Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Abstract:We develop a versatile framework which allows us to rigorously estimate the Hausdorff dimension of maximal conformal graph directed Markov systems in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n \geq 2$. Our method is based on piecewise linear approximations of the eigenfunctions of the Perron-Frobenius operator via a finite element framework for discretization and iterative mesh schemes. One key element in our approach is obtaining bounds for the derivatives of these eigenfunctions, which, besides being essential for the implementation of our method, are of independent interest.

Abstract:Let $\Phi = \{\phi_e\}_{e\in E}$ be a finitely irreducible conformal graph directed Markov system (CGDMS) with symbolic representation $E_A^{\infty}$ and limit set $J$. Under a mild condition on the system, we give a multifractal analysis of level sets of Birkhoff averages with respect to Hausdorff dimension for a large family of functions. We then apply these results to a few examples in the case of both $E$ finite and $E$ countably infinite.

Abstract:We prove a uniform spectral gap for complex transfer operators near the critical line associated to overlapping $C^2$ iterated function systems on the real line satisfying a Uniform Non-Integrability (UNI) condition. Our work extends that of Naud (2005) on spectral gaps for nonlinear Cantor sets to allow overlaps. The proof builds a new method to reduce the problem of the lack of Markov structure to average contraction of products of random Dolgopyat operators. This approach is inspired by a disintegration technique developed by Algom, the first author and Shmerkin in the study of normal numbers. As a consequence of the method of the second author and Stevens, our spectral gap result implies that the Fourier transform of any non-atomic self-conformal measure decays to zero at a polynomial rate for any $C^{2}$ iterated function system satisfying UNI. This latter result leads to Fractal Uncertainty Principles with arbitrary overlaps.

Abstract:We describe Gauss-type maps as geometric realizations of certain codes in the monoid of nonnegative matrices in the extended modular group. Each such code, together with an appropriate choice of unimodular intervals in , determines a dual pair of graph-directed iterated function systems, whose attractors contain intervals and constitute the domains of a dual pair of Gauss-type maps. Our framework covers many continued fraction algorithms (such as Farey fractions, Ceiling, Even and Odd, Nearest Integer, ) and provides explicit dual algorithms and characterizations of those quadratic irrationals having a purely periodic expansion.

Abstract:We first survey the current state of the art concerning the dynamical properties of multidimensional continued fraction algorithms defined dynamically as piecewise fractional maps and compare them with algorithms based on lattice reduction. We discuss their convergence properties and the quality of the rational approximation, and stress the interest for these algorithms to be obtained by iterating dynamical systems. We then focus on an algorithm based on the classical Jacobi--Perron algorithm involving the nearest integer part. We describe its Markov properties and we suggest a possible procedure for proving the existence of a finite ergodic invariant measure absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure.

Spectral theoretic characterisation of Markov chain convergence

Abstract:In this work, we characterise the statistics of Markov chains by constructing an associated sequence of periodic differential operators. Studying the density of states of these operators reveals the absolutely continuous invariant measure of the Markov chain. This approach also leads to a direct proof of convergence to the invariant measure, along with explicit convergence rates. We show how our method can be applied to a class of related Markov chains including the logistic map, the tent map and Chebyshev maps of arbitrary order.

Abstract:Let $\varphi_0$ be a smooth conservative diffeomorphism of a compact surface $S$ and let $\Lambda_0$ be a mixing horseshoe of $\varphi_0$. Given a smooth real function $f$ defined in $S$ and a small smooth conservative perturbation $\varphi$ of $\varphi_0$, let $L_{\varphi, f}$ and $M_{\varphi, f}$ be respectively the Lagrange and Markov spectra associated to the hyperbolic continuation $\Lambda(\varphi)$ of the horseshoe $\Lambda_0$ and $f$. We show that for generic choices of $\varphi$ and $f$, the Hausdorff dimension of the sets $L_{\varphi, f}\cap (-\infty, t)$ and $M_{\varphi, f}\cap (-\infty, t)$ are equal and determine a continuous function as $t\in \mathbb{R}$ varies; generalizing then the Cerqueira-Matheus-Moreira theorem to horseshoes with arbitrary Hausdorff dimension.

On the classical Lagrange and Markov spectra: new results on the local dimension and the geometry of the difference set

Abstract:Let $L$ and $M$ denote the classical Lagrange and Markov spectra, respectively. It is known that $L\subset M$ and that $M\setminus L\neq\varnothing$. Inspired by three questions asked by the third author in previous work investigating the fractal geometric properties of the Lagrange and Markov spectra, we investigate the function $d_{loc}(t)$ that gives the local Hausdorff dimension at a point $t$ of $L'$. Specifically, we construct several intervals (having non-trivial intersection with $L'$) on which $d_{loc}$ is non-decreasing. We also prove that the respective intersections of $M'$ and $M''$ with these intervals coincide. Furthermore, we completely characterize the local dimension of both spectra when restricted to those intervals. Finally, we demonstrate the largest known elements of the difference set $M\setminus L$ and describe two new maximal gaps of $M$ nearby.

Abstract:This work provides a necessary and sufficient condition for a symbolic dynamical system to admit a sequence of periodic approximations in the Hausdorff topology. The key result proved and applied here uses graphs that are called De Bruijn graphs, Rauzy graphs, or Anderson–Putnam complex, depending on the community. Combining this with a previous result, the present work justifies rigorously the accuracy and reliability of algorithmic methods used to compute numerically the spectra of a large class of self-adjoint operators. The so-called Hamiltonians describe the effective dynamic of a quantum particle in aperiodic media. No restrictions on the structure of these operators other than general regularity assumptions are imposed. In particular, nearest-neighbor correlation is not necessary. Examples for the Fibonacci and the Golay–Rudin–Shapiro sequences are explicitly provided illustrating this discussion. While the first sequence has been thoroughly studied by physicists and mathematicians alike, a shroud of mystery still surrounds the latter when it comes to spectral properties. In light of this, the present paper gives a new result here that might help uncovering a solution.

Abstract:Certain subsets of limit sets of geometrically finite Fuchsian groups with parabolic elements are considered. It is known that Jarn\'ık limit sets determine a "weak multifractal spectrum" of the Patterson measure in this situation. This paper will describe a natural generalisation of these sets, called strict Jarn\'ık limit sets, and show how these give rise to another weak multifractal spectrum. Number-theoretical interpretations of these results in terms of continued fractions will also be given.

Abstract:We study the multifractal properties of the uniform approximation exponent and asymptotic approximation exponent in continued fractions. As a corollary, we calculate the Hausdorff dimension of the uniform Diophantine set for a class of quadratic irrational numbers . These results contribute to the study of the uniform Diophantine approximation, and apply to investigating the multifractal properties of run-length function in continued fractions.

Abstract:The set B of geodesic rays avoiding a suitable obstacle in a complete negatively curved Riemannian manifold determines a spectrum S. While various properties of this spectrum are known, we define and study dimension functions on S in terms of the Hausdorff-dimension of suitable subsets of the set of bounded geodesic rays. We establish estimates on the Hausdorff-dimension of these subsets and thereby obtain non-trivial bounds for the dimension functions. Moreover we discuss the property of B being an absolute winning set, therefore satisfying a remarkable rigidity. Finally, we apply the obtained results to the dimension functions on the spectrum of complex numbers badly approximable by either an imaginary quadratic number field $Q(i \sqrt{d})$ or by quadratic irrational numbers over $Q(i \sqrt{d})$.

Abstract:We determine the Hausdorff dimension of sets of irrationals in $(0,1)$ whose partial quotients in semi-regular continued fractions obey certain restrictions and growth conditions. This result substantially generalizes that of the second author [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. {\bf 151} (2023), 3645--3653] and the solution of Hirst's conjecture [B.-W. Wang and J. Wu, Bull. London Math. Soc. {\bf 40} (2008), 18--22], both previously obtained for the regular continued fraction. To prove the result, we construct non-autonomous iterated function systems well-adapted to the given restrictions and growth conditions on partial quotients, estimate the associated pressure functions, and then apply Bowen's formula.

Abstract:Let $\{a_n(x)\}_{n\geq1}$ be the sequence of digits of $x\in(0,1)$ in infinite iterated function systems with polynomial decay of the derivative. We first study the multifractal spectrum of the convergence exponent defined by the sequence of the digits $\{a_n(x)\}_{n\geq1}$ and the weighted products of distinct digits with finite numbers respectively, and then calculate the Hausdorff dimensions of the intersection of sets defined by the convergence exponent of the weighted product of distinct digits with finite numbers and sets of points whose digits are non-decreasing in such iterated function systems.
