Abstract:A domino covering of a board is saturated if no domino is redundant. We introduce the concept of a fragment tiling and show that a minimal fragment tiling always corresponds to a maximal saturated domino covering. The size of a minimal fragment tiling is the domination number of the board. We define a class of regular boards and show that for these boards the domination number gives the size of a minimal X-pentomino covering. Natural sequences that count maximal saturated domino coverings of square and rectangular boards are obtained. These include the new sequences A193764, A193765, A193766, A193767, and A193768 of OEIS.

Abstract:We help Alice play a certain "convergence game" against Bob and win the prize, which is a constructive solution to a problem by Erdős and Graham, posed in their 1980 book on open questions in combinatorial number theory. Namely, after several reductions using peculiar arithmetic identities, the game outcome shows that the set of points \[ \Big(\sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n}, \sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n+1}, \sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n+2}\Big), \] obtained as $A$ ranges over infinite sets of positive integers, has a non-empty interior. This generalizes a two-dimensional result by Erdős and Straus.

Abstract:We study the combinatorics of pseudoline arrangements in the real projective plane. Our focus lies on two classes of arrangements: simplicial arrangements and arrangements whose characteristic polynomials have only real roots. We derive inequalities involving the $t$-vectors of the arrangements in consideration. As application, we obtain some finiteness and classification results. Moreover, we are able to prove the Dirac Motzkin Conjecture for real pseudoline arrangements whose charateristic polynomials split over $\mathbb{R}$.

Bijections and congruences involving lattice paths and integer compositions

Abstract:We prove new bijections between different variants of Dyck paths and integer compositions, which give combinatorial explanations of their simple counting formula $4^{n-1}$. These give relations between different statistics, such as the number of crossings of the $x$-axis in classes of Dyck bridges or the distribution of peaks in classes of Dyck paths, and furthermore relate them with $k$- and $g$-compositions. These allow us to find and prove congruence results for Dyck paths and parity results for compositions. Our investigation uncovers unexpected connections to mock theta functions, Hardinian arrays, little Schr\"oder paths, Fibonacci numbers, and irreducible pairs of compositions, offering new insights into the structures of paths, partitions and compositions.

On line arrangements with odd multiplicities

Abstract:We give restrictions on the weak combinatorics of line arrangements with singular points of odd multiplicity using topological arguments on locally-flat spheres in 4-manifolds. As a corollary, we show that there is no line arrangement comprising 13 lines and with only triple points.

Abstract:Inversion sequences of length n are positive integer sequences e 1 e 2 ... e n such that 1 ≤ e i ≤ i for all 1 ≤ i ≤ n . These sequences are in bijection with the permutations of [ n ]. This paper focuses on the polyomino or barpgraph representation of the inversion sequences. More precisely, we study the distribution of lattice points on these polyominoes. We find the generating functions respect to the length, the number of interior vertices, corners, and vertices of a given degree. We also give simple explicit formulas for the total values of these parameters over all polyominoes of inversion sequences of length n . Throughout this work, we use symbolic computer algebra to facilitate the computations.

Abstract:Several articles deal with tilings with various colors and shapes. In this paper, we present a new type of tiling problem of a —board where the colors have a prescribed order of preference and the size of colored dominoes is bounded by . We show that the total number of tilings can be given as a linearly recurrent sequence of order ks , and at the same time by a higher order self-convolution of s -generalized Fibonacci sequences.

Abstract:We study the enumerative and analytic properties of some sequences constructed using tensor invariant theory. The octant sequences are constructed from the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ and the quadrant sequences from the special linear group $SL(3)$. In each case we show that the corresponding sequences are related by binomial transforms. The first three octant sequences and the first four quadrant sequences are listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). These sequences all have interpretations as enumerating two-dimensional lattice walks but for the octant sequences the boundary conditions are unconventional. These sequences are all P-recursive and we give the corresponding recurrence relations. In all cases the associated differential operators are of third order and have the remarkable property that they can be solved to give closed formulae for the ordinary generating functions in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that the octant sequences and the quadrant sequences are related by the branching rules for the inclusion of $SL(3)$ in $G_2$.

On the nonconnectedness of moduli spaces of arrangements, II: construction of nonarithmetic pairs

Abstract:Constructing lattice isomorphic line arrangements that are not lattice isotopic is a complex yet fundamental task. In this paper, we focus on such pairs but which are not Galois conjugated, referred to as nonarithmetic pairs. Splitting polygons have been introduced by the author to facilitate the construction of lattice isomorphic arrangements that are not lattice isotopic. Exploiting this structure, we develop two algorithms which produce nonarithmetic pairs: the first generates pairs over a number field, while the second yields pairs over the rationals. Moreover, explicit applications of these algorithms are presented, including one complex, one real, and one rational nonarithmetic pair.

Abstract:This paper delves into the combinatorial structures underlying snake graphs, focusing on their connections to domino tilings, lattice paths, and perfect matchings. By exploring the structure of snake graphs and their associated regions, we introduce triangular snake graphs (connected acyclic directed graphs) and provide a bijection between their routes (non-intersecting lattice paths), perfect matchings of their underlying snake graphs, and tilings, revealing significant relationships and identities. Furthermore, we study the algebraic implications of these combinatorial structures. We show how the number of perfect matchings in snake graphs can be expressed in terms of determinants of Hankel matrices or path matrices associated with Catalan, Fibonacci, and Pell numbers. This provides a novel perspective on the interplay between combinatorial objects and algebraic identities.

Abstract:The formula for the number of domino tilings due to Kasteleyn and Temperley-Fisher is strikingly similar to Eisenstein's formula for the Legendre symbol. We study the connection between these two concepts and prove a formula which expresses the Jacobi symbol in terms of domino tilings.

Abstract:A weaving knot is an alternating knot whose minimal diagram is a closed braid of a lattice-like pattern. In this paper, the warping degree of a braid diagram is defined, and upper bounds of the unknotting number and the region unknotting number for some families of weaving knots are given by diagrammatical and combinatorial examination of the warping degree of weaving knot diagrams.

Abstract:We study the enumeration of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds in two directions: (1) with one boundary defect, and (2) with maximally-many zeroes on the diagonal. In the first direction, we prove a symmetry property which states that the numbers of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of order $2n-1$ are equal when the boundary defect is at the $k$th position and the $(2n-k)$th position on the boundary, respectively. This symmetry property proves a special case of a recent conjecture by Behrend, Fischer, and Koutschan. In the second direction, a Pfaffian formula is obtained for the number of "nearly" off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds, where the entries of the Pfaffian satisfy a simple recurrence relation. The numbers of domino tilings mentioned in the above two directions do not seem to have a simple product formula, but we show that these numbers satisfy simple matrix equations in which the entries of the matrix are given by Delannoy numbers. The proof of these results involves the method of non-intersecting lattice paths and a modification of Stembridge's Pfaffian formula for families of non-intersecting lattice paths. Finally, we propose conjectures concerning the log-concavity and asymptotic behavior of the number of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds.

Abstract:We discuss a matrix of periodic holomorphic functions in the upper and lower half-plane which can be obtained from a factorization of an Andersen-Kashaev state integral of a knot complement with remarkable analytic and asymptotic properties that defines a ${\rm PSL}_2({\mathbb Z})$-cocycle on the space of matrix-valued piecewise analytic functions on the real numbers. We identify the corresponding cocycle with the one coming from the Kashaev invariant of a knot (and its matrix-valued extension) via the refined quantum modularity conjecture of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.06645" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.06645">arXiv:2111.06645</a>] and also relate the matrix-valued invariant with the 3D-index of Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov. The cocycle also has an analytic extendability property that leads to the notion of a matrix-valued holomorphic quantum modular form. This is a tale of several independent discoveries, both empirical and theoretical, all illustrated by the three simplest hyperbolic knots.

Abstract:The manuscript studies configurations of non-overlapping non-bonding dominoes on finite rectangular boards of unit squares characterized by row and column number. The non-bonding dominoes are defined here by the requirement that any domino on the board shares at most one point (one of its four corner points) with any other domino, but no edge. With the Transfer Matrix Method, rational generating functions are derived that solve the enumeration problem entirely, here evaluated for boards with up to six rows or columns.

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Ahead of Print. Traditionally, knot theorists have considered projections of knots where there are two strands meeting at every crossing. A triple crossing is a crossing where three strands meet at a single point, such that each strand bisects the crossing. In this paper we find a relationship between the triple crossing number and the double crossing braid index for unoriented links, namely [math]. This yields a new method for determining braid indices. We find an infinite family of knots that achieve equality, which allows us to determine both the double crossing braid index and the triple crossing number of these knots.
