Abstract:This article is dedicated to presenting and discussing various results, including several new findings, directly or indirectly related to Bolzano's theorem, famously known as the intermediate value theorem, and its multi- or infinite-dimensional versions. We aim to provide a unified approach to these issues, consistently relying on the concept of tangency. The paper seeks to justify that tangency, a geometric property, firmly supported by appropriate topological arguments, constitutes one of the central tools in nonlinear functional analysis. Our objective is to demonstrate that the legacy of Bolzano and his followers remains significant and vibrant, constituting one of the cornerstones of contemporary mathematics.

The fundamental theorem of calculus in differential rings

Abstract:In this paper, we study the consequences of the fundamental theorem of calculus from an algebraic point of view. For functions with singularities, this leads to a generalized notion of evaluation. We investigate properties of such integro-differential rings and discuss many examples. We also construct corresponding integro-differential operators and provide normal forms via rewrite rules. They are then used to derive several identities and properties in a purely algebraic way, generalizing well-known results from analysis. In identities like shuffle relations for nested integrals and the Taylor formula, additional terms are obtained that take singularities into account. Another focus lies on treating basics of linear ODEs in this framework of integro-differential operators. These operators can have matrix coefficients, which allow to treat systems of arbitrary size in a unified way. In the appendix, using tensor reduction systems, we give the technical details of normal forms and prove them for operators including other functionals besides evaluation.

Abstract:19th century real analysis received a major impetus from Cauchy's work. Cauchy mentions variable quantities, limits, and infinitesimals, but the meaning he attached to these terms is not identical to their modern meaning. Some Cauchy historians work in a conceptual scheme dominated by an assumption of a teleological nature of the evolution of real analysis toward a preordained outcome. Thus, Gilain and Siegmund-Schultze assume that references to limite in Cauchy's work necessarily imply that Cauchy was working with an Archi-medean continuum, whereas infinitesimals were merely a convenient figure of speech, for which Cauchy had in mind a complete justification in terms of Archimedean limits. However, there is another formalisation of Cauchy's procedures exploiting his limite, more consistent with Cauchy's ubiquitous use of infinitesimals, in terms of the standard part principle of modern infinitesimal analysis. We challenge a misconception according to which Cauchy was allegedly forced to teach infinitesimals at the Ecole Polytechnique. We show that the debate there concerned mainly the issue of rigor, a separate one from infinitesimals. A critique of Cauchy's approach by his contemporary de Prony sheds light on the meaning of rigor to Cauchy and his contemporaries. An attentive reading of Cauchy's work challenges received views on Cauchy's role in the history of analysis, and indicates that he was a pioneer of infinitesimal techniques as much as a harbinger of the Epsilontik.

Abstract:We study the existence of solutions to abstract equations of the form $0 = Au + F(u)$, $u\in K\subset E$, where A is an abstract differential operator acting in a Banach space $E$, $K$ is a closed convex set of constraints being invariant with respect to resolvents of A and perturbations are subject to different tangency condition. Such problems are closely related to the so-called Poicaré- Miranda theorem, being the multi-dimensional counterpart of the celebrated Bolzano intermediate value theorem. In fact our main results can and should be regarded as infinite-dimensional variants of Bolzano and Miranda-Poincaré theorems. Along with single-valued problems we deal with set-valued ones, yielding the existence of the so-called constrained equilibria of set-valued maps. The abstract results are applied to show existence of (strong) steady state solutions to some weakly coupled systems of drift reaction-diffusion equations or differential inclusions of this type. In particular we get the existence of strong solutions to the Dirichlet, Neumann and periodic boundary problems for elliptic partial differential inclusions under the presence of state constraints of different type. Certain aspects of the Bernstein theory for bvp for second order ODE are studied, too. No assumptions concerning structural coupling (monotonicity, cooperativity) are undertaken.

Complete Rank Theorem in Advanced Calculus and Frobenius Theorem in Banach Space

Abstract:The application of generalized inverses is usually neglected in pure mathematical research. However, it is very effective for this paper. We expand the famous matrix rank theorem due to R. Penrose to operators between Banach paces. Therefore a modern perturbation analysis of generalized inverses is built. Hereby, we find and prove a complete rank theorem in advanced calculus. So a complete answer to the rank theorem problem presented by M. S. Berger is given. Applying the co-final set and the perturbation analysis of generalized inverses we prove the Frobenius theorem in Banach space, in the proof of which the used vector field and flow theory are avoided. The co-final set is essential to the Frobenius theorem. When the co-final set is trivial, the theorem reduces to the differential equation with initial value in Banach space. Also, we discuss a non-trivial family of subspaces and give its smooth integral submanifold.

Abstract:In this paper, methods of second order and higher order reverse mathematics are applied to versions of a theorem of Banach that extends the Schroeder-Bernstein theorem. Some additional results address statements in higher order arithmetic formalizing the uncountability of the power set of the natural numbers. In general, the formalizations of higher order principles here have a Skolemized form asserting the existence of functionals that solve problems uniformly. This facilitates proofs of reversals in axiom systems with restricted choice.

Abstract:This is a survey article on an old topic in classical analysis. We present some new developments in asymptotics in the last fifty years. We start with the classical method of Darboux and its generalizations, including an uniformity treatment which has a direct application to the Heisenberg polynomials. We then present the development of an asymptotic theory for difference equations, which is a major advancement since the work of Birkhoff and Trjitzinsky in 1933. A new method was introduced into this field in the nineteen nineties, which is now known as the nonlinear steepest descent method or the Riemann-Hilbert approach. The advantage of this method is that it can be applied to orthogonal polynomials which do not satisfy any differential or difference equations neither do they have any integral representations. As an example, we mention the case of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the Freud weight. Finally, we show how the Wiener-Hopf technique can be used to derive asymptotic expansions for the solutions of an integral equation on a half line.

Abstract:Recently, Dixit et al. [24] established a very elegant generalization of Hardy's theorem concerning the infinitude of zeros that the Riemann zeta function possesses at its critical line. By introducing a general transformation formula for the theta function involving the Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind, we extend their result to a class of Dirichlet series satisfying Hecke's functional equation. In the process, we also find new generalizations of classical identities in Analytic number theory.

Abstract:We consider equations that formally resemble a matrix Riemann (or Hopf) equation in the framework of bidifferential calculus. With different choices of a first-order bidifferential calculus, we obtain a variety of equations, including a semi-discrete and a fully discrete version of the matrix Riemann equation. A corresponding universal solution-generating method then either yields a (continuous or discrete) Cole-Hopf transformation, or leaves us with the problem of solving Riemann equations (hence an application of the hodograph method). If the bidifferential calculus extends to second order, solutions of a system of `Riemann equations' are also solutions of an equation that arises, on the universal level of bidifferential calculus, as an integrability condition. Depending on the choice of bidifferential calculus, the latter can represent a number of prominent integrable equations, like self-dual Yang-Mills, as well as matrix versions of the two-dimensional Toda lattice, Hirota's bilinear difference equation, (2+1)-dimensional NLS, KP and Davey-Stewartson equations. For all of them, a recent (non-isospectral) binary Darboux transformation result in bidifferential calculus applies, which can be specialized to generate solutions of the associated `Riemann equations'. For the latter, we clarify the relation between these specialized binary Darboux transformations and the aforementioned solution-generating method. From (arbitrary size) matrix versions of the `Riemann equations' associated with an integrable equation, possessing a bidifferential calculus formulation, multi-soliton-type solutions of the latter can be generated. This includes `breaking' multi-soliton-type solutions of the self-dual Yang-Mills and the (2+1)-dimensional NLS equation, which are parametrized by solutions of Riemann equations.

Abstract:This survey revolves around the question how the roots of a monic polynomial (resp. the spectral decomposition of a linear operator), whose coefficients depend in a smooth way on parameters, depend on those parameters. The parameter dependence of the polynomials (resp. operators) ranges from real analytic over $C^\infty$ to differentiable of finite order with often drastically different regularity results for the roots (resp. eigenvalues and eigenvectors). Another interesting point is the difference between the perturbation theory of hyperbolic polynomials (where, by definition, all roots are real) and that of general complex polynomials. The subject, which started with Rellich's work in the 1930s, enjoyed sustained interest through time that intensified in the last two decades, bringing some definitive optimal results. Throughout we try to explain the main proof ideas; Rellich's theorem and Bronshtein's theorem on hyperbolic polynomials are presented with full proofs. The survey is written for readers interested in singularity theory but also for those who intend to apply the results in other fields.

Approximation theorems throughout Reverse Mathematics

Abstract:Reverse Mathematics (RM for short) is a program in the foundations of mathematics where the aim is to find the minimal axioms needed to prove a given theorem of ordinary mathematics. Generally, the minimal axioms are equivalent to the theorem at hand, assuming a weak logical system called the base theory. Moreover, many (most?) theorems are either provable in the base theory or equivalent to one of four logical systems, together called the Big Five. For instance, the Weierstrass approximation theorem, i.e. that a continuous function can be approximated uniformly by a sequence of polynomials, has been classified in RM as being equivalent to weak Koenig's lemma, the second Big Five system. In this paper, we study approximation theorems for discontinuous functions via Bernstein polynomials from the literature. We obtain (many) equivalences between the latter and weak Koenig's lemma. We also show that slight variations of these approximation theorems fall far outside of the Big Five but fit in the recently developed RM of new 'big' systems, namely the uncountability of R, the enumeration principle for countable sets, the pigeon-hole principle for measure, and the Baire category theorem. In conclusion, one equivalence in second-order RM, namely for the Weierstrass approximation theorem, gives rise to many equivalences in higher-order RM, and we hope the case study in this paper can serve as a kind of template.

Generalizations of noncommutative Noether's problem

Abstract:Noether's problem is classical and very important problem in algebra. It is an intrinsically interesting problem in invariant theory, but with far reaching applications in the sutdy of moduli spaces, PI-algebras, and the Inverse problem of Galois theory, among others. To obtain an noncommutative analogue of Noether's problem, one would need a significant skew field that shares a role similar to the field of ratioal functions. Given the importance of the Weyl fields due to Gelfand-Kirillov's Conjecture, in 2006 J. Alev and F. Dumas introduced what is nowdays called the noncommutative Noether's problem. Many papers in recent years \cite{FMO}, \cite{EFOS}, \cite{FS}, \cite{Tikaradze} have been dedicated to the subject. The aim of this article is to generalize the main result of \cite{FS} for more general versions of Noether's problem; and consider its analogue in prime characteristic.

Abstract:Let \mathbb{K} be an algebraically closed field, X a smooth projective variety over \mathbb{K} and f \colon X\rightarrow X a dominant regular morphism. Let N^{i}(X) be the group of algebraic cycles, of codimension i , modulo numerical equivalence. Let \chi (f) be the spectral radius of the pullback f^{*} \colon H^{*}(X,\mathbb{Q}_{l})\rightarrow H^{*}(X,\mathbb{Q}_{l}) on l -adic cohomology groups, and \lambda (f) the spectral radius of the pullback f^{*} \colon N^{*}(X)\rightarrow N^{*}(X) . We prove in this paper, by using consequences of Deligne's proof of Weil's Riemann hypothesis, that \chi (f)=\lambda (f) . This answers affirmatively a question posed by Esnault and Srinivas. Consequently, the algebraic entropy \log \chi (f) of an endomorphism is both a birational invariant and étale invariant. More general results are proven if either \mathbb{K}=\bar{\mathbb{F}}_{p} or the Standard Conjecture D holds (this applies specially to Abelian varieties). Among other results in the paper, we show that if some properties of dynamical degrees, known in the case \mathbb{K}=\mathbb{C} , hold in positive characteristics, then simple proofs of Weil's Riemann hypothesis follow. More generally, the analogy in positive characteristic of Serre's famous result on polarized endomorphisms of compact Kähler manifolds also follows.

On unsolvable equations of prime degree

Abstract:Kronecker observed that either all roots or only one root of a solvable irreducible equation of odd prime degree with integer coefficients are real. This gives a possibility to construct specific examples of equations not solvable by radicals. A relatively elementary proof without using the full power of Galois theory is due to Weber. We give a rather short proof of Kronecker's theorem with a slightly different argument from Weber's. Several modern presentations of Weber's proof contain inaccuracies, which can be traced back to an error in the original proof. We discuss this error and how it can be corrected.

Abstract:D. Margalit and S. Schleimer found examples of roots of the Dehn twist about a nonseparating curve in a closed orientable surface, that is, homeomorphisms whose nth power is isotopic to the Dehn twist. Our main theorem gives elementary number-theoretic conditions that describe the values of n for which an nth root exists, given the genus of the surface. Among its applications, we show that n must be odd, that the Margalit-Schleimer roots achieve the maximum value of n among the roots for a given genus, and that for a given odd n, nth roots exist for all genera greater than (n-2)(n-1)/2. We also describe all nth roots having n greater than or equal to the genus.
