Abstract:The magnetic Laplacian (also called the line bundle Laplacian) on a connected weighted graph is a self-adjoint operator wherein the real-valued adjacency weights are replaced by unit complex-valued weights $\{\omega_{xy}\}_{xy\in E}$, satisfying the condition that $\omega_{xy}=\overline{\omega_{yx}}$ for every directed edge $xy$. When properly interpreted, these complex weights give rise to magnetic fluxes through cycles in the graph. In this paper we establish the spectrum of the magnetic Laplacian, as a set of real numbers with multiplicities, on the Sierpinski gasket graph ($SG$) where the magnetic fluxes equal $\alpha$ through the upright triangles, and $\beta$ through the downright triangles. This is achieved upon showing the spectral self-similarity of the magnetic Laplacian via a 3-parameter map $\mathcal{U}$ involving non-rational functions, which takes into account $\alpha$, $\beta$, and the spectral parameter $\lambda$. In doing so we provide a quantitative answer to a question of Bellissard [Renormalization Group Analysis and Quasicrystals (1992)] on the relationship between the dynamical spectrum and the actual magnetic spectrum. Our main theorems lead to two applications. In the case $\alpha=\beta$, we demonstrate the approximation of the magnetic spectrum by the filled Julia set of $\mathcal{U}$, the Sierpinski gasket counterpart to Hofstadter's butterfly. Meanwhile, in the case $\alpha,\beta\in \{0,\frac{1}{2}\}$, we can compute the determinant of the magnetic Laplacian determinant and the corresponding asymptotic complexity.

Spectrum in alternative topological algebras and a new look at old theorems

Abstract:In this paper, we consider real and complex algebras as well as algebras over general fields. In Section 2, we revisit and prove several results on (quadratic) algebras over general fields. In Section 3, we show how to develop the spectral theory in the context of complex (resp. real) one-sided alternative topological algebras. As an application of the existence of spectrum, we prove the existence of nontrivial hyperinvariant linear manifolds for nonscalar (resp. nonquadratic) continuous linear operators acting on complex (resp. real) Fréchet spaces. Along the way, spectral theory is used to prove several topological counterparts of the well-known theorems of Frobenius, Hurwitz, Gelfand-Mazur, and Zorn. This is done, for example, in the context of left (resp. right) alternative topological algebras whose duals separate their elements. In Section 4, we consider real and complex algebras in various topological settings and reconsider and prove several results. For instance, it is shown that given a $ 1 < k \in \mathbb{N}$, on any locally complex algebra, there exists a unique nonzero vector space norm, say, $\|.\|$, satisfying the identity $\|a^k\| = \|a\|^k$ on the algebra. In Section 5, among other things, we revisit and slightly strengthen the celebrated theorems of Frobenius, Zorn, Gelfand-Mazur, and Hurwitz, and also give slight extensions of their topological counterparts, e.g., theorems of Albert, Kaplansky, and Urbanik-Wright to name a few, in several settings.

On multiplicative spectral sequences for nerves and the free loop spaces

Abstract:We construct a multiplicative spectral sequence converging to the cohomology algebra of the diagonal complex of a bisimplicial set with coefficients in a field. The construction provides a spectral sequence converging to the cohomology algebra of the classifying space of a topological category. By applying the machinery to a Borel construction, we determine explicitly the mod $p$ cohomology algebra of the free loop space of the real projective space for each odd prime $p$. This is highlighted as an important computational example of such a spectral sequence. Moreover, we try to represent generators in the singular de Rham cohomology algebra of the diffeological free loop space of a non-simply connected manifold $M$ with differential forms on the universal cover of $M$ via Chen's iterated integral map.

Abstract:Arguably, the first bridge between vast, ancient, but disjoint domains of mathematical knowledge, - topology and number theory, - was built only during the last fifty years. This bridge is the theory of spectra in stable homotopy theory. This connection poses the challenge: discover new information in number theory using the independently-developed machinery of homotopy theory. In this combined research/survey paper we suggest to apply homotopy spectra to the problem of distribution of rational points upon algebraic manifolds.

On the slice spectral sequence for quotients of norms of Real bordism

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate equivariant quotients of the Real bordism spectrum's multiplicative norm $MU^{((C_{2^n}))}$ by permutation summands. These quotients are of interest because of their close relationship with higher real $K$-theories. We introduce new techniques for computing the equivariant homotopy groups of such quotients. As a new example, we examine the theories $BP^{((C_{2^n}))}\langle m,m\rangle$. These spectra serve as natural equivariant generalizations of connective integral Morava $K$-theories. We provide a complete computation of the $a_{\sigma}$-localized slice spectral sequence of $i^*_{C_{2^{n-1}}}BP^{((C_{2^n}))}\langle m,m\rangle$, where $\sigma$ is the real sign representation of $C_{2^{n-1}}$. To achieve this computation, we establish a correspondence between this localized slice spectral sequence and the $H\mathbb{F}_2$-based Adams spectral sequence in the category of $H\mathbb{F}_2 \wedge H\mathbb{F}_2$-modules. Furthermore, we provide a full computation of the $a_{\lambda}$-localized slice spectral sequence of the height-4 theory $BP^{((C_{4}))}\langle 2,2\rangle$. The $C_4$-slice spectral sequence can be entirely recovered from this computation.

Serendipitous decompositions of higher-dimensional continued fractions

Abstract:We prove a suite of dynamical results, including exactness of the transformation and piecewise-analyticity of the invariant measure, for a family of continued fraction systems, including specific examples over reals, complex numbers, quaternions, octonions, and in $R^3$. Our methods expand on the work of Nakada and Hensley, and in particular fill some gaps in Hensley's analysis of Hurwitz complex continued fractions. We further introduce a new ``serendipity'' condition for a continued fraction algorithm, which controls the long-term behavior of the boundary of the fundamental domain under iteration of the continued fraction map, and which is under reasonable conditions equivalent to the finite range property. We also show that the finite range condition is extremely delicate: perturbations of serendipitous systems by non-quadratic irrationals do not remain serendipitous, and experimental evidence suggests that serendipity may fail even for some rational perturbations.

Abstract:Let Ω ⊂ R be a compact measurable set of measure 1 and with null boundary measure. We show that if Ω is a spectral set, then it admits a rational spectrum. The proof relies on the periodicity of spectrums shown in [16], and adopts the technique in [28] for analyzing zeros of exponential sums as well as the technique in [16] that relates the spectrum to the tiling of | 1 ˆ Ω | 2 . The key technical ingredient we contribute that eventually leads to the result is the periodicity of values from an exponential sum on a certain subgroup of Z , which characterizes the torsion part of the spectrum. An immediate consequence of this result, together with periodicity and rationality results in [16,28], is the equivalence between the Fuglede conjecture in R and in Z n .

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth irreducible projective variety over a field $\mathbf{k}$ of dimension $d.$ Let $\tau: \mathbb{Q}_l\to \mathbb{C}$ be any field embedding. Let $f: X\to X$ be a surjective endomorphism. We show that for every $i=0,\dots,2d$, the spectral radius of $f^*$ on the numerical group $N^i(X)\otimes \mathbb{R}$ and on the $l$-adic cohomology group $H^{2i}(X_{\overline{\mathbf{k}}},\mathbb{Q}_l)\otimes \mathbb{C}$ are the same. As a consequence, if $f$ is $q$-polarized for some $q>1$, we show that the norm of every eigenvalue of $f^*$ on the $j$-th cohomology group is $q^{j/2}$ for all $j=0,\dots, 2d.$ We also get some apply applications for the counting of fixed points and its ``moving target" variant. Indeed we studied the more general actions of certain cohomological coorespondences and we get the above results as consequences in the endomorphism setting.

Abstract:The motivic version of the $c_1$-spherical cobordism spectrum is constructed. A connection of this spectrum with other motivic Thom spectra is established. Using this connection, we compute the $\mathbb{P}^1$-diagonal of the homotopy groups of the special linear algebraic cobordism $\pi_{2*,*}(\mathrm{MSL})$ over a local Dedekind domain $k$ with $1/2\in k$ after inverting the exponential characteristic of the residue field of $k$. We discuss the action of the motivic Hopf element $\eta$ on this ring, obtain a description of the localization away from $2$ and compute the $2$-primary torsion subgroup. The complete answer is given in terms of the special unitary cobordism ring. An important component of the computation is the construction of Pontryagin characteristic numbers with values in the Hermitian K-theory. We also construct Chern numbers in this setting, prove the motivic version of the Anderson-Brown-Peterson theorem and briefly discuss classes of Calabi-Yau varieties in the $\mathrm{SL}$-cobordism ring.

Abstract:We prove the unbounded denominators conjecture in the theory of noncongruence modular forms for finite index subgroups of SL_2(Z). Our result includes also Mason's generalization of the original conjecture to the setting of vector-valued modular forms, thereby supplying a new path to the congruence property in rational conformal field theory. The proof involves a new arithmetic holonomicity bound of a potential-theoretic flavor, together with Nevanlinna's second main theorem, the congruence subgroup property of SL_2(Z[1/p]), and a close description of the Fuchsian uniformization D(0,1)/\Gamma_N of the Riemann surface C \setminus \mu_N.

Abstract:In the study on the diagonality of an $n$-tuple $\alpha=(\alpha(j))_{j=1}^n$ of commuting self-adjoint operators modulo a given $n$-tuple $\Phi=(\mathcal{J}_1,\ldots,\mathcal{J}_n)$ of normed ideals in $B(H)$, Voiculescu introduced the notion of quasicentral modulus $k_{\Phi}(\alpha)$ and proved that $\alpha$ is diagonal modulo $(\mathcal{J}_1,\ldots,\mathcal{J}_n)$ if and only if $k_{\Phi}(\alpha)=0.$ We prove that the same assertion holds true when $B(H)$ is replaced with a $\sigma$-finite semifinite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$, and $\mathcal{J}_1,\ldots,\mathcal{J}_n$ are replaced with symmetric spaces $E_1(\mathcal{M}),\ldots,E_n(\mathcal{M})$ associated with $\mathcal{M}.$

Abstract:For differential operators of Calabi-Yau type, Candelas, de la Ossa and van Straten conjecture the appearance of $p$-adic zeta values in the matrix entries of their $p$-adic Frobenius structure expressed in the standard basis of solutions near a MUM-point. We prove that this phenomenon holds for simplicial and hyperoctahedral families of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in $n$ dimensions, in which case the Frobenius matrix entries are rational linear combinations of products of $\zeta_p(k)$ with $1 < k < n$.

On diagonal digraphs, Koszul algebras and triangulations of homology spheres

Abstract:The article is devoted to the study of diagonal digraphs, i.e. digraphs whose magnitude homology is concentrated on the diagonal. For a digraph $G$ and $\ell\geq 2,$ we describe a condition, denoted by $(\mathcal{V}_\ell)$, equivalent to vanishing of the second magnitude homology group ${\rm MH}_{2,k}(G,\mathbb{Z})$ for all $k>\ell.$ In particular, diagonal digraphs satisfy $(\mathcal{V}_2).$ As a corollary we obtain that the 2-dimensional CW-complex obtained from a diagonal undirected graph by attaching 2-cells to all squares and triangles of the graph is simply connected. We also give an interpretation of diagonality in terms of Koszul algebras: a digraph $G$ is diagonal if and only if the distance algebra $\sigma G$ is Koszul for any ground field; and if and only if $G$ satisfies $(\mathcal{V}_2)$ and the path cochain algebra $\Omega^\bullet(G)$ is Koszul for any ground field. To obtain a source of examples of digraphs, we study the extended Hasse diagram $\hat G_K$ of a pure simplicial complex $K$. For a triangulation $K$ of a topological manifold $M,$ we express the non-diagonal part of the magnitude homology of $\hat G_K$ via the homology of $M$. As a corollary we obtain that, if $K$ is a triangulation of a closed manifold $M$, then $\hat G_K$ is diagonal if and only if $M$ is a homology sphere.

A finiteness condition for complex continued fraction algorithms

Abstract:A continued fraction algorithm allows to represent numbers in a way that is particularly valuable if one wants to approximate irrational numbers by rationals. Some of these algorithms are simple in the sense that the possible representations can be characterized in an easy way. For instance, for the classical continued fraction algorithm each infinite string of positive integer digits (called partial quotients in this setting) can occur. For complex continued fraction algorithms this does not hold. However, for some algorithms an easy condition, the so-called finite range condition, characterizes the possible "digit strings". We show that this condition holds for complex $\boldsymbol{\alpha}$-Hurwitz algorithms with parameters $\boldsymbol{\alpha}\in\mathbb{Q}^2$. Our proofs are elementary, and our result opens new perspectives for the exploration of these algorithms.

Abstract:We show that quadratic and symmetric L-theory of the integers are related by Anderson duality and show that both spectra split integrally into the L-theory of the real numbers and a generalised Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum. As a consequence, we obtain a corresponding splitting of the space G/Top. Finally, we prove analogous results for the genuine L-spectra recently devised for the study of Grothendieck--Witt theory.

Abstract:Extending work of Saneblidze-Umble and others, we use diagonals for the associahedron and multiplihedron to define tensor products of A-infinity algebras, modules, algebra homomorphisms, and module morphisms, as well as to define a bimodule analogue of twisted complexes (type DD structures, in the language of bordered Heegaard Floer homology) and their one- and two-sided tensor products. We then give analogous definitions for 1-parameter deformations of A-infinity algebras; this involves another collection of complexes. These constructions are relevant to bordered Heegaard Floer homology.

Abstract:We study the magnetic Laplacian on the Lieb lattice, and prove Cantor spectrum for arbitrary irrational magnetic flux. We also provide a complete spectral analysis for the reduced one-dimensional Hamiltonian, proving Cantor spectra for all irrational frequencies, and sharp arithmetic phase transitions. Part of our analysis reveals a novel coexistence phenomenon of point spectrum and absolutely/singular continuous spectrum.
