Abstract:We prove that, on any sub-Riemannian manifold endowed with a positive smooth measure, the Bakry-Émery inequality for the corresponding sub-Laplacian implies the existence of enough Killing vector fields on the tangent cone to force the latter to be Euclidean at each point, yielding the failure of the curvature-dimension condition in full generality. Our approach does not apply to non-strictly-positive measures. In fact, we prove that the weighted Grushin plane does not satisfy any curvature-dimension condition, but, nevertheless, does admit an a.e. pointwise version of the Bakry-Émery inequality. As recently observed by Pan and Montgomery, one half of the weighted Grushin plane satisfies the RCD(0,N) condition, yielding a counterexample to gluing theorems in the RCD setting.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is whether the lower curvature bound conditions in the sense of Lott - Sturm - Villani or Bakry - Émery hold on sub - Riemannian manifolds with positive smooth measures. Specifically, the authors aim to prove that in general, sub - Riemannian structures do not satisfy any Curvature - Dimension Conditions (CD conditions), even if these manifolds are equipped with positive smooth measures. The background of this problem is that although significant progress has been made in the extended research on the concept of "lower Riemannian curvature bound" in the past two decades, these studies have mainly focused on non - Riemannian structures and general metric measure spaces. For the class of sub - Riemannian manifolds, which are smooth structures, the existing methods and theories cannot fully cover their characteristics, especially regarding the verification of curvature - dimension conditions.
### Main Objectives
The main objective of the paper is to fill the gaps in existing research, that is, to prove that (possibly rank - varying) sub - Riemannian manifolds do not satisfy any lower curvature bound conditions in the sense of Lott - Sturm - Villani or Bakry - Émery when equipped with positive smooth measures. Here, a positive smooth measure refers to a Radon measure whose density relative to the Lebesgue measure in local coordinate systems is a strictly positive smooth function.
### Specific Contributions
1. **Failure of the Bakry - Émery Inequality**:
- The authors define the weakest curvature - dimension condition - the Bakry - Émery inequality \( \text{BE}(K, \infty) \), and prove that if a sub - Riemannian manifold supports this inequality, then the manifold is actually a Riemannian manifold.
- Specifically, if a complete sub - Riemannian manifold \((M, d)\) is equipped with a positive smooth measure \( m \) and satisfies the \( \text{BE}(K, \infty) \) inequality, then at each point \( x\in M \), the rank of the distribution \( D_x \) is equal to the dimension of the manifold, thus making \((M, d)\) a Riemannian manifold.
2. **Existence of Killing Vector Fields**:
- By analyzing the tangent cones of sub - Riemannian manifolds, the authors prove that if a sub - Riemannian manifold satisfies the \( \text{BE}(K, \infty) \) inequality, then there exists a vector space \( i\subset g_1 \) in the nilpotent approximation at each point such that \( g_1 = i\oplus h_1 \), and each \( Y\in i \) is a Killing vector field.
- This result further shows that if a Carnot group contains sufficient horizontal symmetries, then the group must be commutative.
3. **Infinitesimal Hilbertian Property**:
- The authors prove the infinitesimal Hilbertian property of sub - Riemannian structures and use this property to prove that sub - Riemannian manifolds are actually Riemannian manifolds when they satisfy the \( \text{CD}(K, \infty) \) condition.
- Specifically, if a complete sub - Riemannian manifold \((M, d)\) is equipped with a positive smooth measure \( m \) and satisfies the \( \text{CD}(K, \infty) \) condition, then \((M, d)\) is a Riemannian manifold.
### Conclusions
Through the above analysis, the authors prove that on sub - Riemannian manifolds, even when equipped with positive smooth measures, no curvature - dimension conditions are satisfied. This result not only fills the gaps in existing research but also provides new perspectives and tools for further research in sub - Riemannian geometry.
