspects: (1) The fine-granularity design enables it to find more correct fixing ingredients; (2) The context-aware prioritization of mutation operators enables it to constrain the search space; (3) Three context-aware models enable it to rank correct patches at high positions before incorrect plausible ones. We evaluate CapGen on Defects4J and compare it with the state-of-the-art program repair techniques. Our evaluation shows that CapGen outperforms and complements existing techniques. CapGen achieves a high precision of 84.00% and can prioritize the correct patches before 98.78% of the incorrect plausible ones.
The Capacity Constraint Physarum Solver

Abstract:Physarum polycephalum inspired algorithm (PPA), also known as the Physarum Solver, has attracted great attention. By modelling real-world problems into a graph with network flow and adopting proper equations to calculate the distance between the nodes in the graph, PPA could be used to solve system optimization problems or user equilibrium problems. However, some problems such as the maximum flow (MF) problem, minimum-cost-maximum-flow (MCMF) problem, and link-capacitated traffic assignment problem (CTAP), require the flow flowing through links to follow capacity constraints. Motivated by the lack of related PPA-based research, a novel framework, the capacitated physarum polycephalum inspired algorithm (CPPA), is proposed to allow capacity constraints toward link flow in the PPA. To prove the validity of the CPPA, we developed three applications of the CPPA, i.e., the CPPA for the MF problem (CPPA-MF), the CPPA for the MCFC problem, and the CPPA for the link-capacitated traffic assignment problem (CPPA-CTAP). In the experiments, all the applications of the CPPA solve the problems successfully. Some of them demonstrate efficiency compared to the baseline algorithms. The experimental results prove the validation of using the CPPA framework to control link flow in the PPA is valid. The CPPA is also very robust and easy to implement since it could be successfully applied in three different scenarios. The proposed method shows that: having the ability to control the maximum among flow flowing through links in the PPA, the CPPA could tackle more complex real-world problems in the future.

Abstract:The Consecutive-Ones Property (C1P) is a classical concept in discrete mathematics that has been used in several genomics applications, from physical mapping of contemporary genomes to the assembly of ancient genomes. A common issue in genome assembly concerns repeats, genomic sequences that appear in several locations of a genome. Handling repeats leads to a variant of the C1P, the C1P with multiplicity (mC1P), that can also be seen as the problem of covering edges of hypergraphs by linear and circular walks. In the present work, we describe variants of the mC1P that address specific issues of genome assembly, and polynomial time or fixed-parameter algorithms to solve them.

Abstract:A subgroup $A$ of a finite group $G$ is said to be a $CAP$-subgroup of $G$, if for any chief factor $H/K$ of $G$, either $A H= AK$ or $A\cap H = A \cap K$. Let $p$ be a prime, $S$ be a $p$-group and $\mathcal{F}$ be a saturated fusion system over $S$. Then $\mathcal{F}$ is said to be supersolvable, if there exists a series of $S$, namely $1 = S_0 \leq S_1 \leq \cdots \leq S_n = S$, such that $S_{i+1}/S_i$ is cyclic, and $S_i$ is strongly $\mathcal{F}$-closed for any $i=0,1,\cdots,n$. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of strong $p$-$CAP$-subgroups, and investigate the properties of finite groups under the assumption that some subgroups of $G$ are partial $CAP$-subgroups or strong $(p)$-$CAP$-subgroups, and obtain some criteria for a group $G$ to be $p$-supersoluble. Then, we investigate the characterizations for supersolvability of $\mathcal{F}_S (G)$ under the assumption that some subgroups of $G$ are partial $CAP$-subgroups or strong $(p)$-$CAP$-subgroups of $G$, and obtain some criteria for a fusion system $\mathcal{F}_S (G)$ to be $p$-supersolvable.
