Abstract:We generalize the classical Blaschke Rolling Theorem to convex domains in Riemannian manifolds of bounded sectional curvature and arbitrary dimension. Our results are sharp and, in this sharp form, are new even in the model spaces of constant curvature.

Abstract:Under the hypothesis of mean curvature flows of hypersurfaces, we prove that the limit of the smooth rescaling of the singularity is weakly convex. It is a generalization of the result due to G. Huisken and C. Sinestrari in [5]. These a-priori bounds are satisfied for mean convex hypersurfaces in locally symmetric Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature.

Abstract:We revisit the classical rolling ball theorem of Blaschke for convex surfaces with positive curvature and show that it is linked to another inclusion principle in the optimal mass transportation theory due to Trudinger and Wang. We also discuss an application to reflector antennae design problem.

Abstract:We prove that, on any sub-Riemannian manifold endowed with a positive smooth measure, the Bakry-Émery inequality for the corresponding sub-Laplacian implies the existence of enough Killing vector fields on the tangent cone to force the latter to be Euclidean at each point, yielding the failure of the curvature-dimension condition in full generality. Our approach does not apply to non-strictly-positive measures. In fact, we prove that the weighted Grushin plane does not satisfy any curvature-dimension condition, but, nevertheless, does admit an a.e. pointwise version of the Bakry-Émery inequality. As recently observed by Pan and Montgomery, one half of the weighted Grushin plane satisfies the RCD(0,N) condition, yielding a counterexample to gluing theorems in the RCD setting.

Abstract:Methods and algorithms that work with data on nonlinear manifolds are collectively summarized under the term `Riemannian computing'. In practice, curvature can be a key limiting factor for the performance of Riemannian computing methods. Yet, curvature can also be a powerful tool in the theoretical analysis of Riemannian algorithms. In this work, we investigate the sectional curvature of the Stiefel and Grassmann manifold. On the Grassmannian, tight curvature bounds are known since the late 1960ies. On the Stiefel manifold under the canonical metric, it was believed that the sectional curvature does not exceed 5/4. Under the Euclidean metric, the maximum was conjectured to be at 1. For both manifolds, the sectional curvature is given by the Frobenius norm of certain structured commutator brackets of skew-symmetric matrices. We provide refined inequalities for such terms and pay special attention to the maximizers of the curvature bounds. In this way, we prove for the Stiefel manifold that the global bounds of 5/4 (canonical metric) and 1 (Euclidean metric) hold indeed. With this addition, a complete account of the curvature bounds in all admissible dimensions is obtained. We observe that `high curvature means low-rank', more precisely, for the Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds under the canonical metric, the global curvature maximum is attained at tangent plane sections that are spanned by rank-two matrices, while the extreme curvature cases of the Euclidean Stiefel manifold occur for rank-one matrices. Numerical examples are included for illustration purposes.

Abstract:We prove that any complete Riemannian manifold with negative part of the Ricci curvature in a suitable Dynkin class is bi-Lipschitz equivalent to a finite-dimensional $\mathrm{RCD}$ space, by building upon the transformation rule of the Bakry-Émery condition under time change. We apply this result to show that our previous results on the limits of closed Riemannian manifolds satisfying a uniform Kato bound carry over to limits of complete manifolds. We also obtain a weak version of the Bishop-Gromov monotonicity formula for manifolds satisfying a strong Kato bound.

Gap Theorem on Riemannian manifolds using Ricci flow

Abstract:In this work, we use the Ricci flow approach to study the gap phenomenon of Riemannian manifolds with non-negative curvature and sub-critical scaling invariant curvature decay. The first main result is a quantitative Ricci flow existence theory without non-collapsing assumption. We use it to show that complete non-compact manifolds with non-negative complex sectional curvature and sufficiently small average curvature decay are necessarily flat. The second main result concerns three-manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature of quadratic decay. By combining our newly established curvature estimate and method in Kähler geometry, we show that if the curvature decays slightly faster even in average sense, the manifold must be flat. This strengthens a result of Reiris. In the compact case, we use the Ricci flow regularization to generalize the celebrated Gromov-Ruh Theorem in this direction.

Abstract:We generalize Grünbaum's classical inequality in convex geometry to curved spaces with nonnegative Ricci curvature, precisely, to $\mathrm{RCD}(0,N)$-spaces with $N \in (1,\infty)$ as well as weighted Riemannian manifolds of $\mathrm{Ric}_N \ge 0$ for $N \in (-\infty,-1) \cup \{\infty\}$. Our formulation makes use of the isometric splitting theorem; given a convex set $\Omega$ and the Busemann function associated with any straight line, the volume of the intersection of $\Omega$ and any sublevel set of the Busemann function that contains a barycenter of $\Omega$ is bounded from below in terms of $N$. We also extend this inequality beyond uniform distributions on convex sets. Moreover, we establish some rigidity results by using the localization method, and the stability problem is also studied.

Abstract:A closed connected oriented Riemannian manifold $N$ with non-vanishing Euler characteristic, non-negative curvature operator and $0<2\text{Ric}_N<\text{scal}_N$ is area-rigid in the sense that any area non-increasing spin map $f\colon M\to N$ from a closed connected oriented Riemannian manifold $M$ with non-vanishing $\hat{A}$-degree and $\text{scal}_M\geq \text{scal}_N\mathop{\circ}\nolimits f$ is a Riemannian submersion. This is due to Goette and Semmelmann and generalizes a result by Llarull. In this article, we show area-rigidity for not necessarily orientable manifolds with respect to a larger class of maps $f\colon M\to N$ by replacing the topological condition on the $\hat{A}$-degree by a less restrictive condition involving the so-called higher mapping degree. This includes fiber bundles over even dimensional spheres with enlargeable fibers, e.g. $pr_1\colon S^{2n}\times T^k \to S^{2n}$. We develop a technique to extract from a non-vanishing higher index a geometrically useful family of almost $\mathcal{D}$-harmonic sections. This also leads to a new proof of the fact that any closed connected spin manifold with non-negative scalar curvature and non-trivial Rosenberg index is Ricci flat.

Scalar curvature comparison and rigidity of $3$-dimensional weakly convex domains

Abstract:For a compact Riemannian $3$-manifold $(M^{3}, g)$ with mean convex boundary which is diffeomorphic to a weakly convex compact domain in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$, we prove that if scalar curvature is nonnegative and the scaled mean curvature comparison $H^{2}g \ge H_{0}^{2} g_{Eucl}$ holds then $(M,g)$ is flat. Our result is a smooth analog of Gromov's dihedral rigidity conjecture and an effective version of extremality results on weakly convex balls in $\mathbb R^3$. More generally, we prove the comparison and rigidity theorem for several classes of manifold with corners. Our proof uses capillary minimal surfaces with prescribed contact angle together with the construction of foliation with nonnegative mean curvature and with prescribed contact angles.

Complete Kähler manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature

Abstract:We consider complete Kähler manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. The main results are: 1. When the manifold has nonnegative bisectional curvature, we show that $\lim\limits_{r\to\infty}\frac{r^{2}}{vol(B(p, r))}\int_{B(p, r)}S$ exists. In other words, it depends only on the manifold. This solves a question of Ni. Also, we establish estimates among volume growth ratio, integral of scalar curvature, and the degree of polynomial growth holomorphic functions. The new point is that the estimates are sharp for any prescribed volume growth rate. 2. We discover a strong rigidity for complete Ricci flat Kähler metrics. Let $M^n (n\geq 2)$ be a complete Kähler manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth. Assume either the curvature has quadratic decay, or the Kähler metric is $dd^c$-exact with quadratic decay of scalar curvature. If one tangent cone at infinity is Ricci flat, then $M$ is Ricci flat. In particular, the tangent cone is unique. In other words, we can test Ricci flatness of the manifold by checking one single tangent cone. This seems unexpected, since apriori, there is no equation on $M$ and the Bishop-Gromov volume comparison is not sharp on Ricci flat (nonflat) manifolds. Such result is in sharp contrast to the Riemannian setting: Colding and Naber showed that tangent cones are quite flexible when $Ric\geq 0$ and $|Rm|r^2<C$. This reveals subtle differences between Riemannian case and Kähler case. The result contains lots of examples, such as all noncompact Ricci flat Kähler surfaces of Euclidean volume growth (hyper-Kähler ALE 4-manifolds classified by Kronheimer), higher dimensional examples of Tian-Yau type, as well as an example with irregular cross section. It also covers Ricci flat Kähler metrics of Euclidean volume growth on Stein manifolds with $b_2 = 0$(e.g., $\mathbb{C}^n$).

Reverse isoperimetric properties of thick $λ$-sausages in the hyperbolic plane and Blaschke's rolling theorem

Abstract:In this paper we address the reverse isoperimetric inequality for convex bodies with uniform curvature constraints in the hyperbolic plane $\mathbb{H}^2$. We prove that thethick $\lambda$-sausage body, that is, the convex domain bounded by two equal circular arcs of curvature $\lambda$ and two equal arcs of hypercircle of curvature $1 / \lambda$, is the unique minimizer of area among all bodies $K \subset \mathbb{H}^2$ with a given length and with curvature of $\partial K$ satisfying $1 / \lambda \leq \kappa \leq \lambda$ (in a weak sense). We call this class of bodies thick $\lambda$-concave bodies, in analogy to the Euclidean case where a body is $\lambda$-concave if $0 \leq \kappa \leq \lambda$. The main difficulty in the hyperbolic setting is that the inner parallel bodies of a convex body are not necessarily convex. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce an extra assumption of thickness $\kappa \geq 1/\lambda$. In addition, we prove the Blaschke's rolling theorem for $\lambda$-concave bodies under the thickness assumption. That is, we prove that a ball of curvature $\lambda$ can roll freely inside a thick $\lambda$-concave body. In striking contrast to the Euclidean setting, Blaschke's rolling theorem for $\lambda$-concave domains in $\mathbb{H}^2$ does not hold in general, and thus has not been studied in literature before. We address this gap, and show that the thickness assumption is necessary and sufficient for such a theorem to hold.

Scaling of the elastic energy of small balls for maps between manifolds with different curvature tensors

Abstract:Motivated by experiments and formal asymptotic expansions in the physics literature, Maor and Shachar (J. Elasticity 134 (2019), 149-173) studied the behaviour of a model elastic energy of maps between manifolds with incompatible metrics. For thin objects they analysed the scaling of the minimal elastic energy as a function of the thickness. In particular they showed that for maps from a ball of radius h in an oriented Riemannian manifold to Euclidean space, the infimum of a model elastic energy per unit volume scales like the fourth power of h and after rescaling one gets convergence to a quadratic expression in the curvature tensor R(p), where p denotes the centre of the ball. In this paper we show the same result for general compact oriented Riemannian targets with R(p) replaced by a suitable difference of the curvature tensors in the target and the domain, thus answering Open Question 1 in the paper by Maor and Shachar. The result extends noncompact targets provided they satisfy a uniform regularity condition. A key idea in the proof is to use Lipschitz approximations to define a suitable notion of convergence.

Abstract:In this work, we extend the existence theory of non-collapsed Ricci flows from point-wise curvature lower bound to Kato-type curvature lower bound. As an application, we prove that any compact three-dimensional non-collapsed strong Kato limit space is homeomorphic to a smooth manifold. Moreover, similar result also holds in higher dimension under stronger curvature condition. We also use the Ricci flow smoothing to study stability problem in scalar curvature geometry.

Abstract: We generalize the splitting theorem of Cai-Galloway for complete Riemannian manifolds with $\Ric\geq-(n-1)$ admitting a family of compact hypersurfaces tending to infinity with mean curvatures tending to $n-1$ sufficiently fast to the setting of smooth metric measure spaces. This result complements and provides a new perspective on the splitting theorems recently proven by Munteanu-Wang and Su-Zhang. We show that the mean curvature assumption in our result is sharp, which also provides an example showing that the assumption $R\geq-(n-1)$ in the Munteanu-Wang splitting theorem for expanding gradient Ricci solitons cannot be relaxed to $R>-n$. We also use our result to study a certain class of conformally compact quasi-Einstein metrics, giving, as generalizations of respective results of Cai-Galloway and Lee, necessary conditions for the boundary to be connected and for the bottom of the spectrum of the weighted Laplacian to be maximal.
Ricci curvature bounds and rigidity for non-smooth Riemannian and semi-Riemannian metrics

Abstract:We study rigidity problems for Riemannian and semi-Riemannian manifolds with metrics of low regularity. Specifically, we prove a version of the Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem \cite{CheegerGromoll72splitting} for Riemannian metrics and the flatness criterion for semi-Riemannian metrics of regularity $C^1$. With our proof of the splitting theorem, we are able to obtain an isometry of higher regularity than the Lipschitz regularity guaranteed by the $\mathsf{RCD}$-splitting theorem \cite{gigli2013splitting, gigli2014splitoverview}. Along the way, we establish a Bochner-Weitzenböck identity which permits both the non-smoothness of the metric and of the vector fields, complementing a recent similar result in \cite{mondino2024equivalence}. The last section of the article is dedicated to the discussion of various notions of Sobolev spaces in low regularity, as well as an alternative proof of the equivalence (see \cite{mondino2024equivalence}) between distributional Ricci curvature bounds and $\mathsf{RCD}$-type bounds, using in part the stability of the variable $\mathsf{CD}$-condition under suitable limits \cite{ketterer2017variableCD}.

Abstract:We study spectral properties and geometric functional inequalities on Riemannian manifolds of dimension $\ge3$ with (finite or countably many) conical singularities $\{z_i\}_{i\in\mathfrak I}$ in the neighborhood of which the largest lower bound for the Ricci curvature is \begin{equation}\label{d2} k(x)\simeq K_i-\frac{s_i}{d^2(z_i,x)}. \end{equation} Thus none of the existing Bakry-Émery inequalities or curvature-dimension conditions apply. In particular, $k$ does not belong to the Kato (or (extended Kato) class, and $(M,g)$ is not tamed. Manifolds with such a singular Ricci bound appear quite naturally., e.g. as cones over spheres of radius $>1$ For such manifolds with conical singularities we will prove * a version of the Bakry-Émery inequality * a novel Hardy inequality * a spectral gap estimate.

Abstract:We obtain sharp quantitative Laplacian upper and lower estimates under no assumption on curvatures. As a result, we derive quantitative Laplacian, area and volume comparison theorems for tubes in Riemannian and Kähler manifolds under weak integral curvature assumptions. We also give some applications, such as a general Bonnet-Myers theorem and Cheng's eigenvalue estimate under weak integral curvature assumptions.

New Sphere Theorems under Curvature Operator of the Second Kind

Abstract:We investigate Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g)$ whose curvature operator of the second kind $\mathring{R}$ satisfies the condition \begin{equation*} \alpha^{-1} (\lambda_1 +\cdots +\lambda_{\alpha}) > - \theta \bar{\lambda}, \end{equation*} where $\lambda_1 \leq \cdots \leq \lambda_{(n-1)(n+2)/2}$ are the eigenvalues of $\mathring{R}$, $\bar{\lambda}$ is their average, and $\theta > -1$. Under such conditions with optimal $\theta$ depending on $n$ and $\alpha$, we prove two differentiable sphere theorems in dimensions three and four, a homological sphere theorem in higher dimensions, and a curvature characterization of Kähler space forms. These results generalize recent works corresponding to $\theta =0$ of Cao-Gursky-Tran, Nienhaus-Petersen-Wink, and the author. Moreover, examples are provided to demonstrate the sharpness of all results.
