Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials have attracted great attention in solving the problems in the waste heat field, while low figure of merit and poor material stability drastically limit their practical applications. In this work, a two-dimensional (2D) Sc2Si2Te6 monolayer was systematically explored as a promising TE material via ab initio methods. The results reveal that the Sc2Si2Te6 monolayer possesses an indirect band gap with a rhombohedral crystal phase and exhibits excellent dynamic stability. The lower electronic/lattice thermal conductivity and higher electron carrier mobility result in good n-type power factor parameters between 6.24 × 1010 and 1.5 × 1011 W m-1 s-1 K-2 from 300 to 700 K. Such combined merits of low thermal conductivity and high power factor parameters endow the Sc2Si2Te6 monolayer with superior thermoelectric properties with figure of merit (ZT) values of 1.41 and 3.81 at 300 K and 700 K, respectively. This study presented here can shed light on the future design of various 2D materials for thermoelectric applications.
Use of similatity criteria for evaluating the thermoelectric figure of merit of superlattices

Abstract:In this paper, general relationships that allow evaluating the figure of merit of both two-dimensional superlattices and three-dimensional crystals with a quadratic and isotropic energy spectrum of free charge carriers are derived. It is shown that with the same values of the so-called dimensionless temperature and scattering coefficient, the figure of merit of superlattices is always lower than that of three-dimensional crystals. The figure of merit of superlattices can become higher that that of three-dimensional crystals if the dimensionless temperature of free charge carrier gas and (or) scattering coefficient in them is considerably higher than in three-dimensional crystals.

Abstract:We have calculated the thermoelectric figure of merit of a superlattice with the temperature gradient and the electric field applied parallel to the interfaces. Including the heat flow between the barriers and the wells, we have derived the temperature distribution in the sample, from which the expressions of the resultant thermal conductivity and hence the figure of merit are obtained. Our numerical result provides relevant information for achieving a high figure of merit.
Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in Three-Dimensional Superlattice of Topological Insulator Thin Films

Abstract:We show that certain three-dimensional (3D) superlattice nanostructure based on Bi2Te3 topological insulator thin films has better thermoelectric performance than two-dimensional (2D) thin films. The 3D superlattice shows a predicted peak value of ZT of approximately 6 for gapped surface states at room temperature and retains a high figure of merit ZT of approximately 2.5 for gapless surface states. In contrast, 2D thin films with gapless surface states show no advantage over bulk Bi2Te3. The enhancement of the thermoelectric performance originates from a combination of the reduction of lattice thermal conductivity by phonon-interface scattering, the high mobility of the topologically protected surface states, the enhancement of Seebeck coefficient, and the reduction of electron thermal conductivity by energy filtering. Our study shows that the nanostructure design of topological insulators provides a possible new way of ZT enhancement.
Thermoelectric figure of merit enhancement in dissipative superlattice structures

Abstract:Utilizing the non-coherent quantum transport formalism, we investigate thermoelectric performance across dissipative superlattice configurations in the linear regime of operation. Using the {\it{dissipative}} non-equilibrium Green's function formalism coupled self-consistently with the Poisson's equation, we report an enhanced figure of merit $zT$ in the multi-barrier device designs. The proposed enhancement, we show, is a result of a drastic reduction in the electronic thermal conductance triggered via non-coherent transport. We show that a maximum $zT$ value of 18 can be achieved via the inclusion of non-coherent elastic scattering processes. There is also a reasonable enhancement in the Seebeck coefficient, with a maximum of $1000~\mu V/K$, which we attribute to an enhancement in electronic filtering arising from the non-coherent transport. Distinctly the thermal conduction is drastically reduced as the length of the superlattice scales up, although the power factor shows an overall degradation. While the presence of interfaces is known to kill phonon thermal conduction, our analysis shows that non-coherent processes in superlattice structures can effectively kill electronic thermal conduction also. We believe that the analysis presented here could set the stage to understand better the interplay between non-coherent scattering and coherent quantum processes in the electronic engineering of heterostructure thermoelectric devices.

Superlattice design for optimal thermoelectric generator performance

Abstract:We consider the design of an optimal superlattice thermoelectric generator via the energy bandpass filter approach. Various configurations of superlattice structures are explored to obtain a bandpass transmission spectrum that approaches the ideal ``boxcar'' form, which is now well known to manifest the largest efficiency at a given output power. Using the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism coupled self-consistently with the Poisson's equation, we identify such an ideal structure and also demonstrate that it is almost immune to the deleterious effect of self-consistent charging and device variability. Analyzing various superlattice designs, we conclude that superlattices with a Gaussian distribution of the barrier thickness offers the best thermoelectric efficiency at maximum power. It is observed that the best operating regime of this device design provides a maximum power in the range of 0.32-0.46 $MW/m^2$ at efficiencies between 54\%-43\% of Carnot efficiency. We also analyze our device designs with the conventional figure of merit approach to counter support the results so obtained. We note a high $zT_{el}=6$ value in the case of Gaussian distribution of the barrier thickness. With the existing advanced thin-film growth technology, the suggested superlattice structures can be achieved, and such optimized thermoelectric performances can be realized.

Abstract:Improving the dimensionless figure of merit (zT) is the everlasting goal for thermoelectrics. With the discovery of super-thermoelectric materials, which exhibit much higher zTs (arbitrarily say, zT > 5) than that of the traditional materials, it is possible to dramatically alter the landscape of the thermoelectric applications. Identifying super-thermoelectric materials is extremely challenging based on the current understanding of electron and phonon transport. It is interesting to wonder if it is possible to predict how the super-thermoelectric material might look like before it has been discovered. Herein, band modeling on the thermoelectric properties is conducted. It is concluded that super-thermoelectric materials should have a much lower optimal carrier concentration than the “golden carrier concentration” (in the range between 1019 and 1020 cm−3). In addition, the super-thermoelectric materials should also have a much larger optimal Seebeck coefficient than that of the existing materials (∼200 μV K−1). Based on these predictions, potential issues i.e., on the development of super-thermoelectric materials are discussed. Finally, predictions on the super-thermoelectrics beyond the band modeling are also briefly discussed.

Designing graphene/hexagonal boron nitride superlattice monolayer with high thermoelectric performance

Abstract:We design a hybrid graphene/hexagonal boron nitride superlattice monolayer and investigate its thermoelectric properties using density functional theory and Boltzmann transport equations with the relaxation time accurately treated by electron-phonon coupling calculations. Compared with that of pristine graphene, the lattice thermal conductivity of the superlattice structure is more than two orders of magnitude lower due to the enhanced three-phonon scattering process originated from the mixed-bond characteristics. Besides, the coexistence of light and heavy bands around the Fermi level leads to an ultrahigh power factor along the zigzag direction, where the highest ZT value of ~2.5 can be achieved for the n-type system at 1100 K. Moreover, it is noted that the carrier transport near the valance band minimum is almost entirely contributed by the graphene part of the superlattice. As a consequence, the thermoelectric performance of p-type system can be enhanced to be comparable with that of n-type one by appropriate substitution of nitrogen atom with phosphorus, which can suppress the lattice thermal conductivity but nearly have no influence on the hole transport.

Abstract:By using a combination of the first-principles density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green's function for electron and phonon transport, we investigate the thermoelectric properties of silicon-germanium superlattice nanowires (NWs). Our results show that introducing superlattice structures always increases thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, which depends on the periodic length of the superlattice NWs. For n-type superlattice NWs, the achievable maximum ZT is 4.7, which is 5-fold increase as compared to the equivalent pristine silicon NWs. For p-type wires, the achieved maximum ZT is 2.74, which is 4.6-fold increase as compared to the pristine silicon NWs.

Abstract:Superatomic materials are newly emerging candidates for high-performance thermoelectric (TE) devices due to their intrinsic ultralow thermal conductivities. However, the low TE power factor becomes a huge obstacle to reaching the required dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) values for practical applications. Here, motivated by the recently synthesized superatomic Re6Se8I2 monolayer [He et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 144, 74 (2022)], we study its superior TE properties by using density functional theory combined with phonon Boltzmann transport theory and deep potential molecular dynamics. We show that the large mass and anharmonic Re-I bonds introduce strong phonon scattering and result in a low lattice thermal conductivity of 1.20 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K, while the strong and harmonic Re-Se network ensures a high TE power factor of 4344 mu W m-1 K-2 in the b direction for n-type doping. This is an order of magnitude higher than those of other cluster-based materials. Owing to the low thermal conductivity and high TE power factor, Re6Se8I2 exhibits higher ZT values of 1.20 (500 K) and 1.43 (900 K) with n-type doping along the b direction compared with other cluster-based TE materials reported so far.

Abstract:By first-principles methods combined with Boltzmann transport theory, we perform a systematic investigation of the thermoelectric properties of RbGeI3/CsSnI3 superlattices. RbGeI3/CsSnI3 superlattices construct a quantum well with valence and conduction states near the Fermi level located in CsSnI3 layers, which yields a periodic repetition of two-dimensional transport channels. The quantum-confinement effects and the ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of the superlattices greatly enhance the in-plane thermoelectric power factor and figure of merit (ZT), which further increase when decreasing the thickness of CsSnI3 layers in the superlattices. In (RbGeI3)5/(CsSnI3)1 superlattice, the power factor increases by two times, and ZT is enhanced by nine times, compared to the parent CsSnI3. The ZT of this superlattice is 1.34 at 300 K and 3.78 at 550 K, providing a potential candidate for room-temperature thermoelectric applications. These results also confirm a way to improve the thermoelectric performance of CsSnI3.

Abstract:Efficiency of thermoelectric materials is generally discussed in terms of the dimensionless figure-of-merit, ZT = S-2 sigma T/kappa, Many researchers have found that it is possible to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity by incorporating nanostructures (i.e. nanoparticles or heterobarriers) into materials, thereby scattering phonons. At the same time, it has been theoretically predicted and experimentally demonstrated that barriers can be used to "filter" the distribution of carriers which contribute to conduction. By doing so, it is possible to significantly increase the Seebeck coefficient while only modestly decreasing the electrical conductivity. As a result of this energy-dependent scattering of carriers, the thermoelectric power factor is increased. We present theoretical and experimental results for metal/semiconductor nanocomposites consisting of metallic rare-earth-group V nanoparticles within III-V semiconductors (e. g. ErAs:InGaAlAs) demonstrating both an increase in thermoelectric power factor and a decrease in thermal conductivity, resulting in a large figure of merit. We also discuss metal/semiconductor superlattices made of lattice-matched nitride materials for electron filtering and the prospects of these materials for efficient thermoelectrics, especially at high temperatures. Finally, we will discuss both various synthesis techniques for these materials, including the prospects for bulk growth, and also devices fabricated from these materials.
Engineering of charge carriers via a two-dimensional heterostructure to enhance the thermoelectric figure of merit.

Abstract:High band degeneracy and glassy phonon transport are two remarkable features of highly efficient thermoelectric (TE) materials. The former promotes the power factor, while the latter aims to break the lower limit of lattice thermal conductivity through phonon scattering. Herein, we use the unique possibility offered by a two-dimensional superlattice-monolayer structure (SLM) to engineer the band degeneracy, charge density and phonon spectrum to maximize the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT). First-principles calculations with Boltzmann transport equations reveal that the conduction bands of ZrSe2/HfSe2 SLM possess a highly degenerate level which gives a high n-type power factor; at the same time, the stair-like density of states yields a high Seebeck coefficient. These characteristics are absent in the individual monolayers. In addition, the SLM shows a suppressed lattice thermal conductivity along the superlattice period as phonons are effectively scattered by the interfaces. An intrinsic ZT of 5.3 (300 K) is achieved in n-type SLM, and it is 3.2 in the p-type counterpart. Compared with the theoretical predictions calculated with the same level of accuracy, these values are at least four-fold higher than those in the two parent materials, monolayer ZrSe2 and HfSe2. Our results provide a new strategy for the maximum thermoelectric performance, and clearly demonstrate the advantage of two-dimensional material heterostructures in the application of renewable energy.
Thin-film thermoelectric devices with high room-temperature figures of merit

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials are of interest for applications as heat pumps and power generators. The performance of thermoelectric devices is quantified by a figure of merit, ZT, where Z is a measure of a material's thermoelectric properties and T is the absolute temperature. A material with a figure of merit of around unity was first reported over four decades ago, but since then—despite investigation of various approaches—there has been only modest progress in finding materials with enhanced ZT values at room temperature. Here we report thin-film thermoelectric materials that demonstrate a significant enhancement in ZT at 300 K, compared to state-of-the-art bulk Bi2Te3 alloys. This amounts to a maximum observed factor of ∼2.4 for our p-type Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 superlattice devices. The enhancement is achieved by controlling the transport of phonons and electrons in the superlattices. Preliminary devices exhibit significant cooling (32 K at around room temperature) and the potential to pump a heat flux of up to 700 W cm-2; the localized cooling and heating occurs some 23,000 times faster than in bulk devices. We anticipate that the combination of performance, power density and speed achieved in these materials will lead to diverse technological applications: for example, in thermochemistry-on-a-chip, DNA microarrays, fibre-optic switches and microelectrothermal systems.

High thermoelectric power factor through topological flat bands

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials are useful for applications such as waste heat harvesting or efficient and targeted cooling. While various strategies towards superior thermoelectrics through a reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity have been developed, a path to enhance the power factor is pressing. Here, we report large power factors up to 5 mW m$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ at room temperature in the kagome metal Ni$_3$In$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$. This system is predicted to feature almost dispersionless flat bands in conjunction with highly dispersive Dirac-like bands in its electronic structure around the Fermi energy $E_\text{F}$ [L. Ye et al., Nature Physics 1-5 (2024)]. Within this study, we experimentally and theoretically showcase that tuning this flat band precisely below $E_\text{F}$ by chemical doping $x$ boosts the Seebeck coefficient and power factor, as highly mobile charge carriers scatter into the flat-band states. Our work demonstrates the prospect of engineering extremely flat and highly dispersive bands towards the Fermi energy in kagome metals and introduces topological flat bands as a novel tuning knob for thermoelectrics.

Abstract:Understanding the origin of intrinsic lattice thermal conductivity in crystalline solids is critical to research fields ranging from thermoelectric materials to thermal barrier coatings. This work reports the high-temperature thermoelectric properties and reveals an intrinsically multiple-mechanism-driven low lattice thermal conductivity in the (Bi-2)(m)(Bi2Te3)(n) (m/n = 3:9, 2:7, and 1:5) natural superlattice series. Low-temperature heat capacity measurements provide compelling evidence for the existence of multiple low-lying Einstein oscillator modes in (Bi-2)(m)(Bi2Te3)(n) compounds, suggestive of the coupling between heat-carrying acoustic phonons and low-frequency optical phonons. This endows (Bi-2)(m)(Bi2Te3)(n) compounds with strong phonon resonance scattering and, thus, intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity. Moreover, phonon velocity measurements demonstrate that the low lattice thermal conductivity originates from chemical bond softening and lattice anharmonicity. Additionally, a small volume of the Brillouin zone gives rise to low cutoff frequency of acoustic phonon modes in the (Bi-2)(m)(Bi2Te3)(n) natural superlattice series, which are also favorable for the realization of low lattice thermal conductivity. The tight integration of all these mechanisms into a single material not only makes (Bi-2)(m)(Bi2Te3)(n) compounds candidates for future thermoelectric applications but also enables a guide for designing materials with expected thermal transport properties.
Hierarchical Model for the Evolution of Cloud Complexes

Abstract:The structure of cloud complexes appears to be well described by a "tree structure" representation when the image is partitioned into "clouds". In this representation, the parent-child relationships are assigned according to containment. Based on this picture, a hierarchical model for the evolution of Cloud Complexes, including star formation, is constructed, that follows the mass evolution of each sub-structure by computing its mass exchange (evaporation or condensation) with its parent and children, which depends on the radiation density at the interphase. For the set of parameters used as a reference model, the system produces IMFs with a maximum at too high mass (~2 M_sun) and the characteristic times for evolution seem too long. We show that these properties can be improved by adjusting model parameters. However, the emphasis here is to illustrate some general properties of this nonlinear model for the star formation process. Notwithstanding the simplifications involved, the model reveals an essential feature that will likely remain if additional physical processes are included. That is: the detailed behavior of the system is very sensitive to variations on the initial and external conditions, suggesting that a "universal" IMF is very unlikely. When an ensemble of IMFs corresponding to a variety of initial or external conditions is examined, the slope of the IMF at high masses shows variations comparable to the range derived from observational data. The influence of non-idealities on the thermoelectric power factor of nanostructured superlattices

Abstract:Cross-plane superlattices composed of nanoscale layers of alternating potential wells and barriers have attracted great attention for their potential to provide thermoelectric power factor improvements and higher ZT figure of merit. Previous theoretical works have shown that the presence of optimized potential barriers could provide improvements to the Seebeck coefficient through carrier energy filtering, which improves the power factor by up to 40%. However, experimental corroboration of this prediction has been extremely scant. In this work, we employ quantum mechanical electronic transport simulations to outline the detrimental effects of random variation, imperfections and nonoptimal barrier shapes in a superlattice geometry on these predicted power factor improvements. Thus we aim to assess either the robustness or the fragility of these theoretical gains in the face of the types of variation one would find in real material systems. We show that these power factor improvements are relatively robust against: overly thick barriers, diffusion of barriers into the body of the wells, and random fluctuations in barrier spacing and width. However, notably, we discover that extremely thin barriers and random fluctuation in barrier heights by as little as 10% is sufficient to entirely destroy any power factor benefits of the optimized geometry. Our results could provide performance optimization routes for nanostructured thermoelectrics and elucidate the reasons why significant power factor improvements are not commonly realized in superlattices, despite theoretical predictions.
Tuning the Thermoelectric Properties of Transition Metal Oxide Thin Films and Superlattices on the Quantum Scale

Abstract:Combining advanced growth and characterization techniques with state-of-the-art first-principles simulations in the frameworks of density functional theory and Boltzmann transport theory, we discuss recent advances in the field of transition-metal-oxide films and superlattices as thermoelectric materials, with particular focus on a selection of quantum-scale approaches to tune their thermoelectric performance. Specifically, PdCoO2 films grown on regular and miscut substrates allow to measure the large predicted out-of-plane Seebeck coefficient of this anisotropic material, and also reveal the necessity of a Hubbard-U parameter on the Co 3d states. Furthermore, we discuss how oxygen diffusion and incorporation from the SrTiO3(001) substrate leads to a significant enhancement of the high-temperature Seebeck coefficient in LaNiO3 / LaAlO3(001) superlattices. Next, we show how structurally and electronically compatible n- and p-type materials can be achieved either by control of the stacking sequence at polar interfaces in a LaNiO3 / SrTiO3(001) superlattice or by using epitaxial strain to shift orbital-dependent resonances in the density of states across the Fermi level in (LaNiO3)3 / (LaAlO3)1(001) superlattices. Moreover, confinement- and strain-induced metal-to-insulator transitions lead to a high Seebeck coefficient and power factor in short-period (LaNiO3)1 / (LaAlO3)1(001) and (SrXO3)1 / (SrTiO3)1(001) superlattices (X= V, Cr, Mn). Last but not least, we establish a relation between the topologically nontrivial Chern insulating behavior and enhanced thermoelectric response in an (EuO)1 / (MgO)3(001) superlattice. We conclude with a discussion of open challenges and an outlook towards future topics of research in oxide thermoelectrics.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
Limitations of zT as a Figure of Merit for Nanostructured Thermoelectric Materials

Abstract:A numerical study of thermoelectric nanocomposites is presented. Thermoelectric properties as a function of average grain size or nanoparticle density are examined by simulating the measurements as they would be done experimentally. In accordance with previous theory and experimental results, we find that the Seebeck coefficient, power factor and figure of merit, zT, can be increased by nanostructuring when energy barriers exist around the grain boundaries or embedded nanoparticles. When we simulate the performance of a thermoelectric cooler with the same material, however, we find that the maximum temperature difference is much less than expected from the given zT. The same nanocomposite without electrically active grain boundaries has a lower measured zT but a higher maximum cooling temperature. The physical reason for these results is explained. The results illustrate the limitations of zT as a figure of merit for nanocomposites with electrically active grain boundaries and suggest that the ability to enhance the electrical performance of thermoelectric materials by nanostructuring is limited.
