Abstract:In this paper we study the automorphism groups of real curves admitting a regular meromorphic function $f$ of degree $p$, so called real cyclic $p$-gonal curves. When $p=2$ the automorphism groups of real hyperelliptic curves where given by Bujalance et al. in \cite{BCGG}.

Abstract:Further geometry and topology for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex Grassmannians Gn(CN) are studied. Some curvature pinching theorems for pseudo-holomorphic curves with constant Kahler angles in G(m)(C-N) are obtained, so that the corresponding results for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex projective spaces are generalized.

Abstract:The study of algebraic curves $\cX$ with numerous automorphisms in relation to their genus $g(\cX)$ is a well-established area in Algebraic Geometry. In 1995, Irokawa and Sasaki \cite{Sasaki} gave a complete classification of curves over $\mathbb{C}$ with an automorphism of order $N \geq 2g(\mathcal{X}) + 1$. Precisely, such curves are either hyperelliptic with $N=2g(\cX)+2$ with $g(\cX)$ even, or are quotients of the Fermat curve of degree $N$ by a cyclic group of order $N$. Such a classification does not hold in positive characteristic $p$, the curve with equation $y^2=x^p-x$ being a well-studied counterexample. This paper successfully classifies curves with a cyclic automorphism group of order $N$ at least $2g(\mathcal{X}) + 1$ in positive characteristic $p \neq 2$, offering the positive characteristic counterpart to the Irokawa-Sasaki result. The possibility of wild ramification in positive characteristic has presented a few challenges to the investigation.

Abstract:The {\it Weierstrass semigroup} of pole orders of meromorphic functions in a point $p$ of a smooth algebraic curve $C$ is a classical object of study; a celebrated problem of Hurwitz is to characterize which semigroups ${\rm S} \subset \mathbb{N}$ with finite complement are {\it realizable} as Weierstrass semigroups ${\rm S}= {\rm S}(C,p)$. In this note, we establish realizability results for cyclic covers $\pi: (C,p) \rightarrow (B,q)$ of hyperelliptic targets $B$ marked in hyperelliptic Weierstrass points; and we show that realizability is dictated by the behavior under $j$-fold multiplication of certain divisor classes in hyperelliptic Jacobians naturally associated to our cyclic covers, as $j$ ranges over all natural numbers.

Abstract:This paper deals with cyclic covers of a large family of rational normal surfaces that can also be described as quotients of a product, where the factors are cyclic covers of algebraic curves. We use a generalization of Esnault-Viehweg method to show that the action of the monodromy on the first Betti group of the covering (and its Hodge structure) splits as a direct sum of the same data for some specific cyclic covers over $\mathbb{P}^1$. This has applications to the study of Lê-Yomdin surface singularities, in particular to the action of the monodromy on the Mixed Hodge Structure, as well as to isotrivial fibered surfaces.

Abstract:Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p >0$. Suppose $g \geq 3$ and $0 \leq f \leq g$. We prove there is a smooth projective $k$-curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ with no non-trivial automorphisms. In addition, we prove there is a smooth projective hyperelliptic $k$-curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ whose only non-trivial automorphism is the hyperelliptic involution. The proof involves computations about the dimension of the moduli space of (hyperelliptic) $k$-curves of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ with extra automorphisms.

Abstract:In this paper, we study non-hyperelliptic curves of genus $3$ with cyclic automorphism group of order $6$. Over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $\neq 2,3$, such curves are written as plane quartics $C_r: x^3 z + y^4 + r y^2 z^2 + z^4 = 0$ with one parameter $r$. As the first main theorem, we show that $r\neq 0,\pm 2$ and give a necessary and sufficient condition with respect to $r$ and $r'$ such that $C_r \cong C_{r'}$. By describing the Hasse-Witt matrix of $C_r$ in terms of a certain Gauss' hypergeometric series, we obtain the second main theorem, where we determine the possible $a$-number of $C_r$, and give the exact number of isomorphism classes over $K$ of such curves attaining the possible maximal $a$-number.

Abstract:Let C be a complex smooth projective algebraic curve endowed with an action of a finite group G such that the quotient curve has genus at least 3. We prove that if the G-curve C is very general for these properties, then the natural map from the group algebra QG to the algebra of Q-endomorphisms of its Jacobian is an isomorphism. We use this to obtain (topological) properties regarding certain virtual linear representations of a mapping class group. For example, we show that the connected component of the Zariski closure of such a representation acts Q-irreducibly in a G-isogeny space of H^1(C; Q)and with image often a Q-almost simple group.

Abstract:We prove irreducibility for the space of cyclic covers of fixed numerical type between smooth projective curves, and also for the space of cyclic covers of prime order and of fixed numerical-combinatorial type between moduli-stable projective curves. As an application we describe the irreducible components of the singular locus of the compactified moduli space of curves $\bar{\mahfrak M_g}$, extending the work of Cornalba, who described the irreducible components of the singular locus of the moduli space of curves $\mahfrak M_g}$.

Abstract:We characterize algebraic curves in $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}_\mathbb{C}$ invariant under an infinite subgroup of $\textrm{PGL}(n,\mathbb{C})$, $n\geq 3$. More precisely, it is shown that given a one-dimensional algebraic set in $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}_\mathbb{C}$ which is invariant under an infinite subgroup of projective transformations should satisfy that each irreducible non-degenerate component is projectively equivalent to a monomial curve.

Abstract:We bound the number of fixed points of an automorphism of a real curve in terms of the genus and the number of connected components of the real part of the curve. Using this bound, we derive some consequences concerning the maximum order of an automorphism and the maximum order of an abelian group of automorphisms of a real curve. We also bound the full group of automorphisms of a real hyperelliptic curve.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that if two germs of plane curves ( C , 0) and $$(C',0)$$ ( C ′ , 0 ) with at least one singular branch are equivalent by a (real) smooth diffeomorphism, then C is complex isomorphic to $$C'$$ C ′ or to $$\overline{C'}$$ C ′ ̄ . A similar result was shown by Ephraim for irreducible hypersurfaces before, but his proof is not constructive. Indeed, we show that the complex isomorphism is given by the Taylor series of the diffeomorphism. We also prove an analogous result for the case of non-irreducible hypersurfaces containing an irreducible component that is non-factorable. Moreover, we provide a general overview of the different classifications of plane curve singularities.

Cyclic Cubic Points on Higher Genus Curves

Abstract:The distribution of degree $d$ points on curves is well understood, especially for low degrees. We refine this study to include information on the Galois group in the simplest interesting case: $d = 3$. For curves of genus at least 5, we show cubic points with Galois group $C_3$ arise from well-structured morphisms, along with providing computable tests for the existence of such morphisms. We prove the same for curves of lower genus under some geometric or arithmetic assumptions.

Abstract:A closed Riemann surface S of genus is called cyclic p-gonal if it has an automorphism of order p , where p is a prime, such that has genus 0. For , the surface is called hyperelliptic and is an involution with fixed points. Classicaly, cyclic p-gonal surfaces can be characterized using Fuchsian groups. In this paper we establish a geometric characterization of cyclic p-gonal surfaces. Specifically, this is determined by collections of simple geodesic arcs on the surfaces and graphs associated to these arcs. In previous work, the author has given a geometric characterization of hyperelliptic surfaces in terms of simple, closed geodesics and graphs associated to these. The present work may be seen as an extension. Involutions, however, have properties that do not generalize to arbitrary automorphisms of order p . Hence, the number of vertices needed in the graphs used here is larger than that of the hyperelliptic case.

Non-vanishing of Ceresa and Gross--Kudla--Schoen cycles associated to modular curves

Abstract:Given an algebraic curve $X$ of genus $\ge 3$, one can construct two algebraic $1$-cycles, the Ceresa cycle and the Gross-Kudla-Schoen modified diagonal cycle, each living in the Jacobian of $X$ and the triple product $X \times X \times X$ respectively. These two cycles are homologically trivial but are of infinite order in their corresponding Chow groups for a very general curve over $\mathbb{C}$. From the work of S-W Zhang, for a fixed curve these two cycles are non-torsion in their corresponding Chow groups if and only if one of them is. In this paper, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Kudla-Schoen cycles associated to a modular curve $X$ are non-torsion in the corresponding Chow groups when $X=\Gamma \backslash \overline{\mathbb{H}}$ for certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We obtain the result by studying a pullback formula for special divisors by the diagonal map $X \hookrightarrow X \times X$.

Rational Curves on Real Classical Groups

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.

Abstract:We consider cyclic unramified coverings of degree d of irreducible complex smooth genus curves and their corresponding Prym varieties. They provide natural examples of polarized abelian varieties with automorphisms of order d. The rich geometry of the associated Prym map has been studied in several papers, and the cases are quite well understood. Nevertheless, very little is known for higher values of d. In this paper, we investigate whether the covering can be reconstructed from its Prym variety, that is, whether the generic Prym Torelli theorem holds for these coverings. We prove this is so for the so-called Sophie Germain prime numbers, that is, for prime such that is also prime. We use results of arithmetic nature on -type abelian varieties combined with theta-duality techniques.

Abstract:We compute the Poincaré polynomials of the compactified Jacobians for plane curve singularities with Puiseaux exponents $(nd,md,md+1)$, and relate them to the combinatorics of $q,t$-Catalan numbers in the non-coprime case. Abstract:In this paper we classify the complex elliptic curves $E$ for which there exist cyclic subgroups $C\leq (E,+)$ of order $n$ such that the elliptic curves $E$ and $E/C$ are isomorphic, where $n$ is a positive integer. Important examples are provided in the last section. Moreover, we answer the following question: given a complex elliptic curve E, when can one find a cyclic subgroup $C$ of order $n$ of $(E,+)$ such that $(E,C)\sim(\frac{E}{C},\frac{E[n]}{C})$, $E[n]$ being the $n$-torsion subgroup of $E$, classifying in this way the fixed points of the action of the Fricke involution on the open modular curves $Y_0(n)$

Abstract:In this paper, we elaborate the theory of exceptional hereditary curves over arbitrary fields. In particular, we study the category of equivariant coherent sheaves on a regular projective curve whose quotient curve has genus zero and prove existence of a tilting object in this case. We also give a link between wallpaper groups and real hereditary curves, providing details to an old observation made by Helmut Lenzing.
