Abstract:Stanley introduces polynomials which help evaluate symmetric group characters and conjectures that the coefficients of the polynomials are positive. Stanley later gives a conjectured combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the polynomials. Here, we prove the conjecture for the terms of highest degree.

Abstract:We define a new family of symmetric functions which are affine analogues of Stanley symmetric functions. We establish basic properties of these functions including symmetry, dominance and conjugation. We conjecture certain positivity properties in terms of a subfamily of symmetric functions called affine Schur functions. As applications, we show how affine Stanley symmetric functions generalise the (dual of the) $k$-Schur functions of Lapointe, Lascoux and Morse as well as the cylindric Schur functions of Postnikov. Conjecturally, affine Stanley symmetric functions should be related to the cohomology of the affine flag variety.

A Noncommutative Chromatic Symmetric Function

Abstract:Stanley associated with a graph G a symmetric function X_G which reduces to G's chromatic polynomial under a certain specialization of variables. He then proved various theorems generalizing results about the chromatic polynomial, as well as new ones that cannot be interpreted at that level. Unfortunately, X_G does not satisfy a Deletion-Contraction Law which makes it difficult to apply induction. We introduce a symmetric function in noncommuting variables which does have such a law and specializes to X_G when the variables are allowed to commute. This permits us to further generalize some of Stanley's theorems and prove them in a uniform and straightforward manner. Furthermore, we make some progress on the (3+1)-free Conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge.

Abstract:We introduce two new bases for polynomials that lift monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. By defining a new condition on pipe dreams, called quasi-Yamanouchi, we give a positive combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials into these new bases that parallels the expansion of Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. As a result, we obtain a refinement of the stable limits of Schubert polynomials to Stanley symmetric functions. We also give combinatorial rules for the positive structure constants of these bases that generalize the quasi-shuffle product and shuffle product, respectively. We use this to give a Littlewood--Richardson rule for expanding a product of Schubert polynomials into fundamental slide polynomials and to give formulas for products of Stanley symmetric functions in terms of Schubert structure constants.

Abstract:In the seminal work of Stanley, several conjectures were made on the structure of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for the multiplication of Jack symmetric functions. Motivated by recent results of Alexandersson and the present author, we postulate that a certain 'windowing' property holds for all such Jack L-R coefficients. This property provides a vast set of relations between these coefficients and allows for their direct computation in certain novel cases. We demonstrate compatibility between our windowing conjecture and the conjectures of Stanley, with the hope of illuminating the structures within.

Abstract:The Schur functions, a basis for the symmetric polynomials (Sym), encode the irreducible representations of the symmetric group, $\mathfrak{S}_n$, via the Frobenius characteristic map. In 1996, Krob and Thibon defined a quasisymmetric Frobenius map on the representations of $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$, mapping them to the quasisymmetric functions (QSym). Despite the obvious inclusion of Sym in QSym and the close relationship between $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$, there is no known direct link between these two Frobenius characteristic maps and the related representations. We explore three specific situations in which a deformation of an $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action results in a valid $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$ action and gives a quasisymmetric Frobenius characteristic that is equal to the symmetric Frobenius characteristic. We introduce the concept of quasisymmetric compatibility, which formalizes a link between the two maps, and we show it applies to all $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules.

Abstract:If we consider previously introduced extensions of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function $X_{G}(x_1, x_2, \ldots)$ for a graph $G$ to elements in the algebra $\textsf{QSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions and in the algebra $\textsf{NCSym}$ of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, this motivates our introduction of a lifting of $X_{G}$ to the dual of $\textsf{QSym}$, i.e., the algebra $\textsf{NSym}$ of noncommutative symmetric functions, as opposed to $\textsf{NCSym}$. For an unlabelled directed graph $D$, our extension of chromatic symmetric functions provides an element $\text{X}_{D}$ in $\textsf{NSym}$, in contrast to the analogue $Y_{G} \in \textsf{NCSym}$ of $X_{G}$ due to Gebhard and Sagan. Letting $G$ denote the undirected graph underlying $D$, our construction is such that the commutative image of $\text{X}_{D}$ is $ X_{G}$. This projection property is achieved by lifting Stanley's power sum expansion for chromatic symmetric functions, with the use of the $\Psi$-basis of $\textsf{NSym}$, so that the orderings of the entries of the indexing compositions are determined by the directed edges of $D$. We then construct generating sets for $\textsf{NSym}$ consisting of expressions of the form $\text{X}_{D}$, building on the work of Cho and van Willigenburg on chromatic generating sets for $\textsf{Sym}$.

Abstract:Stanley and Féray gave a formula for the irreducible character of the symmetric group related to a multi-rectangular Young diagram. This formula shows that the character is a polynomial in the multi-rectangularcoordinates and gives an explicit combinatorial interpretation for its coefficients in terms of counting certain decorated maps (i.e., graphs drawn on surfaces). In the current paper we concentrate on the coefficients of thetop-degree monomials in the Stanley character polynomial, which corresponds to counting certain decorated plane trees. We give an explicit bijection between such trees and minimal factorizations of a cycle.

Abstract:Working in univalent foundations, we investigate the symmetries of spheres, i.e., the types of the form $\mathbb{S}^n = \mathbb{S}^n$. The case of the circle has a slick answer: the symmetries of the circle form two copies of the circle. For higher-dimensional spheres, the type of symmetries has again two connected components, namely the components of the maps of degree plus or minus one. Each of the two components has $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ as fundamental group. For the latter result, we develop an EHP long exact sequence.

Abstract:Integrality properties of partial sums over irreducible representations, along columns of character tables of finite groups, were recently derived using combinatorial topological string theories (CTST). These CTST were based on Dijkgraaf-Witten theories of flat $G$-bundles for finite groups $G$ in two dimensions, denoted $G$-TQFTs. We define analogous combinatorial topological strings related to two dimensional TQFTs based on fusion coefficients of finite groups. These TQFTs are denoted as $R(G)$-TQFTs and allow analogous integrality results to be derived for partial row sums of characters over conjugacy classes along fixed rows. This relation between the $G$-TQFTs and $R(G)$-TQFTs defines a row-column duality for character tables, which provides a physical framework for exploring the mathematical analogies between rows and columns of character tables. These constructive proofs of integrality are complemented with the proof of similar and complementary results using the more traditional Galois theoretic framework for integrality properties of character tables. The partial row and column sums are used to define generalised partitions of the integer row and column sums, which are of interest in combinatorial representation theory.

A Combinatorial Perspective on the Noncommutative Symmetric Functions

Abstract:The noncommutative symmetric functions $\textbf{NSym}$ were first defined abstractly by Gelfand et al. in 1995 as the free associative algebra generated by noncommuting indeterminants $\{\boldsymbol{e}_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ that were taken as a noncommutative analogue of the elementary symmetric functions. The resulting space was thus a variation on the traditional symmetric functions $\Lambda$. Giving noncommutative analogues of generating function relations for other bases of $\Lambda$ allowed Gelfand et al. to define additional bases of $\textbf{NSym}$ and then determine change-of-basis formulas using quasideterminants. In this paper, we aim for a self-contained exposition that expresses these bases concretely as functions in infinitely many noncommuting variables and avoids quasideterminants. Additionally, we look at the noncommutative analogues of two different interpretations of change-of-basis in $\Lambda$: both as a product of a minimal number of matrices, mimicking Macdonald's exposition of $\Lambda$ in Symmetric Functions and Hall Polynomials, and as statistics on brick tabloids, as in work by Eğecioğlu and Remmel, 1990.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce doubly symmetric functions, arising from the equivalence of particular linear combinations of Schur functions and hook Schur functions. We study algebraic and combinatorial aspects of doubly symmetric functions, in particular as they form a subalgebra of the algebra of symmetric functions. This subalgebra is generated by the odd power sum symmetric functions. One consequence is that a Schur function itself is doubly symmetric if and only if it is the Schur function of a staircase shape.

Abstract:Let $X$ denote the `conifold smoothing', the symplectic Weinstein manifold which is the complement of a smooth conic in $T^*S^3$, or equivalently the plumbing of two copies of $T^*S^3$ along a Hopf link. Let $Y$ denote the `conifold resolution', by which we mean the complement of a smooth divisor in $\mathcal{O}(-1) \oplus \mathcal{O}(-1) \to \mathbb{P}^1$. We prove that the compactly supported symplectic mapping class group of $X$ splits off a copy of an infinite rank free group, in particular is infinitely generated; and we classify spherical objects in the bounded derived category $D(Y)$ (the three-dimensional `affine $A_1$-case'). Our results build on work of Chan-Pomerleano-Ueda and Toda, and both theorems make essential use of working on the `other side' of the mirror.
